WHAT IS IT?

With data in transit, we have to ensure there are no openings along the transfer path that the data is sent for attackers to abuse. With data that is weakly encrypted or even worse transferred in plaintext, the attacker simply needs to find a weakness in the transport system to gain access to our data. The use of protocols such as HTTP, SMTP and FTP, where the sensitive data is transmitted in plain-text is a major flaw in any web application, and should not be utilised for sending sensitive data. Whilst a concern in intranets, this is particularly an issue in external internet, which are readily available by anyone.

Often time’s sensitive data passes through or to other pages that aren’t running on secure protocols, and often times web developers forget about this, leaving a hole for the attackers to penetrate. Attackers often exploit this via eavesdropping, a form of man-in-the-middle attack whereby they listen in inconspicuously to the data stream as it passes along an insecure path. Should sensitive information be transmitted through an insecure page, even if only for a split second, it is open to a possible attack. This is particularly a concern for those protocols with weak or no encryptions.

In terms of data at rest, weak key generation for encryption and poor management lead to weak or outdated hashes being used, which in turn means the data isn’t as securely stored. Encryptions that utilise weak ciphers or default crypto keys are the main cause of this. Weak ciphers are those that are crackable in a time faster than brute forcing. As soon as this occurs, a hash loses its strength and it is considered not viable. Data at rest is also susceptible to rainbow table attacks, and as such hashes that don’t salt the information before hashing it are also at risk. Rainbow tables exploit the space-time tradeoff, and are essentially a pre-computed table for reversing hash functions.

HOW TO FIX IT?

The first and foremost important thing is to separate information into what is sensitive and needs to be secured, and what isn’t private. This can be based on either business logic or legislation. On top of that, a company should decide whether it even needs such sensitive info for its business purposes. The best way to prevent sensitive data exposure is to not store it if there be no need to. Encryption is an expensive process and as such it is unfeasible to encrypt everything in our possession.

Once we differentiate between this, we can then decide which information we must encrypt, and when to utilise appropriate protocols, such as HTTPS, to securely communicate our information between client and server. All sensitive data in transit should be secured protocols such as TLS and perfect forward secrecy (PFS) ciphers. PFS assures us that the key will not be compromised, even if the private key is compromised. Enforcing policies such as HSTS helps to greatly strengthen a systems defence. For data at rest, we similarly must ensure we encrypt all sensitive data. It is important to ensure that our encryption is current and strong. Utilising a strong hash, is important, as otherwise it is easier to hack with the use of rainbow tables. Something as simple as salting the information prior to hashing vastly increases the security of the information and makes such rainbow tables obsolete. Salting involves the process of appending a small secret to the end of a password prior to hashing, and by doing so completely nullifies any rainbow table.

Another consideration is setting file privileges or accessibility. The concept of least knowledge is applicable here, whereby things that don’t need to know about the information shouldn’t have access to it. This reduces the number of potential holes in the transit system that the attacker is able to target.

Finally, try not to store information unless necessary. Having large amounts of data collated and organised that isn’t necessary is asking for trouble. If data needs to be stored, the concept of tokenisation can be used, which involves replacing the sensitive data with non-sensitive substitutes, which aren’t exploitable as they have no extrinsic meaning or value.
