Why circumstances don't matter..

I was reading @etherealkissed88's post about why circumstances are neutral, and something really clicked. I’m going to explain it using Lola and Athena as examples—because as a Tam Kaur fan, I absolutely adore those two!

It's snowing today!

Lola: "Ugh, now I can't drive, I'm gonna freeze, what a horrible day! Everything is going to shambles!"

Athena: " OMG It’s snowing!! Like Lorelai Gilmore said—I smell snow! Magic is here! The whole city is so beautiful 😍"

Lola: "I knew it! I scared him off. I shouldn't have texted. He thinks I'm desperate."

Athena: "Eh, it's just network issue. I know he adores me and thinks the world of me. We’re good."

Job Interview Result is Delayed!

Lola: "It's been three days, no email. I probably bombed it. Why did I even hope? They hated me."

Athena: "Three days? That means they're seriously considering me! They're probably checking references and getting approvals!"

Friends Didn’t Invite Them?

Lola: "They went out without me? They must hate me. I’m always excluded."

Athena: "Ah, maybe it was a quick plan. I’m still loved and valued—they’ll include me next time."

Same snow. Same silence. Same delay. Same circumstances. But totally different reactions. Same event. Completely different stories.

That’s because circumstances are neutral. They’re not good or bad. They just... are.

They gain their meaning only based on the lens you use to look at them. And what’s that lens made of?

Your assumptions. Your state. Your inner story.

So next time your 3D feels "off", ask: am I reacting to the past? Or choosing my now? Because taking current circumstances as permanent truth is like saying:

"I read today’s news in yesterday’s newspaper."

You can’t. You literally can't. Because It’s outdated.

Your perception creates your reality. Your mind is the scriptwriter. Circumstances? Just the props. So rewrite your circumstances. Shift the meaning.

And always remember: You’re the only operant power in your reality.

Ok honestly, the reason I'm super obsessed w OPLA Zolu is bcs I used to be a film student and I definitely know most of what they show in OP scenes are intentional with actual purposes regarding their relationship, plot, etc. by using cinematography (angles, lightings, etc.). So whenever i watch Zolu scenes, I get this feeling they're trying to prioritize their dynamic most of all. Even their dialogues have so many parallels in scriptwriting. But i just love to focus in this particular scene (obv. peak Zolu moment) :

I really love how they have solely one warm lighting, focused from Luffy's direction towards Zoro, as a way to show, in this scene that Luffy's presence is so important and meaningful to Zoro's character development as he recovers (he lost and broke down). I've compared this scene to other scenes at the same location but their lightings were much different than this.

Andd the fact they framed them with this close-up in a very close intimate look and vibes, leaving no space between and around them, really is a masterpiece for Zolu Nation lmao. 😍😍 And these techniques can tell us their relationship is beyond meaningful and deeply intimate in their own ways. could you talk more about your film ma? that's literally my dream degree

yes of course!!! i did a film and tv studies ba for my undergraduate and just loved it so much!! especially bc it was also tv not just film which gave me joy <3

it was sort of perfect because you get to combine a bunch of subjects into one like there are elements of sociology, psychology, art, history, politics, philosophy etc, and then you get to use them to talk about movies and tv 😍

bc i do film studies it's basically entirely essays (which is what i prefer) but you can take other modules like directing or scriptwriting which I had fun with too!! There are also film production courses which are more practical

But anyway i loved my undergraduate course so much i had to do a masters bc i didn't want it to end 😭 it's a lot more intense in terms of workload but also the professors definitely give you more attention!! also the classes are really small which can be intimidating but overall i think is nicer!! and i also like how it's more specific rather than general

and after this I'm hoping to do a film PhD (which I've been accepted for, I just need to figure out funding 💔)

Idc that people say that he never spent enough time with his kids in the past(especially with Sasha) but i just know that he was and still is a good father to her. Even in those old small videos you can see how his eyes light up whenever he talks about or with Sasha(and Kyrylo too).

Absolutely yes to both! 😍 (and super pretty now!)

The fact that both kids have such a loving and close relationship with him says everything. You don't have that with a parent who is not present and doesn't care.

I also think, sometimes people have a wrong image about him "being away". The only times he was away was when he was filming or touring / working somewhere else. And even in these cases, he tried to take his family with him as much as possible. Most of the time, he was in Kyiv and working in the office. And both of them, especially Olena, said over the years that he would always come home in the evening and they had family dinner, and he was always invested in the kids life. He bought them presents, he took care of them. He was there for every important day and event. Like Sasha's first school days. Ze would sometimes travel the whole night, with no sleep, just to be there and take her to school on the first day, since it was their ritual.

Olena basically took care of the everyday stuff and the household and the main part of raising the children (which is how it is in most families, especially that generation). Also, as author and scriptwriter, she had a much more flexible and better schedule for all that.

And Ze clearly loves and adores his children. 🥰 And especially in the current interviews, it's very evident how much he misses them.

❤️Newest obsession: Critical Role / D&D (Sort of new-ish). I have made even more progress into Critical Role’s first campaign and, like before, I am still hooked and I am determined to see it until the end. Plus, I’m waiting to finish watching the campaign so that I can watch the Vox Machina show! As for D&D in general, my brain is running wild with four new characters I want to make, and I’ve been reading up on types of spells recently. 🎥 Last three movies I watched and what I thought of them:

Inside Out 2: It was cute! I went out with some friends to watch it so it was an overall good time. I had a few criticisms where I think the movie could have benefited, but I’m glad I saw it.

Sunset Boulevard: Another movie I’m glad I watched, especially with it being a classic in film history and with me being someone who’s interested in the world of writing. Even though I never watched the movie before, I recognized some of the quotes because they’re so well known. It reminded me a lot of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, but with a movie star and scriptwriter spin on it. I enjoyed it and wouldn’t mind watching it again.

Jaws:  A CLASSIC. I’ve watched this movie like, what, 100 times? I love it. My family loves it.  It’s our ‘tradition’ to watch it on the Fourth of July because that’s when the movie takes place. Jaws quotes are my second language.

🎶 Three songs I’ve discovered recently and loved:

"Espresso" - Sabrina Carpenter: A song that my friends introduced me to. On car rides together they would play it frequently and it eventually stuck with me. I actually didn’t like it at first, but it grew on me and now it’s added to my playlist.

Red Wine Supernova - Chappell Roan: Again, another song that my friends introduced me to on car rides. I really like the beat of this one and Chappell Roan’s voice in the chorus with the music flowing together to create a pleasant melody I like!

Forbidden Feeling - CG5: I love this song too much not to mention it. The beat is catchy and the music video for it is so cool since it’s all done in one shot. I’m currently jamming out to it as I write this.

📺 Currently Watching: Critical Role, if that counts. But also reality competition shows like Master Chef, The Wall, Below Deck, and on another rewatch of Everybody Loves Raymond because my family and I put it on as ambiance at this point. Oh, and CHiPS but I’ve kind of paused watching that- *cough* because the sixth season is painfully bad right now *cough*

📖 Currently Reading:  I haven’t read anything recently! But I have You Talkin' to Me: The Definitive Guide to Iconic Movie Quotes, Wings of Fire: Escaping Peril, Eragon, Fourth Wing, and Where the Crawdads Sing on my to-read list when I get the chance!

🎮 Currently Playing: Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (the last bonus chapter), Pokemon Black and White, and I want to start The Great Ace Attorney soon! (That or the Apollo Justice Trilogy when I buy it!).

New Life Begins ep 1-14 Review!

Before even a minute could pass I immediately loved the intro, and worldbuilding of nine regions. I straightaway made a list so I can keep track of the backdrop.

On to the actual episode, I did like some parts about it but mostly I thought this is too much character introduction for a drama opening. Too many things to keep track of. But it was funny and cute so I kept watching.

By ep 4 I started feeling like...

This drama felt like something written by me (I have ocd and am extremely detail-oriented)

Except that's not a praise. It felt like written by a delulu me out of control 😂

▪︎There are 9 provinces in this universe. You need to remember facts and points about all of them whenever the drama name drops them.

▪︎ There are girls from these different provinces and about 5 princes. You need to remember all their characteristics.

▪︎One Prince has 24 consorts, I kid you not, that he named based on 24 solar terms

A me 10 yrs ago would write something like this, I thought. (Now I have better control 🤭) It was highly amusing to watch in the sense you are reading your childhood diary rambles lol.

I have no idea how the drama makers kept track of who is who. Viewers can watch it with no problem if they don't think too hard, but for someone like me who had to hog on every detail, this was simply overload. It looks like a detail oriented person's catnip on surface, but is actually nightmare.

And once I stopped being pulled in all 8 directions by the various character flocks in this drama, I started noticing tiny loose-plot things about it. Once again, it felt like the scriptwriter/author was too focused on the number-game-nerding with as much as characters possible and making them interact in this wild network, so they didn't have time to work on finer details that would make a story sensible.

I thought I was gonna drop and was like "maybe let's watch today's eps too".

And boy, am I glad that I did.

Like a switch turned on, I suddenly started liking it from ep 6. And I only became more enamoured onwards! I have no idea what caused this, maybe I got used to the numerous background details of the story. Maybe the story *itself* chilled down a bit with its worldbuilding and started on with what it came to accomplish.

It is incredibly feminist! 😍 I realised this by ep 7, which delivered ABOVE and BEYOND and woah, I was suddenly in love.

I was supremely impressed with the portrayal of feminism in Danchuan. When I first saw the summary of the 9 regions, I liked Jichuan the best (obviously) and was hesitant about Danchuan because it sounded like just another stereotypical attempt at toxic feminism where it is not at all different from patriarchy except with genders reversed. Aka what a lot of people imagine feminism to be as shown in Romance of Tiger and Rose.

But Danchuan.... their logic, their values..all so sensible, considerate and extremely progressive. They do not seem like a group of women who terrorised a province and took men for slaves, rather they are a bunch of chill ladies minding their own business and if the men are humbled and mature enough to not be offended by that, they get to stay! There was no unnecessary belittlement to men. Rather they just cared very much (as they should) about equality, consent and self respect and would not settle for anything less.

(The following two lines by Madam Danchuan stuck with me. It really spoke for their core belief: that they would never force a woman to do anything against her will and choice.)

And from that moment it became THE feminist Chinese costume drama of the year! What is it about November? Last year it was Marvelous Women 💕.

And it did not stop at the Danchuan arc!

I already was liking how New Life Begins touches on various ideologies (patriarchy, polygamy, monogamy, matriarchy) all at once. But I didn't expect a 100% satisfying outcome as that is simply too much deep topics for a single simple Web drama.

A complaint I always had about historical dramas' typical portrayal of women is that they always make it look like the ladies had no other use of their time than scheming how to bring the other ladies down so they can have the man's affection to themselves.

And I was like... surely in a society where polygamy was the norm there was at least one or two examples of functional and peaceful families where the ladies were smart, knew their worth and didn't care for a man who didn't care for them in return?

Last year's Marvelous Women was a gem that set the bar high on this front, where the women joined forces instead of torturing each other pointlessly. When such nuanced portrayals are a rarity even in the "serious historical" genre, I did not expect any at all in a simple fluffy costume drama like New Life Begins.

But it has already blown my mind with how nicely the ladies are written! How they value themselves first and foremost, how mature and intelligent they are with independent personalities that do not revolve around a man. They are capable of thinking for themselves and change the world and its expectations of them by their own will. Even if there were one or two characters that started too narrow-mindedly, they also eventually flipped a new page by working their own brains!

It is not even halfway aired, but New Life Begins has already set a new high bar, because it is showing how to write cool women in all family dynamic genres, all at once!

Be it an ideal monogamy, or a fantastical matriachy, or even a traditional polygamous society, smart and sensible women can exist in all these genres! If they don't then it is laziness of noone's but the writer.

Good job, New Life Begins writer!

What is feminism? For me, it means treating women as the intelligent creatures they are. Accepting that even in the most patriarchal and oppressive societies, women did have their own agency and are not unnecessarily victimised. Letting them own up their decisions and choices. That they did not fall over each other at men's feet all the time and were in need to be rescued and "educated" by a "modern-thinker". This is the narrative a lot of "feminist" dramas/movies push, which is actually disguised savior complex that feeds male supremacy more than they'd like to think.

It is sad just how much viewers are used to crappy female charcter designs in period dramas to the point if we see a woman behaving progressively we start thinking it's unrealistic.

I always wanted a period drama where marriages of convenience happen, but instead of raising a mess of unnecessary misunderstanding and drama galore about it, the characters are level headed and respectful to each other while they use the situation to their benefit. I am not at all mad about the addition of Yuanying's role, because honestly in the overall picture of C costume drama land we have too little of sensible non-toxic AND powerful main wife characters.

This has so far been a VERY satisfying experience because this is everything I dreamed of, and you know how exhilarating it is when you get this very specific headcanon for a fanfiction and then you actually DO manage to find a one that is already written? Yeah, exactly like that.

It is so funny that at the beginning I thought "this feels like something I have written, except 10 years ago and more delulu" because my now revised opinion means I can praise myself! 😂 Now I really want to meet and chat with this writer over tea about our shared delulu and also quite good tastes! 🤭😌

Oh and I forgot to add, I really like that Li Wei hesitates a lot about whether to stay or leave, despite her loving Yin Zheng.

This indecisiveness of her wasn't frustrating to me. I completely get it. She respects other people's lifestyles, but she also has boundaries about what works for her. Also she's homesick, she loves her parents and brother and wants to be with them too!

On the other hand I find it unrealistic when a character falls in love they are suddenly willing to leave everything behind just so they can be with this new person. I never understand this (except in cases where that character's past life sucked and family members were toxic so they wanted to leave).

I'm someone who'd be like: If you want me, you'll have to come live at my place🤣

Last but not least, New Life Begins did wobble on its feet a lot as there are too many eggs in the bucket from the get go, but no matter how not 100% strong the writing may be, the drama's heart is in the right place and it will not dissapoint you. At first it might feel like it is quite touch-and-go on various worldviews and ideologies, but it is actually very thorough and raises a number of "Why not?" questions. Quite unexpectedly so for a fluffy costume rom-com. I have literally zero complaints about any character. Do give it a chance!

6: How do you get inspiration?

I did already answer this but I have a few more things to say AHA I talk a lot. I mentioned how I use real life experience to get ideas, but I also get a lot of inspo from my bff (she’s more of the ideas person when we’re writing together.) To @kailleiobrien ily thank you for being big brain and supplying ur wacky ideas

12: Do you have a go-to writing playlist? (want to link?)

spotify is a lifesaver, no cap. I usually listen to my ever-growing kpop playlist because I prefer to not have english lyrics while I’m writing, but I also have 4-5 different mood setters I like to listen to. I have a writing playlist that I only listen to on special occasions as well.

24: Any authors that inspired you?

OKAYYY so there’s this one series (The Mysterious Benedict Society) and I’ve read it SO MANY TIMES because the writing style is just *chef’s kiss*. It’s by Trenton Lee Stewart... I actually don’t know much about him, I just know that I am actually in love with all the books I’ve read by him.

Also, L.M. Montgomery and Jane Austen -- especially because they were from time periods where women were ?? objects and did not have brains ?? but some of their books are really ahead of their time, and have always inspired me to write better and tell more stories. (I love Emily of New Moon and Sense and Sensibility.)

48: What mainly runs through your mind when watching TV or films?

I’m always thinking about the camera operators and the actors and the scriptwriters. I can’t turn it off. When I’m watching something, I wonder “how was that actress feeling that day? was she really able to cry? what was she really thinking about that made her cry? was she that immersed in the character?” and “that was an interesting camera shot. I wonder how many times they had to shoot that scene. how many cameras are in the room? how do they make ROOM for all the cameras?” and of course “that was a good line. that was a really good line. i would like to shake the writer’s hand and pat them on the back because that was a really good line.”

it’s good because I learn a lot from watching TV and stuff, but ... it’s exhausting because my brain does not relax. yikes.

hello, @noelleydances 🤗it’s definitely okay to call me a Filipino because I am one! I’ve also learned in school, daily life, articles/post that the word “Filipino” is already gender neutral! In fact, The pronouns used in the Philippines are gender neutral too! We don’t have the concept of she and him. We actually refer to someone as siya/ikaw :) hehehe

And ah, it makes me SOOOOO happy you think i deserved to be ABSCBN / GMA’s scriptwriter 🥺 (also it made me miss writing tagalog stories, it’s been so long 😭 +++ i miss writing without worrying about grammatical errors and misspellings)

The concept of people seeing in black and white isn’t really uncommon so I figured it’s best to spice things up by making the character see colors only if their soulmate has finally admitted their true feelings!

One of the aspects I adore of this game is the fact that the actors shares similitudes with their characters, not only physically, but also concerning their close relationship, in-game and in real life. Shawn has stated that he originally wasn’t an actor and that Ned and Steven gave him advices and guided through the mo-cap process and they’re proud of Shawn about how much he’s grown up as an actor, while, similarly in the game, Michael and Trevor are like the daddies of Franklin who taught them to become a better criminal, and they’ve said they’re proud of him, as @zebra3girl as well pointed.

I feel that the scriptwriters hit it right when decided to include three playable characters in the game, because thanks to it, the actors could meet and forge a deep friendship, with such a chemistry I’ve seen in very few occasions in life 🥺 This game is just amazing for this detail, and I don’t think there is any old or new game that could beat it (i.e. in the narrative/character design aspect).

I hope we could see them reunited again soon for a DLC or even a movie (??) of GTA V 😍 I love them with all my heart 💙💚🧡
