1082 class electric locomotive: Not much is known about this engine, so information is fragmented. This Austrain steam engine was powered by electricity heating up the water in its boiler through electric coils. The hydroelectric system was apparently 50 years ahead of it time and was built in response to the rising prices of imported German Coal during WW2. This engine and ones like it Sweden, were scrapped after the war ended. I'll never understand why. Such a self sufficient engine could have been the key to many break throughs.

2. DRG Class 05: This German streamlined engine was made in response of record breaking streamlined diesel engines made earlier. In 1936, this engine set the world speed record for reaching 124.5 mph, while hauling 217 short tons. However this record was later beaten by Mallard, (Yes, that Mallard. The LNER Gresley one.) on a technicality. Mallard was on a slightly downhill line, and with a heavier train. Interpret that as you will. If you want Gresley family drama, I have a feeling this engine would make a great OC to start it.

3. B&O #305 Camel: This unique engine was trademarked by the Baltimore and Ohio railroad in the 1900s. It's unusual build allowed to pull trains up steep mountains. This build also came with a terrible flaw. Since the cab was placed directly above the boiler, it became very hot and anyone in it would not only be uncomfortable, but in terrible danger if if the engine ever derailed. And there was very little protection for the crew. In short, it was like an overbred dog. Created purely for one purpose, and not with health or safety in mind. 4. The Rail Pickup Truck??? (GMC Switch Engine): Well, if you need a Fankid that's a cross between a steam engine and a pickup, I've got you covered! Haha! Not much information on these, except that they were used during WW2 and were modified for rail use.

5. Ateliers Moës-Freres Diesel: This little guy is absolutely adorable! He'd definitely make an cute OC! This engine one of many diesels built by the popular Belgian company Ateliers Moës-Freres. They're were know for making exceptional small diesel engines. Even ones that looked like steam engines! Unfortunately, I couldn't any information on what exactly this engine's name is. But if anyone does know, please contact me so I may add it!

6. M-497 (Nicknamed Black Beetle by the press): This futuristic engine was once the fastest engine in North America! It was an experiment, developed by the New York Central Railway. Two J47-19 Jet Engines were attached to a streamlined Budd Rail Diesel Car. The experiment was successful, with the engine reaching a speed of 183.68 mph. Despite the successful run and the valuable data gathered, the project was considered to quote "not considered viable commercially". Black Beetle continued to run after the jet engines were removed, until retirement in 1977 and being scrapped in 1984.

There are also different cars open for walking through depending on how their restoration projects have fared, allowing for different experiences as months pass.  Some cars, however, will probably never be open to foot traffic, like the “Ely,” Nevada Northern’s business class car (read: it’s really fancy) as the construction details and furnishings are just too easily damaged.

Sauer’s restoration included major metal work to repair what had been removed to suit as a track repair-foreman’s car, a configuration that lost many of the sumptuous fittings that made a Pullman a Pullman.  Restoration parts were also retrieved from “...other scrapped Pullman cars as well as eBay purchases and 3D printing.” [1]  The work Sauer did has re-created a truly amazing piece of railroad history; he donated the car to IRM in 2021.

Heavy Pullmans were all steel construction, or nearly; the “wood” was mostly faux-painted metal.  One reporter noted in 1917 that “One man can trundle in a single wheelbarrow all the wood that has gone into its construction.” [3]

Nevada Northern’s “Ely” demonstrates the kind of “Palace Car” that Pullman and company made their name, and fame, with:

IRM notes that the “...ornate interior remains almost entirely original,” [1] and is the oldest passenger car in the collection, dating to 1889.

“Well, yeah, of course, I trust you,” Tubbo replied immediately, adjusting his step to keep up with the taller boy, “but I also know that we need to be careful. You can’t be reckless like you usually are,” he warned. Tommy only grunted at him, and the two kept walking. They passed by stores and restaurants, hoping to find some help or a place to stay, but no luck. The window of every store had a sign that said "no androids allowed," and Tubbo knew that his LED would be a dead giveaway.

As the two were about to lose hope, Tommy's face suddenly lit up. “Oh, hey, look!” He exclaimed as the duo crossed the street. He pointed a finger over Tubbo’s shoulder. “That’s a motel over there, innit?” He asked, picking up his pace enthusiastically. “We could get a room for the night, sleep a little and get our shit together, huh?” He nudged Tubbo’s shoulder. “How 'bout it, bee boy?”

Tubbo rolled his eyes at Tommy and tilted his head.

“Are you sure there aren’t any other places around here?” Tubbo asked, eyes drifting over the rest of the town in search of a different option. “It looks too out in the open to be safe. Someone could easily find us,” he murmured, anxiously rubbing his hands together.

Tommy shrugged. “I just know that I don’t want to be sleeping in some fuckin’ dirty car or something all night. Let's just check it out, okay? What’s the worst thing that could happen?”

Tubbo made a mental list of all the outcomes but decided to keep quiet.

“Alright,” he conceded. “We can try it out, but it’s your fault if we get turned away or caught,” Tubbo huffed. “This stupid LED isn’t doing us any favors.” Tommy ignored him and crossed the street towards the motel, Tubbo close on his heels.

“Can you believe we got the room?” Tommy whisper-yelled to Tubbo as he fiddled with the room keys. “That lady at the desk didn't even ask us any questions! I think my masculine energy intimidated her,” Tommy boasted as he swung open the door. He set his bag down on a bed and flopped onto the sheets with a loud sigh. Meanwhile, Tubbo looked around the space for a bathroom and some tools. “Tommy, did you bring anything sharp?” he asked. “Like, scissors or something.”

The other boy sat up and rummaged through his sodden bag. “I have my sewing kit with me but no scissors,” he said, frowning. “I hope nothing happens to our clothes," he said, most likely to himself. "I won't be able to fix them." Tommy returned to laying down, facing away from Tubbo with a huff.

Tubbo grimaced and entered the small bathroom. Was it worth changing his hair if he was unable to remove the LED? He looked at his reflection in the mirror. He looked a right state, he thought disappointedly. His hair was wet and matted to his forehead from the rain, and he wore a dirt-smudged shirt. He pulled a lock of wet brown hair over his eyes and stared at it. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to change up his appearance a tad.

The android watched as snow-white pigment seeped through his once dark hair. A few wisps of brown were noticeable at the roots, but most of his hair had become pale as the moon. He blinked, pleased with himself, and wandered back into the bedroom where Tommy laid on the bed, staring at the ceiling. “What d’you think, bossman?” Tubbo asked, gesturing to his new hair.

Tommy glanced over and let out a snort of laughter. “What’s up with your ‘ead?” he asked jokingly, heaving himself into a sitting position. “Looks good, but why?”

Tubbo shrugged and sat on the bed opposite the human boy. “I dunno, I guess it might help us stay disguised,” he said, tracing the pattern on the bedsheets. “I’m eager to get rid of this LED, though.” A silence fell between them as the sounds of the city drifted into their room. Cars honking horns, people shouting, and wheels rolling through puddles filled the duo’s ears as they sat quietly in the room. “We can’t stay here for long, you know,” Tubbo said at last. “We should leave in the morning. Maybe find somewhere to go,” he suggested. “Is there anywhere else that’s safe? Maybe a different state or something?”

Tommy pulled out his phone, typing something. “Most states have some laws against your kind,” he said slowly. “I think our best bet is to head north, yeah? New York, Maine-”

“Canada?” Tubbo interrupted excitedly. “Yeah, I remember reading one of Wilbur’s magazines a while back! Canada doesn’t have any anti-android laws. If I get a bus or train ticket, I could be up there in at least three or four days!” he said with a grin. “I’ll have to leave you behind, though. It'll be alright! You won't need to be there anyway. It's my problem to solve.”

Tommy spluttered disbelievingly, setting his phone down. “Wha- the fuck are you on about, Tubbo? I’m coming with you, you can’t just take a train by yourself! Phil and the others will be fine without me, but you need someone to keep you out of trouble.” Tommy crossed his legs and smiled. “Enough about that,” he said, changing the topic. “I’m tired as balls, man, we’ve been running through the rain all night. I’m heading to sleep, alright?” he set his phone on the nightstand between their beds and turned off the lamp. “Night, Tubso.”

Tubbo laid back on his mattress and closed his eyes. “Goodnight, Tommy.”

The two woke up early the next day, pulling on their still-damp clothes and heading out the door. They agreed to take a bus to the northern part of Detroit, hoping to find tickets for a train heading north.

“Couldn’t you have found a better bus stop, Tommy?” Tubbo griped. “This one is next to the dump, the smell of garbage is pretty fucking ripe,” he said, waving a hand over his nose.

“Well, ex-CUSE me, Mr. Supercomputer,” Tommy retorted, “You’ve got so much knowledge in that noggin of yours, and you used none of it to find a better bus stop. Don’t start blaming me for this, I asked you multiple times if there was a closer one but you didn’t respond, that’s not my faul-”

“Wait, wait, wait, shut up for a second,” Tubbo demanded, cutting through Tommy’s ranting.

“Shut- don’t tell me to shut up! I’ll do what I damn well please, you b-"

“No, seriously, Tommy, be quiet,” Tubbo said, slapping a hand over the taller teen’s mouth. “Do you hear that?” The two stood silently for a moment before Tommy pried Tubbo’s fingers off his mouth. “What am I listening for?” Tommy asked, annoyed.

Tubbo didn’t respond. Instead, he picked up his pace to a light jog and hurried over to a nearby garbage truck. “It’s coming from here,” he muttered to himself. Hoisting himself onto the back of it, he peered into the open back of the truck. Ignoring Tommy’s protests, he leaned into the truck and surveyed the bags of trash. His eyes landed on the thing making the noise.

An android. A child android, to be specific, making croaking noises. Tubbo felt a pang in his heart, and he leaped into the bags of garbage to get a closer look. The child had messy brown hair that covered most of his eyes and no LED. Where skin should have been covering his face and hands, there was nothing, just glossy metal. One of his eyes was missing, and he sounded like his speaker box was damaged. “What happened to you?” Tubbo murmured to himself, pulled the android out from the piles of rubbish. The child didn’t fight against him, clinging to his arm as the two hopped out of the truck.

“What are you doing?” Tommy whispered angrily. “You can’t just go takin' shit from the trash!”

“He’s not shit, Tommy, he’s an android. I think he was going to be thrown into the dump, probably going to get crushed for scrap metal,” Tubbo squeezed the child’s hand tightly, heart softening as the boy clutched his pant leg in return. “I can’t leave him here. You know that,”

“Well, we can’t take him with us either, Tubbo! We’ll never have enough money for three train tickets, and it’s obvious he’s not human. We’ll get caught for sure!” Tommy protested. “You have to leave him here.”

The android’s chest tightened as he stared at the small boy hugging his leg. On on hand, needed someone to take care of him, and perhaps Tubbo was meant to be that person. On the other, it would be dangerous walking around with something that would get them caught so easily.

The Opossum (Deadly Premonition Fan Exchange 2019)

Summary: Polly asks York to help out with a pest problem at the hotel. It’s proving to be a little harder than catching the usual suspects.

Okay but seriously......

For the Deadly Premonition Fan Exchange/Secret Santa, I got @meme-queen-lucy. I heard you like opossums (a word I’m slowly still learning how to spell), so hopefully you’ll like this too. I also legit thought about making an opossum a deputy of Greenvale because I thought was something Swery would do lol. Too bad that didn’t make the final cut.

“This isn’t what I expected when I signed up for the FBI. Isn’t that right, Zach?”

It was nearly 9 am and the rain spattered with rhythmic force against the window pane in the dining hall.

With a half empty cup of coffee, York was thinking about what Polly had said moments ago,  before they finished breakfast and she excused herself from the table.

“Agent Morgan, if it’s not too much trouble…”

“What is it, Polly?”

There was an infestation problem in the hotel.

“But don’t you worry, it’s nothing too serious.”

It was an opossum. Just the one.

“Just the one?” he asked.

“Yes, I think so.”

She mentioned that she had spotted this particular little thing digging around the trash cans outside the hotel over the past few days. At first, she paid no attention to it. Animals never bothered Polly, especially not living in this part of the country. It reminded her of the times she and her husband had gone out on hikes through the woods many years ago. They took many photos of themselves with nature and her companions with a polaroid she still had in her possession.

However, this little rascal made it through the door.

This...could cause some issues with the hotel and its guests.

What to do…?

“Again, Agent Morgan, if it isn’t too much trouble. I’m much too old and slow to do it myself.”

“Of course, Polly. I’ll see what I can do. It’s just one possum. How hard could it be?”

Polly also made sure that he would not kill the animal once he found it.

Possums. They’re like raccoons or oversized rats. No different than any pest York had met in the city. Plus, it should be easier to catch this than any of the criminals he had pursued.  

Why didn’t I listen to you, Zach?

That was three days ago…

“Having a hard time there, Agent York?”

It was Emily. She was completing eating it up alongside lunch at the sheriff’s department.

“An agent of the bureau can’t catch one little possum.”

York rolled his eyes.

Just like grade school…

“I’m an officer of the law, Emily. I catch people, not animals. I’m not a hunter.”

“I know you’re not,” she smiled. He didn’t mind the sight of her like this, especially during this horrid investigation, but not at his expense. “But it’s pretty funny that you’re having so much trouble. Have you thought about asking for help? Maybe Thomas knows something about possums.”

Dammit, why haven’t we thought about that before?

Thomas did in fact know something about possums.

“Well, first off, it’s ‘opossum’ and not possum.”

“What’s the difference?” York shrugged.

“Only that opossums live here in North America while possums live in Australia.”

During another break in the late afternoon, near evening, Thomas went deep into detail about what he knew about them.

They are not rodents, but marsupials, and have pouches to carry their young. They have opposable thumbs and use their tails to grasp things.

“They have a vast diet too,” he mentioned, “and by that, I mean they’ll eat anything, including garbage. Every so often we get a call from someone asking if we could remove one from their trash bins.”

“I didn’t know the sheriff’s department handled animal control.”

“We don’t. We just don’t have anyone else to handle it. It’s a small town after all.”

After some further consultation, by the time the day was over and everyone had said their good nights, York was brainstorming his plan.

“I think, Zach,” he said on the drive back to the hotel, “we’ll need a trap of sorts. Maybe we could use the snacks we’ve collected in our room. We need a box or a cage or something like that…” The car neared Greenvale’s edge by the waters, the moon a bright crescent in a lonely sky.

He chuckled.

“Let’s hope it doesn’t turn out like Mouse Trap. Remember, Zach? 1997. I’m not planning on becoming Chris Walken here.”

It was nearing 8 by the time he made it to the hotel. He greeted Polly by the front desk and asked about her day. The television playing in the background droned on about tomorrow’s forecast as she answered.

“I saw that darn opossum again. He scurried past me in the kitchen earlier today. I think I saw him go down one of the corridors here. God knows where he is now. I hope he isn’t making a mess in one of my rooms.”

“Don’t worry about it, Polly. I’ve been hatching up a plan to catch the thing. By tomorrow morning, I’ll get a trap set up.”

Naturally, Polly was delighted to hear this.

After a late dinner, York said his good night to Polly before heading to his room.

“If I have to be honest, Zach, all I can think about is whether I should shower now or in the morning.”

With a yawn and his eyelids drooping, the agent opened the door to his hotel room. He took off his suit jacket, his hands slipping out the sleeves, and went to shut the door behind him and find the light switch.

That’s when he noticed the crumbs on the floor.

He almost missed it.

They were as plain as day in the light under York’s sleepy gaze. They looked like bread or cookie crumbs and they made a trail that led to the bed, just a few feet away. Near the foot of the bed, crumbs and various other scraps of food and packaging were scattered in a mess around the suitcase he had brought his clothes in. The suitcase itself was open and on the floor. His shirts and pants were scattered, thrown around the floor. 

By now, York was wide awake, gun in hand.

Each careful step warranted a wide sweep of the eyes across every possible hiding place.

A hotel room is an odd place to rob. Not to mention the fact that nothing looked to be stolen. The only item that was out of place was the suitcase. Nothing else was opened or turned over. What was the motive behind this strange crime scene?

There was a squeak, like one of a small animal, and York’s arm snapped forward, hands ready to fire his gun. 

By the far side of the bed, near the windows, one of his shirts had piled up. However, there was something hiding underneath it. It was rising and falling, like the rhythm of someone’s breath.

With a nimble hand, the other remaining on the gun, he went to pluck the shirt away.

There in the open was the opossum. And he appeared to be asleep.

That, or he had eaten too much, and was or on the verge of passing out in front of the agent in his own room. He laid on his side, little pink paws outstretched, tail curled against him, and tongue out on the floor, drooling himself a pool of spit. His eyes were half open, and his ears twitched every so often.

“Well, Zach,” York sighed, putting his gun back in his holster, “looks like we found the little rascal.”

Despite himself, York poked the animal with a pen from his pocket. He obviously wasn’t dead, but he definitely wasn’t quite conscious. He let out another squeak upon contact with the pen.

“He must have found my stash of snacks. That’s what I get for hiding them in my suitcase. Better call Thomas.”

He got up and headed for the phone.

The opossum remained where he was and continued his nap on the floor, gurgling into his little puddle of drool, while York dialled.
