I think a lot of the dweebyness came from his early years during his shy, awkward, aww-shucks era. once he got more confident with english, he shifted to a more jock-y vibe
Haha, sorry yall are never gonna convince me that malkin was ever dweeby. Jock is winning the poll btw:
Tumblr media
I do, however, totally buy that an american audience mostly comprised of sports fans would look at a teenage boy struggling with a language barrier and immediately label him as 'different' and 'awkward' and 'quiet' and 'dweeby' and a whole bunch of other labels that shoves him into a box and then expect him to stay in that box because they've already decided on what kind of person he is.
We know how our (US) culture works, there's hundreds of american high school movies testifying to the sports/popularity hivemind.
But thats a temporary ostracization. It doesn't feel the same as the more personality-based, more permanent ostracization of the stereotypical 'dweeb' in high school. It's very different to grow up with a bunch of kids in the same neighborhood and watch yourself slowly become excluded and ignored as you get older. that wasnt me - my mother was my bully and from elementary school on she forced me into a form of social normal that made me invisible rather than a target for school bullies. (I dont know if i would reccomend this parenting style though). But i was friends with most of those kids - the ones who nobody would talk to and everybody would make fun of behind their back (we were post c*lumbine so outward bullying was frowned upon). That boy in my square dancing class was one of the few male dweebs, his name was yusef - like joseph but with a "y" and "you" sound. And im not kidding, i dont think the poor kid ever had any friends? Even i couldnt get him to talk, and ive always been pretty good at drawing people out of their shell. Most of the dweebs were girls - colleen, diane, stephanie, alicia - all my friends, all of whom i remember better than the jocks at our school. And absolutely a conscious choice on my part, i remember the point in elementary school when i was walking home with a few girls i knew and they saw colleen and diane a half block ahead of us (within hearing distance), and immediately started pointing out everything that made the two 'dweeb' girls weird and what was wrong with them. And i didnt even say anything i just glared at the girls i was with and ran ahead to walk with colleen and diane instead. And that was that, i knew i had picked sides, i wasnt ever going to join in with the people who make fun of those that are different \o/
aaand now im dealing with a total new form of social ostracization here in LA that feels eerily familiar, but whereas in school you could ignore the social game playing and succeed in spite of them, here suddenly what job you get hangs on who you know. Everybody always used to bug me like 'why are you staying in pittsburgh so long, why havent you tried to make it in the real industry yet' and my answer was always a) i loved my team and they needed me and b) i was art director so had more creative freedom (and my own office) than i could expect to have anywhere else. But i think truthfully in the back of my mind i kinda knew - there were enough hints over the years - what this city would be like and that i would be abysmal at fighting to survive in it.
Anyway im just sayin i dont think malkin - or any of these hockey players - has ever dealt with that level of social ostracization. Its nice watching these guys be nice to other people they consider on their level, and really cute and enjoyable. But for me at least there's always that awareness that if any of them met me, im not the type of person they'd consider worthy of time or attention - probably wouldnt be outright mean, but absolutely would be trying to avoid any lengthly association lol. I think its one of the main differences between being in sports fandom vs books or movies.
ALTHOUGH god, i will never ever forget the day i met one of my biggest childhood heroes - an author about my age 24ish. Who i idolized because she was living my dream - getting to write and create for a living and starting at such a young age. And she was mostly indifferent to me, didnt say much, didnt interact, just signed the book. And i shrugged it off. But then this teenage girl came up, just radiating what we'd call dweebiness. Her hair was a mess, face full of acne, awkward, but loud and really enthusiastic about the book, and desperate for someone to share that enthusiasm. And the author was mean. And cold. To this teenage girl who obviously idolized her and would have killed to have some sign of approval even if it was faked. Anway, instead this teenage girl latched onto me and i had to try to make up for the bitchy author but i knew my approval wasnt worth nearly as much and it broke my heart. I havent read or bought a single one of that author's novels since.
so yeah, its not just jocks, but they have the worse reputation in media.

Okay y'all I know Zarya's a Jock TM but consider the Industrial and Cybergoth skins and imagine, if you will, teenage Zarya. Pretty GNC, bigger than the other girls, growing up in a small town in the middle of nowhere, no siblings that I've heard of, clearly gay. I'm not saying that's a perfect recipe for a baby goth but like. That's what made me goth so

Aruani week au
Prom night Part 1
With the girls of Maria High,
Annie stepped out of the bathroom freshly wet and clean, she took a deep inhale of the warm and moist steam from the shower. There she was off to her big day. Annie's first prom. She was going with her friends as a group. Annie was also excited for her date, she kept her feelings hidden for a while and surprisingly she was the one to ask him out. Annie actually didn't know why he agreed to take her to prom. That was one of her fears, love.
She fasened her gaze upon her roommate, Hitch Dryse. "Hitch you can shower now." Hitch was the teasing type of friend. She made jokes and she was also very popular with boys. Annie herself, was also popular with boys too. But she only had eyes for one, and she was furious when she discovered her feelings. Annie was emotionless most of the time and she was shocked when he had a crush. She tried to hide it sayin that it was her brain tricking her but eventually it was her heart that caved in and admitted to her feelings.
The stone cold, bad girl, and half jock, Annie Leonhard. Had actual feelings rather than mad and annoyed, who knew. Especially with Armin, Armin Arlert wasn't the type of person she expected to fall for. He was fairly tall but he was far from tall compared to the other boys, he had darker blonde hair, and he was very smart and very very kind hearted. He was. He was different from the other guys. He was a nice change of pace for everyone. Annie couldn't hide her feelings any more. But why would a strong badie fall for a weak nerd.
Even though he was in the soccer team. He never acted like a meat head and he was always level headed. He is a very good sport and he is always "Mr.Modest" when ever someone is complementing him. Compared to all of the standards for men. Armin is the perfect guy. But many judge him for his smaller shape and smaller stature but, Annie sees past that. Even Armin sees past Annie's facade he knows deep inside she cares and she is a big softy. She just likes to hide behind something, like being afraid to let your guard down. She acts as if she is surrounded my the enime all the time. But with Armin she is different.
Annie was pacing around her room. She was having second thoughts about going with Armin. She wanted to call and cancel with him. But she knew how much she wanted this. And Armin was her first and only love she had. Of course she would want to spend the best night of thier lives together. But what if they weren't meant to be. what if Armin didn't like her that much. What if armi-
A sudden knock on the door jolted her back to reality. "Hello. Hey Annie it's us". Annie opened the apartment door to see Mina,Mikasa,Krista, and Yimr. "Guys what are you doing here". Annie carefully examined their outfits. Mikasa wore a tall black dress with a diamond bracelet and she had black gloves on. Of course she still wore Erens red scarf. Mina wore a blue dress with a diamond tiara that her boyfriend bought her she also had het hair in a bun. Krista wore a small orange dress with a cute pink bag and and a small orange bow in her hair. Yimr wore a romper instead of a dress but it had black and white polka dots on it and black stripes on the sides with her hair in a small braid.
"We came to help you. And Hitch told us you have a hot date tonight". Mina blurted out. "And obviously we want to find out who is making the rock hard Annie blush and be a mess". Said Yimr. "We also came to make you embarrassed you in front of him". Mikasa added. "You guys suck." "Ohh. You'll just adore him." Hitch said walking out of the shower. "Hey". Annie walked over and gave her a hard nudge with her elbow. "Well it just slipped out. Now get out of that robe and get into your dress"...
Hey guys. Im a bit late to Aruani week. ( the story was too long for just one post so ill make a part 2 or more if i have too) I worked very hard. And i really want you to like it.

i met a girl (girl 1) n said we should be friends cause she seemed like a sweetie
i reblogged her selfie and complimented her. if ive ever reblogged one of ur selfies u KNOW that me sayin shit like “stunning” in the tags is the fuckin norm
i saw a post from lahela, a gal i love and appreciate dearly, abt goth gfs and jock gfs
in reaction 2 that post i made a post about being a jock gal and wanting a goth gf cause yall kno i talk about gals as a concept all the time
immediately after postin that shit i was struck by divine inspiration re: my immense love of gals and polyamory so i made a follow up explainin that im not limited to one gf
next thing i know, girl 1′s friend (girl 2) comments on my second post saying “wow, this totally isn’t creepy at all.”
i dunno what the fuck she talkin about so i assume she thinks polyamory is cheating, so i respond, then she says  thanks for putting words in my mouth! but no. i was talking about you wanting [girl 1] and me as gfs because we’re goth. im all about girls and even having multiple partners, buuuut, it’s a little creepy you want specially a “goth” gf!
i make two posts in reaction cause idk about yall but i dont like bein accused of creepin on people i aint done shit to. harassment is shit i take real serious
i explain myself to girl 1 and apologize for accidentally makin her uncomfortable. she says its ok (and as yall who know me already know, thats as much confirmation as i can get)
im still feelin pissed about bein misunderstood like that and girl 2 refuses to apologize or admit she was partly in the wrong. girl 1 thinks I’M blowing this outta proportion

Found ch. 4
Chapter 4 is finished! AO3 link is here but the chapter is also posted below the cut. Lmk whatcha think! <3
Summary: Jack Kelly is a 17 year old kid who has been in the foster system for more of his life than not. By now he's given up on finding his forever family and is counting down the days until he turns 18. Four months before the deadline, Miss Medda Larkin decides she is going to adopt him.
At the end of the day, Race came and found Jack and they walked out of the school together to a nearby bench out of the flow of people-traffic. “Hey, so Medda dropped us off this mornin’ since it was the first day n’all, but usually we’re gonna hafta take the train,” said Race. “Same thing goin’ home. Ya seen Crutchie yet?”
“Nah, not yet. He’s got his classes on the otha’ side’a the buildin’ though, right, since he’s a freshman?”
“Yeah, plus he’s got the crutch ta deal with,” added Race, sitting down on the bench.
“Think we oughta go look for ‘im?” asked Jack.
Race shook his head as he pulled out a cigarette. “Nah, he knows this is where we meet. Leavin’ this spot would just get ‘im all confused once he does get here. We’ll just-” Race froze with the unlit cigarette in his lip. His eyes were locked onto something. Jack looked in the direction he was staring and saw a brunette boy with very defined muscles walking out of the same door they just came through. He didn’t notice Jack or Race as he was laughing with a big group of boys, all of them very muscular and rather attractive. Jack recognized him from his chemistry class, which he also shared with Race. He looked back at Race- he was completely mesmerized. “Racer?” asked Jack, amused. He waved his hand in front of his face, which seemed to snap him out of it.
“Sorry. What was I sayin’?” said Race. He pulled out a lighter and lit his cigarette. “Crutchie’ll find us here.”
“Who’s that guy you was makin’ googly eyes at?” asked Jack.
Race blushed as he took a drag of his cigarette. “That there is Spot Conlon. Captain of the baseball team. Member of the soccer team. Doesn’t have a clue I’s exist, obviously.”
“You ain’t neva talked to him?” asked Jack.
“He’s in our chem class, but we ain’t talked much. Last year, we had English Lit togedda. We was readin’ Shakespeare an’ he read for Romeo an’ I read for Juliet. He’s fuh-sure forgot about it by now, but that was it for me. He’s real funny though, and one’a the nicest jocks I ever meet. I just ain’t neva got the nerve to talk to ‘im forreals. Way outta my league. Pun intended.”
Jack gave a small smile. “Well, for what it’s worth, I think youz in the same league as him, fuh-sure.”
Race took a drag of his cigarette and gave a sad smile. “Thanks, Jackie.”
For a moment, there was a pause. Then Jack took a deep breath. “Listen, Racer… I gotta ask ya somethin’.”
Race looked up at him, his blue eyes sparkling beautifully in the sunlight. “Sure, what’sup, Jack?”
“Well, I was jus’ thinkin’ about earlier when youz tried to gimme ya lunch, and then told me not ta tell Medda. And then, when I didn’t take it, ya still threw it all away,” Jack said.
Race stared at him, unreactive. “What’s ya point, Jack?”
“I dunno,” he replied. “It ain’t none’a my business, and I ain’t no narc. I jus’ wanted ta ask if ya doin’ alright.”
Race took another drag of his cigarette, then tapped the ashes off the edge of the bench. He looked up at Jack and gave a smile. “Don’ worry ‘bout me, Jack. I jus’ ain’t had a big appetite today. I asked ya not ta mention it ta Medda because I ain’t wanna hurt her feelins’. That’s all. I ‘preciate youz checkin’ in, but I’m alright.”
Jack looked at him for a second. Something told him he wasn’t telling the whole truth. But he also knew that if Race didn’t want to talk about it, he wasn’t going to talk about it. Not until he was ready.
“Yeah, yeah I figured,” Jack said, laughing it off. “I jus’ thought I’d ask anyway.”
Race smiled as he took a final drag. “‘Sides, c’mon, I ain’t skinny enough ta have that kinda problem,” he joked before dropping the cigarette butt on the cement and squishing it below his foot. While he was picking it up off the ground, before Jack could say anything at all, they heard Crutchie’s voice.
“Sorry if I kept ya waitin’” said Crutchie, clearly out of breath. “We ready ta go?”
Race stood up and threw away his cigarette. “Yeah, we’re ready,” he said, picking up his backpack. “Let’s go get on that train.”
