   “Nii-sama?” Came from the young boy as he had to look up to see his eldest brother’s face. It was rare for him to come home as he was nearly as busy as their father these days. He was the heir after all and a lot was expected of him. And as such, the youngest child had been warned not to bother him. He needed to focus on his work after all. 

   ‘Come,’ says the eldest, leaving the boy entirely confused as to what was wrong. The man’s expression revealed nothing, no anger and no happiness, so what was it? Was he angry? Disappointed? Or was he happy and just didn’t show it? Emotions were still hard for the child to grasp. He was still learning to use them properly himself after all. 

Quietly, he followed the eldest into their father’s room where he usually was whenever he had to write papers, make calls, or meet colleagues. Rarely did the boy go in here, and only when he was needed. He didn’t dare bother his father and when he did, his throat ended up shut tight, refusing to allow him to speak his mind. That was how his father usually misinterpreted his intentions and needs and wants. 

Once, when they went to a shopping district in Yokohama, Shuji saw children holding onto their parents and siblings, by either holding their hand, lightly clutching to them or holding the fabric of an elder’s clothes, so they wouldn’t lose them. 

Could he do that now too? To show his eldest brother he wasn’t sure what was happening? 

But before he could do that, a hand came to rest between his shoulders, gently pushing him to the cushion on the wooden floor. The boy knelt, hands obediently holding his knees, expecting the worst as always. 

His father and brother spoke to each other, his father inquiring about a certain situation, his brother apologizing, saying he should’ve supervised the boy better. Shuji remained quiet, uncertain about what it was he did wrong. 

When his father asked him a question directly, holding out a paper with a drawing on it, the boy, once again, couldn’t bring himself to answer, only knowing he couldn’t smile now. He had to keep a serious expression, just like his brother and father. Except... his eyes revealed the confusion that was present in his mind. 

The drawing... was it wrong? It was merely the companion he had for as long as he remembered. He knew no one else saw it, but that was what came to mind to draw... when he was supposed to study. Was that it? He shouldn’t have drawn it and instead only focused on studying, right? 

His gaze dropped to rest on a crack in the wooden floor, thinking it may be better not to reveal his companion to anyone ever again.

‘  NICE FIGHT ,  DAZAI           !  ’     enthusiastic ,  perhaps overly so ,  charged and brimming with leftover adrenaline from their newly completed mission .  chuuya’s grin splits from ear to ear ,  an arm reaching up to dangle an elbow around dazai’s neck   (              and if the difference in height creates any unplanned discomfort ,  he doesn’t let it show .  )   it’s the beginning of a reputation ,  one more success in an unbroken chain that only seems to grow .  a partnership that has the underground world on strict watch duty              and no matter how tired ,  bruised his limbs are ,  chuuya insists on a celebration .
