Séance in the Asylum #1 by Clay McLeod Chapman and Andrea Mutti. Cover by Mutti. Variant cover by Trevor Henderson. Out in July.
"1865. Defrauded spiritual medium Alicia Wilkinson is brought to The Ashcroft Hospital at the behest of Dr. John James Templeton. He offers Alicia a second chance to revive her once-thriving career: perform a séance amongst the patients in order to drawing out their mental maladies. Alicia performs her first series of séances with the patients - including traumatized soldiers returning from the Civil War, women whose sanity has slipped through their fingers - only to realize their sessions might work all too well. What no one knows is Alicia is a fake. A liar. A cheat... So why are the patients suddenly acting possessed?"

Vulture!Wednesday AU - Part 2
It soon became apparent Wednesday had miscalculated her chances in Jericho City, or just Jericho as the locals called it.
The incident which had it expelled had occurred near the end of the school year. She had made her preparations for her upcoming transfer and then performed the tracking spell Grandmama taught her. By the time she had launched the spell most Outcasts had left the city for vacation. With them back for the school year, their energies masked and confounded the tracking spell.  Like searching for a grain of sand in the desert.
At least she didn't have a problem finding an abode. Her new residence for the next four years was an abandoned State Hospital. A more Normie way of saying 'Lunatic Asylum'.
"Oh, my little storm cloud, you'll love it." Her father assured her on the ride to the property. Gomez, his wife Morticia and Wednesday were sitting on the back of their modified Pontiac 1938 Silver Streak. It was naturally painted black and with an engine far too powerful for it. Lurch drove the car with Pugsley sitting shotgun. "t is located on the edge of the city, at a cliff by the sea. No Normie will approach you by mistake, your privacy is secured."
"Indeed, you've done a fantastic job, Mon Amour." Her mother agreed, looking at her husband with pride. She turned to Wednesday. "While I applaud your incentive, my dear, don't forget to attend the school. Back in the day, before Jericho became what it is today, your father and I attended Nevermore Academy. It's where we met and fell in love."
"I assure you, Mother, my alibi shall mock the very concept of guilt." Wednesday replied. "Although my focus will be to 'officially' get a diploma. I have no interest in love or other useless distractions."
"I promise you, my little viper, you'll love Nevermore." Gomez assured her.
"Yes, it'll be the perfect school for you." Morticia added.
"Why, because it was perfect for you?" Wednesday replied, her usual ice cold tone rose an octave. "I've been clear before on my choices and they don't include following your footsteps. There are no fencers who can rival me, nor Dark Prom that could tempt me - it offends me you could ever think I'd appreciate such a thing. And as far as the Seance's Society or-"
"I merely meant you'll finally be among peers who'd understand you." Morticia interrupted her, nonchalant. "Maybe you'll even make some friends."
"To be a friend I'd have to find one I could consider my equal. I doubt there's one teenager in the entire city who's not a slave of their hormones."
"You might be surprised." Gomez replied. "Nevermore isn't like any other school you've ever seen. It's a magical place. It's where I met your mother." He turned to Morticia with an adoring gaze. "And we fell in love."
Gomez and Morticia leaned in for a passionate kiss when Wednesday spoke up.
"You two are making me nauseous." She said, raising her voice. "Not in a good way."
"Darling, we aren't the ones who got you expelled." Her mother reminded her. "That boy's family was going to file 'Attempted Murder' charges. How would that have looked on your record?"
"Terrible." Wednesday conceded. "Everyone would've known I failed to get the job done."
"Ah, here we are!" Gomez said, excited to change the subject.
The car stopped at a gated door chained shut. The family stepped outside the vehicle and took in the view in front of them. A somber monument to a bygone era.
Its weathered facade, fashioned from aging brick and crumbling mortar, evokes a sense of both grandeur and desolation. Towering spires pierce the darkened sky, their jagged edges reaching upward like skeletal fingers grasping for salvation. Gargoyles, frozen in eternal anguish, leer from their perches, their stony gazes silently whispering tales of sorrow and despair.
The Addams unchained the entrance door. The air hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and decay, mingling with the faint echoes of tormented whispers that reverberated through the stillness. The dim glow of lamp light flickered along the cobblestone paths, casting elongated shadows that seem to beckon and warn in equal measure. Broken windows stare out into the night like vacant eyes, their broken frames reflecting the fractured souls that once sought solace within these walls. Within the depths of the hospital, dimly lit corridors stretch like labyrinthine passageways, leading to forgotten wards where the ghosts of the past continue their mournful existence. Faded wallpaper peels from the walls, revealing glimpses of forgotten patterns and lost memories. The floorboards creak underfoot, their mournful groans echoing through the emptiness, while dusty chandeliers, once resplendent, hang precariously, casting dancing shadows upon the desolate halls.
The family stared at the inside in silence, awaiting Wednesday's verdict.
"Perfect." She finally said.
"Yes but there's one slight issue." Gomez said, raising a finger. "I was unable to get the entrance for your suit like you needed it. It'd have brought too much attention if we had the workers open a hole on the side of the cliff."
"Then how do you propose we make one?" Wednesday replied.
The family turned towards Pugsley, who stood silent holding a bag and smiling. After midnight, where no one is there to witness, a small explosion makes a hole on the side of the cliff. It connects to the hospital's basement by a small passageway the family dug during the afternoon. During the next few weeks, Lurch will deliver the pieces necessary to set up the hangar.
But that's for the future. Right now the family makes a simple celebration and turns in for the night.
Tomorrow is Wednesday's first day and, despite what she promised, they wanted to make sure Wednesday gets there in time.
The next day, after hearing the principal give her opening speech, Wednesday is summoned to her office.
"Wednesday, certainly a unique name." Principal Weems says with a smile. They're sitting behind her desk. "I guess it is for the week of the day you were born?"
The woman is remarkably tall (6'3" Wednesday figures) and beautiful. Her blonde hair is almost white and styled to perfection and it matches her dress and coat. That and her bright blue eyes and red lipstick clashed with her pale skin. Everything in her person screams 'professional' and 'authority.'
"No, I was born on a Friday the thirteenth. The name comes from my mother's favorite poem." Wednesday replies, annoyed at having to give the same explanation to anyone who first hears her name.
"I see. I don't suppose she mentioned we were roommates back in the day?" Weems asks.
"It didn't come up." Wednesday replies, annoyed at the pointless chatter. "Why am I here? I have yet to do anything."
"It's not about the present Wednesday but your past." Weems replies as she takes a file from her desk, opens it and begins to read from it. "You certainly had an interesting academic journey. Eight schools in five years. Even for an institution such as ours, Nevermore doesn't allow students with such... reputation. You've requested a special uniform, given the fact this has to do with your medical condition, we allowed it. As a legacy student you are allowed a room in our campus yet you decided to reside outside the city. Given your past history, your family's history, it brings unease. You're here to be reminded of the delicate situation you're in. This was a favor, one other members of the faculty objected to."
Ah, Wednesday almost nods. It's a power display. As expected.
"I assure you, you have nothing to fear from me." Wednesday says with a smile that almost seems to belong to her. "I plan to dedicate myself to my studies during my stay at this institution."
"I'm glad to hear that." Weems replies with a false delight. "Although I must warn you that this school has a mandatory club program. You will have to interact with other students."
"My mother informed me of this." Wednesday replies. "I'm happy to inform you that I've already decided on which club I wish to be part of."
"Oh, really?" Weems' eyes widen ever so slightly. "And what club would it be? The Seance Society, perhaps? Or perhaps the fencing team?"
Wednesday has to fight the urge to scoff at her. Instead her smile widens an inch.
"I was thinking of joining the school's newspaper." She declares with a false sense of pride.
Weems looks at her amused for a few moments, before composing herself.
"Well, I can't say this is what I imagined, but I'm glad you've chosen to step outside your comfort zone. Although there's one problem." Weems noted.
"Which is?" Wednesday asks, for the first time unsure.
"Nevermore no longer has a newspaper team." Weems replies. "With the expansion and the new influx of students we were able to expand the operations as well as our facilities. We now have a small radio club."
Wednesday is frozen in her place. This was news to her.
"Then I guess it's clear what I must do." She replies swiftly.
"And that is?..." Weems leaves the question hanging.
"To adapt to the occasion." Wednesday replies as if it was obvious. "I shall join the radio club."

Right. Found footage is, as we all know, a pretty polarizing style of horror movie. And, even though I adore it, I see why. Pervasive issues of shakycam, bad quality being used to hide sfx issues, audio problems, bad acting due to the affordability of making a found footage movie, and more can really wreck a movie. I’ve seen plenty of found footage that I just plain hated.
When found footage is done well, though, it’s very good. I’d like to offer five of my favorite found footage movies. These don’t just rely on a single, badly-used handheld camera: they get creative with the technology at hand to draw you in and help you to believe you’re watching something real.
Top Five
The Bay (2012): Mutant isopods from a polluted bay come to exact environmental revenge on a small American town.
The sheer VARIETY of kinds of footage (home video, news tapes, security cameras from a huge number of angles, police dashcam footage) makes this stand out. It’s not just one single tape telling a story of a few people--it’s a compilation of tapes that provide a wide view of a disaster befalling a whole town. YMMV on whether or not that was a good idea (I think it was), but the segment of police dashcam footage is one of the single most unsettling things I’ve ever seen.
The Tunnel: A news crew investigates a possible conspiracy involving disappearances in the sewers under Sydney, Australia, and get more than they bargained for.
The guy playing the news cameraman (Steve Davis) is actually a professional camera operator for documentaries as his day job, so the camera work is actually very exceptional and deliberate instead of handheld shakycam. It avoids a lot of the common pitfalls like disorientation or focusing on the wrong thing, and I didn’t feel like I was going to get motion sick watching it.
Host (2020): During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of friends tries to hold a seance over Zoom. It doesn’t go well.
Maximizes the fear factor of all of Zoom’s constraints, from face recognition to custom backgrounds to the number of participants in the call. It also has to pack a lot into a limited time, since the length of the movie is the length of a free Zoom call, and it does so very, very well.
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum: A group of amateur Korean ghost hunters decide to livestream a lock-in at the titular asylum. This also doesn’t go well.
There’s a really novel use of techniques like GoPro cameras to bring you up close and personal with the ghosts. I almost had to take off my headphones during one scene. It also adds the unique conceit that everything is being livestreamed, which creates a layer of complication for the characters as they try to navigate the terrifying night.
V/H/S 94, “The Subject”: An Indonesian scientist building cyborgs out of unwilling participants discovers what happens when his own creations finally turn on him.
The reveal of exactly how the movie is being filmed is extraordinary. It does a great job at presenting a point of view that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before, and it’s so beautifully well-handled in terms of sound design to foreshadow what’s coming. The horror is also absolutely gut-wrenching and I’m not sure I’ve ever cheered a final girl as loudly as I cheered Subject 99.
A few other movies under the cut!
Honorable Mentions
Cloverfield: A giant monster attacks New York City and a group of friends tries to survive the night.
Although it suffers badly from shakycam and poor audio, and makes the head of the Statue of Liberty bizarrely large, the movie uses the constraints of a home video camera to give us a terrifying look at what it’s like on the ground for civilians during a kaiju attack. That’s something most modern giant monster movies neglect to give, since we see it from the perspective of scientists, soldiers, and heroes--not the innocent, hapless citizens caught in the crossfire.
Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (1998): A family Thanksgiving in rural Montana is interrupted by the arrival of Little Grey Men.
The movie effectively manipulates the constraints of a handheld camera’s limited view (keeping the viewer wondering what’s happening behind the character with a camera), which is quite nice. More importantly, though, it pulled a full “War of the Worlds” by presenting itself as a factual documentary (with no disclaimers), resulting in a fair amount of public concern, speculation, and paranoia. This was a year before Blair Witch Project came out with its early-Internet ARG stylings, so that’s even cooler to me.
For other takes on found footage I love, even though they didn’t feel terribly groundbreaking, see:
Grave Encounters: A ghost hunt goes terribly wrong during an overnight lock-in. Anything else would spoil the story.
Troll Hunter (2010): A small group of students follows around a professional troll hunter in Norway to learn about his work and the mythical trolls he hunts.
V/H/S, “Amateur Night”: Three friends attempt to pick up girls at a bar. Filmed with a camera hidden in a pair of glasses, we get a front-row seat to what happens when one of the girls turns out to be more than meets the eye.
V/H/S, “Tuesday the 17th”: Out in the woods, a bizarre entity that appears only as camera glitches hunts and kills a group of friends one by one.
[REC]: Zombies attack inside a Spanish apartment building--and when the doors are locked, the residents are left to fend for themselves to survive.
Noroi: The Curse: This “documentary” tells the story of a paranormal researcher who attempts to uncover the secrets of the supernatural in Japan, only to find himself caught up in the very curse he investigates.
