Sensing Spaces at Royal Academy

Yvonne Farrel en Shelley McNamara van het Ierse Grafton Architects hebben het gevoel van zon- en maanlicht nagebootst door middel van de Sensing Spaces installatie in de Royal Academy. 

Ze hebben dit bereikt door grote houten constructies op te hangen aan het plafond van twee gallerijen. Door de dikte en grootte lijkt dit hout heel zwaar. Dit is een goed alternatief voor beton.

In het filmpje leggen ze uit hoe ze op dit idee gekomen zijn. Ze wilden de transitie laten zien van licht naar donker, omdat mensen dat interessant vinden. Het onderwerp “Sensing Spaces” is niet door hen bedacht.

The first session of our Womxn Walk the Walk workshops departed from the Acts of Listening Lab at Concordia University. We started with a discussion about what an inclusive urban space means for womxn, and a what feminist city would look/feel like.

Seven architects working together, have transformed the Royal Academy beyond recognition. The big aim of Sensing Spaces is to change the wat the city thinks about and engages with architecture. It includes space-changing installations that shifts shape as visitors interact with it.
