They walked in silence before Roberta broke it again. “So... Scott?”

The blond turned towards her and replied with a soft “hm?”

“I heard you and Brett got into the softball team. Congrats.”

“Uh, yeah. Thanks. We didn’t really expect it, but we hoped.”

“You’re kidding, right?”

“Huh?”

“I mean, of course you’d get in. You’re two of the best players out there!”

Scott blinked. “Then you should be on the team too.” He blurted out impulsively.

It was Roberta’s turn to blink, slightly taken aback by his confession. Did he just declare she was a great player? That she was good? Well, he did mention the other night when they had their little basketball duel; that she was ‘pretty good’ for a girl... or guy, whatever that meant, but she didn’t think that he’d thought of her as good enough for a team as exceptional as their state’s. She didn’t realise that she had on a face until Scott’s voice broke her train of thoughts.

“Roberta? Are... you okay?” His voice laced with a twinge of fear, worried he might’ve offended her.

“Huh? Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.” She replied lamely. “Sorry, I kinda spaced out back there.”

Scott looked at her, unconvinced by her answer and felt a pang of guilt suddenly. “Sorry if I offended you. You probably would’ve loved to try out for the team and here I was seeming like I was rubbing it in your face. That wasn’t my intention, I swear.”

Roberta blinked at him yet again. What? He thought he’d offended her? He had just given her one of the best compliments anyone could ever give her and now he thinks he had offended her?

“No, you didn’t offend me at all! I was just- It’s just... I’ve never had anyone... compliment me like that before. It’s really flattering, don’t get me wrong- but wow-” she holds her forehead, “-a little overwhelming.”

“You’ve never gotten a compliment before?”

“Not like that at least. I’m... Thanks.” She finished lamely once again.

“Well, um... Thanks for yours too.”
