Fox has renewed its dramas “Accused” and “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” for sophomore seasons, to air in 2023-24, Fox Entertainment’s president of scripted programming, Michael Thorn announced on Thursday.
Hailing from Howard Gordon, “Accused” opened on a season high note as television’s highest-rated drama debut in two years. In its Jan. 22 premiere, the show registered a 2.5 Live + 35 Day rating and 14.6 multi-platform viewers. To date, the show averages 7.5 million multi-platform viewers, up +126% from its Live + Same Day delivery. “Accused” is based on the BBC’s BAFTA-winning series of the same name.
“With ‘Accused,’ Howard Gordon has taken the crime anthology to new heights and acclaim, featuring an all-star roster of directors and talent headlining gripping episodes that entertain viewers with a provocative, fresh take on many of the most relevant, timely issues of our day,” said Thorn in a statement.
In its Jan. 8 debut, “Alert” recorded 8.5 million multi-platform viewers, a lift of 112% from Live +Same Day figures. Its 6.7 million multi-platform first season average also represents an increase of 154% from Live + Same day numbers. Scott Caan, Dania Ramirez, Adeola Role and Ryan Broussard star in the series, which comes from co-creators and executive producers John Eisendrath and Jamie Foxx.
“Scott, Dania, John and Jamie have done an incredible job launching Alert and bringing its story into heart-pounding focus, giving us an emotionally intense procedural drama that’s primed for even more success as Carla takes the day-to-day reins, continuing the great work we’ve seen this season.”
In addition to the news, Carla Kettner (“The Blacklist,” “Bones”) will join the series for Season 2 and serve as showrunner. Both “Accused” and “Alert” are co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment. Their pick-ups follow Fox’s recent renewal of “The Cleaning Lady” for a third season.
“We are excited to continue our long partnership with Fox to bring more Accused and Alert to audiences around the world,” said Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television. “It’s wonderful to see these timely, poignant stories resonating with viewers, and we want to congratulate the writers, producers, cast and crew on their success. We are incredibly proud of their collective work and look forward to seeing where these series go next!”

Nation Beat - The Royal Chase - funky brass band interprets music of Brazil and Louisiana
FORRO. FUNK. BRASS. MEET THE NEXT INCARNATION Nation Beat returns with a whole new plan… and a fabulously funky, brash new CD: The Royal Chase. The chase has been on for a longtime for drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Scott Kettner. With his collective Nation Beat, he has long explored the folkloric musical traditions of Brazil and Louisiana. That exploration of the shared history and culture of these two incredibly rich musical areas has led to a hybridity, one mixed with his jazz influence, inspiring Kettner and his crew to compose and perform new music that brings all of these influences together. The chase has led Kettner to a royal payoff. The Royal Chase (NBM), to be released in 2020, is an album that represents a new distinctive sound for Nation Beat. It is the primal sounds of brass instruments mixed with drums and percussion, reinterpreting classics and presenting original songs for curious listeners who thrive on musical pluralism and surprises.  The new Nation Beat sound is unplugged and funky. Forró, Funk, Brass ’n’ Sass!
“I wanted to reimagine the classic forró songs from Brazil as vehicles for improvisation in a funky brass band format.” Kettner enthuses in the studio where he co-produced The Royal Chase with longtime friend and collaborator Rob Curto (Lila Downs, David Krakauer), “I’ve always imagined my musical heroes making music together and what it would sound like, what kind of energy it would generate. Dr. John and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band meets Chico Science and Jackson do Pandeiro.”     Nation Beat is: Scott Kettner: drum set and percussion Paul Carlon: tenor sax and horn arrangements Mark Collins: trumpet Mariel Bildsten: trombone Joe Correia: sousaphone Special Guests Spyboy “Honey” Irving Banister: interview on track #1 Cyro Baptista: percussion on track #10 Carolina Mama: vocals on track #10 Moses Patrou: vocals on track #4, keys on track #8 Rob Curto: keyboards on tracks #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 Alan Friedman: keyboards on tracks #1 & 3 Pitoco de Aira: Ilú on track #2 Collin DeJoseph: keys track #3

A Family Gathering
by Jessica Handrik, Education Director
Tumblr media
Picture the lobby of the Flynn, filled and animated on a Saturday morning with dozens of families bouncing joyfully along to live music in the relaxed, welcoming vibe of an outdoor summer show. Nation Beat, the energetic band bringing this musical warmth to an otherwise chilly March morning, invited everybody to dance and sing along to their Carnival Caravan program of classic and original songs rooted in Brazilian maracatu and New Orleans jazz.
A fun reminder of the traditions that unite all cultures, many attendees were dressed in their best and brightest green, in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. The songs included Forró de Dois Amigos and Hey Pocky Way. Band leader Scott Kettner led us in call and response—a key aspect of maracatu—and invited us to drum along. Before long, he no longer needed to remind us that we were welcome to dance.
It was fun to see so many smiling families enjoying and experiencing the arts: babies with their older siblings, caregivers, grandparents, and parents joining a community musical experience. Siblings were laughing together as each played a drum; parents holding their infants were swaying to the music; and some folks made use of the whole space, dancing throughout the lobby area.
This concert was the third of Nation Beat’s residency, which began Thursday evening with an interactive teacher workshop. Educators learned maracatu rhythms alongside Nation Beat’s world-class musicians, as well as call-and-response and other techniques for integrating music into their classrooms. On Friday, students from around the state joined us for two incredible student matinees, with teachers, students of all ages, and countless others dancing along and responding to the calls. As students walked to their buses, they were still bopping along to the rhythms and sounds of the show.
On Saturday, the hour-long family show came to a close as the musicians moved among the audience, crouching down so that curious children could get a closer look at the sousaphone, trumpet, trombone, and saxophone and high-five the musicians. As families flowed out of our lobby, they told us how much they appreciated the show as well as the availability of headphones for persons with sensibilities to sound. “There’s really nothing else quite like this for families to do on a Saturday morning around here,” one parent said.
For one dad who recently moved to the area, it was the first time entering the Flynn for both him and his child. It’s fun to imagine a young Vermonter beginning their Flynn journey right here in our lobby this past Saturday.

Monoku based on how Japanese #haiku often printed in single column. Legitimized by 3 key writers/poets: Marlene Mountain, among 1st Eng-lang. HAIKU poets, often used horiz. line form; Hiroaki Sato translated Jap.~> English as monoku; * Matsuo Allard wrote essays on monoku in magazines/chapbooks devoted to its form, plus practiced it. * usually contains fewer than 17 syllables. * A caesura (pause) (if apropos) is dictated by sense or speech rhythm, followinglR Japanese tradition of a break marked by the Kireji w/ little or no punctuation. Eg. “an icicle the moon drifting through it” — Matsuo Allard, Bird Day Afternoon, High/Coo Press, 1978 “pig and i spring rain” — Marlene Mountain, Frogpond, 1979 “i hope i'm right where the river ice ends” — Jim Kacian, Frogpond, 2012 Monoku creates a variety of ambiguities of perceived pause/cuts & grammatical status of individual words; allows multiple meditative readings. Variations break the line at a caesura (pause). Find Monoku form by John Wills, M. Kettner, Janice Bostok, Jim Kacian, Chris Gordon, Scott Metz, Stuart Quine, John Barlow, & others. • Fixed Form (or ZipLine) Haiku: The "zip" form (developed by John Carley) haiku = 15 syllables presented on 2 lines, each contains one caesura (pause/double-space). Eg. “buoyed up on the rising tide a fleet of head boards bang the wall” — John Carley, Magma, 2001 #britishcalifornia #portofvancouver #vancouverbyzeenite (at British California)

Stanton Moore & Scott Kettner At NAMM 2012
youtube
We happened to run across Stanton Moore and Scott Kettner at LP’s NAMM 2012 booth, where the two demonstrated the musical applications of the new Stanton Moore Pandeiro. With Moore on a hand percussion drum kit and Kettner playing a traditional pandeiro, the duo interwove Brazilian rhythms and techniques with greasy second-line street beats.

Scott Kettner is founder of Nation Beat and Maracatu NY. He’ll take the stage with both groups at 92YTribeca on September 16 (DJ Greg Caz is also on the bill). If you were curious, Kettner loves going to the beach, enjoys going to the mountains and being close to nature. He's also a big fan of the A-Team. We know this because we saw his video dating profile on a local cable channel access channel. Actually, that's not true. We know this because Scott Kettner is the latest subject of the 92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A series. Where do you go for news when you start your day? Usually The New York Times, NPR or the New York Daily News. What are your favorite websites? YouTube, Forroemvinil.com How much do you use Twitter and Facebook (or other social networking services)? I use Facebook everyday but not obsessively. I have my Twitter account connected to my Facebook account so every time I post on Facebook it automatically tweets. This keeps me from having to spend too much time with the social networking thing and makes more time for me to work on my projects and music. Read more on the 92Y Blog>>
