Michael: I had my hair cut and my beard neatened up on Friday. Yeah, it was a sad moment I have to say - not for everybody, Anna was very pleased - but I have to say I felt a little sad having grown it to monumental proportions, particularly beard. My hair was riddiculously long - if my hair wasn’t curly... before they cut it they wet it you know and it was like off way down my back, it was extraordinary. So it was a lovely excuse to be able to grow a very large beard and long hair. Ultimately... a little spoiler - not a spoiler, a little tidbit: that I get to use that look for a little bit of filming before I had it all cut of so that was good. Series 2 of Staged, you’ll see the full glory of the growth when that comes out. (x)
Hi, remember when I said Michael's mouth staring could be a habit or a hearing problem, because he said he couldn't understand others because of the masks while filming PS (he said that on SheenCon)?
I've seen all Staged 2 episodes, and there's a scene where Michael and other person (I'm not saying who in case you haven't seen it) wear masks and he says "I can't hear through this thing" pulling his mask down. It really looked like he couldn't understand without looking at someone's mouth.
Hello, Anon. Yes, I do remember your previous message, and the many discussions that have happened on this blog in regard to Michael’s mouth staring. I perhaps may not have been clear in my prior responses, though, because I wholeheartedly agree that Michael looks at other people’s mouths when they are talking, to hear them better. But I also happen to think that Michael looks at David’s mouth (and David in general) in an additional way, a distinct way that is about more than just hearing him better. The pictures below help to illustrate this, all of them showing a warmth, affection, and a deep, abiding love in Michael’s gaze that--in my opinion--is reserved solely for David.
I’ve also seen all of Staged 2 (as many of us have by now, so I’ll speak freely), and I know the scene to which you are referring. But what I find interesting, Anon, is that you’ve honed in on that particular detail while somehow overlooking everything surrounding it. So yes, Michael says he can’t hear through the masks, but right before that--before they’ve even put on the masks--Michael says, “I can’t hear you, sorry!” in this sort of cheeky, instigating fashion, as if to get David to lower the window because he wants to be as close to him as possible.
...And so David lowers the window, and the months and months of pent up emotions and longing between these two are just rolling through the screen in waves.
David: “Here we are.”
Michael: “I guess that worked out, then.”
There is just so much happening here. The softness and twinge of regret in Michael’s voice. How incredibly warm David’s eyes are. The way Michael hovers close to the car, as if standing on a precipice that he wants desperately to fall over. The sheer happiness, love, and adoration shining in David’s eyes as he looks at him. So to me, the mask and Michael not being able to hear is part of the scene, but it’s a part that seems strange to emphasize when it is utterly eclipsed by everything else around it.
Again, this is all just my opinion, and I appreciate that you followed up so we could discuss Michael’s marvelous mouth-staring further. Thanks for writing in!
