You know that iconic shark mouth aircraft nose art we all love? It was originated by the Flying Tigers, a volunteer group of US Navy, Marines, and Army Air Corps P-40 Warhawk pilots who joined the Chinese Air Force to help defend China against Japanese Forces advancing in the Pacific during WWII. This partnership began in April 1941, before the US declared war on Germany and Japan. Following months of training, they flew their first combat mission 12 days after Pearl Harbor was hit. The Flying Tigers demonstrated remarkable tactical victories at a time when the mood in the US was low, with little hope that Japan could be defeated. The success of the American/Chinese alliance led to a boost in morale for both countries and the combat records of the Flying Tigers still exist today.
