Posted @withregram • @oceanramsey I LOVE this old Tiger Shark Queen Nikki (Ali’i Nikole) Large sharks will sometimes bite props and metal ladders or poles that conduct electricity into the water, usually its an investigatory checkout due to the attraction from the electro-receptive organ called the Ampullae of Lorenzini, an initial check (bump or bite) or two and they usually stop. In this video I gently lift her nose so she doesn’t run into the boat, but as you can see she still bites the ladder to test it out. This is why we require people to keep their GoPro’s and small electronics on poles, away from their hands, in case a smaller species wants to hone in on the electrical output. Larger species are actually easier to deter with a gentle redirection but of course ***Disclaimer***Please dont attempt to replicate, and if you are in the water and a large shark approaches you, please push down on top of the head, dont apply any pressure below the nose or snout as you can see the natural reaction is to lift away from the pressure and I needed to do this to keep her from running into the ladder, we trimmed the engines up and after a couple checks went back in to have a beautiful dive where Ali’i Nikole (Queen Nikki) was actually quite shy once she saw us looking around at her. 💙 Your daily doses of vitamins SEA 🌊 ⠀ from @sharks. Words by @oceanramsey Jaws was a fictitious film whose poster kind of looks like this, so this is my effort at an Anti-Jaws type media piece @savingjawsmovie . I’ve been swimming with sharks my whole life and working professionally with them for over 15 years. There’s a challenge I have in my efforts, to find a balance between helping people to overcome their fear of sharks that often stems for fictitious demonizing media and instilling a healthy level of respect for sharks as very capable apex predators ApexPredatorNotMonster not puppy (cause if you pet puppies often even puppies bite, actually a lot ;)). Having worked with sharks for so long I can fully appreciate what they are capable of because I have been rushed by sharks and had to deter them and I have had to leave the water and I have watched them actively predate and compete for space and have confrontations. However, I’ve also had the most incredible moments of my life in the water with them where 99.9% of the time they cruise gracefully around and so long as I keep looking around and pay attention constantly and quietly and give respect and attention to the more dominant individuals and challenging juveniles on a CONSTANT bases I am treated as more or less an equal predator. Never complacent, always respectful and adapting at every second to every movement. I reached the point long ago where I dedicated my life to conservation and I love it, I love educating people about sharks and introducing them to them in a professional guided situation through the program I co-founded @oneoceandiving where we also collect data @oneoceanresearch @oneoceansharks and help support conservation through @Oneoceanconservation and @OneoceanEducation and @Oneoceanglobal @Waterinspired @oneoceanhawaii and other with funds from @oneoceandesigns and diving I love studying shark behavior and body language and its an absolute pleasure to share that with people and help them to better appreciate sharks and I hope inspire them to help save them. Check out http://HelpSaveSharks.Org for more ways to get involved. ⠀ #freediving #spearfishing #scubadiving #surfing #windsurfi https://www.instagram.com/p/BtCxCYiny-x/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=22r4vy06yjjk

#Repost @oceanramsey (@get_repost) ・・・ Wow! I don’t even know what to say. @savingjawsmovie finished last year and is now out! We have a decade of footage that we didn’t even compile and so many interviews from amazing people we would still love to share but we will continue our efforts for shark conservation on multiple projects and platforms because every effort has the potential to reach more people about the importance and plight of sharks. The number of people who now care about sharks is growing and that will mean more voices and support for desperately needed protection from extremely wasteful practices like shark finning. For well over a decade @Juansharks and I have realized that the sharks we grew up with have slowly been disappearing. Its been an honor and privilege to dedicate our lives to being a voice for them. We realize that people often look first and listen 2nd so we are lucky enough work INCREDIBLE (is a serious understatement) creatives like director/cinematographer @keonishoots who put this whole film together with @gravitasventures . So many people to Thank I can’t list them all but thank YOU for your support as we continue our efforts to #HelpSaveSharks and #SaveTheOcean . #SavingJaws is currently available on @amazonprimevideo (go to amazon smile and select **Save The Sea Turtles International** to support the non profit organizations we work with while you shop. Its also available on @itunes I cannot thank enough people for the help and support bringing this project together and am excited to share more. The mechanisms used to produce sound vary from one family of cetaceans to another. Marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins, and porpoises, are much more dependent on sound for communication and sensation than are land mammals, because other senses are of limited effectiveness in water. Sight is less effective for marine mammals because of the way particulates in the ocean scatter light. Smell is also limited, as molecules diffuse more slowly in water than in air, which makes smelling less effective. However, the speed of sound is roughly four times greater in water than in the atmosphere at sea level. Because sea mammals are so dependent on hearing to communicate and feed, environmentalists and cetologists are concerned that they are being harmed by the increased ambient noise in the world's oceans caused by ships, sonar and marine seismic surveys. #vocalisation

A mama tee in the sea. Only in Belize will you hop in the water and immediately have a manatee and a spotted eagle ray swim swimming together. They went opposite directions but I was able to spend some more time with this girl because she was swimming so calmly. I’ll remember this dive forever. Comment below which one you’d choose! Also check my stories for the shot of them together 💙 @alettrich #girlsthatfreedive photo by @johngarzaphoto

The moments that define us, that epitomizes what I love and live for. @oceanramsey and “Bella” (the great white shark) grabbing the whole worlds attention over night & changing perceptions when great white sharks needed it the most. At the time studies were reporting great white shark populations to be less than 350 in the north west pacific. Ocean and I decided to take immediate action by getting images of “anti-jaws-movie” human-shark coexistence that no one thought would be possible. Images that would shatter the perception that sharks are mindless monsters. We’ve worked for decades with sharks and constantly capturing images that get people to look past the fear that movies and media traditionally created and get people inspired to care about the possible extinction of sharks. A huge thanks to @gopro for spreading the video and these images to the world and supporting shark conservation. #goproforacause #gopro #gopro3000 #oceanramsey #helpsavesharks #savesharks #sharkandfreediver #freedivingwithsharks #swimmingwithsharks #shark #sharks #ApexPredatorNotMonster #sharkconservation #photooftheday #greatwhiteshark #coexist #freediving #ocean #amazing #marinebiologist photo by #JuanOliphant using @aquatech_imagingsolutions @cressi1946 @xcelwetsuits @waterinspired @oneoceanresearch @oneoceandiving @oneoceandesigns @oneoceansharks @oneoceanhawaii @oneoceanconservation @oneoceanglobal @oneoceaneducation

The ribbon eel is a species of moray eel. It’s color phase indicates the stage of life it’s in. Juveniles are black, males are blue and females yellow. All ribbon eels are born male and they are the only moray eel that can change from male to female for survival of the species. The adult blue male will change to a female and turn yellow in color. It will then mate, lay eggs and then die. Most of the time we see the eels in their burrows and very seldom do we see them swimming or in the open. #ribbon #eel #marinelife #sealife #snake . . @oneoceandiving #repost Unlike humans, sharks have teeth that aren’t embedded in their gums (Meyer, 2013). This allows sharks to shed and replace their teeth as they age. The number of teeth a shark will develop and lose throughout their life varies from species to species. Larger pelagic sharks, such as great whites can have over 50,000 teeth though the duration of their ~70-year life (Hamady LL, Natanson LJ, Skomal GB, Thorrold SR, 2014). That many teeth can give people the impression that shark teeth are easily available to us in mass amounts. The truth is, the shiny white teeth commonly sold in stores came from a recently culled shark. The only shark teeth you can get without harming sharks are fossilized teeth that show up on beaches and the seafloor after naturally falling out. Say no to buying shark products! After all, wouldn’t it be weird if we dipped our fins into the water and there were sharks wearing necklaces with human teeth dangling from them? #learntocoexist 📸 by @juansharks Post by @elainewyattt __________________________ Check us out at OneOceanDiving.com & JOIN US in the water in #Hawaii on #Oahu #NorthShore to #SwimWithSharks and #DiveWithSharksInHawaii with a trained #MarineBiologist / #SharkSafetyDiver Check out our #Shark and #MarineResearch @OneOceanResearch and our #Education outreach program @OneOceanEducation #LearnAboutSharks and our Non-Profit @Waterinspired conservation group and Founders: @Juansharks and @OceanRamsey Want to join the team?
