Revised IPO (5)
WHITI O REHUA - SCHOOL OF ART
Independent Project Outline
213.441 Art Studio Research
Student Name: Lily Joyce
Student ID: 16285471
Amendment #: 5
Amendment date: 30/07/2020
Tutorial Group Lecturers: Jenny Gilham, Martin Patrick
1. Focus: (50-100 words):
In one or two sentences describe your research question.
How can I use site and ongoing collaboration with Maria to acknowledge empathy within the context of my performance-art-based-practice. Furthermore, how can I continue to use this cathartic work to heal myself introspectively, and by positive consequence, others around me. {To be further refined but where I’m at at the moment}.
broad to make it be answerable in multitudes.
2. Background: (200-300 words):
Briefly describe the work you resolved of last year. Don't assume we know: indicate major
themes, media and installation or exhibition highlights. What worked, what didn't, and what
you plan to carry over into this year’s work.
Last year, particularly last semester, I saw great shifts in realising my art practice.
Struggles throughout the year came to surface within my art, and the two influenced and
helped each other. ‘Recovery Piece’ was a cathartic piece for me in the making. Personal
catharsis lay in the process of making, which I intended to make evident in the finished
product. While sitting with the piece (as it was intended to be sat in front of), it was my
hope that you would be able to feel this within ‘Recovery Piece’ and this would rub off on
the one experiencing the work, and act as catharsis for them, too.
‘Fade to Breath’ was the second work in semester two that felt greatly important to my
practice. It talked about themes of platonic intimacy within friendships, and reaching out,
while bringing in ritual and mediation practices. It also shaped my wishes for collaboration.
This felt like honing in on a part of healing that is particularly important to me at the
moment, and where I’d like to continue to take my art.
I am now working toward a final project that will be in collaboration with Maria. I intend to honour my past works by rifting them off of them, but begin to bring in elements of site and further response to the ongoing collaborations with Maria. This work will be the final work shown from our time at art school and will pay homage to our time at Massey and the spaces that have served us in Poneke, and also to the friendship built through a love of cathartic art and healing through such.
At this point I am setting up small performance works to get back to the feeling of performing and being able to be in the same space! And figuring out ways of including my writing process into these works.
3. References:
Begin to create a list of a minimum of 12 references, four of which must be texts and four
artists or artworks. The remaining four could be more text or artworks, or could be other
kinds of artefacts: films, music, fictional writing, etc. This should be selected from
development in 213.463 Research Seminar. Use the Massey OWLL referencing guidelines
where possible.
1. Shannon Te Ao ‒ Massey Lecturer and Artist.
For many reasons, themes in his work, aesthetic decisions, similarity in mediums. Huge
influence to my art practice.
2. Aldous Harding - Singer/ songwriter
Interesting ideas and ways of looking at the world, her mind ! Aesthetically interesting music
videos and themes within her songs/ music videos.
3. Jackson Pollock - https://www.artspace.com/magazine/news_events/art-bytes/art-bytes-pollock-namuth-film-53056
The iconic work of Jackson Pollock of course is kinda old now… literally but also just like *yawn*. Not gonna lie tho it kinda has shaped me and I suppose mine and Maria’s work kinda responds/ rejects it with a collaborative and feminist agenda.
4. Mata Aho Collective - Artists
A collective of Maori wahine making works responding to their indigeneity and roots. As a
collaboration artist model.
5. Giuseppe Penone - Artist
For his work Propagazioni (Propagations, 1995). The circle like drawings that Maria and I have
been remaking in our own context. (Ugh can i remove this now haha).
6. The Museum of Modern Love by Heather Rose - Book
A love story that centres around Marina Abramović’s performance “The Artist is Present”.
Interesting theories around things. Talked about more on my blog.
7. Abromavic / Ulay Collaboration - Artists
Their work together so obsessively. The pros and cons of their relationship as
collaboratives and at the time togetherness is interesting. Interesting comparison/ contrast/
artist model for Maria and I.
8. Maria Parker Solo work - Artist
It seems Maria and I are often making work that speaks to each other, even when we’re not
explicitly collaborating.
9. Hamster Issue 5 - Sometimes my layers clash with your layers. - written
A cross over of writing and performance. Interesting.
10. Jeanette Winterson - Writing.
A beautiful writer. Thought provoking. Fast becoming my favourite author. Inspires me to read
and write.
11. Grouper - Music.
My favourite study music. Grouper’s ambient music is always what I put on when I’m stressed
but also brings me to a place energetically. It is a catalyst for my creativity but even more than
that.. specially the creativity that is required for this project.
12. Bryce Galloway - lecturer and Artist.
Good ol’ Bryce ay. Bryce’s performance ‘Untitled (Hair Transposition)’ is a good example of
keeping performance earnest. As ridiculous as it is he still continues a serious face. This is a
helpful example for when I need to perform seemingly ridiculous tasks in performance
(Practicing Kindness).
13. Motion, Emotion and Empathy in Esthetic Performance - Scholarly article.
14. Sylvia Plath - in particular, her poem ‘Mirror’ but also I need to read more by her!
4. Process:
What do you intend to make (i.e., painting, sculpture, video, etc.), and how (materials and
processes). What knowledge and skills do you need to gain, investigations to undertake,
and at what point will you critically reflect on your progress. Produce a timeline of the
above that extends to the end of the year submission.
• Writing ‒ I have been reading a lot because I feel like reading sets off the
chain reaction to writing. It inspires me to write. I’ve mostly been reading poetry which
makes me therefore think in a poetic like format which honestly sounds so pretentious,
and like I think everything that comes out of my head is poetic (believe me it’s not) but it
gets the ball rolling. So yeah. Essentially, read books. Read poetry. Study poets/ writers/
etc. Write according to the inspiration.
Leading toward collaboration with Maria and Emily - performances and exploring sites.
• Collaboration with Maria (Artist) and Emily (Furniture designer/ builder).
New Art. Maria and I have begun to discuss a new collaborative art piece. The idea is
essentially expanded drawing, done together. At the moment this means drawing on an
easel on separate sides. In my workbook is a more direct example of what I mean here.
Mata Aho - collaborators. Maria Parkers Work - seperate to our collaborative work.
5. Resources:
Do you need a studio space, and/or access to any particular equipment? What kinds of
materials do you think you will be using: identify any health and safety issues (and how you
intend to deal with these issues), and where and how you will get these. This will probably
take the form of an annotated list.
• Studio space for writing, workbook, research.
• Access to collaboration with Maria
• Tim’s workshop - frame building.
• Projector
• Camera, tripod
• Art supplies for expanded drawing
• Library
• Help from Mike
• 1 on 1’s
• etc.

Personal Account Versus Fanpage
Yup, nice huh? Pano?
- May mga brands or companies (example ay artshop, brand ng art materials at iba pang companies na connected sa art), pag nakita nilang meron kang a thousand followers, they will pay you to be an endorser for their brand.
- Youtube. Video content will be bigger in 2020. On Youtube alone, pag meron kang thousand followers, you can monetize you page. Meaning Youtube will pay you just like a monthly salary. What videos can you post? Pwedeng pwede dyan ang mga instructional or demo videos. Pwede din naman ay your daily life as an artist and the progress of your work. Pwede din naman, you interviewing other artists or you covering an art event. I’m sure you can come up with a clever idea because you are a creative person.
Personal account versus fanpage and why you should prefer having a fanpage
You also can use a video as banner at malaking advantage yun.
I schedule my posts at the beggining of the day. I divide it by morning, lunchtime and evening so kahit na busy ako sa work, doing my craft or malayo ako sa computer ko ay si Facebook na ang bahala mag post ng latest updates. So consider exploring this feature.
Again, consider exploring this feature.
4. Marami pang ibang feature ang fanpage na hindi ino-offer sa personal account like image carousel or making videos from images so talagang mas may advantage ang fanpage.
Last tip, personal account man o fanpage ang gamit mo ay do not mix your personal life with your brand. Unless you are showing you artist life like showing the progress of your work while balancing your life as a new mom. I mean, yung nag ta-tap ka sa mga mothers na nakaka relate sayo and you will gain followers from from different type of audience then it is totally OK. For short basta anything positive ok lang.
So yun, good luck and may you have a more productive 2020 ahead.
