The Avett Brothers at Express Live!, Columbus, Ohio, July 23, 2021
I have no enemies, the audience sang in unison as the Avett Brothers brought their (over)sold-out concert in Columbus’ Express Live! to an end.
Darkness had fallen over the city after more than two hours of Avett music. And though that Utopian thought - I have no enemies - likely isn’t true for many in the wake of the previous guy’s insurrection and disagreements over whether to get vaccinated, singing the gorgeous, make-your-eyes leak “No Hard Feelings” was cathartic for band and audience alike and a reminder of live music's healing power.
“We can’t agree on everything, but we’re all here,” Scott Avett said earlier in the evening as if to make the point.
When the Avetts are on stage, string sections merge with raucous cello solos, rhythm banjo, screaming electric guitars and fiddle tunes - as in Tania Elizabeth’s solo take on “Old Joe Clark.” Meanwhile, choruses of “All You Need is Love” (and Bob) break out as bassist Bob Crawford takes another solo and shows off his and his tech’s seamless ability to switch standup for electric varieties without missing a note.
It was a mesmerizing thing to watch.
Despite a sputtering start, the Avetts haven’t any discernible rust after their pandemic-mandated downtime. And their July 23 show was typical of the seven-piece troupe’s atypical mix of country (George Jones’ “Choices”), rock ‘n’ roll (“Die, Die, Die”), pseudo hip-hop (“High Steppin’,” “Ain’t No Man”) and folk (“Murder in the City”) swathed in familial harmonies and friendly joy and delivered by various solo, duo, trio and full-band configurations.
For all the fun the Avetts bring, they also force their audience to think - deeply. Whether it’s contemplating death in “Feelings,” incarceration via Elizabeth’s wrenching delivery of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall be Released,” the United States’ painful history on “We Americans” or the things that are hard to say - but must be said - on “I and Love and You,” Scott and Seth Avett and company have found the perfect balance of medicine and sugar.
And it nourishes the soul.

Four Summers ago... Throwback Thursday — 16 Yrs ago... PALEFACE opened for The Avett Brothers with his side project (at the time) “Just About To Burn” at Kings in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was such a special night... We jammed with the brothers in the green room to Paleface “Was Oblivious” before hitting the stage. The club was sold out (less than 300 capacity room), and we were all so excited. This was our first string of shows with The Avett Brothers....(Although the very first show together was at Radio Perfecto in NYC...which was put together by Nicole Atkins and also had Langhorne Slim on the bill. Just About To Burn, featured Paleface on vocals, guitar, harmonica, melodica, and a little banjo, Monica “Mo” Samalot on drums & back-up vocals, and Breadfoot on dobro, banjo, guitar, and back-up vocals. “Just About to Burn” is also the name of the album which features the Paleface’s versions of “Dancin Daze”, and “Was Oblivious” (available digitally online everywhere). Our bandmate Breadfoot had a minidisk recorder set up by the soundboard but for some reason it didn’t record our set. However, it did record The Avett Brother’s set, and some of those songs ended up of The Avett Brothers Live Vol 1. (available online everywhere) (Poster art by Scott Avett. Scott Avett leads The Avett Brothers at a sold-out crowd this weekend at the Santa Barbara Bowl, in Santa Barbara California. Under friendly evening skies, the American folk rock band from Concord, North Carolina served up their intelligent, emotional and foot tapping set. The band is two brothers, Scott Avett (banjo, lead vocals, guitar, piano, kick-drum) and Seth Avett (guitar, lead vocals, piano, hi-hat) along with Bob Crawford (double bass, electric bass, violin, backing vocals) and Joe Kwon (cello, backing vocals). The Avett Brothers: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
he Avett Brothers' music has roots in traditional folk and bluegrass, but also captures the high spirits and no-boundaries attitude of rock & roll -- which is appropriate, since rock is where Scott Avett and Seth Avett first cut their teeth as musicians. Although siblings Scott (vocals, banjo) and Seth (vocals, guitar) began making music together as children, their group's genesis began when they were members of Nemo, a rock band that gigged regularly in Greenville, North Carolina. Looking for another outlet for their musical ideas, the Avetts began getting together with like-minded friends (most notably Nemo guitarist John Twomey) on Tuesdays for acoustic guitar pulls, where they'd share a few drinks and swap songs. As time passed, the weekly get-together (which was called "the Back Door Project" or "Nemo Downstairs") became a semi-public event, with the pickers busking for the enjoyment of passers-by, and Seth and Scott decided the new acoustic music they were making was as fun and satisfying as their rock band.

Song Review: The Avett Bothers - “This Land is Your Land”
The Avett brothers let “This Land is Your Land” speak mostly for itself.
The “b” is lower-case because this sparse, stand-alone single features just the brothers, not the band. Scott, on banjo, and Seth, on guitar, alternate the first two verses, coming together on the chorus and the final verse.
Woody Guthrie’s words are powerful and the familial harmonies only add to their prescient feeling. When the brothers sing of a high wall ... that tried to stop me, you’d think it was contemporary, not eight decades old.

St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Railroad Earth, Punch Brothers, and many more annoucned for the 11th Annual Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que!
It is hard to believe but we are already at the 11th Annual Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que and it just seems like this festival started a few years ago. So many incredible and unforgettable memories over the years from such greats as Ricky Skaggs, Drive-By Truckers, Willie Nelson & Family, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, The Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Greensky Bluegrass, and Trampled by Turtles just to name a few. This year’s Banjo-B-Que is planned for Memorial Day weekend – May 22nd- 23rd, 2020 and will take place at last year’s location (and hopefully the forever location!), Lake Olmstead Stadium. So who does Banjo-B-Que have in store for us with #11? Well let’s just dive right into this lineup and discuss it right now!
Starting off this year’s incredible line up is St. Paul & the Broken Bones and Railroad Earth, followed by Punch Brothers, Mt. Joy, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Allman Betts Band, Shovels & Rope, Futurebirds, The Lil Smokies, Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Town Mountain, Larry Keel Experience, The Artisanals, Old Salt Union, Little Roy & Lizzy Show, Trongone Band, The Josephines, Grassland String Band, and my local boys- The Mason Jars! This lineup is stacked from top to bottom and there are so many reason why we all need to go enjoy ourselves at Banjo-B-Que this upcoming Memorial Day weekend. But I can narrow it down to three artists that you have to see:
The Allman Betts Band – Devon Allman (son of Gregg Allman) and Duane Betts (son of Dickey Betts) will be bringing the heat with their band of gifted and talented musicians at the 11th Annual Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que. The Allman Betts Band will be playing non-stop from now until July: SweetWater 420 Festival, Lockn’ Festival, and Peach Music Fest are just some of the notable national stages they will share this year on the festival circuit. Joining Devon and Duane is Berry Oakley Jr. (son of Allman Brothers Band bass player Berry Oakley), Johnny Stachela (slide guitar), R. Scott Bryan (percussion), and John Lum (percussion). They are going to play one of the wildest sets all weekend. Mark my words. In the meantime, check out this live video of their rendition of The Allman Brothers Band classic, “Jessica”.
Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band (roots/country blues) consists of The Reverend Peyton (vocals/guitar), “Washboard” Breezy “The Miss Elizabeth of Country Blues” Peyton (washboard), and Max Senteney (drums). They last played this event in 2018 at the 10th Annual Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que to a very excited crowd that gathered around the main stage for this intriguing spectacle. I was told from a few friends to definitely check out their set and let me tell you sometimes I am really glad I listen to my friends. Incidentally, they are also veterans from a very stacked 2016 the 7th Annual Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que. Check out this official video of their song, “Raise A Little Hell”, and see what you think!
Larry Keel Experience (bluegrass) is my white whale that I have been chasing for a few years. They normally would play the Aiken Bluegrass Festival (which is on a hiatus this year) in May, so we have not had the pleasure of the Larry Keel Experience to play the festivities at Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que. This year they will make their Banjo-B-Que debut. The Larry Keel Experience consists of Larry Keel (vocals/guitar) and Jenny Keel (bass). Keller Williams said it best, “There is a certain genuine authenticity that Larry and Jenny possess.” You can experience Larry and Jenny Keel at the 11th Annual Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que this Memorial Day weekend. Need your Larry Keel Experience fix before May? Don’t worry! Watch this live video of the Larry Keel Experience at Pisgah Brewing Company and get you fix until May!
Now that we discussed the lineup in depth, let’s talk about two more attractions at Banjo-B-Que: the plethora of tasty food vendors AND $4 domestic/craft beer (and I do mean REAL craft beer) tents with over 80 flavors to choose from on location! Some of the previous brewers included; Monday Night Brewing, Left Nut Brewing Co., Hi-Wire Brewing, Reformation, Savannah Brewing Company, Jekyll Brewing, Southern Brewing Co., Red Hare Brewing Company, Prairie Artisan Ales, Riverwatch Brewery, Nantahala Brewing Co., Jailhouse Brewing Company, Southern Tier Brewing Company, and Eagle Creek Brewing Company. To me, that is one helluva lineup for a craft beer selection at a festival that I would attend for multiple days. Believe me, I am a proud beer snob. I would gladly pass on the status quo domestic brands in a heartbeat with no qualms about it.
Since we discussed the lineup, food, and beer for the 11th Annual Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que, I feel it is time for us all to go and grab our tickets for this upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Head over to their Official ticket page to secure your ticket today!
If you are coming from out of town and need a place to stay? Don’t worry, we have you covered there too! If you want to camp by Olmstead Lake, then there is also that option at Banjo-B-Que!
