The Holiday (2006) was filmed in our village and the pub where Jude and Cameron meet is where our Village Cinema Committee (of which I have recently become a member) meets too. We don't sit at the same table as Jude did. - but I did sit there briefly for the photo I've included. Ar this weeks meeting we were mainly planning our Christmas event which is going to be based around showing 'Fisherman's Friends' (2019) and have a Cornish theme. We show quite a lot of gentle or populist films suitable for the "grey pound" but we have plenty of members with broader tastes and in the new year we are showing Capernaum (2018). Through six decades Robert Redford has graced our cinema screens with charm and dependability (and good looks). He has also directed (his only Oscar was for helming 'Ordinary People), produced, and of course helped give us the Sundance Film Festival. He says 'The Old Man & the Gun' (which we are showing at our village cinema @sherevillagecinema this week) will be his last film. If it is he will be sadly missed. He is a true star (an overused term) and we owe him a great deal for his contribution to film. I was the projectionist last night for 'A Private War' at our village cinema in which Rosamund Pike gave a stunning performance as the renowned American journalist Marie Colvin. The script and direction have their faults and as Mark Kermode says about Colvin’s own refusal to become the subject of the stories she was reporting there is therefore “an inherent irony in any drama that places her centre stage", (he prefers the documentary about Colvin - 'Under the Wire'). And yet as we watched last night, the strength of Pike's performance and the films portrayal of the true horrors and injustices that Colvin saught to publicise caught hold of us. “Why is the world not here?” was Colvin’s repeated question as she ventured into the most deadly – and often overlooked – areas of conflict. The answer is that where Colvin felt an unstoppable need to witness and report on “the truth”, others often feared to follow. As Kermode admits - "at a time when news itself is under fire, with journalists demeaned and attacked by despots bent on obliterating the very concept of truth, perhaps Colvin’s story is more relevant than ever”. Ultimately though Colvin was simply trying to remind the world of what those in power try to hide - that in war it is always the civilians caught up in it who suffer most. I love films about the film business and I loved Stan & Ollie when I saw it this week at our village cinema. The film focuses on the profound bond between the comedy partners in the twilight of their career, as they embark on one final tour of Britain’s music halls. Coogan and Reilly are superb and do a great job of portraying the couple and performing some of their classic skits. The film plays it fairly safe but I found it's gentle, affectionate tone delightful and was fully emotionally engaged with their struggles with their relationship, their fading careers and old age. Village Cinema shows 'Spitfire' with directors Q&A and a great night was had by all. Excellent documentary which combines beautiful new footage of still flying Spitfires with archive footage and fascinating interviews with surviving WW2 pilots (the last of "the few"). Interesting Q&A with the co directors (David Fairhead & Ant Palmer) afterwards about the filming and the struggles of getting an independent documentary 'off the ground' financially. At our Village Cinema to see 'The Children Act' (2017). What a great facility. Twice a month the village hall turns into a cinema - complete with wine and an ice cream interval. Thursday night it was packed! The film was good but not great. Emma Thompson gave a super performance as a High Court Judge struggling with complicated ethical cases and with her marriage (to Stanley Tucci - another good performance). But the story didn't hang together well and I didn't feel as emotionally involved as I should have done.
