some nifty thrifting tips

hello world! i had a lil thrifting adventure today and i bought a beautiful embroidered romper for $3! hehe. i also wanted to share my experience and some tips and tricks for y’all out there, so let’s all celebrate the birth of this baby post! HERE WE GO.

WHY THRIFT?

thrifting is a great and more affordable + sustainable alternative to fast fashion (click to watch a really informative and interesting video on fast fashion made by a singaporean environmentalist that i follow and admire!). thrifting secondhand = not consuming new materials producing the new clothes that we get. prices can be as low as $1 and for some shops, the proceeds go to social causes (like the scwo new2u thrift shop).

so really, satisfying our ~unending need to consume~ AND doing a good deed? what could beat that?

BEFORE YOU GO

i’m not gonna lie - thrifting can definitely be rather time consuming. i can spend 1-2 hours at a place and leave with only 1 piece of clothing or even none! while this can be unavoidable at times, it’s good to be prepared so you can save some time and love your purchases.

have an idea of what you are looking for. for example, I love whites, lightweight fabrics and summery pieces. so i kept those preferences in mind and looked out for them while going through the racks - which helped narrow the pile and made it much easier to find something that suited my tastes. you can ask yourself a few questions: what colours am i looking for? what materials do i like? what flatters me and what doesn’t? what events/activities do i need clothes for?

know your size. i saw a few pieces that i liked but were not in my size and 1) i definitely couldn’t fake it till i made it and 2) i didn’t know how to alter to be a good fit. i used to just buy clothes that didn’t fit me and say “i’ll just try to alter them at home!” but it never really happened so... unless you are sure that you are going to do something about it, don’t buy it.

dress appropriately! wear something easy to get on and off so that it’s easier to change in the dressing room. maybe even something that you wear often or represents your wardrobe well, so you can see if something will match with the rest of your clothes. and definitely something comfy because you’re gonna sweat, especially in this singapore weather.

bring cash. some thrift shops accept cashless payments, some don’t - so to be on the safe side, just have cash on hand.

ask a friend along! it is so good to have a friend with you who can help you with your decisions and give you their opinion (if that’s what you need). PLUS, it’s a great activity to spend more time with your friends and bring them over to the *sustainable side*!

and don’t forget to bring your own bag to put your purchases, because we love a sustainable sister who doesn’t need plastic bags!

WHILE THRIFTING

“what do you think about this?” “EH it’s quite nice leh!”

it’s honestly pretty easy to get carried away by the low prices and the fact that there’s (usually) only one of any item. having been a victim of the “okay I’m just gonna get it” and regret combo, I’ll probably take some of my own advice.

ask yourself these questions before you decide to buy something: do i really need it? where/what would i wear it to? how often will i wear it? what would i wear it with? do i like it? how would i look in it? i think it’s really important to be sure of what you’re getting because *CONSCIOUS CONSUMERISM*! plus, don’t waste your money on something you’ll barely even wear/that will just be sitting around!

try the clothes on - especially the ones you’re unsure of! if you’re not sure of how it’ll fit, try it on. if you’ve never worn something like that before, try it on! i was about to buy a pair of shorts that i really liked the pattern of and it seemed like it would look nice - but after trying it on, i realised that it really wasn’t for me and that was that. back on the rack it went.

keep an open mind. thrifting is a great way to explore new styles because there are so many different and unique pieces! so don’t be afraid to switch it up a lil.

look out for parts that need fixing and ask yourself if you can fix them. for example, a missing button. a broken strap. stains or holes on the fabric. some things a simple thread and needle can fix, but some things may require more advanced skills (which i unfortunately lack). are you okay with them? and if you’re not, are you able to fix them?

practise patience and perseverance. hey look! another benefit: the qualities that thrifting instills in you! ok but seriously, you have to be prepared to flip through the racks. at one look, some racks may seem uninteresting but you really have to flip through them and you might find some hidden gems. you might not always find what you want that day but try again another day! another place! another time! thrift shops are constantly having their items updated so you never know what you’re gonna get.

AFTER

happy with your purchases? YOU GO GIRL. but don’t forget the following:

wash wash wash. remember to wash all the clothing that you’ve gotten! they can be rather dusty so get ‘em clean.

get fixing! get sewing, get washing. some items can be fixed up really easily, like I’ve sewn on a button (just google for a tutorial) or shortened some straps to make things good as new and fit me even better. and it’s perfect!

Our uniform and performances

Welcome back!

For today's topic, I'd like to write to you about our uniform at different performances. Basically, uniforms symbolize the togetherness and the uniformity of the orchestra. Over the years the uniform has changed a lot. The uniform was completely different than now. There was a uniform with red vest and white shirt about 20 years ago. I can't give an opinion about it due to the fact that not only I haven't played music, but I haven't even lived at that point in time. 

A few years later the orchestra changed the red vest for the more modern red T-Shirt. 

The uniform was changing again for a burgundy coloured T-Shirt when I was entered into an orchestra. I really liked to wear this because it was modern and I love burgundy anyway.

I had so many musical experiences while I was wearing it. For example, my first concert or different kinds of performances such as a march. Although, the march is quite spectacular from the outside but difficult to carry out inside because it requires a lot of concentration to be able to step and play the tracks well at the same time.

Of course, our conductor directs this action perfectly, while he is lifting the stick we are moving with a left foot simultaneously and always marching to the beat of the music. Fortunately, we have an aid to play the tracks perfectly. The sheet music is fixed to the instruments with a special tool, so we don’t have to play all the songs by memory.

A new idea came this year to change the colour of T-Shirts. We thought a lot about what would be best. The mans considered the grey colour the best while the women the dark blue, so we got an idea to have two colours, grey for men, dark blue for women. Someone had an idea that we could have a Hungarian flag on the T-shirts because we use to take part in international competition and the flag indicates that we are from Hungary. All member considered the flag as a great idea. And look at our current uniform. I think it’s amazing and really ours.

We have another uniform for more formal events, performances and competitions. On these occasions, we usually wear black since black is the colour of elegance and formality. The men usually wear black shirts and trousers; women wear black pretty dresses with high-heeled.

Corrosion resistance of Inconel grades for chemical waste water processing units

Corrosion performance of Inconel 600 and 825 is evaluated in supercritical water comprising sulfides at 520oC and 25 MPa. The scales developed on alloy 600 comprised of a thick external layer of pure Ni3S2 and an inner layer predominantly of chromium enriched spinels with Ni3S2 network inside. The films of Incoloy 825 had multilayered structure. The external layer mainly comprised of Ni3S2 and (Ni,Fe)3S4, after a thicker intermetallic mixture of chromium enriched oxides. Incoloy 825 shows superior performance to Inconel 600 due to presence of higher chromium concentration in alloy 825. The partial pressures of oxygen and sulfur in the designated condition, the related corrosion mechanisms were evaluated.

A large magnitude of organic wastewater comprising sulfides are produced from industrial processes. Besides to various organic pollutants, it also comprises some inorganic sulfur containing species such as S2-, HS- and H2S, causing diverse impacts on human health and natural ecological condition.

By capitalizing on the features of water in the supercritical region, supercritical water oxidation, has been proven to be a suitable and clean technology to treat a variety of organic wastes. Due to absence of mass transfer resistance between organic compounds and oxidants that are mutually soluble, the immediate and quick oxidation of almost any pollutant is received with a high destruction and elimination efficiency not below 99% at standard service conditions of 25 Mpa, 55oC and residence times of 60 seconds or below. During the supercritical water oxidation process, the organic compounds are oxidized fully by oxidants into carbon dioxide and water. Organic nitrogen is mainly converted into N2 with or without nominal traces of N2O. The non-uniform atoms of chlorine, sulfur or phosphorous present in the organic wastes are converted in corresponding mineral acids of HCl, H2SO4 or H3PO4 respectively. Specifically, the sulfides in aqueous waters can be fully oxidized in sulfate. Till now, the study for more than three decades has resulted in a considerable maturation of SCWO technology and full scale application has become the objective of SCWO technology. It has been seen that SCWO equipments have the potential to fix the large variety of high concentration refractory and organic waste water problems. These include processing of sulfide containing wastewater, municipal sludge in an environment friendly, effective and economical manner.

The super-critical water oxidation is an elevated temperature and pressure oxidizing reaction, usually the supply needs to be preheated up to supercritical conditions. Therefore it is of importance to understand the performance scale of service materials.

High strength Inconel 718 wire and Hastelloy C276 are supreme performing material in pure supercritical water. The oxide layers produced on nickel based alloy show duplex layer with nickel and iron rich in the external layer and chromium rich in the inner layer which suitably prevents the outward diffusion of alloying elements and the internal diffusion of oxygen ions, hence decreasing corrosion rate of the substrate. Differing from the working fluids used in supercritical power plants and conceptual supercritical water cooled reactors, the feed streams found in superheaters for water oxidation usually comprise large magnitudes of organic compounds and inorganic salts.

My instrument

Hello again, 

I'd like to write to you in this post how I became a musician and about my instrument. First of all, I was starting to play an instrument when I was about 8 years old. My class master at my primary school started to make a flute study group, and I joined that. This provided a good foundation for my later musical studies. Two years later, I started to learn at a conservatoire.  I was faced with an instrument choice decision to bring an easier decision, my mom took me to an orchestral concert. During the course of the concert, conducted by my music teacher and my later conductor, I fell in love with this orchestral feeling and chose my instrument that became a clarinet. At that point in time, I started learning to play this instrument. Fortunately, the conductor was the clarinet teacher at the music school. I've really enjoyed working together with him, and he taught me everything about music and life. Three years later, I entered the orchestra, which I had been waiting for a long time.

My instrument is a clarinet that belongs to a family of woodwind instruments. Johann Christoph Denner is generally believed to have invented the clarinet. The clarinet uses a single reed type of grass. Reeds may also be manufactured from synthetic materials. The ligature fastens the reed to the mouthpiece. When air is blown through the opening between the reed and the mouthpiece facing, the reed vibrates and produces the clarinet's sound. The clarinet consists of 6 parts such as mouthpiece, ligature, barrel, upper joint, lower joint and bell. Interestingly, the barrel part of the instrument may be extended to fine-tune the clarinet. The pitch of the clarinet is fairly temperaturesensitive, some clarinets have changeable barrels whose lengths vary slightly. For pitch variation and tuning can be made by pulling out the barrel and thus increasing the instrument's length, particularly it is common in group playing in which clarinets are tuned to other instruments such as in an orchestra.
