Get Out
l Seth Jarvis l Seth x platonic!friend l masterlist l *slight warning: bad potentially abusive boyfriend (not Seth)*
Tumblr media
Chloe's phone rang not once, not twice, but three times. She ignored it every time because it was probably Seth calling to get her to come out and party.
But she couldn't. Her boyfriend was over and wasn't in a good mood. And he could get a little scary at times. He didn't like Seth or really that group pf hockey players she sometimes hung out with.
"Oh my god. What the fuck does Seth want now? He's always calling you and taking you away from me."
"I don't know." Chloe very quietly replied.
"Well get rid of him." She nodded, quickly pressing the green accept button on the screen.
"Hey girl, why didn't you answer your phone?" Was the first thing out of his mouth, the guys he was with all laughed around him.
He couldn't give a proper hello, so he blurted out the first this to come to mind. He may have been a tiny bit tipsy.
"Chloe?" His smile turned upside down when all he could hear were crickets.
Her boyfriend who could have a bit of a mean, jealous, abusive streak in him at times must have been there.
"Hey Seth, now's not really a good time, I'm um a little busy." A little relief washed over him when she finally spoke up, but her tone of voice didn't give him much hope.
"Chlo who is at your house right now? Is he there?" Again there were crickets until she sniffled.
He knew this wasn't going to end well. She needed to get out of there. Now.
"I need you to answer me if you're okay. I'm on my way." The hockey player collected his things.
A few of the guys wanted to come with and help take care of their friend's boyfriend. But were advised against it. They didn't need anymore trouble.
"No no, we're all good here."
"Get out now. Run as far as you can." He instructed seconds before he heard a loud crash, and glass breaking.
Let me know what you think!

would you write #1 from the smut list with Jarvy? I need more of him on this app thanks☺️☺️
So happy I got a Seth request. He’s definitely underrated and if you like reading about him, might I interest you in the fic I have for him? I’ll link it here!
Enjoy🤍
Seth Jarvis was a tease. There was no other way to describe him at this point and he was killing you slowly and he knew it.
His accidental touches and dirty text messages over the last few hours, had finally boiled over the second he closed the car door.
This is how you and him had ended up tangled in the back of the Tiguan, windows fogged up, thankfully because you were parked in a public parking lot.
He was more touchy than normal tonight and what would have been a quick make out any other time, was turning into something else. He had your skirt pushed up around your hips and was attempting to yank down your underwear, and hold you upright at the same time. The backseat was spacious enough to make it possible but not comfortable.
“What-what are you doing?” You asked breathlessly as he slid them down your legs and undid the button on his jeans. Your chest felt tight and your breath was coming out in gasps as you reached forward and gave the hair that hung down the back of his neck a small tug.
He grinned “I’m about to give you the ride of your life.”
You felt your cheeks redden and looked around. The parking lot was not empty, not even close and there were people walking around everywhere. The others were still inside and it would be mortifying is Svech came out looking for you guys and saw something he shouldn’t, but the idea of getting caught was kind of hot. Seth sometimes forgot he was an nhl player and just did things that normal people would get in trouble for, but taking a risk like this was a big one.
“Really? right here? you know people are going to see us...”
The cheekiest smile you’d ever seen spread across his face and he moved his jeans out of the way, patting his knee.
“Jump on babe.”
The sensation of him inside never ever got old, no matter what the situation was. It was chilly and cramped in the car, and you were almost positive you had thrown your back out and had a brush burn on your right knee, but he had one hand fisted in your hair and the other hand anchored on your hip as you moved up and down his length. His lips moved across your chest tongue wet and hot against your skin and you gave a little shiver
You knew people were shooting looks at the car, and they definitely knew what was going on in there, and you were thankful for the window tint and the condensation on the glass so they couldn’t see that it was Seth Jarvis in the car and not someone random.
“Seth I think people know we’re-“ you braced a hand on the window, fingers slipping against the wet glass.
“Let them look.” He said breathlessly “Let them see how beautiful my girl is.”
You didn’t have a chance to respond because he started thrusting harder and your vision went fuzzy as you got smacked with an earth shattering orgasm. Breathing heavily you leaned forward, forehead pressed against his.
“Okay that was pretty hot.” You whispered in his ear, lips grazing his skin. His heart was beating loudly in his chest and he looked down between you, reaching for your underwear and handing them to you.
He smiled “Told you. Now let’s get out of here before someone calls the cops for indecent exposure.”
“Really? No round two in the car?”
He raised his eyebrows “Oh you wanna go again?”
“Just figured since we’re already here, and you’re into exhibitionism now apparently. No one will see us at home.”
He smiled slyly, and started the car “We can open the blinds”

the open secret | seth jarvis
Tumblr media
warnings: oral (m!receiving), allusions to free use after the fact, cockwarming pairing: seth jarvis x fem!reader summary: bestie!jarvy head as inspired by this request: "i'm a simple girl with simple wants (blurb abt giving bestie!jarvy head and he's like goofy and silly and guiding the reader's head) (OR, on the other hand, post-loss head to make him feel better cause that's stinkabutt and he deserves it for his game this post-season)". I combined the two <3 wc: 2568
Tumblr media
You weren’t ashamed of your oral fixation. It was like an open secret between your friends– you always had a pen, or some gum, or a nail in your mouth. You were constantly chewing on something and you weren’t exactly coy about how much you loved to go down on your partners.
You spoke about it often enough that your best friend Seth had taken to finding a new way to shut you up, as if you were the talker between the two of you. Over the past few months, he would trace over the line of your cheek and press his fingers onto your tongue while you were mid-word.
The first time it happened, you were stunned silent, looking up at him with doe eyes until he withdrew his hand and apologized in a sheepish voice.
“I don’t know what came over me,” he said.
“Okay,” you replied, uncertain but aching to move past the awkward moment.
The second time, you had watched him think it over. You had seen the look in his eyes change. His eyes had been fixed on your lips for nearly an eternity (it felt), and you saw him cock his head from one side to the other. He licked his lips and blinked, his gaze cloudy and far away. You watched his fingers rise up and how his thumb stroked over your chin before he slid the digit into your mouth.
The moment was so heavy. It felt like all of Seth’s weight was pressing against you with just his one finger in your mouth, pressing down on your tongue while his pointer finger rested underneath your chin. It pushed into the submental space, creating an unnaturally satisfying pressure. Almost mindlessly, your lips closed around his thumb and you sucked.
Seth snatched his hand away in an instant, his eyes wide and full of shock.
“Oh my God,” he said.
“Jarvy, it’s okay,” you replied, shaken by his reaction.
“I have to go,” he announced and booked it. He was out of your presence in a split second, and if it had been a cartoon, you could have seen the cloud of dust he had kicked up in his wake.
It hadn’t happened since, but Seth had thought about it. You knew because he continued to get that far away look in his eyes when you spoke for too long, his gaze trained on your lips. You thought once that you saw his fingers twitch at his sides and it drew your gaze, which snapped him out of his. You had watched him shake himself out of it multiple times, even when there was already something in your mouth– the straw of your coffee, most notably.
You had seen him flush a little, his cheeks red, when the two of you went on a little lunch date and you applied lip gloss right before sipping your iced drink. Then, a bit of chocolate had dripped onto your finger from your croissant and you licked it off. You were filled with a sick sense of joy when you watched Seth shift in his seat and not-so subtly look down at his lap.
You hadn’t considered Seth in that way before you noticed his fixation on your mouth– he was just your best friend, a man who you could joke around with an tease and have a good time. He was unnecessarily mean at times, although you knew by now that it was how he expressed affection. He was cuddly because he was energetic and loved to touch his friends. Now, you were thinking that maybe he was touchy with you for another reason and that he was being mean because he was flirting with you.
Your other friends agreed and slowly, over the course of the first two rounds of the playoffs, you realized that you weren’t just friends with Seth either. That was why, when the Canes lost in the second round to the Rangers, you weren’t terribly upset.
It meant that Seth was coming home and staying home, at least for a little while, and you could make your move.
You and Seth made plans to see each other the day following the loss. He spent the night alone at home, mourning the end of his season and resting after battling through injury for so long. He hadn’t even told you about it, just occasionally acting miserable about some soreness in his joints. You were angry about that, sure, but you knew a way that he could make it up to you.
But all of that hinged on getting Seth to put his fingers in your mouth again.
He came over to your apartment under the guise of watching a movie– a low-risk activity, because you were still punishing him for not telling you about his injury. He knew that if he had told you about it, you would have told him not to play. You would have convinced him that it was dangerous and that he would just hurt himself more and the worst part is, he would have listened. He would’ve prioritized you over hockey, which is much more dangerous to him than any injury could be, considering you’re not even together.
You let Seth pick the film, because you obviously weren’t planning to watch it. He chose to watch Wolf of Wall Street, like a typical man, and as much as the success story and subsequent downfall of Jordan Belfort interested you, you didn’t care. You talked. You talked and talked through the movie, something you knew Seth hated.
He was reverent when it came to films he enjoyed, and you knew that each time you opened your mouth, he clenched his jaw just a little bit harder. He was holding himself together well, but when the elevator scene comes on, you know you have to make your move.
“Jealous,” you mumbled under your breath, quieter than most of the things you had said during the film, but loud enough for Seth to hear.
“What?” Seth asked, looking to confirm that he heard you right.
“I’m jealous, Jarvy.” You threw your head back on the couch cushions in exasperation and tilted to look at him. “It’s been so long since I had something in my mouth.”
Seth paled at your words. The color drained from his face in the way that it does when a man thinks something dirty, but is ashamed of it. You almost wanted to laugh at him, but you held yourself together.
“You, uh, haven’t been with anyone lately?” Seth asked, feigning nonchalance by clearing his throat. He wiped his hands on his shorts, shifting in his seat.
You threw yourself over his lap, draping yourself dramatically. This wasn’t uncommon for you to do, but Seth stiffened. He was tense beneath you, no doubt trying to keep you from wiggling over his cock and causing him to grow hard. He’s already a little stiff just from the thought of your lips wrapped around something and the bliss that he imagines would cover your features.
“No,” you whined, complaining with a miserable pout on your lips. “Every guy I’ve met is just so boring.”
“Boring,” Seth repeated, already looking a little far away… your pout had served its purpose. It had drawn his eyes to your mouth and now he was transfixed, his mind still racing with the image of your lips around a cock– his cock.
You sighed in satisfaction when you felt his cock twitch in his shorts, growing harder near your head. It would be so easy to just reach over and take him out of his shorts, fit him in your hand, and suckle at his tip. You covered up the satisfaction by pretending like you’re sighing in frustration.
“What should I do, J?” You asked, batting your eyelashes.
He’s quiet, still watching your mouth. His hand found your arm, rubbing it softly. His other hand toyed with the ends of your hair.
“Seth?” You pressed.
“I could…” He trailed off, bringing his thumb down from your hair to caress your cheek.
You stared up at him, hoping to look helpless, hoping to look like you needed him to guide you. You wanted him to think that it was his idea, that he made the jump from friends to more. You just led him there.
“Do you want something to suck on?” He asked.
“Mm-hmm.” You nodded, hoping your hum came out like a whine.
He brought his thumb to your lip, tracing the bottom edge of it. “I could give you my finger,” he offered.
You nodded again, opening your mouth to take it.
“Or,” he wondered, then hesitated.
You pulled back, eyes shining. “Or what?”
“You could suck my cock.”
The idea sent a shiver up your spine. Seth said it like he’s nonchalant, like he’s just throwing it out there, but there’s a hint of desire in his eyes. He needs this, you can tell. He wants this.
You licked the pad of his thumb, fitting your tongue around the digit. You bobbed your head just a little bit, never tearing your eyes away from Seth’s. While his pupils were still transfixed on your plush lips around him, you trailed your hand up his thigh to palm his bulge.
His lips parted at the contact, giving you a good view of his tongue sweeping over his chapped lip, then biting it.
“I want to,” you said, sliding his hand from your mouth to intertwine your fingers. You maneuvered so that you were between his thighs and he was laying longways on the couch, the Wolf of Wall Street still playing on in the background. You bit your lip and pulled the waistband of his shorts down, achingly slow. You brought his underwear with them, inching them down to reveal his cock, which sprung back toward his stomach once your freed it. You paused, then admitted shyly, “Been thinking about it.”
Seth moaned at that, taking your hand again and holding it against his chest. You pushed his shirt up so that you could splay the fingers on your other hand over his abdomen, thumbing over his happy trail. You looked up at him from between his legs, your mouth open near the base of his cock.
You leaned forward, drawing one of his balls into your mouth. You lathered your tongue over the skin, groaning softly at the feeling of having something in your mouth, at the taste of Seth. You held him in your mouth for a moment, savoring the slightly salty, very musky taste that enveloped the buds on your tongue. You drew your mouth away reluctantly, licking up his shaft until you reached his tip.
His cock kicked against your lips, but you followed it with your jaw wide. You took the head into your mouth, closing your lips around it. You sucked in soothing, gentle beats, closing your eyes with the satisfaction that came with having something in your mouth again– something you had plotted so diligently to acquire.
You let out a quiet moan, content with where you were. You sucked on him the way you sometimes, shyly, always alone, sucked on your own thumb when you were feeling particularly needy. It was slow and deliberate and comforting.
And absolutely miserable for Seth.
It felt good– God, of course it felt good– but it wasn’t enough. You were teasing him, your lips tight around the most sensitive part of his cock, your tongue occasionally flicking over his slit to gather his precum. When it wasn’t tasting him, your tongue was pressed against the underside of his tip, flexing with each suck.
And the way you looked up at him, fuck. Your eyes were wide and full of love and Seth could barely handle it.
He gasped and brought a hand to your hair.
“More,” Seth breathed out, pushing your head down, but not hard enough to actually move you. He didn’t want to make you gag.
You gagged yourself anyway, sinking lower and lower until you had taken all of him in your mouth. Even then, even after gagging, you looked up at him and the only thing that could describe the light in your eyes was this: you were filled with glee.
Seth’s chest felt tight, like he couldn’t take in a full breath. He was stuttering, no longer paying attention to the movie. He couldn’t form words– for someone who talked so much, you were proud of yourself for rendering him speechless.
You bobbed your head, drawing Seth closer to orgasm with each stroke. You let your eyes shift in and out of focus, looking up at Seth at times so he could see the tears building along your waterline. You took in the hair on his body– the dark line of his happy trail, the tickle of his trimmed pubes against the tip of your nose on particularly deep swallows.
Seth’s hand squeezed yours, his grip tight. “Fuck, Y/N.” He thrust his hips up, causing your throat to constrict around him. You moaned at the reverent call of your name, bringing your other hand down to trace the skin of Seth’s balls, cupping them gently in your palm.
You could feel them tense beneath your fingers, a laugh building in your throat. Seth wasn’t far from orgasm now. You pulled your mouth off for just a second to say, “You should come, Jarvy.”
His jaw dropped open, hand tightening in your hair. He convulsed under you, twitches that pushed his cock further down your throat until his tip was brushing the back of it. His spongy head was bumping against your oropharynx and it sent shock waves up his spine with each touch.
He chased the sensation, curses tumbling from his lips as he started to let go. He filled your mouth with his tangy seed, and whined at the moan you released, wanton as if you were drinking the nectar of the gods. You swallowed eagerly, your muscles working around the length of him.
Seth came for what seemed like forever, the aftershocks keeping him tense. His hand stayed on your head, keeping you there. His hand stayed on your hair to ensure that you were still real, because if he looked down at you again, he’d come for a second time. If he looked down at you, holding his softening cock in his mouth, still so happy to be sucking on something, he might pass out.
You could fit his cock in your mouth much better now that he was soft. You readjusted, laying with your cheek on the inside of his thigh. You burrowed into him, filling yourself with him, and closed your eyes.
“What are you doing?” Seth groaned out, confused.
“Finish your movie,” you told him, words jumbled as you spoke around his length. “Wanna hold you a while longer.”
You closed your eyes and breathed deeply, the sounds of The Wolf of Wall Street filling your ears. Seth’s hand pet through your hair and lulled you to sleep, a bit of drool leaking out of your relaxed mouth and onto his thigh.
When you woke, you brought him to orgasm again. When you came over to his the following day, you kneeled beneath him again. Like you said– your oral fixation was an open secret. Seth just used that to his advantage.

not okay ― seth jarvis
Tumblr media Tumblr media
note: this was inspired after seeing this interview. he literally has a whole other mouth above his lip. also this isn't me romantisizing injuries at all, it's moreso a comfort fic. summary: after getting injured in game 5, seth feels fine, but after the hard-hit in game 7, seth doesn't feel so hot. warnings: seth’s injury (both the strome one and the trouba one) word count: 655 words
hotdog in hand, you sat with the rest of the girls, enjoying just being there. you were having some serious imposter syndrome.
just a few months ago you were sitting in an arena nowhere as big as pnc arena you were used to, and now you were sitting next to the partners of the carolina hurricanes, in a playoffs jacket of your own, cheering on your boyfriend who was on the very team.
you were mid-conversation when you watched seth fall to the ice. you stopped talking when you saw he wasn't getting up. the play kept going but seth stayed on the ice, holding his face, which sent you into a panic.
"oh, god." you stood up, eyes stuck on the ice. the whistle was blown and a trainer was rushed onto the ice. you could see the specks of blood on the ice all the way from the box. he stood up and the trainer immediately pressed a towel to his bleeding face and held it.
the moment he shuffled down the tunnel, you gathered your stuff and moved faster than the flash. someone followed behind you but you honestly didn't care.
the only thing that mattered was seth.
you made it down to the medical room and found him sitting on the table, towel against his mouth, "oh, my god." you gasped, rushing in and pushing his hand that was holding the towel out of the way.
"i'm-"
"if the next words out of your mouth are "i'm okay", i'm gonna knock you out." you glared.
"okay, i'm not okay." he shrugged.
"seth, stop trying to act all nonchalant. this is serious."
"i really do feel fine. i'm okay," he told you.
4 days later, it was finally time for game 7. you were about 8 minutes, almost 9, into the 1st period. things were great, you settled into your seat with a snack in hand when jacob trouba barreled straight into seth.
he didn't even get back up and skate back over to the bench, he crawled over. the play continued and the rangers scored, but that was the last thing on your mind.
he crawled back over to the bench.
a few of the guys were huddled in front of him, checking in on him but you knew something was wrong. they helped him up and down the tunnel, a trainer following behind him.
you sat in your seat, trying to comprehend what you had just witnessed, "okay, let's get you some water." one of the girls rubbed your back while someone got a cup of water.
you took the water and drank it down. all the girls were focused on you, making sure you were okay, the game forgotten, "you wanna go down?" you nodded, "all right, let's go." one of the girls gathered your stuff and walked with you down to the medical room you were in only 4 days previously.
he was laying on the table this time, his eyes closed. you walked in slowly and pulled up the chair next to the table. he opened one eye and looked over at you.
"hi." you whispered.
"i'm not okay." he whispered.
your brows furrowed together, "i know, baby. i know." you leaned down and kissed his head.
after getting evaluated, he was for sure not going back out. after being sent home, you helped him through the door of your apartment and helped him into bed.
you turned off the lights and got him a glass of water. after you got ready for bed, you climbed into bed next to him. he immediately wrapped his arms and legs around you.
you wrapped your arms around him, pressing a kiss on his head, "i'm really proud of you. you were amazing." you whispered.
he didn't respond, but you knew he heard you because he squeezed your side softly, "i love you." he murmured.
"i love you, too."

5 Feet of Snow; S. Jarvis
This is written for the @ghostyjosty 2.2k writing challenge! I’ve rewritten this 5 times for optimal perfection. Enjoy! <3
Tumblr media
Seth Jarvis x Reader; dancing with their hands holding onto each other / Definitely a blurb :))
Warnings; Cursing
🌨 Raleigh got hit with their biggest snowstorm yet. Well.. since 2000. And nobody was prepared. Except Sebastian Aho with a huge radio.
-> 🌨 ->
I absolutely loved seeing that there was a blizzard warning until the 31st. Growing up in North Carolina, snow wouldn’t be real snow. It would be slush and be gone before the sun even had time to travel it’s heat to the Earth.
Tonight it was supposed snow so much it would topple over me. Or Andrei.
I stayed over at Sebastian Ahos house, he had snow tires to drive me home. His car was a sedan though, so I don’t know how that would work.
And my favorite person was at Sebastian’s house — that’s also another reason I came.
“I wanted to bring something over, but the grocery store was like a crime scene.” I set my coat on the rack and get some snowflakes off my hair.
“Yeah, I know we tried to get bread. There was none. So we got yeast packets!“ Sebastian grabs one and shakes it in the air.
“How many did you get?” I look over at the kitchen to see like 6 boxes of active dry yeast. Were they gonna make sourdough starter under the sink?
“6 boxes, they have like 10 each. I absolutely love baking banana bread.” Sebastian sets the packet down.
“That’s pretty cool! My apartment has absolutely no food. Well, except pasta but it was the little spiral and I fucking hate those.”
->
The snow was covering half the window and the power started to flicker.
“I realized you don’t have a second coat here, and you might not be able to get home..” Seth taps my shoulder and I smile.
“Oh no, no I’m fi-“ The power completely goes off and the cold air from outside started to come in. “Im fine.”
“Okay.. let me know when you need it.”
->
Who knew 26 (F) degrees could be so cold??
Anyways, the temperature in Sebastian’s house was at 47. I’d have to take up the offer on that hoodie soon.
“This radio has signal to Finland! There’s a huge game today.” Sebastian grabs a huge radio and sets it on the coffee table.
“That thing is bigger than my moms TV in the 90s.” I flip the handle back and he screams.
“No! Don’t touch it, I only use it for the World Juniors. It was also like a fuck ton of money.”
I laugh and Sebastian sets the station. It was in Finnish but Finland was probably winning by the sound of it.
“Who’s-“ Seth sits next to me and Sebastian interrupts him.
“SHUSH 👹” He looks over at us.
“I’d like to take you up on the offer.” I put my hands over my forearms. Seth goes up and grabs the sweatshirt.
“Here you go, I got like 20 more in my closet if you need it.”
“Nope I’m good.” I smile.
->
“What? No! Cmon!” Sebastian bangs the radio, it started playing some type of Jazz. “Right as they were about to win!”
I stand up and grab my bag.
“I’m gonna go, use the sound waves to let me know when to come back.” I walk out the door and try to walk through the snow.
The snow was already up to my knees, Seth came running out and he grabs me, pulling me into a hug.
The snow started to pick up, it was windy and I’m pretty sure I was completely covered in snow.
I hug him back and I could still hear Sebastian screaming about the music. It only changed the station to a classic music one.
The snow started getting higher, and wearing jeans with some rips in them wasn’t a wise choice.
I start to sway to the music, you know.. to forget that I might have no legs tomorrow.
“Could’ve just asked to dance.” He looks at me and I shake my head.
“Nope,” I smile. “This is definitely better.”
->
Sorry this is so short, I’m literally finishing this at 10:42 PM on December 31st. I really did draft this several times so it isn’t just some random story I put together. Also always ask for consent to dance with someone. :))

I’ve loved you three
Summers
Chapter 3
Warnings: language, kissing, mild sexual content, some angst and mentions of manipulative/abusive relationships.
Hello friends! Happy this is starting to catch on a bit. @cellythefloshie s chapter should be up soon! When it’s posted I’ll link it here!
Thanks!! Enjoy and let me know what you think.
Tumblr media
The grocery store was mostly empty at this early morning hour and Madison was thankful because she had Seth on the brain.
They’d parted ways last night with more kissing and she hadn’t seen him since then.
And she was kind of glad.
She hadn’t even begun to process what had happened the night before and was still not totally sure it wasn’t a dream. The situation with her and Seth could go one of two ways. It could either be a wonderful amazing adventure or she could run the risk of losing a lifelong friend. It really just came down whether it was worth the risk, which she already decided it was. But it wasn’t only up to her. She had no idea how he was feeling.
If she hadn’t been thinking about Seth, she would have been paying closer attention, but she didn’t even see him coming till it was too late.
“Madison?”
She turned and felt something that could only be described as dread start to settle in her stomach.
Darren was standing a few feet away, fake smile plastered on his face, the same one he wore the very first time she ever met him. She did not return it.
“Hey how are you?” He moved closer and she took a small step back. Annoyance flickered across his face.
“Fine.” She moved to walk away from him but when he followed and she turned to face him fully, arms crossed with a frown.
“Is uh-is Harper here?” He asked glancing over her shoulder.
She scoffed “No Darren. She’s not here, but I’m guessing you knew that already. Leave my sister alone.”
“How is she?”
“Did you hear what I just said? It’s none of your business. If you wanted to know that I guess you should have spent the last 6 years treating her better.” Madison’s brows were pulled low over her eyes which were blazing with anger. She wanted to punch him right in the throat and run him over with the cart.
“You don’t know anything!” He snapped loudly at her, drawing the attention of the few people nearby.
But Madison wasn’t having it and stood her ground.
“You might have been able to bully my sister but don’t think for one second you’re going to bully me.” Madison was glaring at him “Stay away from Harper. If you ever really loved her you’ll let her move on. Or if you want to tempt fate show up to the house. I dare you.” Madison smiled a little and for the first time Darren’s confidence faltered. He knew better.
“Can you tell her-“
“Fuck off.” She turned away from him, heart beating loudly in her chest. Darren didn’t scare her, but her sister potentially having to suffer for it did.
She didn’t want to tell Harper and upset her but it would also upset her if she didn’t and Harper found out later. She was glad she had elected to take the grocery store errand and that Harper didn’t or it would be a very different conversation they’d be having
Madison checked out, not even sure she'd gotten everything, and made her way home, noting Seth’s car absent from his driveway, but that Harper’s car was parked in theirs.
She made her way very slowly inside, dreading the conversation she was going to be forced to have with her, and found her at the island in the kitchen.
Harper glanced up with a big smile but it faded a little when she saw her face “You didn’t hit another car in the parking lot, did you?” she teased.
Maddie shook her head and cleared her throat “I ran into Darren while I was at the store, i was just grabbing-“ she sighed, it didn’t really matter what she was grabbing “Nevermind, when he approached me, he acted like he just happened to be there at the same time, which was fine, until he started looking around, waiting, as if you were just going to walk up to us right there in the store, and when you didn’t he got really….” Maddie trailed off “Angry. He started asking where you were, how he could contact you. If I could give you a message-“
Harper’s face was unreadable, and Maddie wasn’t sure if she was mad or sad or even maybe a little bit scared. It had upset Maddie that she’d seen him and he made a huge scene like that, but it would upset her more if this upset Harper.
Sighing, Harper ran her hand through her hair, and sat down with her sister at the island shoulders slouched “He knows where I am,” she sighed, “He’s just too scared to come here.”
They shared a smile and Maddie said, “Dad.”
“Exactly. I can be safe here-” Maddie frowned hoping that Harper wasn’t alluding to what she thought she was “Hey,” she took her sister’s arm, “He never hurt me. Not in the way you think. And he didn’t hurt you, right?”
“I would have cut his hand right off if he had touched me.” Harper laughed and hugged Maddie to her.
”You still going out with your friends?”
Maddie nodded. She had lunch planned with friends mostly as a distraction and to give her some extra thinking time before she saw Seth later on. She would be prepared by then.
“Good, you go get ready, I’ll put the groceries away. Before you go, my new number is on the fridge, and if you need me and I’m not in here, I’ll be by the pool.”
Madison stood and squeezed her hand “I’m really glad you left him Harper. He never deserved you.”
She made her way through the house and up the steps to her room to ready herself for lunch with friends.
**********
Seth was sitting on his bed with his arms crossed staring at the opposite wall. His house was completely silent, which was unusual under normal circumstances but now with Svech living there it was even more. He’d watched Madison leave early, and then leave again and had been sitting in silence since then thinking about her.
He’d done a lot of reflection over the last few hours, having not slept barely at all, and he’d come to the conclusion that he and Madison just made sense. The writing had been on the wall for years and he’d been so wrapped up in hockey that he hadn't been playing close enough attention. If he had it wouldn’t have taken him 21 summers to realize that there’d always been something there just under the surface. It couldn’t be undone now, and it almost made him laugh at how dumb he was. Things he’d forgotten about were starting to come back to him. Most of their close friends knew that their friendship was strictly a friendship. But there had been some questions about them and their relationship over the years.
“So what’s with you and Madison Alexander?”
Seth looked up and frowned at Meghan, a girl he’d been kind of hanging out with for the last week or so. She was picking at a manicured fingernail and glanced up.
“What do you mean?”
She shrugged and crossed her arms “Well you guys seem close and she’s the most popular girl in school.” She said it with some bitterness. Madison was in fact the most popular girl in school and for good reason. She was gorgeous, friendly and approachable, and Seth could tell Meghan was jealous. Madison’s popularity wasn’t anything new to him though and he never really thought about her the way others did. But Meghan was obviously insecure and he could sort of understand why.
She was popular but not Madison popular and the one times they’d crossed paths Meghan had been standoffish. Maddie seemed to not notice, but Seth did and it was starting to make sense now.
“And that’s got what to do with anything?”
Meghan shrugged “Just wondering.”
“Mads is my oldest friend. We basically grew up together.”
“And you like her?”
Seth paused and turned to her “No….? Not like that anyways-“
“Then why’d you blow me off for her last night?”
He hadn’t.
Well sort of. He was supposed to hang out with Meghan the night before but he’d spent the afternoon with Maddie and Harper next door. So when they’d insisted he come with them to get food, he had cancelled plans with Meghan and went with Maddie and Harper instead, unbeknownst to them.
He liked Meghan but she could be a lot, and hanging out with Maddie and Harper was so easy.
“I just-“
“I think your hanging out with me and hooking up with her or the other one behind my back.”
“Woah woah hang on.” He held up a hand “First of all, I’m not hooking up with Madison and if I was I wouldn’t be hanging out with you, and second of all, Harper is 23 and used to babysit us. What is your problem? Maddie’s been nothing but nice since you met her.”
“I don’t want you hanging out with her.”
Seth’s mouth fell open “Are you kidding? Your telling me who I can and can’t hang out with? We’ve been talking for like a week.”
“Okay well let me make it really easy for you then. If you wanna continue to talk, and you wanna date me, you can’t be friends with her.” She crossed her arms “Pick one.”
Serbs mouth fell open and he scoffed “Okay. Her.”
The smile slipped from her face and her mouth opened “Wh-what did you say?”
“Her.”
Meghan started yelling and pointing and calling him names, which he wasn’t surprised about, and next thing he knew he was making his way through his backyard and into Madison’s.
She smiled and waved “Hey you okay?”
He sat down on the chair next to her “Fine why?”
She raised an eyebrow and he sighed “You know that girl? Meghan that I was hanging out with?”
“Mhm.” She curled a leg underneath her and pushed a strand of hair from her forehead.
“She-I blew her off to hang out with you guys last night-“
“Seth why would-“
“And she told me that if I wanna date her I can’t be friends with you anymore.”
Maddie looked alarmed and her lips parted “Wow. That escalated uh-fast. So what did you say?”
He gave her a long look “You’ve been a great friend so it sucks that we have to stop being friends this way -“ but he couldn’t even get the words out before he started laughing.
A smile broke out across her face “You douche.”
“I’m kidding. I told her that I didn’t think it was gonna work. I’m not going to give up my friends.”
“I get it but still. That’s not fair of her to ask in my opinion and for her to think we’re hooking up is crazy.”
He chuckled and leaned back arms crossed “Not really. She thought I was hooking up with Harper too.”
“WHAT.”
A splash from next door interrupted his thoughts and he pushed himself up into a kneeling position on his bed. From his room he could see clear into both the Alexander’s back yard, Maddie’s room and part of the kitchen. It had made for one hell of a vantage point for years of hide and seek.
But what surprised him even more was that the splash from the pool was not only Harper, but Svech as well. A bold move he thought to himself with a smile and a chuckle.
Oh he was so getting in on this.
**********
It was late afternoon when Maddie returned home, now noting that all the cars, except her dads cruiser, were accounted for in both driveways, and that Seth and Andrei were both out front.
Fuck.
She hadn’t talked to him all day, assuming he too was deep in thought about what had happened the night before or he was avoiding her. She’d also been a little worried that maybe he hadn’t been thinking about her at all. Maybe it was just another kiss with another girl and things would go back to normal. Either way, she wasn't about to reach out first. She didn’t even know what to say to him.
By the time she got out of the car Andrei had all but disappeared and Seth was making his way over looking at her apprehensively and smiled “Hi.”
She felt her knees get weak and sucked in a breath “Hi.”
She shut her car door and made her way to the front meeting him in the middle. He looked nervous, and she reached forward grabbing his hand and motioned towards her house with a smile “Come on.”
Harper wasn’t in the lower half of the house, and was presumably unpacking in her basement apartment. Seth followed her up the stairs and into her bedroom, which he’d been in before but that was before he’d kissed her in the backyard.
She shut the door behind her and turned to him, brushing past him and sitting on her bed. She patted the space next to her motioning for him to sit. He felt nervous and sweaty and he had no clue what was going on with him. He never got nervous to talk to girls but kissing her last night had rattled him.
Maddie was different. But thinking back he realized she’d always been different to him.
He cleared his throat “So about last night. Should we talk about it?” His arm brushed hers and sent goosebumps across it and despite the warm weather she gave a little shiver.
Maddie looked at her legs dangling off the bed and smiled “Probably..” she had her hands resting on her knees and tentatively he reached out to hold one, resting it there a second before he spoke.
“You know I really care about you right?”
She nodded, her thumb sweeping across the skin of his hand “Yes.”
“And I would never jeopardize our friendship if I didn’t think that maybe we were more than that?…Are we more than that?”
“I think we could be. If you want that is.” She smiled at him, hair spilling over her shoulder as she turned her head to the side. If she hadn’t been holding his hand he would have thought this was a dream. She’d smiled at him more times than he could count, but never like this. It made his stomach churn, and his heart start to pound.
“More than you know. So does that mean I can kiss you again?”
She smiled and nodded, meeting him halfway fingers still intertwined with his. He kissed her very slowly and sweetly, the hand that wasn’t holding hers came up to slide up her neck and rest on her cheek.
It did not last.
Years of feelings and sexual tension began to bubble over like water on a stove. She gave him a little tug and they moved over the bed, her underneath him as he slotted himself between her legs and a hand tangled in her hair. She lost track of what she was doing and let out a breath when he ground his pelvis into hers.
“Is your dad home?” He murmured against her mouth, breath coming out in gasps.
“No.” She pulled the back of his shirt up, tugging it over his head and tossing it down on the floor. She unbuttoned the tank top she was wearing as he sprung the zipper on her shorts and pulled them down her legs, leaning forward to kiss her again as she pulled at the waistband of his shorts. Her heart was beating so loud it was drowning out the hearing in her ears but not enough that they didn’t hear the front door slam from downstairs startling them apart.
“Girls! You home?” Her dad called. She heard his footsteps start to come up the steps and Seth jumped off of her, looking around in a panic. She jumped up nearly falling over as she yanked her shorts up and threw on his shirt, shoving him inside her closet just as her dad knocked on the door. She took a deep breath and opened it.
“Oh hey dad-what uhm. What’s up?” She was breathing heavy and leaned against the door.
He was frowning at her “Are you okay?”
“Yeah why wouldn’t I be okay?” She chuckled a little.
He looked past her into her room and then down at her clothes “Who’s shirt is that?”
“Oh it’s-mine, it’s mine. I found it in my closet.” She was a terrible liar and she could see her dad didn’t believe a word she said.
He nodded slowly eyebrows raised “Right. Is your sister home?”
“I think she’s in the basement.”
“Okay are you staying in for the rest of the day?”
She glanced at the closet “Mhm.”
“Great. I’m going to go talk to Harper and then get some sleep.”
“Okay sounds good. Get some rest big guy, you deserve it. Love you.” She called leaning out the doorway with a big smile.
He chuckled “Love you too Mads.”
She closed the door casually and locked it, letting out the breath she’d been holding and creeping across the floor to open the closet. Seth was crying with laughter inside the closet, hand over his mouth as he leaned on the wall and whispered “He definitely knew I was in here. He’s gonna kill me I-“
“He’s definitely going to kill you if he hears you in here now shh!” Madison shushed him with a giggle and made her way across the room to close her curtains, and flipped her tv on, leaving them in partial darkness. She pulled Seth’s shirt over her head and handed it to him, reaching for her own shirt on the end of the bed.
He sat on her bed and shrugged it back on “This looks better on you.” He watched her with admiration as she pulled the tank top back on over her shoulders and buttoned it, pushing her hair over her shoulder.
She smiled at him and turned the volume on the tv up enough that they could talk undetected and seated herself next to him, getting as close as she possibly could. Though this was the first time she’d ever laid next to him in bed in a romantic way, it felt so natural. Like they’d been doing this since forever, almost as if it was meant to be. He ran a hand up her arm to her shoulder, turning slightly so he could lean down to kiss her again, but she pulled away, instead running her lips over his jaw, tongue sliding across his neck.
She could feel him squirming around and smiled a little.
“Stop.” He pulled her mouth off his neck, holding her face in his hands.
“Stop what?”
“You know what. If you keep doing that I’m gonna start yelling. And then you know what’ll happen.”
“My dad finding you in my room half dressed? He’d probably shoot you.”
“Your dad loves me.” he ran a hand up the side of her neck.
“Not that much.” She sucked in a breath as he leaned down to kiss her again, hand brushing up under her shirt. As his fingers moved across her waist, goosebumps bloomed across her skin and she gave a shiver. She wanted to so bad, but her sisters room was directly under hers and her dad was just down the hall.
He pulled back to look at her, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek “You know we can’t do this right?” He said quietly with a small frown “Not with an audience. And I wanna do this right.”
She nodded and sighed “I know. Where though?” She added with a chuckle.
He laughed and ran his fingers through her hair “We’re in our 20s. It’s supposed to be easier to find places to hook up, not harder.”
She chuckled and sighed “I know. But I live with Elliot Stabler and the genius who’s spiraling in the basement and these walls are paper thin. How do you think Harper knows about all the bad shit we did growing up.”
He laughed and ran a finger across her collarbone “True. My house is out of the question too, between my parents and Svechy. Hey we-“
“Absolutely not.” She said putting a hand up.
“You don’t even-“
“The Tiguan is out of the question Seth.”
His mouth fell open and he deflated a little “Okay okay. Just a suggestion sheesh….but out of curiosity why not? Is there something wrong with my Tiguan?”
“That thing is one hopped curb short of being held together by duct tape. Too much movement and it’s falling apart.”
“You have a lot of confidence in my abilities.”
She rolled her eyes and gave the skin on his waist a squeeze “Guess that means you’ll have to really wow me.”
“Oh I’ll wow you.” He said leaning down to kiss her.
Hours later, she’d managed to sneak Seth out undetected and sent him back to his house with another quick kiss and a wave and she was now lying across her bed fighting the urge to kick and squeal because her dad was still asleep down the hall.
She felt her phone buzz and picked it up to see a message from Seth.
What are the odds you can sneak out later?
She smiled and glanced up through the curtains at his window Not so great. That’s the trouble living with a trained investigator.
Damn. Guess I’ll just have to visualize. So what’re you wearing?
Madison giggled and put a hand over her mouth eyes swiveling to the ceiling An oversized shirt and socks.
That’s it? Nothing else?
Like what?
Nothing underneath?
Maddie grinned evily Why would there be? I don’t wear underwear
Across the yard, in Seth’s room a phone slipped from his hand and fell to the floor. He let his head fall back and huffed.
She was killing him.
He’d kissed her on two occasions and she had him wrapped, but before he could have any more thoughts about Madison, or her underwear or anything, Svech burst through the door to his bedroom startling him.
“Do they not practice KNOCKING in Russia Jesus Christ.” He said grabbing the spot over his heart.
“What are you smiling about? And where you been all afternoon?” Andrei asked him sitting at the end of his bed.
“None of your business nosey. How goes the plan to get Harper to acknowledge your existence? Or are you still invisible?”
“Ha ha.” He said squinting at him “We’re not talking about me.”
Seth laughed and shrugged “I’m just having a good day is all.”
“And does that good day have a name? Madison maybe?”
Seth kicked at him “Never you mind about my good day. What’s the next step in your master scheme? You’ve tried stalking, complimenting-“
“I did not stalk her-“
“You.” Seth said sitting up pointing at him “Showed up at her job to go running when she didn’t want you there. I don’t know what they call that in Russia but here that’s stalking my guy.”
“And you.” Andre said pointing at him “Went with me so that makes you an accomplice. And I did it at the suggestion of your good day.”
“My good day never explicitly told you-“
“Aha! So she is your good day.” Andrei said slapping him on the shin and grinning.
Seth sputtered at him for a second before he broke out into a smile “Fuck off.”
“Joking, I’m joking. Is that what Harper meant by “Being good to my sister? Or whatever she said.”
“I think so. Maddie must have said something, I don’t know. Harper knows everything about everyone so maybe she just guessed. She’s smart.” He tapped his temple and Andrei rolled his eyes.
“So tell me.”
“Tell you what?”
“Don’t be an idiot okay?”
Seth was laughing and shrugged “It’s been nice. We gotta get you your own Alexander sister buddy.” He slapped him on the back and stood “Come on, can we go eat I’m starving. We can hatch a plan to make Harper fall in love with you before the summers over.”
Andrei watched as Seth stood and cleared his throat “So you think she might like me a little bit? Maybe?”
Seth grinned “ She will if I have anything to do with it.”
**************
Maddie made her way through the house looking for Harper. She couldn’t talk with her dad about it, and her friends had been too wrapped up with their stuff to pay Maddie and her summer dramas any mind. In fact it had been over a week since she’d even seen or spoken to them. While Harper gave great advice, she was also uniquely qualified to speak about her and Seth because she’d basically raised both of them. Harper wouldn’t steer her wrong.
But really Maddie just wanted to talk. As a teen, before Harper moved out, they’d spent many nights talking and giggling together until their dad finally had to enforce curfew because they were keeping him up at night.
But as Maddie opened the basement door to descend the steps, she heard Harper crying. She paused and stood at the top of the stairs for second before she backed up and shut the door quietly. She wouldn’t bother Harper with this. As she made her way through the kitchen she spotted Seth and Andrei making their way though the driveway to Seth’s car talking and laughing. Seth spotted her through the large kitchen window and smiled and waved at her, which she returned before she made to turn and ran smack into her dad.
“Jesus dad I-“
“You going out with them?” He nodded to the Jarvis’s driveway.
“Me? No im going to sketch a while. Why would I be going out with them?”
“Did you or did you not go golfing with them yesterday?”
She chuckled “How did-Yeah but what’s that have to do with anything?”
He crossed his arms and peered down at her “And which one was in your room when I came home?”
Maddie wanted to shrivel up and die right there on the hallway rug as she looked up at her dad. Though historically he wasn’t a yeller, she and Harper had never really tested his patience. Maddie had always been more trouble prone than her sister but having a boy into her bedroom closet was a new one. They’d always followed the house rules, and their dad was laid back for the most part.
But he didn’t seem angry. He stood staring at her eyebrows raised “Hmm?”
Maddie felt her face get red and cleared her throat, straightening up and looking her dad in the eye “Seth.”
Surprise registered across his face and his mouth opened “Really?”
She hoped that because her dad loved Seth and had watched him grow up that he wouldn’t be as upset about it if it had been Andrei, a guy who had just shown up a week ago. She cleared her throat, crossing her fingers behind her back and smiled hopefully at her dad “So how much trouble am I in?”
He shrugged “Why would you be in trouble?”
“Because I lied. I had a boy in my bedroom….i lied? Really nothing?”
He frowned but looked amused “Do you want to be in trouble?”
She shook her head “No.”
“Okay then. But don’t do it again.” He warned pointing a finger at her.
“Yessir.” She said with a salute and a stifled giggle as she moved past her dad and up the steps pulling out her phone to text Seth with a small smile.
M: My dad knows you were in my closet. He said he’s looking for you.
S: WHAT.

Summers
Chapter 4
Warnings: Sex, implied sex, mentions of sex, mentions of manipulative/abusive relationships, depression, some language.
To be read in tandem with @cellythefloshie Cool for the summer!
Hi friends! This is overdue but here it is. Keep an eye out for 1K followers soon!
Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Maddie was humming absently while she sketched a dress for her summer assignment, small smile on her face. She had music playing low in the background and the sun was shining through her bedroom window as she moved her head along absently to the beat.
She’d been spending a lot of time with Seth, and sometimes Andrei for about a week now and every good summer before this one suddenly looked below average in comparison. Everything that had ever been said about summer love was 100% true.
She started noticing things about him she never had before. The way he smiled at her, the way he laughed, the way he held her hand. All of those things made her feel like she was on top of the world when he was around her.
“Madison.” She paused and turned to find her dad standing in her doorway in uniform, concern on his face. Usually when her dad made an unannounced visit to her room, it was to either ask her if she’d done something wrong, or scold her for doing something wrong. But this visit wasn’t about her for once.
“Who died?” She joked spinning around in her chair.
He scoffed and crossed his arms “I’m worried about your sister. She’s downstairs in bed-“
Mouths mouth fell open and she let out a breath “She’s STILL in bed?”
She’d barely seen Harper in a week. Now and again she’d emerge from the basement for a minute and go back down, and after the third day Madison was beginning to think she’d imagined Harper moving back home and the sister she’d spent the last few weeks unpacking with had been a figment.
He nodded “Yes. She doesn’t seem to want to talk to me. So I was hoping she’d talk to you. Maybe just let her know we’re here for her.” Her dad looked worried and she didn’t blame him. Harper had always been strong and capable. Now that had crumbled and her dad had seen the vulnerability and it scared him. Growing up they’d been opposites. Madison had been the one to give their dad a run for his money while Harper was the responsible, reliable older child. Now that Madison had her shit mostly together and Harper was barely hanging on, he didn’t quite know what to do. She supposed it was hard for him as a single dad with no one to turn to about how to fix her problems, which is why he was coming to her.
She was worried about Harper too, but she also knew to give her space for a while. Sometimes the more you pushed her, the further into her shell she went. Harper would need a lot of time to recover, but the time for space was running out.
“She knows that dad. She just doesn’t want to accept help because she doesn’t think she deserves it.”
How her dad let Darren continue to walk around alive Maddie would never know. Because he didn’t deserve it. Maddie would have sooner driven him to a cliff and shoved him off of it.
Her dad pursed his lips “That guy really did a number on your sister didn’t he?” He asked quietly.
“How hard is it to hide a body? Like on a scale of 1 to 10.” Madison asked “Out of curiosity of course.”
He chuckled and ran a hand over his hair “Like a 5, but that’s just what I’ve heard. So you’ll talk to her?”
Madison nodded “Of course. Don’t worry about it dad. Harper’s gonna be fine.” She tried to sound reassuring, and her dad smiled at her, though he didn’t look totally convinced, as he disappeared down the steps and out the front door and Madison made her way loudly downstairs stomping purposefully on each step so Harper could hear her coming.
She was going to try and set her straight once and for all. She could hear her sniffling as she made her way down the steps.
Harper was curled up in bed, nose red and snotty splotches across her cheeks. She looked like a sad sweaty mess. All the optimism she’d had just a few days ago was gone, and she was back to the Harper she’d been when she first showed up back home. Maddie hated it.
“Dad send you down here?” Harper asked quietly.
“No. I just wanted to come see my bright and cheery big sister.” Maddie said arms folded.
Harper curled up facing away from her “You two need to stop feeling sorry for me and just,” she sighed “leave me alone.”
Madison made her way over and sat on the end of Harper’s bed and let out a breathy laugh “No Harper I’m not going to leave you alone. Maybe you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself.” She crossed her fingers next to her lap, hoping that tough love was the right approach here and wouldn’t backfire.
Harper turned completely to look at her. She was frowning, looking a little mad and that gave Madison hope. At least she knew she was listening.
“I’m not-”
“Aren’t you?” Maddie cut her off “Because from where we are it sure seems that way. You've been laying down here for almost a week. You haven’t gone to work. You’ve barely eaten…Now your trying to shut us out. we’re worried about you. I know you’ve gotten used to being cast to the side, but it doesn’t work that way in this house and you know it.”
Harper was quiet, eyebrows furrowed so Madison continued before she could interject “I know what you’re going through can’t be easy. In fact I can’t even fathom how you're feeling about it all, but don’t you think you might feel better if you actually tried to feel better? It’s not good for you to be down here all the time by yourself.”
Maddie was right, and based on the look on Harper’s face she knew it too. Harper couldn’t heal all by herself. Since they were kids, and their mom died, Harper had been insistent on doing everything on her own. Taking care of everything and refusing help just wasn’t going to cut it anymore. She needed help, and Maddie was giving it to her whether she liked it or not,
Harper cleared her throat and sighed “What am I supposed to do Mads? You’re my only friend and the only other person who wants anything to do with me is that kid.”
Madison was smiling “Your not really in the position to be choosy about friends Harper. And what kid? You mean Andrei?”
Harper scoffed “Yeah, the man child.”
“You don’t even know him.” Madison was shaking her head with a chuckle “He’s not a bad guy and if you weren’t so insistent on being rude to him you would know that.”
“You sound just like dad,” Harper sighed falling back and hiding in the pillows.
Maddie shrugged “Maybe dads on to something. Harper I know you're still really hurting but at some point you know you have to try and heal right? If not for us, for yourself. And I have the perfect way to start. Some of my friends from school and I, we’re going out to the fair by the cabin for Canada day, you should come. Sarah’s sister is coming too, so it’s not like you’re going to be stuck with a bunch of us kids.” She said air quoting.
Harper looked apologetic and hugged her “You know I didn’t mean it like that.” She said quietly.
Maddie laughed, “I know and it’s okay. So you’ll come. It wasn’t a question by the way. More of a statement.”
“Yeah, I’ll come,” Harper smiled, for the first time in a week and it gave Maddie a glimmer of hope. Just a few hours ago she’d been bedridden in the dark, and now she was so willingly going running. A better result than she’d expected when she’d come downstairs.
“Good, now, what are you going to do about today? You’ve been in bed or days. Think maybe it’s time to face the world Harper Alexander? See that it’s not so bad out there?” Maddie turned her head to the side and smiled hopefully. She would do anything to get Harper out of the mental mess she was in right now.
“A run could do me some good, maybe?” Harper said quietly with a nod.
Except that.
“That sounds great, but I’m not coming with you. You know me, I don’t run unless I’m being chased and even then I don’t like to sweat.”
Harper laughed and moved to grab some of her running clothes, and the air in the room seemed to change.
“I’d never expect that from you.” Harper said with a chuckle.
“Good. I don’t want to see you for at least 45 minutes, an hour even, extra points if you throw another 30 minutes on to that. I mean it. Go clear your head, and come back with a new outlook on things. But not for an hour. Or else.” She said wagging a finger at her.
“Alright, alright, I’m gone. A whole hour.”
She watched with some hope and optimism as Harper readied herself to leave, some bounce in her step that hadn’t been there before. Madison took the basement steps two at a time and loitered around until she heard Harper call out an “I love you!” And leave.
She pulled out her phone
Dads at work. Come wow me. You promised😉
She tucked her phone in her pocket and watched as Harper jogged down the driveway and disappeared down the street. Seth’s parents van was gone, but his car was present in the driveway. She’d seen them leave during the morning but then return after lunch so she knew he was home. Whatever excuse he’d make to Andrei was his problem not hers, but there was 45 minutes of time they might not get again so he’d better hurry it up.
Her phone buzzed.
Be there in 5. A promise is a promise.
Maddie made her way up the steps to her bedroom, a ripple of excitement surging through her as she pulled the curtains closed, clicking on a small night light in the dark bedroom. She stood there in the middle of it, looking around at the walls and the photos on them. There was years of memories there, lots with Harper and other friends, and more with Seth than anyone. Summers, parties, roadtrips, the long weekend at the lake over the years. She had so much time with him already and the next step was about to take place right here in the midst of all these memories.
Her eyes moved to the picture tacked up on the board above her desk. Her, Seth, and Harper before he left home to go play in Portland. If you’d told that Madison she’d be here now waiting for Seth to sneak up to her bedroom she would have laughed and called you crazy. But she had no idea what was going to happen years later.
Madison and Harper were sitting on the floor of the living room, a bowl of popcorn between them as they watched the game on tv. Their dad was on the couch behind them paying bills, occasionally glancing up whenever the announcer started yelling.
“This quality blows.” Harper complained squinting at the picture “I can’t even see where he is.”
“He’s…right there.” Maddie said pointing at him.
They spent as many of these nights as they could in front of the tv to watch Seth play. He’d been gone for half a season now and while he didn’t spend a lot of time on the ice, they still watched and held out hope to see him a little bit. It was weird to not having him around, and the three of them tried to arrange a FaceTime call at least once a week. The girls had some trouble adjusting to his absence at first. Maddie had no one to hang out with and Harper had no one to mother. The last few times they’d spoken he seemed to be in better spirits than he’d been the first few months he’d been gone.
“Sure would be nice if he’d score a goal or get in a fight or something.” Their dad said from behind them.
The girls started giggling “No way.” Maddie said in between laughs “The last fight he got in was with Harper and he lost.”
Harper held up an arm, made a muscle and slapped her bicep area “Seth picked the wrong one. It also helped that Maddie held him down.”
“Leave that poor boy alone-“ Their dad chuckled and rolled his eyes but before he could continue Seth hopped on the ice and caught a breakaway which caused Maddie and Harper to both start yelling as they watched him race down the ice and score. They let out a screech and high fived as they watched him celebrate with his teammates.
“I miss him.” Maddie said leaning back against the sofa “It’s still weird not having him here.”
Harper nodded “Yeah I agree. There’s no one to pick on now that he’s gone.”
“Think he misses us?” Maddie asked glancing at her.
Harper nodded “Definitely. Probably carries around our school pictures.”
“Keeps them under his pillow at night.”
“While he cries himself to sleep.”
“I miss my best friends-my only friends. I miss my-“
“Okay okay enough.” Their dad was laughing behind them “He’s not here to defend himself. You two are ruthless.”
Maddie smiled a little at the memory and looked down at her feet. While she should have been nervous, she wasn’t. Sitting there on her bed, waiting for Seth to sneak over felt like she had been preparing for this moment her whole life. Like it had always been about this moment. She was nervous at all, not scared, not anxious. Just ready.
She heard the door open, and knew it was Seth by the sound of his footsteps. He came up the steps slowly, and made his way down the hall pausing outside of her door. She turned when she heard it open and smiled. She didn’t feel nervous, but he looked nervous.
He smiled back and shut it behind him locking it to be safe, and reached a hand forward to pull her to her feet.
“Are you sure? I just want to make sure your good with all this, and comfortable. I can wait if-“
“Seth. I don’t want to wait. I’m sure. 100%.”
He smiled and then said quietly “Are you nervous?” He had his hands braced on her waist.
She shook her head, wrapping her arms around his neck “No. Not with you. Are you?”
He shook his head back and forth and then said “Yes.” With a large smile before he moved forward, closing the gap between them. It was dark, and quiet and the tension in the her room was so heavy she was drowning in it but it all disappeared when he leaned down and kissed her.
He had been holding out on her.
It was heavy, the kind of kiss that hit her right in the lady parts, and would have knocked her out of her shoes if she’d been wearing them. She was so dazed she nearly forgot to kiss him back, but regained her composure and wrapped her arms around his neck. He had her backed up against bed now, hands everywhere, as they continued kissing. He was gentle as he eased her down on to her bed, hands sliding up underneath the T-shirt she was wearing, a winterhawks shirt he’d brought her home after his first season away.
“Can I take this off?” He asked pulling away for a moment. All the nerves Maddie hadn’t felt earlier she was feeling now. They had bubbled up into her throat making her unable to speak. She nodded, pulling herself up to a sitting position and raising her arms over her head so he could pull it off. He slid it very gently over her head, fingers brushing against her skin, leaving a trail of goosebumps behind.
Even in the dark she could feel his eyes move down her body, and a heat shot through her as he leaned forward agonizingly slow to kiss her again, stealing her air. She gripped the underside of his hair, moving her fingers down his shoulders to the hem of his shirt and gave it a tug, leaning back so he could pull it over his head. She reached down between them, fingers sliding down his abdomen to the waistband of his shorts, hooking her fingers in them.
Seth’s skin felt hot to the touch but he let out a little shiver as she ran her fingers just under the waistband. He stopped her though when she gave them another tug.
“Mmmm.” He shook his head and nodded to her “You first.”
She leaned back, undoing the button on her jean shorts and lifting her hips to wiggle them down her legs so he could pull them off. He nearly got lost for a second before he regained his confidence he’d had just a few seconds ago and tossed them to side.
She shook out her hair “Your turn.”
He shed his own shorts, just as she unhooked the clasp of her bra and stretched her legs out so he could pull her underwear off. He leaned down to kiss her again, pressing his front against her own, one of her arms coming to rest around his neck. Her skin was feverish against his as she gave a little shiver. He’d gotten himself so amped up he was getting ahead of himself, and took several deep breaths to slow himself down. He could feel Madison’s heart thumping around and brushed a strand of hair off her flushed cheek as he slotted himself between her legs, and looked up at her a lock of hair falling across his forehead.
“Ready?” He asked softly
She nodded, closing her eyes and he very slowly pushed inside, pausing as she rolled her hips around adjusting, before pulling back out and pushing in again this time more forceful. Seth had one arm braced on the mattress next to her head and the other was gripping her waist. He let his head fall forward, and it came to rest in the crook of her neck as he continued moving in and out of her. His vision turned sideways as he tried to focus on the drag of friction every time he moved, and Madison’s eyes slid closed, her back arching so far off the bed she could have levitated right off had he not been draped over her, a long slow breath escaping her lips as she did.
“Seth.” She breathed as one of his hands brushed against the smooth skin as the base of her throat. He kissed her hard, her teeth catching his bottom lip. He pushed harder and faster, and she let out a gasp as an ache settled between her legs and she started to shake. With a small squeal, she dug her nails into his arm and closed her eyes dreamily as the room turned upside down and inside out and she had a slow, pulsating orgasm that washed over her in waves. Seth followed immediately after, pushing as deep as he could before the burning sensation in his arms became too much and she draped himself over her both breathing heavily. As the stars dissipated and their heart rates slowed he finally looked up at her. He had a thin sheen of sweat on his forehead, and his hair was a mess but she could see his smile clear as day even in her darkened bedroom.
“So?” He asked after a few minutes of silence “On a scale of 1 to wow, where did that fall?”
She giggled as he pulled out and laid next to her “Definitely wow.”
Seth smiled and ran a finger across her jaw line and let out a breath “Mission accomplished. Have I ever told you how beautiful you are?” He sometimes couldn’t believe how beautiful she was. He wondered why he’d never noticed before, and what he’d been looking at for all these years. But all he could do was make up for lost time now.
She shook her head “No.”
“Hm.” He frowned and fixed her with a look “Well I’m gonna start. I’m gonna tell you everyday.”
She rolled her eyes and sat up glancing at the clock “Okay. Today though your going to have to tell me on the way out. It’s been 45 minutes and Harper can only run for so long.”
He sat bolt upright mouth open “Harper? Oh my god I didn’t even think about her being here. To be honest though I wasn’t really thinking with the right head when you texted me to come over.”
“Seth ew!” She picked up a pillow and smacked him with it. He chuckled and sat up, leaning down to pick up his shirt from the floor and shrug it back on. It was quiet for a few moments as they searched for their clothing before he cleared his throat “Hey what are you doing later? We could do something, dinner or…something.” He said hopefully.
She smiled and shook her head “I can’t tonight.” She said pulling her shirt back on “Me and Harper are going to that carnival by the cabin.”
“Oh.” She heard him sound mildly disappointed but then a hopeful “Hmmmm.” afterwards. When she turned he was smiling mischievously and held his hands up and shrugged “Wouldn’t it be such a funny coincidence if me and Svechy just happened to be there?”
Maddie paused, smiling and nodded in understanding “It would be pretty funny. Hypothetically of course.”
He looked confused and nodded slowly eyes squinted “I-I don’t know what that means but agreed. So maybe I’ll see you. Hypo-whatever you said.”
She shook her head and looked at him incredulously “Your parents are teachers. It means- Nevermind maybe I’ll see you then.” Madison giggled and leaned up to kiss him, and watched as he walked down the hall, went down the stairs and out the front door. She fell back in bed and eyes slid closed, as she smiled dreamily. It had been everything she could have dreamed of.
But it was cut short when she heard the door open and close. She listened to the footsteps as they moved across the floor.
Harper.
Maddie hopped up and made her way out into the hall and down the main stairs. She would have trouble keeping what just happened from Harper, but she would do it anyway. She would tell her when the time was right.
Harper was pushing her running shoes off her feet by the door and glanced up to see Maddie as she came down the steps. She was soaked in sweat, a thick ring of it around the neckline of her shirt, and spots had soaked through her shirt, but she was smiling which was already a vast improvement from this morning. Maddie grinned. “How was your run? Feeling better?”
Harper nodded and brushed a hair off her face that had fallen out of her ponytail “Much better. Great idea Mads. I stayed out as long as I could.”
Maddie glanced at the clock “53 minutes on the nose. Impressive. I would have died within the first 10. You’ve achieved a level of cardio I could never. I’m just glad it helped. It helped right?”
Harper pulled a bottle of water from the fridge and let out a long breath “I feel great. As soon as I drink this I’m gonna go shower, you still wanna go right?”
“No actually I changed my mind. I don’t wanna hang out with your depressed ass anymore.” Harper made a face at her and Maddie giggled “Duh. Nothing says summer quite like cheap beer and carnival rides. We’ve got time so no rush.” Maddie was so excited to spend time with Harper outside of unpacking boxes and sitting by the pool. It had been so long since they’d done something fun, Maddie couldn’t wait to get her out of the house for it. If a janky carnival was what it took then she would go to 100 of them.
Harper was looking at her over the water bottle and nodded before she wiped sweat off her forehead “So what were you doing while I was gone?”
Madison shrugged and smiled “Nothing really. Just thinking.”
“About anything special? The boy next door maybe?” Harper leaned forward and batted her eyelashes and Maddie smiled.
“Nooooo. Why? Were you thinking about anyone special? The other boy next door maybe?” She mirrored her eyelash batting and Harper grinned.
“Noooo. I’m going to shower.” She said giving Maddie a shoulder bump as she passed her.
“To think about Andrei.” Maddie shimmied her shoulders at Harper and she snorted out a small laugh.
“Ew!” She said looking at her over her shoulder “No!”
Maddie smiled “Might as well. I’m sure he’s thinking about you in there!” She called as Harper made her way up the stairs.
“MADISON.”

Harper came flying into the kitchen like the house was on fire the next morning startling Madison at the island while she was eating a bowl full of watermelon. She watched, amused as Harper stumbled around the kitchen attempting to make an iced coffee, spilling it twice and dropping ice on the floor.
She blew her hair out of her face and turned to her “I won’t be home till after dinner, running club tonight so don’t worry about me-“ she caught her in a hug before hurrying out the door.
Madison chuckled and yelled goodbye as she heard the door slam and her sisters footsteps descend the front stairs. The house was quiet and Madison stretched deciding she’d sit by the pool a while with her sketchbook, as she stepped off the stool and spotted Harper’s coffee on the counter.
“Shit.” She hissed and snatched it, hurrying out of the kitchen to the door, and then down the front steps, to find that Harper was still in the driveway and she was not alone.
Seth and his teammate, Anthony or something like that, were in the driveway with her sister who looked more than annoyed.
Madison stopped and looked down, suddenly self conscious about the fact that she had a pair of tiny sleep shorts, no shoes and a tshirt on, and turned to hand her sister the coffee clearing her throat awkwardly, but Harper seemed not to notice and smiled with relief “You’re a lifesaver, Mads” she sighed and took the coffee before turning to Seth and whatever his name was in the driveway, to continue what she had been saying.
“I work today, but Maddie here, she’s free all day.” She moved to get into the front seat of her car, but paused “By the way Maddie, this is Seth’s friend. Andrew”
”Andrei” He corrected, and Maddie shared a glance with Seth stifling a giggle, knowing that her sister had 100% done that on purpose. She crossed one leg over the other and tugged her T-shirt down attempting to cover herself a little and turned as Harper continued ”Right. You three, should do something-” her sister suggested and put on her sunglasses before offering them a wave and leaving the three of them in the driveway.
Maddie was grinning as she watched her sister zoom down the street before she turned to them.
“She’s sweeter than she seems trust me.”
Seth laughed and turned to Andrei “This is Madison, Harper’s sister. Mads, this is Andrei.” She shook his extended hand and he gave her what she assumed was his best smile. A smile that got him anything he wanted, but it wasn’t working on her.
“Nice to meet you. Your sister is very beautiful, and now I see it runs in the family.”
Maddie chuckled and crossed her arms “Your very smooth Andrei. But your right. My sister is very beautiful, kind…and single.” She said quietly, turning to Seth and waggling her eyebrows.
“Remind me of her job again? She’s a-?” Andrei asked, glancing at the U-Haul still in the driveway.
“Physiotherapist.” Madison said with a small smile “She’ll be there all day, and then she’s going running after work…it’s like a club…” she smiled and turned to walk into the house before she called over her shoulder “That you have to sign up for online. Have fun!” She made a move to walk into the house but Andrei saw a window of opportunity closing fast. Her tagging along with them had two benefits. One for Seth and one for himself.
“Hey!” She turned, hair spilling over her shoulder “You should come golfing with us.”
She raised an eyebrow and looked at Seth “I don’t golf.”
“Come on!” He said slapping Seth on the chest “It’ll be fun. Right?”
Seth was looking at him puzzled before he turned to her “Definitely. You should come.” Seth’s brows were pulled low over his forehead and he had his lips pursed.
She thought it over for a second and took a step up on to her porch, foot braced on the step “I need like 20 minutes.”
She disappeared inside and Seth turned to him frowning “Svech I-“ but he waved his hand to stop him “Relax buddy. I invited her for you not me. I like the other one.”
Seth rolled his eyes and shoved him “Shutup.” He mumbled. He wouldn’t admit it, but Andrei had heard the disappointment in his voice yesterday when he asked about her sudden absence in the driveway, and he’d seen him inadvertently straighten up when she’d come out the front door. Since he was apparently too scared to do it on his own, Andrei would do it for him. Plus he figured it wouldn’t hurt to get some more details on her sister.
40 minutes later they were out on the golf course. Andrei was sure Seth was going to throw up when Maddie descended her front steps in a short black skirt and a white polo, long hair hanging loose asking if it was golf appropriate, and he stumbled over his words for a second before Andrei saved him.
“You look great. So good Seth’s speechless.”
Seth glared at him as she chuckled and slid into the backseat of Seth’s car and they backed out of the driveway and made their way to the golf course.
The sun was shining down on them as Seth attempted to show her how to hit a golf ball correctly. She was looking at him like he was speaking another language, leaning on a golf club with one hand and holding a drink full of pink liquid in the other.
“Get it?” Seth asked.
“No. But let’s try it anyway.” She downed the rest of her drink and set the cup on the fender of the golf cart.
Andrei watched as she made her way to the ball, and shook her hair out. She was beautiful, and he should have been into her. She should have been enough of a distraction for him but she wasn’t.
Now Seth on the other hand.
Seth had it bad. He hadn’t said it out loud but he didn’t have to. It was all over his face as he watched her hit the ball, eyes moving up her legs more than once. They were cute, and he liked seeing Seth so happy, but it made him realize he was third wheeling.
While she was focused mostly on Seth and keeping things as natural and normal as they typically were with him, she was more than curious about Andrei.
Who was he? Why was he here? Why did her sister seem to hate him so much?
Madison knew why. The smile on his face when she’d seen him fawning over Harper in the driveway told the story of why her sister was being uncharacteristically rude to him. He seemed nice enough, oozed charm and was exactly the type of guy who would send Harper running for the hills.
She watched as he fiddled around on his phone apparently deep in thought until Seth tapped her shoe with the golf club.
“Are you paying attention? I’m trying to teach you something here.”
She turned to him and shook her head “I wasn’t really.”
She noticed a ghost of a frown cross his face as he looked at her and then Andrei behind her and before he could say anything else she cut him off “No I wasn’t if that’s what you were thinking.”
He shrugged “I wasn’t gonna-“
“You were. But it’s not like that. Trust me.”
Seth didn’t say anything but Maddie knew where his mind was. Even if she had an interest in Andrei she’d be barking up the wrong tree. He had practically flooded the driveway with drool this morning over Harper and Madison would never compete with her sister and she didn’t want to. It was nice actually that Andrei didn’t look at her like she was a piece of meat like most the guys she’d dated or hung out with. He just looked at her like she was a living breathing human being who had thoughts, and feelings. Like Seth always had. Normally it would have annoyed her that he even said anything, but this time it gave her some hope. If he cared, that she was interested in Andrei maybe it meant he liked her. He’d never said a word about any guy before. Maybe that walk last night had been good for them.
She was jarred from her thoughts however when she heard Andrei behind her “So, your sister, she doesn’t like me. Yes?”
Maddie turned and looked at him evenly but she had a small smile on her face “Now why would you think that.” She turned her head to the side, eyes twinkling mischievously.
Andre scoffed “She knew my name wasn’t Andrew.”
Maddie giggled and watched Seth switch clubs before turning back to him “You caught that? It’s not that she doesn’t like you, Harper’s just been through a lot.”
“Like?” He wanted to know more, everything he could about her. Her favorite things, music, hobbies, thoughts ideas all of it. But Madison shook her head.
“I’d love to fill you in, but that’s Harper’s story to tell. For context her ex is an asshole and she just moved back home. She’s still a little fragile right now, so if she comes across a being rude it’s because she’s still hurting.”
“Who’s an asshole?” Seth asked as he made his way over. He leaned around Madison to check his phone and Andrei didn’t miss how he went out of his way to brush against her, one hand on her arm.
“Darren. Your friend here has a thing for my sister.” She patted Andrei on the arm and moved past him towards the cart with a smile, and Andrei saw a flash of Harper for a second, and hoped he would be able to see a real genuine smile from her one day.
Seth shrugged “Not surprising. Everyone’s had a thing for your sister.”
She paused and half turned eyebrows raised, as he quickly corrected himself “Not me though. I’ve never liked your sister. That would be, uh- weird.”
“Yeah cuz she’s the wrong sister.” Svech said lowly from behind him.
Seth aimed a backwards punch at him as Madison leaned against the cart, arms folded, crossing her legs at the ankle “Harper can be complicated, but she’s worth it. She’s got a lot going on, but these last few days I’ve started to see the old Harper more and more. She’s healing, and faster than I think anyone expected. She’ll come around. You just have to get to know her.”
“I want to but she’s making it really difficult.”
Madison laughed and looked at Seth “Guess that means you have your work cut out for you. Now who’s taking me for a ride.” She glanced between them jingling the keys in her hand.
**********
Maddie had just gotten out of the shower when she heard her phone buzzing.
She’d gotten home only a half an hour before and felt like she’d been out in the heat for three years. Whether she was sweaty from that or Seth she wasn’t sure but either way a shower had been in order.
She glanced at the phone to find a message from her sister and smiled
H:Sorry I threw you to the wolves earlier
M:Haha it’s okay. I get it. Besides, it gave me an excuse to spend some time with Seth.
H:Are you at least having a good day?
M:It’s okay. It wasn’t bad. He’s a nice guy, and he sure likes you.
H:Kid got to spend the whole day with you and he still asked about me? I don't get why.
Maddie rolled her eyes. Andrei had exactly zero sexual or romantic interest in her and either Harper didn’t notice or was being purposely ignorant.
M:I think “kid” likes his women a little older, and is smart enough to know I’m not interested. Or maybe my charm isn’t what it used to be. Either way he asked lots of questions. He must have a cougar complex. And he looked really good in that golf shirt. Just sayin. And don’t pretend you didn’t notice.
H:Don't encourage it, okay? Nice or not, he’s not my type.
M:If that’s your story.
H:Besides, I don't think I'm ready for anything with anyone right now. Today's been tough.
M:You know what they say Harper. To get over someone, get under someone else.
She could practically see Harper’s face on the other end of the phone and started laughing.
H:Mads! That's horrible. I'm going to pretend I didn't just read that. Love you lots. Have to get back to work.
M:Hahahahha. Don’t act like it didn’t make you smile. Have a good day. Don’t think about Andrei too much. Love you!
Curiosity it seemed had gotten the better of her big sister. Maddie giggled and grabbed the phone, wrapped her towel around herself and headed to her room. She sat on her bed and took a deep breath. She was exhausted from the golfing, even though she gave up around the 9th hole and mostly watched.
She glanced up and froze.
From her window she could see clear into Seth’s room, and was both surprised and delighted to find him shirtless, rummaging through a drawer. She stayed there, not wanting to move so he didn’t notice she was looking, and felt her face and body burn up as she watched him find whatever he was looking for. He left his room, presumably to go shower himself and Madison let out a long breath.
She was going to need another shower.
**********
“So Madison?” Andrei asked later on when it was just them.
“What about her?” Seth said offhandedly. They’d dropped Madison off a while ago, having spent the afternoon with her. He liked her a lot, and he could see why Seth did as well. She was easy to talk to and seemed like a fun time, and by the end of the afternoon she and him were like old friends talking and laughing like they’d known each other for years. She’d left them with a wave and smile, and Seth had been avoiding talking about her since then no matter how many times Andrei brought her up. And it had been a lot.. Andrei could tell he was a little apprehensive probably because Madison wasn’t just any girl. She was a girl who had been a pretty prominent figure in his life for the duration of it. Things could get tricky for all involved.
“You know what.”
Seth smiled and gave a little chuckle “She’s my neighbor. We grew up together. Her sister was my babysitter.”
“What does any of that have to do with anything? I know you like her.”
Seth shrugged “Of course I do. She’s my friend.”
“Yeah that’s not what I meant.” Andrei said shaking his head. There was no such thing as having an argument with Seth. He’d learned long ago that trying to get him to admit something he didn’t want to would be impossible, even if it was already known, and Seth wasn’t giving this up too easy. Andrei had only heard Madison mentioned now and again in passing and now he could understand why Seth didn’t bring her up very often. There was some underlying tension that Andrei knew nothing about. But he’d be damned if he wasn’t going to find out.
Seth rolled his eyes “Even if hypothetically I did like her, I don’t think she feels the same.”
“Why? You two spent the day attached at the hip. And she laughed at all your dumb jokes. She wouldn’t do that if she didn’t like you.”
“First of all.” Seth said pointing at him “You can fuck right off. My jokes are hilarious. And second of all you laughed at them too so what’s that say about you?”
Andrei chuckled to himself but continued “So never anything between you two?” He’d never been so invested in someone else's non relationship, relationship but he had never seen Seth so worked up and he needed to know more. He had friends who were girls, but never a girl friend that close or one who he had feelings buried under the surface for. Plus it was a welcome distraction from his constant thoughts about Harper.
“I mean I kissed her once.” Seth said casually, glancing down as he pulled at a hangnail.
Andrei whipped around mouth falling open “When?!”
“6th grade spin the bottle.” Seth was smiling but Andrei was looking at him puzzled “You know spin the-No? Everyone sits in a circle and spins a bottle and whoever it-You know what. Never mind. It was a stupid 6th grade thing.” He said waving him off.
“How stupid can it be if you remember it still.”
He looked at the ceiling in thought “True I guess. I don’t know things seem weird with her lately.”
“What do you mean?”
Seth paused a second before he spoke. Andrei was seeing a different side of Seth that he’d never seen before. The Seth he knew was wild and fun, and rarely took life or himself too seriously, but this Seth seemed hesitant and serious. Andrei suspected Madison knew both sides, and she was the only one to bring this one out of its shell.
Seth cleared his throat and chose his words carefully “Last summer right before I left we got in a…it wasn’t a fight, but an argument I guess and then I didn’t really talk with her like I usually do when I’m gone. And now it’s just different. Like the vibe is off if you know what I mean? I’ve never felt weird around her but now it seems like things have changed.”
“Changed how?”
Seth looked at the ceiling in thought “Uhm I don’t know. I mean it was weird when she left the driveway yesterday right?”
Andrei shrugged. He’d been so entranced by Harper he had almost forgotten about Maddie’s mysterious disappearance from the driveway the day prior. But now that Seth had mentioned it, it was definitely weird.
He shrugged “Sure. Did you ask her about it?”
Seth shook his head “No. I’m kind of afraid to ask.”
Andrei stuffed his feet in his shoes “Maybe you should talk to her.”
“I’ll talk to her when you talk to Harper.” Seth was grinning ear to ear. He thought it was both hilarious and unexpected that Svech had fully committed to pursue Harper, who should be getting ready to get married, and Seth was secretly pining over Madison his lifelong friend and Harper’s younger sister. The summer had barely started and it was already full of surprises.
Andrei scowled and pointed at the clock “What do you think we’re going to do? After that it’s your turn.”
Seth rolled his eyes and stood, grabbing his keys and made his way outside “Come on creepy. Let’s go stalk my neighbor.”
***********
“Do you remember spin the bottle? 6th grade?”
Maddie and Seth were sitting by the pool in the dark sometime later. She’d seen Harper in passing when she got home from running club, both surprised and not surprised that Seth and Andrei had actually shown up, and she’d been in her room since then. Harper called it decompression time and Maddie found herself making her way out to the pool to do some decompression and thinking of her own. A short while later she felt someone looking at her and turned to see Seth at his window. She waved him down and now they had been sitting in comfortable silence together for a bit.
She turned and smiled, half of her face in shadow “Of course I remember. Why?”
He shrugged “Just curious. I remember I was so psyched about kissing you.”
“What? Stop it.” She waved a hand and rolled her eyes. She did remember it, like it was yesterday and she was surprised he did too. It had been so long ago now she was sure that it was buried amongst all the other girls he’d kissed since then.
He looked offended that she waved him off “No I was. You were like the most popular girl in school then, and well for the rest of the time we were in school after that, and I got to kiss you. Top ten coolest things that have ever happened.”
“Got to kiss me first.” She corrected.
“Wait what.” He turned to her fully “What do you mean?””
She was smiling as she watched the water cast reflections across the pool. She was beautifully illuminated by the blue light from the water as she turned to him and spoke “You were my first kiss.”
His mouth fell open and he let out a breath “Are you kidding.”
“Is that surprising?”
“Of course it is. Guys have always been crazy about you, even in 6th grade.”
She shrugged “ I don’t know about that.” He nudged her “Come on.You know it’s true. You’ve always been smart funny and from my recollection you were always the prettiest, most popular girl at school.”
She felt her face get red and giggled “You have such a way with words.”
“It’s true. And those aren’t my words, I’m just repeating what every friend I’ve ever had has said to me. Everyone I’ve ever known.”
“That can’t be true. If it was I’d have a lot more boyfriends than I did.”
“Not a single one of them were ever good enough. And dating is overrated anyways. That’s why I ended things with Kristen-“
“Who?” She asked cutting him off, she was looking at him blankly.
“This girl I dated in North Carolina off and on, she-“
Something he wasn’t familiar with flickered across Madison’s face and he could tell she was immediately uncomfortable and he stopped talking “What?” She asked quietly. She wasn’t looking at him, but rather staring across the darkest part of her backyard.
“What?” He leaned forward looking at her questioningly.
She chuckled and pursed her lips “Okay.” She pulled herself angrily to her feet and turned to walk away from him.
“Woah wait. What’s the-“
“Save it Seth.” She snapped turning to face him “You can’t do that okay?”
“Do what?” He was so confused about why she was so upset.
“You can’t sit here and tell me about being psyched about kissing me, and that I’m pretty and then turn around and tell me about a girl you dated in North Carolina.”
“Madison-“
“It’s not fair to me.” She was getting dangerously close to professing her feelings to him right there in the backyard but she didn’t care. She wasn’t going to put herself through this for the whole summer. It was barely even June she still had two and a half months of this left.
“I didn’t know it would upset you-I just-I don’t know why it is even upsetting you?”
Madison felt tears prick at her eyes and she let her head fall backwards “Really Seth? You don’t. If you don’t know why I’m upset then I guess you don’t really know me as well as you thought you did.” He continued to stare at her blankly until she spoke again “I’m jealous okay? Jealous of the girl in North Carolina, jealous of that girl last summer. Can you not see that?” She just didn’t care anymore. She couldn’t keep it to herself any longer. It was better to be honest and risk whatever was about to happen than run the risk of having to watch him meet someone. At least if it blew up in her face she wouldn’t have to see that.
“I had no idea-How was I supposed to know that?”
Madison crossed her arms and looked at him sadly “You just are.”
She turned to walk away but he caught her by the elbow spinning her around “Wait I-“ He leaned forward a little.
“Don’t.” She leaned away from him “Don’t just kiss me because I said all that, I don’t need a pity kiss I-”
Seth moved right in not bothering to go slow and pressed his lips against hers. She kissed him back, hands coming up to grip his shirt and pull him closer as they stood kissing in the backyard between their two houses. A yard they’d spent their whole lives in.
He pulled away and came back in at a new angle, sweeping his tongue across her lower lip, and she opened her mouth. This was way better than in the 6th grade. Had it not been for the grip on his shirt and his hands on her waist she would have passed out and fallen over, but he held her in place. Her heart was beating so loud it was drowning out everything else as they stood kissing under the stars. It was everything she’d been dreaming for the 10 months. When he pulled away they stood staring at each other.
“Are you still jealous?” He asked quietly giving her waist a squeeze.
“Do you still wanna date Kristen?”
“Who?” He asked with a smile “All I know is I wanna kiss you again.”
“I thought you’d never ask.”

“Harper?” Madison knocked three times at her sisters door before she heard a muffled “Come in”
She eased in just in time to see Harper hurriedly wiping her eyes to cover up that she’d been crying.
Madison plastered a smile on her face and pretended not to notice.
“Hey what’s up?” Harper smiled at her and put a hand on either side of her hips. Her attempt at a coverup would have fooled anyone else, maybe even their dad, but not Madison.
The room around them was half filled with moving boxes, the beginnings of a bed frame, parts stacked neatly in piles, and several boxes of clothes and hangers were opened and being sorted through.
Though it was through unfortunate circumstances, Madison was thrilled to have her older sister back home with them. After the death of their mom, Harper had practically raised Madison and the bond they had was deep. But it had been under quite a bit of strain in recent years. Harper’s boyfriend, Darren, had taken over her life for the last 6 years, turning it inside out. Madison never understood why she let him, and slowly but surely he started to isolate her from her family like all the best narcissists and abusers do. It hurt her and her dad, and for a long time Madison was angry that she would let him come between them like that. After 6 years though, she finally had enough and left Darren, moving back home.
Harper had handled it well on the outside.
But sometimes at night Madison could hear her crying when she thought everyone was asleep, and it broke her heart. She never wanted her sister to feel that way. No one should, but Harper was the best person she knew, and she had been abused by the worst person she knew. It blew her mind that a guy who was so obviously dating up could treat her sister like anything less than gold. And yet here she was at 27, moving back to their childhood home because he had done just that.
“Do you need help?” Madison asked seating herself on a spinning chair and scooching forward on its wheels “You have a lot to unpack and this isn’t even half.”
“No, it’s fine.” She waved her hand to try to dismiss her, “I can do it. I need to decide what I need, what I can give away and what I can store until I can get my own place again-” Harper leaned forward to pick up a box but Madison put a hand on the top, holding it in place.
They stared at each other for a second before Madison spoke quietly.
“You don’t have to do everything alone, you know? Let me help you.”
Harper’s lip trembled a little, as she looked around the room to try to avoid her looking at her. She was never one to ask for help, but was always the first to help her little sister with anything. But she nodded, with a heavy sigh “Okay.”
They smiled at each bother before they busied themselves unpacking. It was quiet at first, but soon enough they were laughing and giggling like little girls.
It was so nice to have her back.
“I think this is everything I can store but there’s still boxes of clothing in the moving truck.” Harper said.
Madison stood and followed her sister through the house and out the front door.
It was hot out, and the birds were chirping as Madison climbed inside the truck and made her way to the boxes in the back, glancing around.
“This box?” Madison said pulling it off a stack of other boxes inside the truck.
“Yes. It has all my running clothes in it.” Harper called from the driveway. Madison adjusted her grip on it and made her way out of the truck, down the ramp and into the driveway and paused when she heard a car door slam.
“Hey!” Harper said brightly “Seth’s home!”
Madison froze as she heard her sister call to him and him respond. She took one look at him, and some random yet very good looking guy with him, and felt weak in the knees. She dropped the box and ran as fast as she could inside the house, and up the steps into her bedroom, slamming the door and sliding down it.
She had completely forgotten about him coming home with everything else that was going on, and she did not want to see him. She, Harper and Seth had grown up together, spending summers playing in the pool, going to the park and creating many childhood memories. She couldn’t remember not knowing Seth or the Jarvis’s.
He’d been in her life for most of her most significant events, from childhood to teen years, around for birthdays, holidays, summers and hockey season and in all those 19 years prior that’s how it had been.
But Madison’s view of her childhood friend had changed in the last year.
And the last time she’d seen him they’d parted on weird terms, something she’d been keeping to herself over the last year.
Outside Harper had made her way across the lawn to greet him. Madison couldn’t hear the details of their conversation as her bedroom window faced the backyard, but she did distinctly hear Seth ask for her, and Harper’s response.
“Uh? I don’t know she was just right here.”
Madison felt bad then. Why was she like this? She’d panicked and taken off and now she hadn’t been able to see Seth, but she wasn’t sure if she even wanted to see Seth. But Seth wanted to see her. This was so confusing.
She listened to the muffled version of whatever they were talking about and then the voices died out, and not long after she heard the door open and her sister’s footsteps coming up the stairs.
“Mads?” She heard Harper’s voice outside before the door cracked open and she slipped inside
“What was that all about?” Harper looked mildly concerned and while Madison appreciated it, she didn’t want to burden her sister with this when she had real problems. She continued to sketch, pushing on the pencil harder than necessary. Sketching had always been her escape, but now it was doing nothing but giving her anxiety. Harper continued to stare at her but she didn’t look up from her desk “What? I have no idea what you're talking about.”
“Madison.”
“Harper.”
“You can’t hide shit from me, you know that. I know something is wrong.”
Madison smiled “You always were the smart one.”
“Smart? Sure, but that’s got nothing to do with it. I know you, and what happened outside, that’s not your normal.”
Madison shrugged, but Harper wasn’t giving up and continued to stare at her until she sighed.
“Fine. Can we keep this between us though?”
Harper was sitting on her bed, hands in her lap and nodded before Madison continued.
“Last summer things got kind of…weird I guess? We were at this party right before he left for camp and he was with some girl and it just pissed me off and we had a fight.”
Harper sat there for a moment, fiddling with her fingernails before she spoke hesitantly, “Was that fight with Seth because you were jealous?”
“No. I was just mad he was with another girl.”
“That’s what jealousy is, Mads.”
Madison blew out a breath “Whatever. So yeah. I’m just not ready to see him yet.” She was looking at her feet.
“Holy shit, Madison, are you telling me that you like Seth?” Harper was fighting a smile.
Madison ran her teeth across her lower lip and looked at her “I think so. I mean why else would I get upset like that if I didn’t, right?”
It had been a long time since Madison liked someone like that and it scared her. And it wasn’t a good look either that she liked him and he didn’t like her.
“Right,” Harper chuckled, “I baby sat both of you for such a long time, and I would have never guessed it’d come to that. Maybe I’m not as good of a sister as I thought I was…Do you think he likes you?”
Madison shrugged “Last time I checked the answer was no. And don’t say that. You’re a great sister.”
“That was last summer though. It could be different now. He’s had a whole season away and a lot of time to think about how things ended between you guys.” Harper was smiling at her encouragingly, but it was honestly the last thing she wanted to do.
“Maybe.”
“Talking to him might help things, or at the very least put things at ease between the two of you. And if he doesn’t know, he can’t act on any feelings he might also have, you know? I’m sure you don’t want my advice though. Not exactly a love expert these days.”
Madison frowned and her eyebrows came together “I always want your advice. You’re the smartest person I know. Don’t ever think for one second that I don’t value what you say or want your opinion.” She frowned at her before a mischievous smile started to make its way across her face “Bitch.”
They started laughing and Harper reached for her to pull her into a hug “You’re smart, kind, and beautiful, Mads. If a guy can’t see that then he’s dumb and not worth your time. And that still applies even if it’s Seth. Guy should know how amazing you are by now.”
“You are also smart, kind and beautiful big sister, and someday a guy will see that. Like that hottie in the driveway WHO was that?!”
Harper glanced at her “He’s Seth’s teammate, Andrei I think-” but she stopped and cleared her throat before she stood “Anyways, I have some boxes to unpack in the basement. I’ll be there if you need me.”
Harper gave her a smile, a kiss on the crown of her head, and told her she would be ordering food and then she left. Madison laid down heavily across her bed and let out a huff.
Now that she’d said it out loud, it didn’t seem so unrealistic that she liked Seth. She’d known him forever, one of the few people who had been in her life the whole time this far, and she was surprised actually that it had taken this long for feelings to develop for at least one of them. She just wished it wasn’t her, or at the very least just her.
She sighed and rolled over, eyes closing.
She had no idea what she was doing, and she was on the verge of ruining her friendship with him. Seth was nice and approachable and had never been afraid to talk to girls. She’d seen it first hand every summer and could only imagine what went on North Carolina. She didn’t even wanna think about it. Relationships were something they never really talked about. She’d dated casually but never had a serious long term relationship, and now that she’d seen what happened to her sister she wasn’t so sure she wanted one. Not that Seth was like Darren, he definitely was not, but the collapse of her sister's engagement and future had shown her that people you love can’t always be trusted to love you back.
Last summer she’d had a fit about him even hanging out with a girl, and her feelings only got bigger during his absence. They partied together pretty much every summer since they were old enough to be without the supervision of her sister, and she was sure he was anticipating that again. She wasn’t so sure she could deal with seeing him with any girls. But she didn’t want to cut him out either. And now he had this teammate next door with him, which was another story. She couldn’t be figuring out her own issues with an audience, one being her sister and the other a stranger.
She laid there for a long time, listening to the sounds of the day beginning to wind down. The sun had set and it was dusky outside when she made her way downstairs.
She needed her charger out of the car and she could vaguely hear Harper on the phone in the basement as she passed.
It had cooled off a little as she stepped outside, glancing over at Seth’s house, thankful he and his new roommate weren’t outside. She made her way to the car and was almost at the passenger door when she heard a voice.
“Madison?” She spun, nearly falling over to find herself face to face with Seth. Where the fuck had he come from? He smiled at her and reached forward to hug her. Her stomach was twisting in knots as she hugged him back, feeling herself stiffen. He didn’t seem to notice. She had thought since the sun was almost down, he and Andrei would either be out somewhere together or inside for the evening.
Apparently she was wrong.
“Seth hi.”
“I’ve missed you. Feels like it’s been forever.”
“Well it kind of has been.”
He was smiling at her and it made her weak in the knees. He glanced over his shoulder and gave her a nudge “Let’s go for a walk. I wanna catch up.”
Madison wanted to say no, but she also wanted to say yes. She nodded and followed him. It was quiet a second before he spoke.
“I was surprised to see Harper back home.” He glanced over his shoulder at the moving truck as they made their way down the street.
“Your not the only one. They broke off the engagement.” Madison smiled widely and Seth started laughing.
“You seem crushed. What happened?”
“My sister finally got tired of taking a backseat. She put her whole life on hold for him, and he treated her like dirt. And my understanding of the whole situation is that he had a nasty temper. She just showed up one day, and then never actually left. She should have left him years ago. The guys worthless and an asshole.”
He nodded “I didn’t really know him, but I’m Team Harper always. I’m sure your dad is happy to have him out of the picture. Both his girls back under the same roof.”
“I think it’s Darren who should be happy my dad hasn’t gotten a hold of him yet. But yeah. He’s really glad she’s back.” She smiled a little.
Seth chuckled and nodded, hands in his pockets “So other than all that how are things? It’s been a while.” He trailed off, glancing over. The air around them got awkward for a second as Madison nodded, pursed her lips, and felt a sinking feeling of guilt “Yeah…I’ve just been really busy with school and stuff.”
Typically they kept in pretty regular contact during the season, but this one had been different. They’d ended on a weird note last August and contact had been somewhat limited since then, and though she missed him a lot, she didn’t want her feelings to get out of control, like they did the last time she’d seen him.
Madison felt a small twinge of annoyance as she watched Seth rest an arm around whatever her names shoulder, smile across his face.
Seth had been her friend forever, and she had always seen him as such. But the minute she’d spotted him smiling at that stupid girl, a feeling she was pretty sure was jealousy came raging out from somewhere deep inside. Her feelings towards him had changed this summer, and if she was being honest it had been happening the last 3 summers. 3 years of feelings for your best friend changing would take a toll on anyone’s nerves. By luck or fate she hadn’t had to jump the hurdle of seeing him with someone else yet. So now that she did, she felt like she was going to throw up.
She was drumming her fingers across the top of the glass table she was sitting at, thankful the sun had gone down so the angry flush on her cheeks couldn’t be seen. She stood, fully prepared to slip out before anyone noticed but she turned to leave and nearly knocked into Seth, and the girl he was holding hands with.
“Hey. I’ve been looking for you.”
“For what?” She crossed her arms, ignoring the girl and took a step away from him.
“This is-“
“Yeah I know.” Madison snapped with an eye roll, not even glancing in her direction. She scowled at Seth, downed the remainder of her drink and tossed the cup in the trash, pushing past him and making her way across the lawn and out the front to where her car was parked. She was blazing mad as she neared her car keys in hand.
“Hey.”
She half turned to find Seth himself had followed her out.
“What?”
“What’s your problem?” He looked confused as to why she was giving him the cold shoulder and why she was suddenly leaving.
“I don’t have a problem, I just wanna go home.” Madison made a move to open the car door but he blocked her way. She frowned up at him “Can you move please? Shouldn’t you be hanging out with your girlfriend.” She spat the word out like it was poison and he was surprised at her tone. Madison had always been carefree, fun and unbelievably kind. But this was a Madison he had never seen before.
“She’s not my girlfriend.” He said with a small chuckle.
“Whatever. I don’t care.”
She pulled open the door but he reached across and shut it, leaning down to look at her “Kind of seems like you care.”
Madison sighed and closed her eyes “Please let go of my door. I wanna go home.” She avoided his gaze because she felt like she might cry, and sucked in a breath through her nose, bottom lip trembling a little.
It was silly to expect that like a movie he would look at her one day and maybe notice her for the first time after knowing her this long. She had set herself up to fail from the start.
He huffed and pushed off the car allowing her get in and he watched as she pulled away from the curb. The minute she turned the corner she let loose a river of hot tears that ran down her cheeks and neck, staining her shirt. She cried the whole way home, thankful to see the lights off which meant she would be able to cry in peace without alarming her dad, who was most likely on night shift. She let herself in, pulled her wet shirt off and a dry one on, laid down on her bed and closed her eyes.
She spent much of the next day in her room. Her dad had gotten home in the early hours and had eaten and gone straight to bed, her sister was working and not living at home, and it was too hot to go outside.
She was absently sketching at her desk when she heard a knock at the door.
With an eye roll and a sigh she made her way down the steps and through the house, pulling the door open to find Seth on the other side. She tensed up, blood rushing to her face.
He gave her a small smile “I didn’t wanna leave without saying goodbye.” He looked down at his feet.
She had forgotten he was leaving today, and she realized that she had ruined the night before, and he would be in North Carolina till next June. After last night she felt dumb and embarrassed but she cleared her throat. She would be without him 9 months at the earliest, and later if they went all the way through playoffs. She was still upset, but she wouldn’t let that ruin the last time she saw him.
“Well. Goodbye. I hope the season goes well.”
He bit his lip. She wasn’t sure if she should hug him or not. She hadn’t left on good terms with him the night before and she felt awkward around him now. But he reached forward and hugged her, pulling her tightly to him, off the front step. He had one hand on her back, and reached the other one up to rest on the back of her head, hand moving over her hair.
“This goodbye feels different.” He said from above her “Like I’m not going to see you again.”
“I’m not going anywhere. I’m sure I’ll be right here when you get back.”
He let her go, hands sliding to her waist “Are we okay? Last night-“
“Yeah sorry about that- I just-rough day is all.”
He was still frowning, still holding her waist and she was trying so hard to not kiss the daylights out of him. It would have been so easy to do it. To just get it over with before he left. To give him something to think about for the next 9 months, and maybe just maybe spark something. But she didn’t. She stayed rooted to where she was, hoping she wasn’t about to start crying.
“You would tell me if something was wrong right?”
She nodded, looking at his chest before she spoke “Of course I would.”
He nodded and gave her waist a squeeze before he made his way off the porch, across the lawn and to where he was parked.
He paused at his car and gave her a small wave which she returned, before he backed out of the driveway. She leaned on the doorframe watching as he drove down the street and turned, car moving out of sight. She sighed and let her head fall against the frame.
It was going to be a long few months.
“Yeah I’ve heard. My mom kind of keeps me in the loop while I’m gone, but she says your doing great. Fashion design is perfect for you. Your art skills have always been insane.”
Madison nodded and fiddled with a lock of hair “Stop stop. Don’t make me blush.” He was same old Seth. Warm, inviting and exactly how she remembered him. His hair was long now, hanging in his eyes and down the back of his neck, and he looked bigger than the last time she’d seen him, but he was still just Seth.
He however did not feel the same.
It was like he was seeing her for the first time. She was so familiar yet completely different to him. He’d never noticed the blue of her eyes, the way her hair caught the light, and the slow stretch of her smile when she laughed. All the things he’d never noticed about her before were now too hard to ignore. He’d always loved Madison, but this wasn’t the same feeling he’d had before. This was different. These were real, genuine feelings he was feeling and they had completely caught him off guard. He couldn’t believe it had taken him so many years to actually see her.
As they made their way down the street and around the block they fell back into easy conversation and by the time they made it back to their driveways they were laughing and joking like always. After almost a year without her, and irregular conversation it felt nice to see her again. More than ever before maybe.
Seth followed her up to the porch and she turned to him.
“This was nice.” She said quietly, leaning back against the pillar under the porch roof. She was half in shadow, half lit by the pathway lights leading to the front door. He’d stood on her porch hundreds of times, but today it felt exceptionally small.
He wanted to kiss her so bad, and he wondered if she would let him but he stayed where he was and smiled instead.
“It was. Goodnight Mads. I’ll see you tomorrow?”
She nodded and smiled a real Madison smile that hit him a little more than it normally did “Sure. Goodnight Seth.”
He made his way across the yard pausing before he went inside. She was still standing on the porch, hand braced on the door handle watching him walk. She gave him a small smile and disappeared inside.
He made his way through his house and to his room quietly, careful not to wake anyone. Everyone’s lights were off as he passed by the doors, the sound of the air conditioning units humming being the only noise in the house. In his room he sat heavily on the end of his bed, and caught sight of the picture on the dresser of Madison, Harper and himself five summers ago, sitting on the back steps on the house their families rented each August, smiling widely. He was in the middle, Madison’s head resting on his shoulder, one of her arms looped in his, Harper hanging off the other shoulder, cheek pressed against the side of his head. To his recollection Harper had just met Darren, hockey had begun to get serious, and Madison would turn 16 the following month. It didn’t seem like that long ago, but things had really changed since then. Some for better some for worse, and some he wasn’t quite sure of yet.
He glanced out his window to the backyard, and could see a light on in Madison’s room just filtering through the curtains. He could make out her silhouette as it passed by the window once and then the lights turned out.
He smiled and laid back, arm propped behind his head, thinking about Madison until he fell asleep, wondering if she was thinking about him.

seth felt like his heart was gonna beat out of his chest, "are you sure you want to do this?" jesperi asked him for the 1000th time.
"i'm sure." he nodded, taking another deep breath to try and calm his fast-beating heart.
"all right, well get ready. she's almost here." he glanced down at jesperi's phone and saw the text message alerting them that you were on your way to the park with your friends.
"you go ahead. we'll get the stuff from the back." your friends told you. you nodded, completely oblivious to what was about to happen.
you furrowed your brows together in confusion, but smiled when you saw seth standing under a tree, "what're you doing here?"
"this is the exact spot when knew you were the one. it was after our third date, and we came out here because the sun hadn't set yet, so we came out here and watched it set."
"i remember." you nodded.
"in that very moment, that's when i knew i wanted to marry you." he walked closer, grabbing your hands, "you're it for me, we're endgame, i know it."
"i'm gonna keep it short, so y/n, will you-" he started to kneel.
"yes!" you shouted before he could finish.
"can i finish the question?" he laughed.
"right, sorry." you smiled.
"will you marry me?"
"yes!" you repeated. he got off the ground and cupped your face. you leaned in, the biggest smile on your face as your lips touched. you could feel seth smile in response to the kiss.
when you pulled away, you could hear the cheers from your friends who had helped seth with the proposal.
"you liars! you said we were gonna have a girls day." you laughed, pointing to your two friends.
"well, i think it's safe to say this is better than any other girls' day we've had." your friend laughed.
"this one's gonna be hard to beat."
taylor's night of neglect!
