I made myself an iron caddy. Saw it on Pinterest first, I think, there's a few tutorials around.

However, I couldn't find the appropriate material and set the project aside until I found an ironing board cover on clearance; it wasn't wide enough to follow the measurements on the tutorial so I kinda made it up as i went, using my iron as a guide.

I also made a matching cord wrap.

Hi folks! Long time no see. I've not been (and continue to not be) very well, and have also become a) weirdly in my head about drawing and b) increasingly disenchanted with Poasting About What I Make.

But I have been making things! Here's a finished object, a patchwork quilted couch caddy. 100% hand sewn.

And here it is in use.

So far the main downside to it is that I don't want to rest my coffee mug on the arm of my chair anymore bc I don't want it to get dirty.

Hey my library occasionally holds an event where people come to knit, crochet, sew, etc. items to be donated to those who need them - some of the items they suggests (to give people ideas) are pet beds, pet toys, wheelchair/walker caddies, fidget items, sensory blankets, lap blankets, and mug rugs.

Are there any other projects that y’all think could be good? I want to participate, and I want to see what all of my options are. I knit and crochet :)

The Trinity House Boxes

Trinity House Boxes were made by lighthouse and lightship keepers who served the lighthouse service during 1850- 1880. The story goes that these nautical boxes were made to be sold through the Trinity House Service to captains and crews who had used the services of a pilot or had supplied a lighthouse with materials. Most, are inlaid with tea clippers, lighthouses, flags, all kinds of marquetry, parquetry and simple string and inlay work.

They were made as tea caddies, work/sewing boxes, money boxes, writing boxes and storage boxes. All the boxes, are made of solid pine wood which was nailed and glued and then veneered with walnut, mahogany and rosewood. This additional and also expensive material was supplied with those of everyday use.

Originally, the finished boxes appear to have been delivered directly to Trinity House and sold there, with the cost of materials deducted. Later, it seems, the makers sold their work directly, and the cost of the wood seems to have been deducted from their wages.

The inner lids of these Trinity house boxes were in most cases decorated with velvet or paper and an ornate card border. Most have a colourfully printed card with animals, birds, flags, etc., probably chosen by the buyer to give the piece a personal touch.

Overall, these boxes were very popular and represented something special that no woman could call her own and thus they were a special gift from the captains and sailors who purchased them.

I finally finished reorganizing my workroom to deemphasize the computer work in favor of patterning and sewing. The only way to make this work was to move all the drawing and painting stuff to my bedroom, which means I'm now drawing whilst sitting on the floor like I did as a kid, but actually this is totally rad and really nice to get away from so much screen/desk time. I took a cue from my dyeing work and repurposed a plastic bin with a lid as a paint caddy so I can close everything messy and wet away quickly, and all my various painting/drying boards work well as drawing surfaces.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted so I have a bit of catching up to do ... there may be some duplication along the way. The Sewing Caddy I made some time ago but I just love it ... there are ‘sew’ many pockets to hold anything and everything, a spot to caccy a 6″ wide ruler and scissors that are attached/detachable! The tree is my Selvedge take on the Jelly Roll Christmas Tree that’s been around this past Christmas.

To understand how impressive this neatly organized sewing basket is, you have to refer to the previous photo with all of my spools of thread on the table. All of that was jumbled in this basket. Now all of the thread is in a big thread caddy. In the process of organizing the thread and gadgets, I found several items that had been buried and lost for years. This leaves room in the basket for other things like the cool mending/patching looms that I bought during the pandemic and this cute travel mending kit that my Mom made. I found these two books at JoAnn's the other day when I went to get black thread and quilt batting. The Gears are Turning

Mari won’t accept her father destroying and meddling in her brother’s affairs.  TW: Homophobia 

Martiza was fuming and that in itself was an understatement. Instead of being happy for Sebastián, Leo, and Tony, their father was acting like a complete asshole. There was no surprises there however after the letter the patriarch had written Seb, Mari thought that maybe there was a change of heart. She hadn’t read it for herself and Cami seemed so convinced that maybe their father would have changed his mind about Seb’s life choices. She was glad that her brother was living his own life and happy with his husband and with the news of triplets on the way and Leo and Tony’s Gotcha day, there was plenty of reason for celebration. Too bad no one was talking to anyone and mom was too busy living in their dad’s ass. It was unfortunate, really. Arriving at Luna’s family restaurant, Mari parked her car across the street and spotted her father playing dominoes with his friends. 

She marched right up to him and smacked his shoulder. “Hey. What’s your problem?” 

His friends didn’t even bother to look up. Everyone was afraid of dad. Everyone but Mari. “So are you going to answer me....or?” 

“What is this about, Maritza? I have a game.” 

“I can see that but I have a legitimate question.” She placed her hands on her hips as she waited for an answer. 

“It can’t wait?” Augustin continued played and Maritza moved to sit beside her father. 

“No. It cannot wait. The Gotcha day is in a week. You’re really not going to show? Leo hasn’t heard from you in weeks, dad!” 

“That’s your brother’s fault. He won’t encourage my only grandson to call me that’s his problem.” 

“He’s ten! And my brother knows what he’s doing. What did you write in the letter anyway?” She grabbed a caddy and began stacking dominoes herself. She had no intention of playing but needed to keep her hands busy. 

“Yes, he is ten and should know better. When I was ten, I was helping your abuela sow soles in shoes. They don’t want me in their life. I’m fine here.” 

“Well this isn’t Guatemala, papi and something must have happened. Seb was ready to forgive you!” 

“Forgive me? For what exactly?” Before Mari could answer, Leo was calling her and she showed her father the caller ID screen to let him know before picking up the call. 

“Hey, Lee! Everything ok? Do you need me to get you from school?” 

“No, uncle Khamani is coming with Cannon and Luna and uncle Thomas promised me lessons later. I was calling because dad is taking me to Harry Styles with pops! You wanna come with Cam? It’s in 4 weeks.” 

“Yes! Your dad did mention that to me. Of course. I will be there. I’m talking to your abuelo right now so can I call you back?” The line went silent and all she heard was Leo clearing his throat. 

“ok.” 

The complete disillusion in her nephew’s voice made her frown and she knew her father could overhear. “I love you.” They ended the call and she gave her father the death glare. 

“Do you hear his voice? He’s so scared even of your mention. You’re going to that Gotcha and you’re going to behave.” 

“What does he mean Harry Styles Concert? He’s ten! Isn’t that the singer that walks around in skirts and feather boas?” 

“Ohhh so now he’s too young for that but now sewing insoles into shoes? Dad, please. I’m wasting my time. I’m taking mom to that gotcha and if you don’t show, fine but you’re going to have to be a father to Seb and a grandfather to Leo someday. I’m so tired of this. This is his life and he chose it and he’s happy. Be happy for your kid, for God sakes!” 

Augustin stood up and so did Mari, ready to go face to face with her father when he enveloped her into a shocking embrace. “I won’t go but I promise I’ll send a gift to Leo and Antony. Happy?” 

Brows furrowed, she was surprised at the turn-around. She’d take something and this was something. “Okay. I gotta go back to work.” 

As she pulled away, her phone rang again and this time it was her sister. “Call you back Cam...” She text her and began to back away from her father. Maritza was confused and concerned. Something seemed cryptic about all of this. 

“Tell your brother to reconsider that stupid concert. What will Leo gain from that? He’s teaching him things he shouldn’t at such a young age!” Augustin called out but it was on deaf ears. Mari was already back on her phone.

one of those zipper pouch things with a bunch of mesh pliers and elastic bands for holding pens inside

i have a few patterns for tank tops saved on Pinterest so probably one of those

I think realistically I could do one of these a month (I often don't have time to work on sewing at all and I'm a beginner so I'm extra slow lol)

I've made shorts successfully before so I know pants and underwear are within my abilities

and non-clothing items are easy enough because you don't have to worry about comfort or size

and all of these are things I can use :) I used to knit and crochet they were really fun I struggled to find projects that would be useful to me so I would either make junk or just not make it at all. sewing doesn't really have that problem

that being said crocheting is great for making blankets and I've actually thought about making a blanket recently ^^ it's a nice long term easy project and I think it would be fun to work on something like that. I'd probably want to do a wool blend, maybe something that's washable and won't shrink :P

also I've recently been interested in knitting socks again... I knit one (1) sock before so I kind of know how. I have the needles and stuff just need the yarn... ez and I have some patterns on Pinterest that are very cute. also want to do wool blend on these

I want to expand my sewing skills more in the direction of making clothing but I'm gonna let myself just do what looks fun for the sake of staying sane.

I would like to get into sewing, but it requires so much STUFF. Not even counting the actual sewing machine, its like: iron and ironing board, preferably some sort of caddy for threads and such, fabric (storing???? At least you can wind up yarn...). AND like floor space to measure and cut. AND you might not NEED a dress form but that would be handy...
