For my aro but partnering friends/mutuals/followers, I think I accidentally stumbled my way into a qpr/platonic life partner? And I desperately want advice for how to approach this from people who have established themselves in such dynamics.

I was discussing being aro with a very close friend and how it can be frustrating to be in the position of not wanting romantic relationships but still wanting companionships because for the most part, people eventually reach a point where they don’t want roommates who are ‘just friends’ and that leaves people like her (not looking to date or get married in a traditional romantic sense but not ever wanting to live alone) in a bit of a tricky spot.

I am in a semi-romantic marriage because my relationship with romance is v complicated but I’m also poly and do better in a big house with more than just me and my spouse and the world is expensive so banding together makes it easier. (I’m one of those who’s ideal life dream is to live in a giant house with my friends forever)

I unthinkingly responded with ‘yeah that’s frustrating but just so you know you’ll always have a place with me. We won’t kick you out unless u want to leave.’ And it ended up with her agreeing to move states with us as my ‘permanent roommate’ as we called it, and we are planning to run a business together. She’s even going back to school specially to get a degree for this business we plan to start. It’s for this reason I get the vibe we’ve actually stumbled into a life partner type situation.

Anyways onto the issue. I like our dynamic. I don’t want it to change and I don’t care for labels but I do want to clarify where we stand on commitment since it’s not something we’ve actively discussed. I want to know if she sees this the same way that I do, and if not I want to know if what I want (semi-permanent commitment where we operate as a unit from a life decision standpoint but we are not and will not ever be romantically involved) is something that she wants/is willing to consider. But I have no clue how to approach.

I’ve only attempted to initiate on this specify type of relationship once but it ended in a gentle rejection due to them not being in a place to consider it. That makes me a little nervous to approach again with a different person but at the same time that instance was way more out of the blue rather than me approaching someone who has already cemented future plans with me. I also want to make sure that she knows if what she wants doesn’t match what I want it doesn’t change anything. So……yeah. Anyone have advice on how to approach? I’d appreciate.

I really enjoy your idea of friendship mates being a thing, especially for mor/az, because it would eliminate more of the toxic masculinity and possessiveness sjm tries to spin as romance and replace it with something else that isn’t explored much. Especially since the inner court is supposed to be a found family, it would tie in nicely to include deeper friendships among them.

I might explore it/write it anyway, tbh. Because Mor and Az deserve to have the connection and the understanding and the obvious love they had for each other in ACOMAF again.

I re-read some of their scenes the other day, and while I'm sure they were building up to a romantic relationship (bc that's what sjm do/The Ultimate Relationships Always Ever) they spoke of such a quiet, familiar intimacy:

Mor waiting for him/being there for his return from every single mission. Knowing he needs someone to greet him as Azriel, before he has to go to Rhys as spymaster.

Mor having the stubbornness to wear down his "infinite patience" to get him to open up, and talk about his feelings. Her being literally the only person he'll do that with.

Az being there for Mor in the Court of Nightmares, by her side, utterly willing to have everyone there know that he's hers for her comfort.

Interrupting Cassian to stop him saying too much.

Keeping eyes on each other when they get upset/overwhelmed by a situation or topic of conversation.

Az going dancing with Mor at Rita's whenever she asks - a victory for them both.

Mor knowing Azriel is in love with her but not pushing him to confront it. Not rushing him. Az acknowledging how much the inner circle means to both of them, how terrified she is to threaten that dynamic again, and refusing to ask her to do it.

This intimate, mutual stasis in their relationship, both longing for more, but being too respectful and understanding of the other to ever push them. And so they maintain.

And that didn't have to be fucking romantic. It could have been platonic. She didn't have to completely eradicate one of the most nuanced, subtle, and beautiful dynamics in the series just because she decided to make Mor a tormented lesbian.

And I will never, ever, EVER fucking forgive her for using 'I don't/can't love Azriel' as the method of her coming out.

Her voice broke as she said, “I don’t love Azriel.”

I remained perfectly still. Listening.

“No, that’s not true, either. I—I do love him. As my family. And sometimes I wonder if it can be … more, but … I do not love him. Not the way he—he feels for me.”

The big "dramatic reveal" shocking plot twist bit of dialogue here is "I don't love Azriel". And then she tries to backtrack/make that sound less bad, and 'I do love him as my family' but 'I do not love him the way he loves me.'

It's just. The whole thing is steeped in 'romantic love is the most valid/powerful kind of love and everything else is secondary'.

As if she and Azriel don't have as deep a connection, as strong a bond, as intense a relationship as Feyre and Rhys do just because they're romantically connected? As if 500 fucking years of devotion and adoration and connection and companionship isn't worth shit compared to 'what Az feels for her'. As if Azriel loves her more than she loves him becahse he wants to bone her and she doesn't want to bone him.

It's fucking infuriating. And it's fucking insulting as well.

The implication that ace people can't love their partners as much because they don't want sex.

The implication that aro people can never form meaningful bonds/love anyone as deeply as people in romantic relationships.

I call fucking bullshit. It's an absolute fucking disgrace and I'm still mad about it multiple years later.

And in ACOMAF she set up the idea of mates as like soulmates? You know. Two people who can understand each other and see each other and connect with each other more deeply than anyone else.

But then she had to introduce ~drama~ into into elucien and oh maybe they won’t get together. And then ACOWAR Rhys is coming out with ‘maybe the bond is just for who’ll make the nicest babies’ and I wanted to commit BLOODY MURDER.

So ace people can’t have bonds because they don’t want to bone?? Aro people can’t have bonds because it’s just for loving and having kids (which you know sjm only considers valid if it’s done by two people In Love/a typical nuclear family option). Gay people? Trans people?? Infertile straight people??? None of you or your bonds are valid because it’s just for making babies.

GO FUCK OFF.

Moriel as mates even after the utter DISASTER of Mor’s sexuality reveal is quite literally the only way to fix this fucking mess.

I stopped reading after DotC so no spoilers blease hehe

atm I’m only doing them for first series but as I continue my reread I will add more from the series.

Firestar: poly bisexual disaster. there was the start of some gray/raven/fire as apprentices, but then ravenpaw left and he still has his big ol crush on graystripe as they grew up together. He was devastated when graystripe was taken by twolegs and never took another mate until gray’s return. I like to headcanon he retired to end his days with gray in the elder’s den and made either Squirrelflight or Hollyleaf leader after him

Sandstorm: trans lesbian. not sure who I ship her with because I do like her with firestar in canon, but she has big wlw vibes. maybe ferncloud? same age difference as dust/fern anyway /shrug

Graystripe: big dumb gay. Loves his husband firestar and sitting in the sun. He did date silverstream and have kids before he realized he was gay, (he was avoiding firestar bc of Feelings he didn’t want to have for his best friend) but now they live happily ever after and can nap in a ray of sunshine anytime they want. 

Ravenpaw: trans n gay. lives happily on the farm with barley and their pet chickens. had a crush on fire and gray when they were apprentices but it never went anywhere because he left.

Spottedleaf: aromantic wlw, I don’t have a huge headcanon she just gives off aro vibes to me. in my version of canon she does not creepily ghost stalk firestar for the rest of his life. 

Bluestar: Lesbian. she had flings when she was younger but after her case of the not-gays with Oakheart she punished herself by not allowing herself to be in a relationship. I like to imagine in Starclan she reunites with Rosetail and they can be together for real.

Mousefur: asexual aromantic, in a QPR with longtail during their time in the elder’s den.

Redtail: gay and trans. I love the headcanon that he and runningwind are sandstorms dads

Yellowfang: asexual lesbian. I don’t have any ships with her because I think she’s fine being single, but that cat is Gay.

Dustpelt: Bisexual Aromatic. He fathered ferncloud’s kits because she wanted them and they were friends, but he had no romantic feelings for her. He had a Deeply repressed crush on firestar when they were apprentices. Maybe ship with Thornclaw?

anyway yes thank you for the question! romance? yes, we’ve got some of this going on, sure, though I would count the romance as within the found family c:

I don’t know if you wanted a Ramble™ but this is a topic I can ramble about and I’m in a bit of a rambling mood so you can have a ramble, free of charge, just take it up to the register and have them enter the code “logan this is not what I ordered”

but yeah, your question? about eight vaguely relevant tangents immediately spring to mind! also spoilers?? spoilers after the cut

I really should have formatted this response in a way that puts the super spoiler heavy part at the end but since when have I ever ever in my life made things easy for my dear sweet followers

y’all know what I’m like with spoilers by now 

but yeah, to set the scene, there’s two main romantic......................... situations going on in the story, the first being between Noa and Alice, and the second being between Kai, Tris and Shara. so, the former I would describe as “a legitimate romantic subplot” and the latter I would describe as a character tripping and falling into it by sheer chance and just being like “oh whoops well I guess this is what I’m doing now” which is also extremely valid

Noa and Alice end up not being, like, Confirmed Endgame by the end of the story even though much of the plot looks like it’s heading in that direction, and like...... yeah, in my head, they do end up in a romantic relationship at some point post-story, but I’m not sure on what sort of timeline

during the story itself, it’s established that they do share mutual feelings for each other and this is likely heading towards a romantic relationship, but I think since much of the story sees Noa still trying to find her feet in just, like....... having friends at all, and trusting those friends, and knowing who she is in relation to others on any sort of level, I think near the end of the story she decides that she’s not at a place where she wants to try and figure out a romantic relationship just yet

it’s not a hard no, it’s just a “hey not right now” and a “let’s see what happens later down the track, for now it’s just nice to be around friends” ‘cause even that is just super new territory for her

which I worry will make people feel cheated, but also, I think it’s the ending for this subplot that would make the most sense for where the characters are at and would be the most fitting c:

well, there WAS a vaguely jokey post I made yonks back where I pitched the idea of an ATDAO polyamory ending being just like. Alice who’s dating Noa who’s dating Shara who’s dating Kai who’s dating Tris. and I stand by this being solid as hell. but also, given the ending to Noa’s subplot with Alice, it doesn’t really work in the story canon, n though I think Noa and Shara is a dynamic I really enjoy, it would likely not actually play out in reality :P

which leaves the trio of Shara, Kai and Tris, a trio I’ve always vibed with and had vaguely on my radar as a valid poly ending but for some reason didn’t twig that I could just, like, make it canon and no one can stop me LMAO

but yeah, this one, like I said, it’s not so much aHD whole big subplot, it’s just something that falls into place super casually and is never really brought up beyond “oh is this a thing that’s happening?” “yeah” “cool ok”

I think there’s a brief window as a reader where you might be like “ugh this is gonna be a stupid love triangle or some weird jealousy thing” but then it just ends up being a complete non-issue. there’s basically zero romantic drama for this plotline, Tris and Shara are bros and Kai is dating both of them

n as for your question itself, it depends on whether you mean, like.......... how they would go about expressing to someone else that they have romantic feelings or, like, how they express their affections in a romantic scenario

‘cause for the former, the answer for both Tris and Noa is just.... they don’t

Noa because at the start of the story she views her crush on Alice as a huge fucking inconvenience that’s going to make things messy and complicated, so she just tries to ignore her romantic feelings as hard as she can (obviously this doesn’t last hahaha). but yeah, she’s just very pissed off that she has a crush and doesn’t want to acknowledge it :P she also has no idea how to respond when Alice expresses romantic interest in her, this is all extremely new territory

and Tris because he doesn’t realise he’s even experiencing romantic feelings in the first place?? like. the boy has so much baseline anxiety jitteriness that stuff like, idk, feeling your heart pick up pace, butterflies in the stomach, any kinda social nerves you get around the people you like, etc, he experiences this with Kai and is automatically just like “great now you’re here and I’m having a panic attack can you please leave”

just slaps a label of Bad Vibes onto it then later is like Wait A Minute

but yeah, I think neither of them would be super comfy actually expressing their feelings out loud or making that first move, Noa because she’s super fuckin petty and stubborn and Tris because he’s waaaaaaaay too fuckin socially anxious for that shit are you kidding

in terms of how they express their affections though??

so like. I have to reiterate that I’m aro and ace and I have a lot of difficulty in articulating what makes a romance A Romance, like??? I have relationships that are friendships and relationships that are romantic, but I myself don’t really experience romantic attraction in the way other people do

as such, the way I write characters in their romantic expressions tends to be just an extension of how they act in their friendships? which I think is a pretty ok thing to base a romance off anyway, but like, yeah, romance, this is a mystery to me for the most part, do I look like I know what a romance is

anyway I think once Alice and Noa get a little closer there’s a lot of good-natured ribbing and friendly insults, n since they already had a bit of a rivalry going on beforehand I would imagine this competitive streak doesn’t disappear :P Noa is generally uncomfy with being Openly affectionate and soft with others, so I think there would be a lot of more “indirect” ways she shows this care. I think they have the kind of relationship where from an outside perspective you don’t really get how it’s warm and affectionate, but it’s just ‘cause you don’t know the lingo, right

Tris is just the cheerleader type in all friendly relationships I think, lots of encouragement and hype and compliments and enthusiasm, he’s very excitable and very easily impressed hahahaha. though I think it takes people a while to click that he’s legitimately being 100% earnest and genuine, the constant deadpan does not work super well in his favour

anyway I’m gonna hop back up for a sec so I can cover Shara and Kai real quick

these two are............ a bit more direct with actually verbalising their feelings to people? Shara is a socially anxious type, but also not someone who enjoys beating around the bush, n she generally likes to just speak what’s on her mind and be direct with others whenever she can. Kai just kinda........ I mean, I don’t think they consider romantic affections to be a super big deal? at least in theory? I say in theory ‘cause, like, I think they give the impression that this kind of conversation is just super smooth and easy for them, and on the inside they’re like “it’s really not a big deal it’s just feelings it’s whatever” but they’re still anxious about it and had to hype themself up for like a week before going through with it lmao

but ye, in terms of how they express their affections, they’re both fairly similar. you suddenly will just Not Be Able To Get Rid Of Them, they’ll constantly be hanging around in the same space or dragging you into whatever shenanigans they’ve got going on, I think for both of them their favourite expression of love is just sharing in experiences or sharing the same space, just Being Involved And Around 

a “hey come help me run errands” type or a “I’m gonna hang off the back of your sofa while you’re studying and sometimes slingshot balls of paper at you with a rubber band” type :P

and now I have to go on Another Tangent just ‘cause the subject matter is vaguely relevant and idk where else I’m gonna go on this tangent

there is definitely some part of me that’s still super super fond of the idea of Kai being aro??? and I initially did write them as such, but for the moment this is not something that’s remained canon in text ‘cause I’m a little bitch ‘cause like

Kai would be aro in very much the same way I am, which is to say, they’re a person who is extremely full of love and who has difficulty in differentiating what the step is supposed to be between friendship feelings and romantic feelings, so, someone who may not necessarily “get” what makes a romance a romance or experience any feelings different from a strong friendship, but who is still open to being in a romantic relationship

(the difference between us being that Kai Really Really Likes People and enjoys being close with others as much as possible, where I’m more the awkward standoffish hermit type lmao)

but yeah, I was kinda like. well. despite being a perfectly valid aro person in a romantic relationship myself, if I were a fictional character people would probably call me bad rep HAHAHA. like “yeah they’re apparently aro but they don’t really ACT aro and the author put them in a romantic relationship ://”

and while I think there’s value to be had in fiction in exploring the different ways a person can be aro, I just, like................... thought about the hypothetical future discourse and was just like UGH. I cannot be fucking BOTHERED

I get enough people in real life being like “ok but you’re not REALLY aro like why do you even bother having that label it’s not like it matters in your context” even though I’m the goddamn expert on my own experiences you bastards

More badass moments. Felicity is an amazing hacker, but I truly believe she would have advanced in the field as well if trained. Sure, I love Morally Gray! Felicity, but this part of her was quickly demonized by her friend group and I dunno that’s just uncomfortable for me. Felicity ain’t allowed to carry a gun so she can feel safe? She’s been kidnapped how many fucking times and Oliver’s throwing a shitfit now that she has the means to protect herself? It just doesn’t make sense. I feel like Oliver would object to Felicity killing, but also, she’s already commited mass murder? That’s the entire reason Ragboy left? Like she’s already killed people, Oliver, she’s been to the dark side before, dude, you can’t “save” her. I think he would’ve been more likely to train Felicity so she can defend herself properly so the gun wasn’t her only source of defense just in case it was used against her. Honestly all the teams need to train their more brainy members how to fight in general, you cannot have a person involved in something that could get them killed and not do that guys

Of course Cisco would have some relationship with his best friend’s alter. They’re not best friends (Frost considers Ralph her best friend), but they’re close. He introduced her to Game of Thrones. Frost calls him “Cissy,” “Transco” and “Vibeboy.” Cisco overuses “White Walker” way too much when talking with her.

A good boy?? I dunno, I can never find any content for Aro Cisco. I like to think that he’s emotionally stunted because his parents weren’t affectionate, and he developed a broad fixation on escapist fantasies for comfort and stimulation, like tv shows and comics. This could just be a projection ha

I wish Cisco would just get confirmed as trans already! And he should talk about the fact he has a dead brother more often, that sting doesn’t just go away after a few episodes. Also give him and Iris more of a relationship. Also make him talk to Ralph more. Also there needs to be more chemistry with Kamilla, like comeon guys let’s see some banter over here rn he has more canonical chemistry with Ralph’s girlfriend

Cisco, Barry, Ralphie. Cisco especially, they’re besties, everyday, inside jokes, binge-watch together, dumb idiots with wildly different coping mechanisms, I think that;s why I like their friendship so much? Cait sort of just shuts down, ignores it, pushes herself into something she views as more productive than her thoughts and feelings. Cisco de-constructs his emotions by putting them in ways he can easily understand, into comics and characters, because tv was his only escape from the emotional neglect his family offered. Caitlin focused solely on getting out and being someone Thomas could be proud of, y’know?

Ace, bi, poly. Neutral, polite, aloof, superiority complex, inferiority complex, definite imposter syndrome-- idunno i fell in love with s1 Cait and I wish her canonically life-long tendency to repress and deny would show up more. Definitely the smartest in any given group (and she knows it), but is nice about it. Remember in season one when she called a brain freeze the long-ass scientific name? Instant love, I’m love her, I wish she did that more, clearly she loves science and medicine and biology so so much and I really hope they show more of her being a fuckin dork for it, it makes her feel so much more human, she’s just. great

Miraculous Ladybug LGBTQ+ Headcanons

Marinette: Demi, Bi. maybe genderqueer?? likes exploring gender identity and androgyny through fashion but hasn’t considered it too much

Adrien: Demi, Bi or Pan probably - doesn’t have a gender preference and alternates terms/uses them interchangeably or by the day. Probably also genderfluid, likes being more androgynous or feminine some days (including dresses or skirts) but typically identifies as male. Is unsure because of his upbringing in the fashion world and doesn’t know how much is his surroundings and how much is Him ??

Nino: Pan - no gender preference and tends to be attracted based on personality/soul/vibe/etc (the person as a whole rather than anything having to do with gender identity) 

Alya: Bi as fuck. She is loud and proud and will rip someone to shreds for implying that her identity is ‘fake’ - also applies to pan (which she sometimes uses)

Juleka: Trans, gay as hell!!! What a beautiful goth lesbian

Rose: doesn’t really use labels?? She is attracted to beautiful, sweet, caring people. Loves her goth girlfriend lots and lots. possibly poly?? at the very least she is in quite a few queer platonic relationships as well (she just has so much love and affection to share)

Nathanael: Pan, maybe gender fluid. Also, open to poly relationships but a little wary because of a past relationship(s)

Kim: ??? He has no idea what the fuck he would identify as. He knows he likes people who are confident and have attitude/spunk and that he tends to get tunnel vision on a specific person when he crushes but if somebody confesses to him (and he is unattached/has his partner’s permission) he is willing to see how it goes ((in other words: pan and probably poly but doesn’t really realize either of those things, because big dumb energy))

Kagami: Bi, but also a strong preference for women so sometimes considers just saying she’s a lesbian, sometimes just with a boyfriend - which is why she keeps sticking with bi. Somewhere between aro and demiromantic but isn’t quite aware of that yet. Has definitely stood behind Chloe during one (or a few) of her Trans Women ARE WOMEN moments, just fiddling with her fencing foil - flexing it, swinging it around, etc - silently threatening the person on the receiving end of Chloe’s verbal whipping with a much more physically painful backlash.

Lila: Straight. Claims to be an ally, and an amazing one (do you know how many pride events she helped plan/created around the world??? So. Many. She helped educate people in the Amazon and in Swaziland and some other places All About LGBTQ+ things, had you heard?) But in practice… Is Not.. And is actually pretty terrible. Has claimed to be bicurious but anytime someone who was not cis male would express interest she would get uncomfortable or even offended and would often lash out at the person. and that did not fly well so she stopped so as to not hurt her reputation further…
