Old CRT monitors shot beams of electrons at the screen, which have spots of material that light up red, blue, and green. To keep the electron beam from bleeding across each pixel, a metal grid is lined up so the beam can't reach "between" each pixel where it's not supposed to go. That grid catches the electrons.

A magnet put on the screen, or even near it, slightly magnetizes this grid. Since…
