Today’s Functional Friday movement is the SQUAT! A squat is typically associated with working out in a gym but, we utilize this movement all day when picking up our children, lifting and carrying objects, and getting in/out of a chair. It is crucial to squat with proper form to prevent injuries and break down of our joints over time. Here are some quick tips to focus on to maintain great squat form when doing activities throughout your day or when working out: Maintain an upright posture focusing on keeping your chest up Keep your knees in line with your second toe Activate glute/hip muscles as the primary movers to prevent increased stress on the knees If you have any questions or comments please leave them below or give us a call at 858-488-3597. #waterandsportspt #pt #physicaltherapy #aquatictherapy #sdathletes #sdfit #sdfitness #physicaltherapist #pttransforms #sandiego #missionbeach #carmelvalley #utc #lajolla #coronado #downtown #scrippsranch #poway #functionfriday https://www.instagram.com/p/CFBRF8Cgzy_/?igshid=cdnyy77vnejh

Welcome again to Water Drop Wednesdays! Today's post is how aquatic therapy can help decrease your low back pain. The water is a great tool to help make your rehab more pain-free. The water makes your core muscles work more efficiently to support your back while keeping your spine supported. The water has many unique properties to help you: Buoyancy helps take some of gravity's stress off your spine and allows you to focus on your exercises. Water is more resistant than air, so a simple exercise that is easy to perform on land will be much more effective when performed in the water. The water is warm, comfortable, and buoyant, which means less pain and discomfort on our spine. The water is a safe place to workout. Sometimes chronic low back pain or surgeries can affect our balance on land, but water takes away the fear of losing our balance and falling. Gentle walking or exercising in the water eliminates the risk of falling, can help strengthen your core and back muscles, and can lead to an increased level of confidence on land. If you're dealing with chronic low back pain or post-surgical issues, call us about developing an Aquatic Based Therapy program based on your individual needs and goals. Happy Mobility Monday! Did you know that lower back pain affects nearly 70% of America’s population every year? This pain can be caused by pinched nerves that exit your spinal cord and innervate the muscles of your back, gluts and legs. Today on Mobility Monday, we’ll show you a great exercise to alleviate your lower back pain and decrease the pressure on those pinched nerve roots. #waterandsportspt #pt #physicaltherapy #aquatictherapy #sdathletes #sdfit #sdfitness #physicaltherapist #pttransforms #sandiego #missionbeach #carmelvalley #utc #lajolla #coronado #downtown #scrippsranch #poway #mobilitymonday https://www.instagram.com/p/CC3wzuAgVcs/?igshid=lx3rq4qd3i2i

Today’s Functional Friday movement is the TWIST! A twist is a common movement pattern frequently used throughout the day to lift and carry objects and complete daily chores such as putting away dishes or doing the laundry. Welcome to Water Drop Wednesdays! Today’s tips and tidbits are all about how aquatic therapy can help with your ankle pain. The pool provides you with a safe and comfortable environment to rehabilitate your ankle. Many times after injuring your ankle, it can be painful to stand and walk. Sometimes, physicians will prescribe you with a brace or boot to wear along with an assistive device to limit your weight bearing. However, aquatic therapy can help you rehabilitate your ankle even with these restrictions! A recent study showed that people with ankle sprains who received aquatic therapy had decreased re-injury to their ankles. Research also shows that aquatic therapy can help treat unstable ankles by focusing on balance exercises in the water. If you have an ankle injury, aquatic therapy with a physical therapist can include: Balance exercises in the water to help you stand on one leg and feel confident in your balance Strengthening exercises for your legs Exercises to help decrease your swelling and increase your range of motion Gait training to work on walking in the water Cardio exercises to get your heart rate up while you rehabilitate Comment below with any questions or contact us at 858-488-3597.
