HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the legendary English comic actor, writer, and film director, Stan Laurel, best known for the comedy duo Laurel & Hardy. Their long career gave us 107 short films, feature films, cameo roles, and recordings. Stan began in music hall, developing his devices with bowler hat, comic gravity, and nonsensical understatement. He rose through the ranks of pantomime and as Charlie Chaplin’s understudy in Fred Karno’s Army (a British vaudeville troupe). Charlie and Stan went to Hollywood together and from there entered history. Laurel & Hardy became a successful team in 1927, and they remain cultural icons—oft-imitated, oft-quoted, and still drawing audiences today. Even their catch-phrases are imbedded in our culture. Here’s a song I wrote based on the L&H bromide, “Well here’s another fine mess you’ve gottten me into…” HB Stanley, and thank you for the countless hours of joy you’ve given to the world.

STAN Facts...from a Stan 7!

Stan's famous hairstyle was created by accident. He and Oliver Hardy had shaved their heads to play convicts in The Second 100 Years (1927). His hair grew back very unevenly and refused to stay down. Others on the Roach lot laughed, so Stan began to cultivate the new look. Offscreen, he combed it straight back, as did Hardy.

Stan Laurel: Pioneered The Original Bedhead!!  

Here’s the thing, though: While the term bedhead is relatively recent, the concept itself has a tangled history that reaches back hundreds of years. “Everything happens for a reason on a lazy day…” SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Unresolved (Graham Greene’s Script for Laurel & Hardy)” —I’m  a fan of the classic comedy of Laurel & Hardy. I’m also a fan of Graham Greene, the prolific British writer known for exploring the paradoxes of morality, politics, and spirituality. His characters became (reluctantly or surprisingly) “heroes” through ironic or redemptive acts. Greene’s story-endings weren’t always tidy and Hollywood-friendly even though many of his books became films. Yet one accepts his endings—because everything happens for a reason. My song “Unresolved” imagines Greene writing a film script for Laurel & Hardy, on a theme that parts of life are unresolved tragic-comedies. It's also a refraction on the hymn “Farther Along.”

One sunny afternoon I was rambling around on a guitar, improvising on “Yesterday” by Paul McCartney. Working out on those riffs led me to creating this song.
