How Tennessee got its name
Tumblr media
Tennessee is a long fairly narrow state. Obeying the speed limit, two hours travel, about 120 miles, will get you from top to bottom and 6 hours from Memphis to Pigeon Forge in the Smoky Mountains National Park. That's about 450 or so miles to the North Carolina border. Eight states border us, Kentucky and Virginia to the north, North Carolina to the east, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia in the south, Arkansas and Missouri along the Mississippi River in the west.
There are 95 counties in total, but this is about one in particular, Monroe. In olden days Monroe was part of the homeland of the Overhill Cherokee. It's also the birthplace of Sequoyah, inventor of the Cherokee alphabet. This scholar created the alphabet using Latin and Cyrillic letters, the result being the rates of literacy among Cherokees rose significantly, helping preserve their language and culture. Born in 1770 this was quite an accomplishment considering that Native tribes and White settlers of the time were most likely not well educated and usually separated, either by choice or location.
Having been brought up in Memphis I knew very little about the Cherokee, our location was mostly Chickasaw and Shawnee, it's been a treat to dive into the rabbit hole of research on a most interesting man. Sequoyah had many different jobs in his lifetime, one was as a as a representative of the Cherokee Nation in Washington D.C. Sequoia trees are named after him, just a different spelling. If you're ever passing by, consider stopping at the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, it's on Tennessee Route 360. It's now on my list of places in my state I'd like to visit.
And now to our state name. One of the Cherokee capitals was named Tanasi which later became the English spelling of Tennessee.
Tumblr media
I've pulled information from many sources, so I only take credit for pulling it all together.
BTW, Monroe County is also home of America's largest underwater lake, called the Lost Sea. There are tours and a boat ride.

Limited advance reservations: www.lincolncenter.org/series/summer-for-the-city/celebrating-greg-tate-more-than-posthuman-rise-of-the-burnt-sugar-arkestra-mojosexual-cotillion **This celebration honoring Greg's life and legacy will be live-streamed for folks who are unable to attend - go to Lincolncenter.org ** Reposted from @lincolncenter: Gregory Stephen Ionman Tate (1957-2021) was a giant of Black radical thought and creativity, and a conductor of incandescent, community-driven music. Tate's body of writing as an influential critic would be enough to enshrine him as a cultural icon, but he is equally important to a generation of musicians as both the co-founder of the @blackrockcoalition, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the complete creative freedom of Black artists; and the creator of @burntsugararkestra, a sprawling, omnivorous, and outrageously accomplished improv collective. Reposted from @burntsugararkestra - For this homecoming concert, curated & presented with The Tate Family at one of his favorite venues, more than thirty Burnt Sugar Arkestra members will perform in celebration and tribute to one of the most essential voices in the history of 21st Century Avant Groidd music and thought. On the same day, The Tate Family, Lincoln Center, and Photoville will honor Tate's life and work with the presentation, “In Praise of Shadow Boxers, Dissonance & Dissidents: A Pop-Up Tribute Exhibition to Greg Tate”. The exhibition will feature six-foot prints by 24 artists with whom Tate was in community and whose work he championed. Each image is accompanied by a personal statement by that artist about Tate. Just a little Vampire Academy fancast
Gizem Emre as Rose
Sarah Grey as Lissa
Staz Nair as Dimitri
Blake Michael as Christian
Lana Condor as Mia
Johnny Sequoyah as Jill
Jake Austin Walker as Mason
Niko Guardado as Eddie
Aurora Perrineau as Adrian
Giorgia Whigham as Sydney
First and foremost, make it so St. Vlad’s is a college. Rose and Lissa struck out at 18, and it shouldn’t be possible to drag back in these legal adults who are 20, but Moroi and Dhamphir society are that insular. Dimitri is still 24 or 25 and has a position of power, but at least Rose is legal. And, he’s been sent there not only to be Lissa’s future guardian, but because he’s traumatized by what happened to Ivan (let them have been lovers) and it’s kind of remedial graduate school for him.
Gizem Emre is a German Turkish actress who’s supposed to be fluent in English. The major point is Rose does need to be a WOC, preferably with Turkish heritage (but if that’s too tough, then Iranian or Syrian or maybe Bulgarian); I also looked at Özgü Kaya from Turkey and Medalion Rahimi (who’s Persian American)
I went with Staz Nair for Dimitri- his mother’s Russian; I realize that’s not ideal (and he’s also “only” 6′1) but the guy is fit and I love him on Supergirl; he can also rock the longer hair; I also considered Shayan Sobhian from Legends of Tomorrow
yeah, I genderbent Adrian, which means Rose, Adrian, and Sydney would all be Sapphic (I’m thinking Adrian and Rose are bi, Sydney is lesbian and hey consider the implications with her religious background); I’ll be honest, Adrian in BL bores me (I enjoyed him more in the VA novels) and I hate that I have so little interest in Sydney’s main romance; Aurora (or a woman in general) in the role would make it a bit more dynamic
I didn’t do Natalie (or Viktor) or any of the school staff- sorry
I’ve also got Cameron Cuffe as Andre (let him survive the car accident and he actually knows about Jill’s parentage (so bring her in earlier), and about the Mana, and oh, hey, we get Mia’s story more fully)- also, I want him to be bffs with Adrian for another friendship dynamic; and Charlie Rowe as Jesse

A Georgia man who professed a passion for guns and God was in custody on Tuesday night after a string of shootings that police said appeared to target Asian women at massage parlors and left eight people dead.
Robert Aaron Long, 21, of Woodstock, Georgia, was caught on video at the crime scenes and later nabbed on a highway two hours south of Atlanta following a police chase, authorities said.
Police stressed that it was too early to announce a motive—but at least four of those killed were of Korean descent, and the horrific attacks come amid a wave of targeted violence against the Asian-American community.
A trickle of details about the suspect, who went by his middle name, offered few clues.
“Pizza, guns, drums, music, family, and God. This pretty much sums up my life. It’s a pretty good life,” read the tagline on an Instagram account that appeared to belong to Long.
A student who graduated from Sequoyah High with Long in 2017 who spoke on the condition of anonymity told The Daily Beast, “He was very innocent seeming and wouldn’t even cuss. He was sorta nerdy and didn’t seem violent from what I remember. He was a hunter and his father was a youth minister or pastor. He was big into religion.”
The rampage began at Young’s Asian Massage in Acworth in Cherokee County, where two people were killed, one other person succumbed to their injuries en route to a nearby hospital, and one died while in treatment, according to the sheriff’s office. The victims were two Asian women, a white woman, and a white man, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A Hispanic man was also injured in the shooting and was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment, a spokesman for the sheriff said.
About an hour later and 30 miles away, two spas on the same Atlanta street—Gold Spa and one in Aroma Therapy Spa—were targeted by gunfire, and four Asian women were killed.
Officers had just arrived at one of the spas to find the victims when they were summoned to the second.
“While at [the first location] we received another call across the street of shots fired, and responded to find another individual shot at that location,” Atlanta Police Chief Rodney N. Bryant told reporters.
While no details about the Acworth victims were given, Bryant said that “it appears that all the [Atlanta] victims are female” and “it appears that they may be Asian.”
Shootings at two massage parlors in Atlanta and one in the suburbs have left multiple people dead, many of them women of Asian descent, authorities said Tuesday.
Two men who live just across from Gold Massage Spa who refused to give their names said their neighbors started asking them about the incident around 6:15 p.m. They said the area was very diverse, but that the spa was known to be an Asian-owned business.
“This is the worst shooting since ‘99 I think,” one of the men told The Daily Beast. “There was a shooting then where a guy went through his office and killed a bunch of people and he killed his family. That was 12 people I think, so this is the worst one since I’ve been here.”
Bryant has declined to say whether police believe the shootings in Georgia Tuesday amounted to a hate crime, saying, “We can’t make that determination just yet.”
Cherokee County Sheriff ’s Capt. Jay Baker told reporters: “Nothing is going to be ruled out. Wherever the investigation leads us, that’s where we are going to go.” Atlanta police said video surveillance of Long’s car at all three massage parlors captured Tuesday night made it “extremely likely” he was the main suspect in all three shootings.
Baker said that Long was arrested by Crisp County Sheriff’s officers who performed a PIT maneuver, or a pursuit intervention technique, in which police force another car to plow sideways and stop.
Long’s family did not respond to calls for comment. His youth pastor at the Crabapple First Baptist Church confirmed he was the suspect and said elders would be releasing a statement.
A 2018 video on the Crabapple Facebook page features Long discussing his Christian journey toward baptism.
“As many of you may remember, when I was 8 years old I thought I was becoming a Christian, and got baptized during that time. And I remember a lot of the reason for that is a lot of my friends in my Sunday school class were doing that,” Long says in the clip.
“And after that time, there wasn’t any fruit from the root that is our salvation.”
He goes on to say that when he was in seventh grade he attended a youth group and a speaker was discussing the biblical story of the prodigal son.
“The son goes off and squanders all that he has and lives completely for himself and then, when he finds he’s wanting to eat pig food, he realized there’s something wrong and he goes back to his father and his father runs back to him and embraces him. And by the grace of God I was able to draw the connection there and realize this is a story between what happened with me and God. I ran away living completely for myself, and he still wants me, and so that’s when I was saved.”
The FBI joined the investigation late Tuesday, and President Biden was also briefed on the massacres. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is in South Korea, mentioned the killings before a meeting with officials said.
“We are horrified by this violence which has no place in America or anywhere,” he said, according to the Associated Press.
President Joe Biden recently condemned the surge in crimes of hate, which have included a brazen, deadly assault on an 84-year-old from Thailand who was killed on a morning stroll in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus said it was “horrified” by news of the shooting “at a time when we’re already seeing a spike in anti-Asian violence.”
The legal advocacy nonprofit Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Atlanta released a statement saying the group was “shaken” by the shootings. “Now is the time to hold the victims and their families in our hearts and with light.”

Character Actor
Lane Bradford (born John Myrtland Le Varre, Jr., August 29, 1922 – June 6, 1973) Character actor, who appeared in more than 250 films and television series between 1940 and 1973, specializing in supporting "tough-guy" roles predominantly in Westerns but also in more contemporary crime dramas such as Dragnet, The Fugitive, and Hawaii Five-O.
Bradford appeared in many television series and "B" western films. He played the historical figure, Sequoyah, the namesake of Sequoia National Park, in the 1954 episode "Sequoia" of the western anthology series Death Valley Days hosted by Stanley Andrews. The segment covers Sequoyah from earliest years to his development of the Cherokee alphabet. Carol Thurston and Angie Dickinson played Sali and Ayoka, respectively. In a 1959 Death Valley Days episode, "The Blonde King," Bradford played California pioneer Jim Savage, a friend of the Indians who works to stop a threat to the peace of the Yosemite Valley.
In the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s, Bradford guest-starred on nearly all of the Western series broadcast on American television during that period.  He was cast on the ABC/Warner Brothers series, Colt .45 as Pete Jesup in the 1959 episode "The Devil's Godson". He also appeared on Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger (fifteen times), Buffalo Bill, Jr. (six times), Laredo (five times), The Cisco Kid, Tales of the Texas Rangers (twice), Jefferson Drum, Johnny Ringo, Maverick, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin (five times), Lassie (TV series) (1965), The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp (six times), Cheyenne (seven times), Wagon Train (eight times), The High Chaparral (twice), The Restless Gun (four times), Bonanza (fourteen times), Gunsmoke (thirteen times), The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, Storefront Lawyers,  Ripcord, and Sergeant Preston of the Yukon.
Bradford guest-starred on the religion anthology series, Crossroads. He made two appearances on CBS's Perry Mason, including the role of Detective Arnold Buck in the 1962 episode "The Case of the Absent Artist."
His last television appearance was in 1973 on an episode of the CBS private-detective series Cannon, with William Conrad.  The episode, titled "Press Pass to the Slammer", aired that year on March 13, just three months before Bradford's death.  (Wikipedia)

LIVE. LOVE. LOCAL. Must-see + Must-do Moments in Northwest Arkansas
TRY: Dining in the Dark with Chef Justus Moll at Mount Sequoyah in Fayetteville. Mount Sequoyah is up to some really cool things these days. One of them is the upcoming culinary event series led by Executive Chef Justus Moll where you will enhance the senses of taste, touch, and smell as you eat a meal with no sight. You better believe we’ll save the date and be there on Saturday, September 7, from 6:30pm - 9:00pm completely blindfolded for Dining in the Dark (above: TSG Northwest Arkansas editor, Rebekah Lawrence, and husband Nick at Chef Justus Moll’s signature Dining in the Dark.) You can reserve tickets to Dining in the Dark here.
SIP + STROLL: Spend an evening at the NOMA Art + Cocktails Stroll on Friday, June 21st from 5pm-8pm. Stroll, sip & shop at the locally-owned businesses (between North and Maple Street) all conveniently located along College Avenue in Fayetteville. Each of the following NOMA businesses will be hosting a pop-up artist/artisan and offering a complimentary libation at each of their locations: 59th and 9th, Freckled Hen Farmhouse, Greydog Vintage Boutique, Maude, Skye on the Town, Lacuna Modern, Wit & Whimsy, and Dead Swanky (all shops are walkable, offer free parking and are pet-friendly (be sure to stop by the Maude Color Wall to get a Pup Portrait made by The Scout Guide Northwest Arkansas photographer Meredith Mashburn/Mashburn Photography (your pup will look PAWsitively adorable wearing a floral collar from ZuZu’s Petals & Gifts!).
LEARN: We’ve always wanted to try our hands at pottery and The Fenix Fayetteville is providing that opportunity through Adult Clay Club (July 24th to August 14th, 2019). Experience the entire process of creating your own unique pieces of pottery through hand building, wheel throwing, and glazing. The 1st (July 24th) and 4th classes (August 14th) in the club series will be held at The Fenix Gallery and the 2nd (July 31st) and 3rd classes (August 7th) at Art Experience. All sessions are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm.
SHOP: Be sure to shop local at Hillfolk Textile Studio + Shop at 8th S. Market in Bentonville. Never ever can we walk out of Hillfolk empty handed. Sounds dangerous to the bank account, right? But here’s the thing, their shop is full of so many interesting and carefully curated things that we find ourselves picking up gifts for upcoming birthdays, shower gifts or just-because-it made-me-think-of-you gifts.  And, full transparency, we usually leave with a little treat for ourselves. Like our fave Maison Louis Marie No. 4 candle.
EXPERIENCE: Pure Barre Fayetteville is our new jam (don’t worry, tennis, you’re still my first love. xoxo -Jenn). We have to admit that the first class that TSG Northwest Arkansas associate editor, Jenn Esty, took was tough. But she FELT stronger after and decided this is a challenge she’s up for. They’ll even tell you, your muscles will shake, but it gets easier and easier every time. It’s also a great compliment for other activities (see, tennis) and, oh, my goodness, does it work! Meet us at the barre and be sure to tell them Scout sent you!!
NEED: Be a vintage vixen in the luxe Camilla High Waisted Trouser with Godet from Lola in Fayetteville. Crafted from sumptuous silk in a floaty wide-leg silhouette and featuring a fringed waist tie, contrast chiffon panels and crystal-studded embellishments for a touch of luminous shine. Add a simple black bodysuit — to die for!
TELL THEM SCOUT SENT YOU!
— Rebekah & Jenn
