Project Managers Scrum skills

In this post I thought i would reflecting a little on if I think it is important for a project manager to possess knowledge in agile methods such as scrum or similar. I myself am a certified ScrumMaster and have worked in projects where the role of ScurmMaster has existed but also in projects where the role hasn´t existed but the tasks still have been needed to be done.

A ScrumMaster's tasks in a project can be summarized briefly to: • Coach/lead the development team • Clear obstacles so the team can develop more • Keeping stakeholders informed about the status of the project

Quite similar to what one expects from a project manager, right? As a project manager you are responsible for coaching the group that is part of the project. If there are factors that prevent the project from moving forward, you as a project manager need to make sure they are solved. It is also the role of the project manager to keep the project stakeholders informed of the project's status.

So do all projects need both a ScrumMaster and a project manager? Do you want a generalized answer then no, but it obviously depends on. It depends on both the type of project and the size of the project. If it is a small development project, it works quite well for a project manager to act ScrumMaster or for a ScrumMaster to act as project manager. If it is a larger projects that has a long timeline, many stakeholders and a number of development teams, I think it is very good to have both a designated ScrumMaster and a project manager. 

So how much does a project manager need to know about agile methods? My answer is, it depends, on both the type of project you will work in and how the organization looks. But a general answer is that you should have an understanding of it, because you will encounter it in your professional life for sure.
