It’s been quite a while since I watched this drama, so please don’t be too harsh on me. I can justify a part of my notes, but not all therefore my review is a bit shorter than I planned it to be. So, an eternity after I got the review on Tunnel out, here’s the review about the drama who aired before it and looks a lot like it, but is, to some extent, better.
Signal is a mystery supernatural crime drama. Lieutenant Hae-Young works as a criminal profiler, even though he doesn’t have much credibility (and he doesn’t help himself by helping reporters to track down celebrities). One day, he stumbles on a walkie-talkie, which allows him to enter in contact with Detective Jae-Han, in 2000. Through a communication, Hae-Young will learn vital clues to solve a cold case who involved one of his classmates, near its limitation date. As Soo-Hyun and Hae-Young help each other solve cases, Hae-Young will try to uncover the truth behind the detective sudden disappearance.
As always, I tried to put the less spoilers it was possible in the review, but some might have escaped me, so please stay careful as you read.
For the plot, let’s say it starts well, but the more the story progresses, the more it becomes a load of nonsense. Let me explain myself. At first, let’s say that the idea is great. I mean, it’s super original and the scriptwriter took the time through the drama to explain everything that happened and make sure the viewer didn’t feel left behind. The story line is really interesting as well as the cases who are presented in it, even though they fit the usual crime drama schema that is found in many dramas. At the same time is there a lot of crime who would have the potential to go cold? The answer would be yes because the lack of evidence is the key of a case going cold, but here wasn’t my point. The drama has to present interesting cold cases who are beyond horror, so the viewer will be intrigued (even though, often, high profile cases don’t go cold, but guess Korea isn’t exactly as the U.S. (Of course I know there’s a lot of cold cases, but high-profile cases as the Zodiac Killer aren’t closed or cold, they are still active and under investigation).). So it’s kind of normal that all the cases look like each other through the dramas (also because there’s a huge cold case of serial killing in Korea, so it’s normal that writers are inspired by it). I liked how, in the end, every cases were linked, even though I felt as if the scriprwriter wanted to put her characters in the case too much. Like, I could understand why the lieutenant was linked to the first case, but, after that, I felt as if she was just trying so hard to make them connect to have a ‘’big picture’’ who depict the corruption among the society due to human’s greed.
Since I started writing this review, a second season was said to be writen someday, so I guess that I have nothing else to add unless they don’t take back the same characters. I mean, the ending of Signal was quite shaky and was frustrating, so if all the characters are back for the second season, I will be pleased and completely forget how useless I found the ending.
I think I want to start the characters section by talking about Detective Chae Soo-Hyun. At first, I thought she was quite annoying because of how lovestruck she was. I mean, her character seemed to mostly revolves around that, which was quite typical. But, after watching the whole drama, I have to admit that, in the end, she’s quite bad-ass and is absolutely genial as a cop once you pass over the fact that she so badly wants to find Jae-Han. Then, maybe I should write a little bit about the lead, which would be Park Hae-Young. Personally, I thought he was too involved. Everything was too close to him and all the cases were about him or the people he knew. This bothered me a little bit simply because it was brought as a coincidence rather than being open about the fact that, in truth, everything was linked to Sun-Woo’s case (by the way, Sun-Woo’s ending is so awful - but Chan-Hee did a good job considering how young he is... No... That’s not my Fantasy side speaking...) at the opposite of Memory Lost in which the screenwriter makes it apparent that everything is about the Alphabet Syndicate. The only thing I was quite pleased with Hae-Young was the fact that he wasn’t the usual overly talented profiler that always managed to find the suspect. In truth, from what I remember, he didn’t do much aside from making sure to follow what he was told. Also, his lack of faith in the police was a must. I think there are rarely officers who don’t trust the forces (since it seems a little bit illogical), so it was a bit different. Lastly, I should discuss about Lieutenant Lee Jae-Han who was completely bad-ass because he was the cliché devoted cop who was ready to put everything aside for the sake of the people. These three characters were probably what I was the more pleased with. Sure, I kind of liked that the killers were given a back story, that the characters were well-linked and that their links were explained in such way that it seemed coherent (even though it didn’t seem 100% realistic), but there were a lot of things I didn’t like. The characters had really little development. A lot of characters that seemed important were given a really little role and didn’t have depth - by example, the people from the cold case unit. Also, there were way too much “death” that ended up being “fake” death because they managed to play with the past in such way that it wouldn’t happen... I think that this last part was probably what bothered me the most because I hate when there are fake death or characters are super resilent.
I’ll conclude there since it’s been quite a while since I watched the drama. The plot would be worth a 8/10 mostly because of how messy the ending was and how predictable it was sometimes to figure out who the “bad guy” was. The characters would be a 3/5 mostly for the three leads. The tearjerker factor would be a 3/5.
