In preparation for the upcoming manga chapters I've translated every scene with Cain, come think about this man 24/7 like me
The attack on Guardiana Castle (had already posted this one but whatever, it is the guy's debut.)
The ambush in Alterone (this one also has every scene with Khris, who was completely changed in the english version too)
Fighting Cain in Dragonia aka the reveal you were supposed to get
Cain in Prompt, possibly the most emotional one, definitely the one i'm most mad about
And lastly, the Tower of the Ancients (this one also has the scene with Alef and Torasu joining, which is not a big deal but still has notable differences if you like these characters)
#shining series#shining force#sf cain#sf max#sf khris chip#sf alef#sf torasu#sf darksol#was gonna add darksol's epic provocation from chapter 8 but screenshotting chapter 8 is a pain in the ass#and it's not relevant for the manga#and i really wanna focus on the manga for the next two chapters#almost done with chapter 4 and. you have no idea how much i want you all to see those final panels#i'm clawing at my walls. i've been wanting so much to share that since i read it

Authentic Story of the Shining Force - Saint Fencer Max - Chapter 3
Translation notes:
So, uh. Elliot's name is rendered with two t's in the og game, but a single one in the GBA version. I had never paid attention to that at all until I had already edited all these pages, and I don't care enough to change it.
Cain's sword causes an explosion here. In the game, it is indeed capable of summoning flames.
This is a perfect illustration of how I feel about these names, but I do wonder what the actual intention was, since Cain is supposed to be already gone. The original image is even cut off weirdly in the middle of the text, and i don't think it's a problem with the scan, since every scanned page has a black border showing that the paper itself doesn't cut there. I wonder about the production of this thing, but i'll wait until i translate the author's comments before saying more.
The map in the previous chapter was very accurate to the beta map of the game. The smaller map here showing Rindo however looks off, the coast is different, and there seems to be a river directly to the north of Rindo, as opposed to the path to Shade Abbey. Perhaps fitting since Shade is skipped here.
Metaphaluna, huh? Needlessly to say, the country of the gods/Ancients is called only Metapha in the final game. Also, in this panel, it pops up as an alternate reading for 前世紀 (ancient times), not the name of a country specifically. I chose to romanize the last part as "luna" for three reasons. One is that the continent of Rune is actually rendered as Lune in at least two guides. I take romanizations from JP guides with a grain of salt since they sometimes look bad/unnatural, or are inconsistent (Pelle's name for example has been romanized as both Peil or Payle depending on the book). I checked though, and town names however are consistent in both the books I've seen romanizing things. The second reason is that the beta map used at this point has a fairly noticeable crescent moon shaped island right in the middle. In the final game, we can't know exactly where Metapha is, because you only teleport there. But I wonder if this island had something to do with it at some point. The third reason is simply I saw no better reason. Metaphalna and Metapharuna would be just as valid, but don't have any meaning to them. Update: I didn't know back when I translated this, but it turns out the names "Metaphaluna" and "pseudo-magic" are also mentioned in Doom Blade, a spinoff manga done by Yoshitaka Tamaki himself (character design and one writer of the original game). This implies that these terms were really created by the game's staff, even if they are not mentioned in the actual game.
The biggest equation next to Tao as she explains the magic types is very clearly a E=mc². Look close.
I've retranslated Elliot's scenes from the game thinking it would be relevant to these notes. Now I feel it really isn't, but you get more content so you should be happy.
My main point with that is that Elliot does not say anything about Cain in the game. In the GBA version, Balbazak does try revealing Max, Cain and Darksol's identities before dying, but that's not a thing in the og. So yeah I really translated a bunch of stuff for nothing this time! Except not because Darksol is awesome in that scene and everyone should get to see it.
Now let's talk about Otrant. I have mentioned before that Otrant's gender is never explicitly said, and they speak in a mostly gender neutral way (I feel like there's a few masculine patterns in some lines, but I'm not confident enough to say for certain). What I hadn't noticed is that they also use lipstick in the games, which is probably what sparked these observations to begin with, but i'm uh, occasionally not smart. In any case, if any of these aspects were done at this point in development the artist here sure ignored them, and drew a regular old man who gets called an old man. They hate to see an androgynous boss winning.
I don't recall Otrant's third eye being called "Eye of Truth" anywhere else, but the manual of the game does say it can see the past and the future.
Otrant's naming of the Shining Force is a bit more elaborate here, but the wording is very similar to the actual game.
Finally, let's play spot the cameo!
We've got Gong, Zylo, one of the birds, and probably Anri. Easy.
Here, besides the obvious three who were actually introduced in the story, we again have a bird, Anri between Ken and Hans, Gong to the right, and Mae and Gort behind Luke. If you read the pre-release page you know that Gort was meant to be Mae's servant at some point, so this might be why they're together, or it's just coincidence because they still join around the same time in the final game. More importantly, to Ken's left we have...
Some guys. Who are these. They could be made up by the artist (there will be another case of this), but I find it curious that the artist had to do that when there are so many character to pick from, and he clearly wanted to depict official characters here. For one, there's evidence that Earnest was already designed at that point in development. However, that link also shows that Vankar didn't have a portrait by that time at least, and Vankar would have already joined by this point in the story. So could the bald centaur here be a beta Vankar, or the artist's interpretation of Vankar via unfinished art? Maybe, but just a guess in the end. Mostly I'm just fascinated by how detailed this guy is compared to even Mae and Gort's cameos. The other guy isn't so i don't think about them nearly as much.
#shining series#shining force#saint fencer max#saint fencer max translation#sf cain#sorry i mean 'giga cain'. lmao#this is what i meant when i said i was hysterical about the chapter names btw. how are these real names#also. 'what a stupid face' lol. definitely do not share any genes with this guy or whatever#he is coping#sfm max#god the battle scene is. so bad. now you get what i meant by this thing not engaging the premise right. zero group battle#he's just doing random shonen shit. fellas he's a swordsman not sonic the hedgehog. why is he dodging lasers#sfm tao cantal#in a good manga a villain telling the fire mage 'no matter how strong the flames they can be a force for good'#would be some sort of character moment#don't expect anything of it here though#also the magic thing is infuriating because it's so close to my headcanons but fails the landing into some bizarre anti-science bullshit??#mages are said to be studious everywhere else so to put a line about equations there is just wack. also manarina literally has machines#just make the point about actual environment destruction you dumbass#i wonder how masaki wachi felt on this because the spells in the GBA version often show machines (and blaze 4 is a laser)#but torasu does spout some anti-tech stuff in his HQ lines#still less bad than here tho#sf elliot#you lose something of his character by not showing the fight#but the talk is far more interesting than the game#if you removed his mentions of darksol in pao and used this after the battle i think it would be the best portrayal of him#i think about him a lot. there's the shape of a good character but it never nails the landing to me in any version#though perhaps this is more due to the characters' full acceptance of him than he himself#which is why final conflict again wins by having his own son condemn him#...and then loses again by having lynx be the worst version ever of 'villain is okay because he has Honor' in this series

Shining Force Country Guide Translation - Part 5/Final
I’ve been reminded that today (March 20th) is the anniversary of Shining Force’s original release! What a sweet time to be wrapping up this guide book, huh? this was in no way intended lmao i suck at remembering dates
say your final goodbyes to the species pie chart:

Prompt
Population: 1000 inhabitants GNP: unknown
Species Ratio:
Prompt is the country of direct descendants of the Ancients. Therefore the population is mostly human. The other species are impossible to identify, as there's no data on them. They are said to carry the blood of the previous civilization in their veins.
____
The cradle of civilization that passes on the blood of heroes
A large country in the center-south of East Rune, in the so-called Old World. It is said to have been founded around 1000 years. The founders were the few survivors of the fall of the previous civilization, but the objective of this founding according to the Book of Genesis was "the succession line of the heroes entrusted with a duty to Dark Dragon's seal". It is unknown if this is true fact or not. Historians are stuck in a dead end on this research.
It is currently an extinct volcano, but Mt. Siglas has previously caused many disasters in this land. The reason Prompt's castle also got buried underground when close to its completion was also due to a huge earthquake. Going on a bit of tangent here, the Conga basin was also formed due to a caldera from an eruption of around 7000 years ago.
Metapha, floating at the southwestern coast, has been a prosperous place of religious cultural exchange, however due to Darksol's looming threat in recent years, relations with other countries have been forbidden. Many ancient writings relating to the previous civilization have survived in Metapha. Prompt historians are the ones most infuriated at the series of incidents with Darksol.
As the Ancients were a civilization of advanced scientific knowledge, their descendants are incredibly cultured as well, but live frugal lives in order to hide it. Once a theory became established that the fall of the previous civilization was due to their scientific advancements going rogue, this tendency became stronger, and their lifestyle has fallen to what could be called primitive. The sumptuary laws proclaimed by the current king, Grando Zussa XII, are likely another reason for this.
Their main activities are farming and hunting. Of course, because the land is bad, harvest isn't plentiful. Not much of their food comes from the agriculture.
-The country is within the jungle, and not even Runefaust can pinpoint its exact location. Had Darksol been able to find it, Prompt wouldn’t be able to exist as it is. He is perhaps more trouble than any volcano...
-The people of Prompt are said to keep a stylish appearance. The way you see them in town (with unshaved faces and naked chests) is somehow disguising their suits! ...or that's the rumor that goes around. No one has confirmed its authenticity. But, it's tough to picture a stylish image from that. Sorry.
i forgot to bring this up last time but it fits better here anyway. The event section for Rudo and Dragonia has something that stood out to me:
The destined duo, Cain and the protagonist, and Darksol’s scheme
Cain has been the great archenemy to the protagonist through the first half of the game, and finally the Shining Force fights the decisive battle against him in Dragonia. When Cain is defeated, his real face behind the mask is revealed... The truth is, Cain and the protagonist were both swordsmen sent to this world with the same mission. They were meant to join forces in fighting Darksol...
“Sent to this world” is some weird phrasing that is only used here from what i’ve seen, and reminds me a lot of their different backstory in the GBA version. Everywhere else they’re just treated as descendants of a family meant to tend to Dark Dragon’s seal, which is vague enough for either interpretation. So perhaps some idea of them being from the past was already kicking in the writer’s head.
Arthur is no longer helpful at this point, but thankfully, Torasu is, and brings up a lot of Prompt's lore in his HQ dialogue, including the romanization for the volcano's name.
He does not mention the king's name though, but here's the thing. The king's name is said even in the original game, and it's Kusko. The guide might have forgotten about it here.
A basin, geography wise, seems to be a dip or depression in the earth's surface. A caldera is a hollow formed by a magma chamber emptying after an eruption. I learned more geography through this guide than through all of high school.

Runefaust
Population: 2000 inhabitants GNP: 3450 gold
Species Ratio:
The huge amount of centaurs is because, much like Guardiana, the country was created mostly by knights from the previous civilization. The population used to be 2000 inhabitants but, since Darksol arrived the army has expanded. 8000 have joined in for military affairs. ___
The rampaging nation causing international distress
The country was founded around 800 years ago, to watch over the Gate of the Ancients to the south of East Rune, just like Guardiana. The founders were mainly knights from Prompt but, this region used to have many small countries and barbarians (people whose cultures had been completely ravaged by Dark Dragon), so establishing the country was extremely rough. After called their homeland for reinforcements countless times, they finally managed to take control of the many countries in the area.
Their political system is a constitutional monarchy, but the knights are extremely influential, and thus the royals' authority weakened little by little. The current king as well, Arc Rei Ramladu VI, just lends his approval to the authoritarianism of his chancellor Darksol. In recent years the army has expanded at a remarkable rate, conquering one after another the small countries surrounding it and taking over their land. Its territory is already three times larger than it was during the previous king's rule, and it quickly became a huge military power.
On the other hand, the agricultural economy it sustained before has collapsed, and it diverged extremely from Guardiana, though they once held the same goals. All that sustains its economy now is the exploitation of conquered lands, and the tyranny of Runefaust's army as it continues to raid country after country now shows even to the west part of the continent, beyond the Lunatic Ocean.
It once had the respect of other countries as a leading power of chivalrous spirit that valued the military arts, but as mercenaries continued to come in, it became a crude belligerent nation. It seems that the knights of the past were executed. There's nothing within the country itself that can curb its military expansionism now.
-Until not long ago there were many small neighboring countries. However, they were all destroyed and annexed into Runefaust. The menacing power of a military empire can be felt from the great wall surrounding it. One can't help but be impressed as well.
-In the peaceful time before Darksol arrived, the greatest entertainment were fighting tournaments from the knights, much like in its sister country, Guardiana. Since the country was more stoic than Guardiana, there were no other forms of entertainment to note.

The stage for the final battle, the Castle of the Ancients is like this
A castle of devils, or a holy land?
The place where Dark Dragon is sealed. It was originally a facility for extracting resources from the seafloor, made by the Ancients. Being a giant building with over 10 kilometers in diameter, it took 20 years for it to be completed even with the Ancients' scientific prowess. Created with the assumption that it would be staying underwater for long periods of time, it was designed to withstand over 1000atm of pressure, and its exterior is made of a special alloy with a ceramic coating.
As the Ancients saw their civilization fall, their repurposed this facility into becoming Dark Dragon's seal, adding the defense system led by Colossus, and then sinking it to the ocean's depths. After that, they wrote a manual for the control of the facility into a single flat metal piece called "the Book of Secrets". This is final stage of "Shining Force".
-The Gate of the Ancients. There was one to the west of the Guardiana Kingdom as well, but the one pictured here is the one west of Runefaust. Within them lies a mechanism leading to the castle.
-The place you arrive at upon warping from the Gate. Lots of machines can be seen in use. It shows the power of the ancient civilization.
-The interior of the castle has a plain design. But castles bring to mind the idea of defending from foreign intruders, and it does resemble the usual buildings in that sense. Within its depths will be the final battle...

Khris [Cantaul] Class: Healer -> Priest
With a kind heart she heals her wounded allies
*** She worked as an aide to the princess of Alterone, when it came to medical care (like a personal doctor).
She rescues the protagonist from Runefaust's trap, and joins the Shining Force. Because she was treated harshly by the princess, she became withdrawn, but she used to be cheerful. ***
Given the state of things when she debuts in Alterone, she makes kind of a weak impression.
Her stats are low at the start, and you can't deny that she looks like she's gonna be a burden. But if you raise her up well, and give her good weapons, she becomes good not only at magic, but also at fighting. She can even finish off a Torch Eye just fine...
Of course, some fans might get sad at that change, thinking she looks cute running around helplessly. Well, she is also the only one to get a cute outfit after promotion, so try not to worry about the details (what?). _______
Torasu [Hobbit] Class: Healer -> Priest
The specialist in mass healing spells
*** A sage of Prompt. He and Alef faced Darksol, but were overwhelmed in power. They are saved by the protagonist.
He's pretty old but, his skills as priest are exceptionally great, and when it comes to casting the mass healing spell Aura, he's on a league of his own. ***
Because he only shows up at the end of the adventure, perhaps he makes a weak impression.
However, he easily acquires the Aura spell that other characters struggle to learn, so there's no loss in raising him.
Like the protagonist, he's a descendant of the Ancients, and from an important lineage as well. He has undergone severe training for many years for the sake of helping the protagonist in his duty to Dark Dragon's seal. Being able to use Aura while others struggle with it is a result of this training.
Since joining the Shining Force, he gets mistaken by Lowe a lot when seen from behind, and is terribly offended by it.
_______
Notes on Khris:
First of all I just want to register my massive eyeroll at that last part, if the girl becoming stronger bothers you then perish lmao
I'm sure debacle on her species' name (キャントール) isn't new, but just to throw in my cents: I'm sure at this point that they meant it as "Cantaur", that is, "canine" plus the taur suffix from centaur to mean it's mixed with human, but i hate it because it's one typo away from centaur itself and to me taur implies four legged creatures. So I go with cantaul like the GBA version did to avoid the typo problem at least, but it still doesn't make much sense lmao. This thing needed another name altogether maybe.
Notes on Torasu:
I'm very unsure if the last line is saying he gets offended or if Lowe is the offended one, my bad.

All of Torasu’s dialogue from the GBA remake. Based on Prompt’s entry on the guide book’s country guide, though as far as I’m aware, the idea of conflict between humans and non-humans is stated in the GBA version only.
#shining force#ressurection of the dark dragon#sfrodd hq dialogue#sf torasu#he might also be the only guy whose first line doesn't match with the original. maybe the original was just too generic#shame his inactive quote doesn't come out since it's the only one with a personality

All of Alef’s dialogue. She is one of the few characters changed from the guide book, since there she’s said to be from East Rune instead of near Bustoke.
Also, “Vulpes” is an adaptation of the english version, in japanese she’s still a foxling. In the english manual she’s also still a foxling, so it wasn’t a very consistent thing.
#shining force#ressurection of the dark dragon#sf alef#shining series#sfrodd hq dialogue#long post#i'm actually very happy they managed to fit this much for her since she has few battles to unlock them#since unsure of what backstory i like more lmao#the bustoke thing feels very unnecessary and part of that fantasy writer view of segregating races too much#i like having more characters from the east#and i like the precognition thing from the manual as well#also the electric pokemon thing from the guide book as well though it isn't contradicted here#in fact it fits well with her prodigy vibes here#which i do love a bunch lmao#and her studying in manarina makes sense obviously#it's just the birthplace change that bothers me a bit i guess#i'd rather she just studied in manarina then went back to work on her country in the east#until a premonition... hehe wait for it...#Prompted her to seek help and train with torasu#lmao
