Sonic the Hedgehog - Fatphobic Events
Although the Sonic the Hedgehog have been one of my favourite game series I’ve grew up with, I’ve seen and recalled some of the moments that really have me thinking if I’ve almost been inspired to act like Sonic ‘too much’ in the past. Thankfully I haven’t, but things to be aware of in terms of fatphobic events and aspects in the game series.
First is none other than Dr. Robotnik himself, which everyone knows as Eggman. For true Sonic fans, they would know that Robotnik was given his more popular name after Sonic Adventure. When Sonic and Robotnik first met, Sonic’s first remark was along the lines of ‘Hey look! A giant talking egg!’, in regards to his body shape. To which after Robotnik responds back introducing himself, Sonic replies after ‘whatever you say, Eggman!’ However, according to a Q&A with Yuji Naka in 2004 regarding how the name transition played a role in the US games, as well as how Sonic was making fun of his nemesis with his common name, he responses that 'Sonic uses this name affectionately, rather than trying to make fun of him.’ (Source: http://web.archive.org/web/20040124111152/http://www.sega.com/sonic/globalsonic/post_sonicteam.php?article=nakainterview)
Despite that, honestly that’s just… disappointing. Although Eggman has attempted to commit bad schemes in the series, shouldn’t Sonic have a bit more respect from his arch-nemesis?
Watching Sonic in his Lego Dimensions story (which to be honest, the voice acting could’ve been better), I heard him say 'Fatty Lobotnik’ coming out of a boss fight with Robotnik. Disappointing again. I’m not sure outside of what I mentioned if there were any fatphobic events regarding Eggman in the game series.
Sonic and the Secret Rings, although minor, King Shayhar (who was the Arabian parallel to Eggman) was also to have said to had been stuck in a jar hiding from Erazor Djin’s henchmen.
Also with Sonic Lost World, be mindful as among the Deadly Six (based off the Seven Deadly Sins iirc), one who’s called Zom Zom represents gluttony, and he’s represented in many of the cutscenes like that; size, personality… Sonic even suggests in one cutscene; 'two words: diet and exercise’. And here, Eggman is directly called out by the leader of the Deadly Six when he tells Sonic 'you are destined to fail, as the fat fool has failed before you. And at the end of the game Eggman is stuck in the ground for a brief time too before getting out. .-.
So yeah, Sonic still may be one of my favourite gaming series, but I still disapprove on how there’s inclusion of fatphobia from time to time. It doesn't mean I'm going to not be interested in the games anymore, only that if there's portrayal of fatshaming or another event which even which can portray fat people (or in this case Eggman and Zom Zom) in a negative light.
