Shining Force All HQ Quotes - JP & ENG

[translated some of these on the guide book notes anyway so why not gather them all. I avoided it because Lowe’s sexual harassment bums me out but it came up on the guide anyway so whatever at this point. I promise other characters get better stuff.

Since I did not play the JP version quotes are taken from this handy list. English screenshots are from an old playthrough of mine so Max has a different name.

Also, several active team quotes were reused (with occasional tweaks) in the GBA version and translated accurately there. I didn’t have the patience to screenshots them all but used them as reference in my own translations. That’s enough rambling so let’s go]

Luke

In the beginning, two former Bunnies had brought their full fury to play, Holy Damn, cyborg and semi-sane had brought his mighty full array to charge at the point of the Death Collectors sweep, like the blade of a man-reaper. Todd Rainey had met his charge and shattered it. Myeponym had swept his Novum into the glacier caverns, below the reaches where his old Chieftain, Christine Mainer ruled with her 40’s. His Novum’s were good, but mine were perhaps the third deadliest in known space. For four hours we fought to control the battlespace. Who controlled the key terrain features could contain the battle, channeling their own troops across to concentrate on isolated pockets of the foe. The battle for those choke points was over, and the Death’s Head was staring at the fall of night with the cold knowledge that what remained was simply the harvesting. They knew the score. On any other field they would reign supreme, know their foes trembled at their approach, but here in Division One, they walked as giants among Titans, as heroes in a land where gods and demons went to war. Magnificent as they were, it would not, could not, be enough. Melissa looked at their icons on the HQ display, her eyes reading the strategic outlay with the skill of years of command. She shuddered. “That was us once” She said. Remembering her own time as the last and the least of Division One, not fondly, but clearly. Outmatched, outgunned, with no hope of victory, no real expectation of profit, but no intention of surrendering. Nothing left but your pride as a warrior, it couldn’t change whether you lived or died, but it could change how you died. Don Lindley sucked on his beer and chuckled. “That was us yesterday” A cold laugh went around the room. Against Warlock the Spirit were equally outgunned. Perhaps the Chief could get a few wins, but even that was risky. Joe Kump looked up, toying with the knives at his wrist. His hands visibly forcing themselves to not caress the raven hilted sword at his hip. Mercenary killer or not, Sir Raven was a product of his class, and no amount of pragmatism could undo that classical education and romanticism. Todd Rainey fingered his signet ring, the charge of his own arms bright, where he rubbed it. His voice was whistful “It’s a shame they have to go out that way. Mopping up now is just a matter of fire concentration, we can do it, and they can’t. If they counter attack, its over quicker, and we use less ammo, but that is it. Shame really” The bunnies that hopped about the field encampment were a common sight, the Spirit of Bunny pilots used them to control the dumpshock when they had their mecha shot out from under them. They also served to detect clones, cyber-controlled puppets, and various other “not the human you are pretending to be” infiltrators. They were also the spirit of the clan. The sacral heart, first truth of the clan. Not the wisest animal on the earth, or other planets, but the bunnies understood the hearts of human pilots better than those pilots did themselves. They saw the hunger none would admit to, saw the wounds to the spirit they had already suffered this war, and saw the wounds they were about to inflict. Saw, and refused to allow it. With a kick, she knocked the Spirit of Bunny banner so it fell across the altar. Jumping to the altar as the pilots all turned to observe her, she nudged the AFF skull onto the banner, and planted a foreleg on top of it. Rising to her full, if small height, she raised her ears and glared a challenge at them, standing atop the Bunny banner, and AFF skull. Priest, chieftain, and madman, John quickly realized what Easter meant. This was not to be a slaughter to be forgotten as soon as you could drink yourself unconscious. This was to be a proper war. “YES! By the gods yes! Easter is right. They do not go out that way. Mariea Lindley, you are Herald of the Spirit of Bunny. You will deliver the challenge.” John was standing now, shouting, almost raving. His voice rang with excitement and you could see it catching among the waiting officers. “Pilots, join your techs, I want those machines repainted with full heraldry. Screw cammo, we wear parade colours. Personal honours, banners. I want those machines to shine like you are passing in review for the Prince of Iron his own insane self. Full dress uniform, side arms included.” Turning to the logistics staff, he spun again, his commands causing diagrams to unfold overlaying the map information directing the construction his combat engineers and logistics staff would have to begin. “Pavilions for the wounded here, and here. Pavilions for the feast here and here. Stand for the technical crews to observe to flank each one, I want full shields on those, use the ones we stole from Warlock, they are rich enough I doubt they noticed they are missing yet anyway.” Turning to his pilots he grinned at them, meeting their enthusiasm with his own. “There will be no slaughter here, we are holding a good old-fashioned war. If there is no glory to be found upon the field, by the gods we will make our own” A single mecha, a scarlet and silver Notas that blazed like the sun strode down from the Bunny held hills towards the Death Collectors lines. Its shoulder vents flared with bright flames, giving the Notas bright wings like an angel as it strode down into towards its enemy lines. In its right hand was a spear of shining crystal, its tip blazing with cold fire of an enhanced field power weapon, and from it flew the Spirit of Bunny battle banner, chased with gold and silver, hand sewn by the women of the Clan, and marked with shot and beam from years of proud battle. Moving to the front of the waiting host. The Notas cracked its cockpit, and the pilot stood to address her foes on voxcaster and loudspeaker both. Holo emitters in her Notas projected her image rendered to forty feet in height, her voice to thunder ringing off the hills. “I am Dame Mariea Lindley, Herald to the Spirit of Bunny. My Chieftain offers his respects to the Death Collectors, and lays this challenge before them” Raising her hand, she shows the metal gauntlet. Marked with the interlocking triangles of the Valknut, and the bunny sign that marked as Mainer’s personal gauntlet, she threw it to the ground in front of Colonel Roman Himmelhan, CO of General Goetz lead Regiment of the AFF. “Let Colonel Roman Himmelhan take up this gauntlet if he dares, and meet my lord on the fields of Sagrahas, with all the forces at his command. There we will do battle for possession of this land and its lordship while the sun shines. When the last light of the sun fades, you are invited to attend the feast and revels of my Clan in celebration of your valour in the days of battle that we have seen you fight already, and to honour those who joined up upon the field this day, to test their skill at arms in honest and open combat!” Roman Himmelhan looked over at General Robert C Goetz Sr, founder and lord of all the AFF. He looked at the gauntlet, and offered a quote from the Song of Solomon. “Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?” [Song of Solomon 6:10] He grinned, and nodded to Roman, adding “Trust those lunatics to use actual banners. Take the gauntlet. Let us remind them they face the best of the AFF” Roman stalked forward, cameras in the Notas now showing his image again 40 ft tall above Mariea’s Notas, microphones poised to catch his response to the challenge. Taking up the gauntlet, he raised it above his head, waved it left and right so his own troops could see it, then tucked it beneath his belt. “Let your lord know that we receive his challenge, and bid him to prepare himself. We will meet him on the plains of Sagrahas with all the forces at my command. Prepare yourself little bunny, Death is coming to dinner” And so it came to pass, two hosts, bright and terrible with banners did meet at dawn on the fields of Sagrahas. Battle raged, blows were struck, and brave knights fell in glory. Cheers of the non combatants at the bright deeds of their champions sounded loud as the crash of cannon or roar of flames, and drowned out the cries of the wounded, and the call of carrion crow. This might contradict the GBA version, where Gort has a tragic story involving the ocean, and is not thrilled to battle at sea.

Of course, disliking to fight at sea isn't the same as dislike the sea, though. At the same time, Max’s diary also portrays him as seasick, so it does feel like the writers really had different ideas on this.

As usual, Yogurt gets always the same line in japanese, while the localization decides to remove the gag and pretend he's a normal character.

Domingo:

As I’ve shown yesterday, Alef has a line set up for this HQ in the US version of the game even though she’s not normally available at this point (both screenshots above are using Debug Mode). I have now confirmed the same doesn’t happen in the JP version, where she has an empty “0“ string like the other late game characters (Torasu, Lyle, Bleu, Musashi, Hanzou, and Adam).

Finally, the JP version also has an extra tidbit about Queen Koron having sent the ship’s priest:

"I'm a priest. Queen Koron of Pao asked me to come along you in this ship. Sea voyages can be dangerous, so I hope someone like me can be of help to you."

[Note: the word Ruburan uses for mess up here, ドジ (doji), is the same he uses in a previous cutscene when referring to his failure in protecting his subordinates from Mishaela. So saying he never messes up feels like massive copium on his part.]

[put this off for a while since i feel there are less mistranslations, the dialogue in this game is mostly just abridged for ROM space reasons I suppose. Still, there’s still interesting things to see. Unfortunately there’s also even more sexual harassment gags than in the previous game, and hitting most of my favorite characters no less. Yay.

To save those characters a bit, I’ve also translated some stuff from a japanese guide book. That guide book sadly doesn’t have much in terms of character trivia and such, it’s more focused on gameplay stats only, but it does give each character a spicy quote or description for flavor (some are very ambiguous on if they’re first or third person, I’ve noted them as such). And if you stick til the end, maybe you’ll even get some words from our great leader as well? Wouldn’t that be a change of pace.

Most screenshots here are mine but I still had to take a few from RRPG as I didn’t finish my JP playthrough. That’s all the rambling I had, let’s jump to it.]

Originally Jaha says 兜の緒を締めよ, which literally means "fasten the straps of your helmet", but is meant as an expression for "be ready/be on your guard" (kinda like "buckle up" i guess, but that's more related to vehicle so it felt weird to use it). He then follows up on the literal meaning by going to fiddle with his helmet before realizing he just tied a cloth to his head instead. Which is, uh, sure a mistake one can make??? It's pretty nonsense and i didn't find an equivalent expression anyway so I took liberties with it. Do I look like I respect canon Jaha anyway.

"Oww... Is my cheek still red? I just messed around with Sarah a bit and she slapped me real hard!"

[As mascot characters often do, Kiwi has a speaking quirk of ending his sentences in kame (turtle). This stuff usually works better in japanese.]

"Neck goes in... in... I'm training... how to dodge... Neck goes in, in, like a turtle..."

The word he uses for retracting his neck is スッポン, an onomatopoeia for things fitting nicely into a hole/entrance. It can also mean softshell turtle though, and I feel it's an intentional double meaning so i added the "like a turtle" to flow into his ending quirk. Literally the only time I'm happy with how I adapted it.

The japanese word for shooting star, 流星, is made up of the kanji for flow/drift/stream and star. As far as I know any wordplay with "shooting" happening here is purely accidental and I love it.

This one is another reason I decided to bring up the guide book in this post. I find it curious that his active quote is one of the few changed in the english version for no discernible reason and happens to match the guide book quote. Obviously both are referencing his attack animation and thus could be a coincidence, but it’s still curious.
