Wide Open Doors
Like a lot of people, Anne and I had grown up in “the church.” We’d both been through the rituals and the rites. We’d both been through variations of “Confirmation.” We met at a strict evangelical Bible college in 1989 and our experience there was less than satisfactory. To be honest, much of that is our own fault. But that’s another post for another time. We left that college, were married,…

See Scotts Bluff National Monument
See Scotts Bluff National Monument
Eight hundred feet above the North Platte River, Scotts Bluff was a landmark for Native Americans as well as emigrants on the Oregon Trail. We explored the 3,000-acre Scotts Bluff National Monument in the Nebraska Panhandle on our return trip home from the Black Hills. This summer, I am detailing our road trip to the Dakotas and Mount Rushmore as a series for a family adventure you might want…

i met a tour guide in iceland (and stayed in touch via social media) and i loved how he was excited to show us all some hidden gems and talk about his home country and i’m like... “i want to do something like that for my home state”
but no one ever comes to nebraska!! only to the big cities and leave or worse - just drive thru or fly over the state cause it’s  b o r i n g

Crop Duster - June 2022 As we were traveling from Chadron to Scottsbluff, Nebraska, we could see a crop duster plane repeatedly crossing the highway in front of us. Both Kathy and I tried to capture images of him as he zoomed back and forth across the highway avoiding power lines and antenna towers. MWM

Who, Then, Should We Welcome?
I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you. This is my covenant with you: I will make you the farther of a multitude of nations! These promises are found in Genesis 12:2-3 and Genesis 17:4. This…

1 and 4 for the museum asks!!
1. Favorite thing about museums?
Gotta be the stuff. And the things. They're just so full of stuff and things.
But seriously. The possessions people leave behind are fascinating. Why a sandstone loom weight instead of a granite one? Who wore that green dress, with the skirt as wide as a coffee table and the tiny waist? The story of the person who made this Scottsbluff point is important and interesting, but so is the story of the farmer who found it, and the 500-odd other artefacts he donated, and why.
That said, my favorite part of any North American museum is the first 20-ish feet, where the cases of "early prehistoric" artefacts are. They have a few words about the people who lived there, but nothing about the hundreds of kilometers that jade adze travelled. Nothing about the skill of the toolmaker who struck the final flute on that absolutely gorgeous point. There's secrets there, and usually even the curators don't know how to read them.
4. Weirdest thing you've seen in a museum:
Definitely my dad. Seen him in several museums, he's always the weirdest thing there.
But some other honorable mentions include:
The fetal humpback whale in a jar that's somewhere in the depths of the Royal BC collections right now.
The picture of a highway worker lying on the ground with a human-size mosquito looming over him in the Dawson Creek art gallery, circa 1940s.
An albino moose taxidermy in the Yukon.
The aerial photos of the dredge fields in Dawson City. Miles of swirling gravel mounds created in the 1800s and still there today, completely reshaped from the original landscape.
On a related note, the tour guide on Dredge 4 who pulled a thumb-size gold nugget out of his pocket and handed it around to all the tourists.
