#Repost @oceanramsey utilizing the latest technology to get behavioral footage to compare how sharks behave without the presence of humans. Stay tuned for the video footage recorded by this tiger shark Nikki! ・・・ @oneoceandiving @oneoceanresearch This is one of the least invasive way to look at the natural behavior of sharks interacting with each other when they are out of our sight. It also gives us a sharks-eye-view on the timing, angle, and other information about when they might approach a person or object on the surface. This small temporary fin camera lightly clamps on with fine sandpaper to help keep it in place and can record for 1-3 hours from the sharks perspective before the GTR’s dissolve and it floats off with no remnant or damage. Vid taken by @juansharks out with @oneoceandiving and #cinemascientist #inventor @abc4explore who created the trackable and gentle device. In the vid I’m using @geneinno S1 scooter to go into a strong current to retrieve the device. #QueenTigerShark #SharkIDNikki one of my favorite Tiger sharks we see @oneoceandiving carried the camera for a few passes and allowed us a glimps into her world when she was out of sight of the boat and her perspective and reaction when she saw me floating in the surface. Her footage to come 💙 Learn about sharks and experience what it’s like to coexist on their level in a safe, respectful, and also very fun manner with the the best! 😻💜 Posted @withregram • @juansharks Ali’i Nikki, I have know this exact tiger shark for almost 2 decades and every time I get to see her it feels like I’m diving with ohana. Tiger sharks are not actively hunting humans, they are powerful animals, but prefer dead and sick prey items. The problem is humans are not naturally efficient in the water and with out fins, masks, and awareness we look like injured animals. @oneoceandiving we are trying to educate people on how to share the ocean with these important apex predator. If you want to learn more and can’t join us for a dive check out the free educational videos oceanramsey.com #ohana #shark #tigershark #sharkidnikki #helpsavesharks #apexpredatornotmonster #coexist #weneedsharks #oneoceandiving shot using @aquatech_imagingsolutions https://www.instagram.com/p/CLR7afVBE1I/?igshid=e25x78xvgsam

Here with @oneoceandiving, we have a Shark ID program. We study any distinct markings, scars, or any uniqueness on an individual shark and give them an ID name once we have photos from both the sides and top of the shark. This helps us keep track of shark populations and learn more about them. This gorgeous female tiger shark featured in the video below is know here as #SharkIDNikki, who made an appearance yesterday morning. If you’re interested in learning about our local shark population and getting to the know the individuals, check out @oneoceansharks to learn about the IDs! We can’t help but grow more attached to these incredible predators when we begin to see them as individuals. ❤️ Each have their own personalities and behaviors, making them beautifully unique and special animals. #HelpSaveSharks #TurnFearIntoFascination #oneoceandiving #shark #sharkdiving #tigershark #ecotourism #oceanconservation #swimwithsharks say NO to #sharkfishing #sharkfinning #sharkfinsoup as well as shark products like #sharkteeth #sharkjaws and #squalene which is an shark-derived ingredient found in many cosmetic products. #Repost @oceanramsey ・・・ I can die happy😊 💕 I couldn’t help saying it & in such a funny voice 😉😍 “I Lava Nikki!!” 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈💕💕💕💕 Coolest grandma tiger manō shark there is!! So happy she came by and made a cameo on the red helium shooting for an educational 180 degree immersive piece that 2 million people will see (Stay tuned for more info) What a stunning shark to be featured for so many to see the truth and absolute grace of sharks ❤️😍❤️🦈❤️😍. @juansharks and I have known #sharkid #sharkidNikki aka #sharkidsparkles for almost 12 years and we’ve seen her come and go with many scars. Honestly she’s one of the most gentle non aggressive apex predators I’ve ever met. Forever grateful for time with sharks. If more people knew her the way I am so fortunate to, they to would probably devote their life to speaking up for them. #helpsavesharks #savesharks #savetheocean (continued in comments) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpK2qyDhHB8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1vd4fvhdahvbi

As the latest “culling spree” on the East Coast of Australia comes to an end with a total of 6 sharks killed in the week proceeding several adverse human vs shark interactions, it is time to illustrate just how obsolete and ineffective shark culling is, and why this method of shark control should be laid to rest once and for all. Shark control programs across the globe have been a major contributor to the decline in shark populations (Holmes et al. 2012). So, theoretically speaking, if shark populations are reduced then the number of adverse interactions between humans and sharks should reduce as well. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Shark attacks per year in many cases have only increased with the number of humans in the water (West, 2011). But thats not true at all...  The low number of sharks in the water is altering oceanic ecosystems for the worse. More and more sea grass and other essential ecosystem components are being stripped by species that are normally regulated by sharks and those species along with other marine life are being caught in the nets and drumlines deployed by shark culling programs (Trouwborst, 2011). To add, large targeted sharks are quite nomadic meaning that the chances of catching the shark guilty of biting a person are very rare. Chances are, the shark that was caught was one that was nowhere near the site of the adverse interaction at the time of occurrence (Holmes, 2012). Shark culling is a destructive and unethical practice that is unsustainable and has the potential to not only wreck shark populations worldwide, but also has the potential to reek havoc on many other species throughout our oceans.   Post by @clairestrand Photo by @oceanramsey of @juansharks and #SharkIDNikki https://www.instagram.com/p/BoQD8yvBock/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=949shkd9djf3

Inspiring words and awesome video edit from one of our research interns Claire who got lucky with a visit from #SharkIDNikki! 😍💙🦈 #Repost @clairestrand ・・・ Watching the sun rays hit her strips as she wove back and forth through the bubbles behind the Mano Kai, I remember thinking, “this is what life is all about” because the best part about life is being able to be a part of something so much bigger than yourself. This company that I intern for @oneoceandiving .. we do this because we want to remind people of this, because in our day to day lives it’s so easy to forget. To remind and remember just how precious this planet is and how interconnected and dependent we are on the world around us. Empathy is tricky because it usually doesn’t pass our line of sight, but no matter how far away you live from the oceans, you effect Nikki ☝🏼🦈 #nikkithetigershark and you matter to her, just like she should matter to you. For the sake of our species and hers, it’s time we start turning the fear and the misconceptions into fascination and a drive to learn more and do more as a collective living unit. Coexistence with sharks and all apex predators is 100% possible and it’s also necessary. This video is not scary. It’s what life looks like outside the confines of humanity. And THAT is powerful. Posted @withregram • @oceanramsey I LOVE this old Tiger Shark Queen Nikki (Ali’i Nikole) Large sharks will sometimes bite props and metal ladders or poles that conduct electricity into the water, usually its an investigatory checkout due to the attraction from the electro-receptive organ called the Ampullae of Lorenzini, an initial check (bump or bite) or two and they usually stop. In this video I gently lift her nose so she doesn’t run into the boat, but as you can see she still bites the ladder to test it out. This is why we require people to keep their GoPro’s and small electronics on poles, away from their hands, in case a smaller species wants to hone in on the electrical output. Larger species are actually easier to deter with a gentle redirection but of course ***Disclaimer***Please dont attempt to replicate, and if you are in the water and a large shark approaches you, please push down on top of the head, dont apply any pressure below the nose or snout as you can see the natural reaction is to lift away from the pressure and I needed to do this to keep her from running into the ladder, we trimmed the engines up and after a couple checks went back in to have a beautiful dive where Ali’i Nikole (Queen Nikki) was actually quite shy once she saw us looking around at her. I’ve heard of a few spottings of #humpbackwhales already. As a swimmer and surfer during this time of year it’s even more important to Look around, be aware, respect Manō (sharks) by avoiding murky/dirty water/areas with heavy run off/discharge from seasonal storms because it’s even more difficult for them to see what you are or if you are prey or competition for space and the discharge and/or pupping May seasonally attract them closer to shore. #learnaboutsharks #sharkbehavior #savetheocean #helpsavesharks #wiliwilifestival #sharktober https://www.instagram.com/p/B3u2F5vntc1/?igshid=icnicf6t4l5o

Amazing rare video footage And great information from @mermaid_kayleigh @hkffishguy of a tiger shark hunting a sea turtle! #Repost @mermaid_kayleigh ・・・ A few surface video clips of #SharkIDNikki pursuing & hunting a green sea turtle @oneoceandiving! While this may seem sad for the turtle, these events are necessary for the overall health of our oceans ecosystems. Tiger sharks are at the top trophic level of the food web and help regulate everything below them. Removal of sharks can have a negative impact that cascades down the food chain. They target the dead, dying, weak, & injured animals and leave the strong to survive and reproduce. If the tiger sharks were removed from the ecosystem and could no longer regulate the turtle population, overgrazing from the turtles could be an issue. We need sharks for a healthy ocean ecosystem. #SaveSharks 🦈 Mahalo @hkffishguy & @oneoceandiving for an amazing sight on the water!
