CARLITO'S WAY (1993): Brian De Palma and Al Pacino reunited for this relatively restrained but overlong crime drama (adapted from two 1970s novels by Edwin Torres) about a savvy Puerto Rican gangster, newly released after five years in the joint, who just wants to run his more or less legit club and bank enough money to movie to the Bahamas with his dancer girlfriend (Penelope Ann Miller), only to be drawn back into the shit by his sleazy lawyer (Sean Penn), whose coke habit and bad judgment will eventually be their undoing.

Much less cartoonish than SCARFACE — or for that matter Pacino's over-the-top performance in HEAT two years later — but also less memorable and less compelling, and an uncharitable viewer might find the story's reliance on "for want of a nail" ironies a little trite. Penn's performance is less great than some critics have insisted, Luis Guzmán is stuck in basically the same "treacherous second banana" role he's played over and over again, and Miller seems out of place. A young Viggo Mortensen pops up briefly as Carlito's paraplegic former cellmate; he's terrible. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Nah. VERDICT: Competent and occasionally stylish, but pretty ho-hum unless you're a gangster movie connoisseur.

California's Snow Pack -- January 1st

California’s wet season is off to a relatively slow start, despite El Niño conditions that often mean a rainy winter. Overall, there’s been about a third less precipitation across the state so far than the average for this time of year, according to rainfall totals through the end of December.

More worrisome is the state’s snowpack, which state officials said on January 2nd is just 25 percent of what it typically is at the turn of the new year. The unusually warm weather in December meant that precipitation was more likely to fall as rain than as snow, experts say.

That 25 percent figure is the lowest for California in a decade, and a huge change from a year ago. By January 2 last year, a series of atmospheric rivers — storm systems named for their long, narrow shape and the prodigious amount of water they carry — had built the snowpack up to almost twice the 30-year average.

“The dry fall and below-average conditions today shows how fast water conditions can change,” Sean de Guzman of California’s Department of Water Resources said in a statement.

Looks pretty bleak doesn't it!

The implications for PCT hikers is significant unless there is change in snowpack in California.

A Boom Year for Sierra Nevada Snow Thi study compares the 2022 and 2023 snowpack in the Sierra Nevada. After three years of busts, 2023 was a boom year for snow in the Sierra Nevada. Precipitation from a deluge of atmospheric rivers blanketed the California mountain range with a historic amount of snow. Many parts of central California received 200 percent or more of expected precipitation this water year, which started on October 1. Eleven moderate-strength atmospheric rivers hit the southern Sierra Nevada this year, which is twice the average number. Precipitation from these storms contributed to a breach of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the re-emergence of Tulare Lake in the San Joaquin River Valley, and heaps of snow on the range. The natural-color satellite images above, acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite, show the stark difference between the snow cover in the Sierra Nevada on April 6, 2023 (centre) compared to April 1, 2022 (top). “Not only was this year wet, it was also unusually cold,” said Noah Molotch, a mountain hydrologist at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Parts of the central coast experienced the coldest winter since 1978-1979, according to the National Weather Service. “This has contributed to an anomalously high snowpack in both the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains and at lower elevations along the range.” Molotch and colleagues at INSTAAR have been using satellite data to track snowpack along the range every two weeks. Their analysis on April 1—which is typically the date of peak snowpack—confirmed that the season was a boom. “This is the greatest amount of snow water content we have seen in the Sierra Nevada since our record began in 2000,” Molotch said. The map in the lower image shows snow water equivalent (SWE)—a measurement of how much water you would get if all of the snow in a given area melted at once. The measurement was particularly high in the southern Sierras: four times (439 percent) the average for April 1, according to Molotch’s analysis. Mountains in the central part of the range were at 284 percent of normal, and slopes to the north were 271 percent of normal. The near real-time analysis of snow in the range relies on 20 years of data from the MODIS instruments on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites. NASA’s Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data on topography, among others, are also used to model mountain conditions. Using ground-based measurements, the California Department of Water Resources (CA-DWR) also found that this year’s snowpack is one of the largest. Their survey of 130 ground-based snow sensors throughout the state indicated that the snow water equivalent on April 3 was 61 inches (1.55 meters), or 237 percent of average for that day. “This year’s result will go down as one of the largest snowpack years on record in California,” said Sean de Guzman, manager of CA-DWR’s Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasting Unit, in a press release. The only other time snowpack was this high was in 1952, but the system for measuring snow was different, making it difficult to make comparisons. Snow that falls in the Sierra Nevada each winter is a natural reservoir that slowly melts and flows down into the river valleys in spring and summer. In a typical year, this snowpack accounts for about 30 percent of California’s water supply. This year, some reservoirs are so full that water managers are having to release water to make room for more snowmelt. This year’s exceptionally high snowpack was preceded by three years of extreme drought in the western U.S. Data provided by Molotch and INSTAAR colleagues Leanne Lestak and Kehan Yang provide a detailed picture of snowpack across the range and at different elevations, which helps CA-DWR and other water managers better forecast snowmelt. Funding for the product was originally provided by NASA’s applied sciences program, and it is now supported by CA-DWR. Sierra Snowpack -- February

The LA Times recently posted this story about the Sierra snowpack.

Drought-weary California is entering February with deeper snowpack than it has seen in four decades, reflecting a healthy boost in the state’s supply of water but also spurring concerns about dryness, flooding and other potential hazards in the months ahead.

Statewide Sierra snowpack was 205% of normal for the date on Wednesday (February 1), said officials with the Department of Water Resources during the second snow survey of the season.

Even more promising, snowpack was 128% of its April 1 average, referring to the end-of-season date when snowpack in California is typically at its deepest.

“Our snowpack is off to an incredible start, and it’s exactly what California needs to really help break from our ongoing drought,” DWR snow survey manager Sean de Guzman said. The state’s snowpack is currently outpacing the winter of 1982-83 — “the wettest year on record dating back about 40 years,” he said

Snow levels at Phillips Station near South Lake Tahoe, where the monthly surveys are conducted each winter, were 193% of average for the date.

We cannot reinforce enough the implications for thru-hikers who have been starting earlier and earlier in the year. The snow levels and the water runoff through the High Sierra promises to be epic . . . and potentially life-threatening especially for the underprepared (undertrained and underequipped). Enjoy the potential Super Bloom in the desert and arrive in the Sierra much later than you may have planned.
