They Speak the Language {Tech Boy x Reader}

You knew it was a bad idea to get involved in the war between the old gods and the new. You were somewhere in the middle, along with a couple of others, who could very well tip the scales. And it wasn’t that you believed that one side was better than the other either. But one side had someone that you cared for more than the others. And that was the dangerous, marvelous, grumpy little thing that you knew as Tech-Boy. Of course you had thought that he was a bit of a douche when you met him for the first time, shortly after his emergence into the world. Everybody did. It was a part of his charm. But deep down, yeah, there was a heart there. After all, not all technology is meant to be cold. Most of it was built to help others, or to improve lives. He just took the functional part of it a little too seriously at times.

You took a lot of rides with him in his special car. Sitting in the back with him as it drove itself - or rather, one of the faceless minions drove - around the different cities. Anywhere you wanted to go, you could. New York one minute, LA the next. Technology had no bounds, no limits, and so - neither did Tech-Boy.

“Why are you wearing your shirt like that,” You scoffed once you realized what it was that he was wearing. The jacket itself was nice, but he only had the top three buttons fastened. The rest were undone, showing off the red shirt underneath. “You look like you’re preparing for a huge dinner or something. You don’t even eat. What gives?”

You poked at his thin stomach, and he shoved your arm away. He adjusted the coat so it was exactly how he liked it, the open flaps down. “It’s the new look, y/n. Not that you know anything about what’s new.”

“Wow, someone’s being fucking harsh,” You said, folding your arms around yourself. You’d grown used to his rather ... delicate temper over the years. You knew not to take offense. “What crawled in your vape and died?”

“New Media,” He grumbled. You nodded, knowing that was a pretty good reason. The bubbly but bitchy new form of Media was a pain in the ass. You preferred the old. At least she had class. And a pretty good David Bowie impersonation.

“Say no more,” You said, sinking into the interior of the seat. You made yourself comfortable as the car went. You didn’t know where you were, nor did you know where you were going. It was more so about the journey than the destination. And with this teched-out car, the journey was definitely in style. “Just don’t forget that she owes her existence to you. Without the printing press, smartphones, internet - all that you have created - she’d be nothing. Lord it over her. I do it all the time.”

“You talk about me to her?” He asked, eyebrows shooting up towards his curls.

“More like I brag about you to her,” You snorted. “Okay, she might be a bit more superior than I am in the hierarchy, I’m barely anything, but you? Bitch is kidding herself if she thinks that she’s better than you. And guess what, you like me-”

“Barely fucking tolerate-” He muttered.

“-way more than you do her, so in her stupid face.” You didn’t allow his interruption to bother your momentum. You knew that behind that hard, technological, douchebag exterior was a heart wrapped in microchips. A soft, beating heart.

“She just doesn’t have to be so fucking smug,” He said. You could still feel anger coming off of him like heat waves. You just chuckled at his attitude - he really let things get under his skin. And he tried so hard to pretend to be this big tough guy.

“Don’t worry about it,” You said, patting his knee. “You’ll be around for the rest of time, and media is just going to be a fad. Especially her kind of media. She’ll get reborn again and again, as media changes. So -- forgedd abou-it.” You attempted your best accent, trying to sound like the Italians in the movies.

“You’re fucking horrible, you know that?” He said to you. But before he turned his head, you could just make out the corner of his lips going up into a smile. You would call that a success.

“So where are we off to, today? Silicon valley to go and mess with the nerds? Seattle to go and talk to Bill Gates? Come on, hit me with something fun.”

He just shrugged in retaliation. “I don’t feel like fucking with anyone today. I just want to .... go.”

“Okay, then let’s go...” You said, eyebrows furrowed. It really didn’t feel like it was a success anymore. He was closing off from you again, and you didn’t have any other choice but to let it happen.

You drove around for hours. There wasn’t anyway to measure the time, and the windows were permanently dark so you couldn’t see if it was day or if it was night out there. It didn’t matter. You had nowhere that you had to be, nor anywhere that you would rather go. He did slowly start to open back up. He bitched a lot, but he was well known for doing that. You would be much more concerned if he suddenly started to be positive. But he was slowly getting there.

It must be hard for him. He always provided what the people wanted, and what they needed. There was a difference between the two and he gave both. But there was always so much pressure to do more. To be better. He could outdo himself on one thing, and the next day, people would be clammering for bigger and better. He never got to actually enjoy what he gave.

Even those who had helped to bring into this world, like Media, and New Media. They came from him. They wouldn’t be here without him. And yet, they also just asked for more, more, more. They took, and they took. And gave nothing in return. They claimed some of his gifts to this world. They made it all about them. Look what I can do! If you worship me, you’re worshiping yourself! Narcissism at the touch of a button! Look at this celebrity’s ass! Look at these tits! Oh, a dick pic! Look, look, look.

What a lonely existence that he must have, you thought, as you watched him take puff after puff out of his vape. You don’t really know what he did outside of these drives with you. He never talked about it - only mentioned World and Media in passing. Not what he did with them. Not how the war plans were going. He tended to keep you separate from that part of his life.

“Fuck it,” You said, leaning forward in your seat. “Pull over.”

The driver did what he, or rather it, was told, and pulled the car over to the side of the road. You didn’t even know where you were. It could have been in a field, or a dark and creepy alley, or the suburbs of Albuquerque.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Tech asked, looking at you like you had suddenly gone insane.

“You’re acting like an asshole,” You said, shrugging, and opened your door. “And it’s honestly killing my vibe so... I’m going out to find it again.”

“Find your vibe? Here’s your vibe check-” He said, making a gun with his fingers and pointed it at you. “You’re fucking crazy.”

“And?” You got out of the car, and felt the cool night breeze on your face. It blew through your hair, and it felt pretty good after the staleness of the inside of the car. You looked at your surroundings, and grinned as you saw some lights not too far in the distance.

A movie theater. Absolutely perfect.

Tech-Boy slid out of the car as well, and stood in the middle of the street. His facial expression left you no doubts that he was doing this against his will. He didn’t want to be out here. “What the fuck are you doing?” He finally asked.

“Come on, you big grump,” You said, taking hold of his hand and started to pull his thin frame towards the theater. He grumbled, but he walked along. Once you were inside, you noticed that there was an arcade area, for those who came too early for the movie. “Let’s have some fun. You really seem like you need it.”

Eventually, you had him paying air-hockey. He only half-ass played until you scored on him three times in a row, and then his more competitive streak started to show. He was moving back and forth, using his striker to block off all of your attempts. And just when it seemed like you were slowing down, he went from defense to offense. The puck shot across the table and straight through the slot on your side. The table let out a clang, and added one to his score. You picked out the disk with amusement as you watched him do a little shimmy dance. His thin little hips stuck out of his designer jeans, making you chuckle.

“I’m still ahead, douche,” You said, putting the puck down and shooting it while he was distracted. He was quick though, and blocked it, sending it back your way.

You played five games, until best three out of five, which he ended up winning. You hadn’t let him either - that wouldn’t have been fair. You then went onto the motor-races, with the chairs and the steering wheels. This was also something that he was better at than you were, but you didn’t mind losing. It was seriously so good to hear him laugh. And to hear him say ‘fuck’ in joy when he won, rather than annoyance at someone else.

You got a bag of popcorn and some soda just to watch him play Pacman. “Little - color - fuckers -” He mumbled when they came too close to his circular, yellow character. Only to let out barks of laughter when he got the big pellet and was able to eat them down. “Eat my ass, losers.”

Eventually you were both thrown out due to Tech-Boys language, but you didn’t even care. You didn’t even know which city you were. The likelihood that you would come back was slim to none. You got back into the car, the good mood still going.

“Well, this has been fun,” You said, resting your head on top of Tech-Boy’s shoulder. You were starting to get tired - even some of the minor Gods needed to sleep at times. “I should probably go home though.”

“Okay,” Tech-Boy said, and with a snap of his fingers, the car started to head in that direction. The rest of the ride remained silent, but it was a comfortable silence. Once in a while, a little laugh slipped through as the energy of the night stayed with you.

Eventually it all came to an end as the car stopped outside of your place. You reluctantly took your head off of his shoulder, and got out of the car, but paused before you would close the door. “I’ll see you later, yeah?”

“Yeah,” He said with a nod, picking up his vape once more.

“Okay - bye Techie. Love you!”

He looked at you like you were crazy, then did a shooing motion to try to get you on your way. But you didn’t move.

“Aren’t you going to say it back?” You questioned, leaning on the top of the door as it swayed under your weight. He curled his nose at you, and then tried to dismiss you again. But you didn’t move, just stood there grinning at him. “Not gonna leave until you say it back, big guy.”

He mumbled something under his breath. You cupped your hand around your ear. “What’s that?”

“Love you too,” He said, finally in a voice loud enough for you to hear. “You fucking freak.”

“Aww, you’re such a softie,” You grinned, sticking your tongue out between your teeth. You finally closed the door and made your way up to your place, the car idling outside until you were safely through the door. Tech-Boy held up his hand to snap his fingers, but didn’t until he saw the light in your window come on. Despite being alone, he smiled, chuckled, then finally told the car to keep on going. He might as well head home - the best part of his night was over.

In the Tucson High Magnet School located in Arizona, high school students enrolled in Mexican American Studies (MAS) would start their day reciting this poem by Luis Valdez, signifying unity, oneness, and love. Their echoed words would fill their classrooms and celebrate their humanity with respect and empathy. But when the MAS program was banned and eliminated by Arizona lawmakers in 2010, it failed to silence students’ voices or deter their unity. Their passion and echoed chants caused an uproar across their communities in Arizona, and ultimately led to the rise of an Ethnic Studies movement nationwide.

The Mexican American Studies Program

Established in 1998, the Mexican American Studies (MAS) program was designed to motivate students and equip them with the tools to become agents of change within their communities. In a school district where Hispanic students made up the majority,  the MAS program was necessary to assist and guide students in reaching their full academic potential. Although it was not the first school to offer ethnic studies classes, Tucson Unified School District became the first to implement it at a district-wide level. 

And it worked. 

Over the next 13 years, the program flourished and more than 1,300 students had enrolled in these classrooms. The high school dropout rate for MAS students decreased significantly, at 2.5%, a notable contrast to the 56% drop out rates for Latino students, nationally, at that time. In addition, MAS students were found to academically improve, achieve high performing state tests, and enroll in college. 

“I had been in their classes for quite a while and when I was in their classes I was like ‘Woah! This is happening in public schools?’ Just to be in those classes, even the physical aspect and the feeling of coming into those rooms, the way they were decorated, the love from the teachers, the sense of belonging of the students was just like night and day from the rest of the school,”  states Anita Fernández, a scholar activist from Prescott College in Arizona and Director of XITO, the Xicanx Institute for Teaching and Organizing. 

In these classes, students learned about art, history, literature, government, and contemporary issues through the lens of the Mexican American experience in the U.S. 

They would participate in numerous activities, such as reading passages from Chicano authors, analyzing hip-hop/rap lyrics and connecting it to pop culture. They would write research papers about contemporary issues like poverty, school segregation, etc. 

“But I also had in the back of my mind, ‘they are going to come after you. There is no way this is going to fly…’” recalls Anita Fernández. 

HB2281 and SB1070

Sure enough, in 2008 the Mexican American Studies program became under scrutiny as a group of legislators began to openly attack the MAS program. Former state superintendent, Tom Horne, believed the Mexican American classes were meant to indoctrinate students and create hatred for other races by breeding ethnic solidarity. In 2010, with the new appointed Arizona Governor, HB2281 was signed and passed, banning the MAS program.

According to the bill, no school district or charter school in the state of Arizona, could include any programs or instructions containing the following:

1. Promotion of the overthrow of the United States government

2. Promotion of resentment toward a race or class of people 

3. Curricular design for pupils of a particular ethnic group

3. Ethnic solidarity advocacy instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals

If schools were not found compliant, the State of Arizona would withhold up to 10% of district funding, which would be restored once the schools were found compliant with the law. 

This bill was passed one month after the enactment of Arizona’s SB 1070; one of the strictest anti-immigrant laws in U.S. history. 

“[SB1070] was really, really scary and really dehumanizing as well for the families and the young people. Then, very shortly after, 2281 was signed into law which said, ‘your history and your culture are illegal. It is illegal to teach about that in this state…’ The law was really written to attack that specific program, even though it was state legislation,” explains Anita Fernández.

This was a dangerous time to be a person of color in Arizona. Not only were individuals racially profiled, stopped, and arrested, students were now restricted from learning certain subjects that taught them about agency, community involvement, and cultural pride. In fact, many books written by Mexican American authors were banned from the classrooms. Books like,  House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire, and other nationally-awarded books were banned from the classrooms.

Movement and Countermovements

As a response to this bill, Tucson, Arizona became a state of resilience. Community organizing and student-led protests infiltrated Tucson, as students pushed back on the legislator’s decisions.

On April 26, 2011, nine students had chained themselves to chairs at one of the TUSD board meetings in an act of civil disobedience to protest the banning of Mexican American Studies. Holding microphones, they sat inside the TUSD boardroom and chanted,

“When Our education is under attack, what do we do?”

“Fight back!”

These students belonged to a group called United Non-Discriminatory Individuals Demanding Our Studies (UNIDOS), a grassroots, radical youth collective founded in January 2011 to defend ethnic studies, and the MAS program in particular. UNIDOS also organized walkouts through Tucson Magnet High School, hosted educational workshops, and community-wide events. 

But the protests didn’t just stop in Arizona. 

National media coverage of the protests reached California and Texas, where they started to take matters into their own hands. In Houston, Texas, a group of Chicano writers, poets, artists, and activists, including author and professor, Tony Diaz, came together and coined the term, Librotrafricantes, book smugglers. Soon after, a caravan formed and the book smugglers traveled from San Antonio to El Paso, then, Albuquerque, and finally Tucson, handing out copies of banned books to communities and local libraries. 

In Los Angeles, California, Jose Lara, a social studies teacher raised recommendations to incorporate their own Mexican American Studies classes within LA school districts, motivated by the protests in Arizona. With the help of his campaign, other districts in San Francisco, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Ventura county explored the inclusion of ethnic studies in their curriculum. Soon after, the Los Angeles school board approved the requirement and a few weeks later, the San Francisco School board ordered every school district to offer ethnic studies. 

Meanwhile, educators back in Arizona, like Anita Fernandez, took steps to defend the curriculum.

“When the program was banned, Curtis Acosta [one of the MAS teachers] said ,‘I’m not allowed to teach Chicano literature…I have to teach Chicano literature to these young people,’ recalls, Fernández. 

Sure enough, with the help of Anita, Curtis Acosta, and former MAS educators, they continued to carry out the legacy of the program through a Sunday school platform. 

“He said,  ‘I don’t know if the youth will show up,’ and 10 youth showed up to continue taking the classes. He and I partnered together and I said, ‘What if we could get Prescott College, (where I teach), to actually award college credit for the Sunday classes?’ So they did, and that was the launch of how we continued this work that is so critical and has been so successful, outside of Arizona, because it was illegal here. This is how we started to develop, XITO, in response to the banning of the program here.”

XITO, the Xicano Institute of Teaching and Organizing serves as an urban education consulting collective where they instruct teachers and school staff on how to develop an ethnic studies curriculum. The institute’s members travel the country hosting workshops and professional development training to help communities create ethnic studies programs for their specific school districts. With the use of a culturally responsive and rehumanizing pedagogy approach, XITO creates spaces for teachers and administrators to learn the tools to establish inclusive learning environments within their own classrooms.

“It is a rebuilding, a reimagining of what education spaces look like whose knowledge is centered in those spaces and legitimacy is given to RAZA, BIPOC folks by using these method.”

Currently, Anita Fernandez and other XITO members are working with the San Jose Unified School District to design their first ethnic studies curriculum while simultaneously training teachers for these courses.

Nationwide Uprising

After a seven-year long fight, Federal Judge A. Wallace Tashima, ruled that state law (HB2281)was unconstitutional and based on racial animus in August 2017.

Although the MAS program was replaced in 2013 with  a culturally-relevant curriculum, the Tucson district does not have any plan to reimplement MAS back into the curriculum. Still, the ethnic studies protests, organizing, and resilience led to the upbringing of a push for ethnic studies nationwide.

“The whole wave of ethnic studies that we are seeing right now…they were inspired by the program in Tucson. Even though the community here has been devoid of having that opportunity, what has grown in all these other places was influenced by the banning of the program here. It really highlighted the importance of ethnic studies,” affirms Fernández.

The growth of Ethnic Studies

Texas: Mission High School became one of the first public schools in the state to offer a Mexican American studies course after the Texas State Board of Education allowed schools to include ethnic-studies curriculum.

Seattle, Washington: A growing group of students and educators in the Puget Sound region spent their summer this year designing curriculum in science, math, English, history and other subjects that focus on the experiences of people of color. 

Oregon: In 2016, Governor Kate Brown signed an ethnic studies state-wide requirement legislation, making it the only state that now offers ethnic studies curriculum in K-12.

Albuquerque, New Mexico: Launched a new ethnic studies program for all 13 of its high schools in 2017 and offer courses with Hispanic-American, African-American, Native-American, and Asian-American content.

California: Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed AB540 requiring all California State Universities to offer courses in African American, Asian American, Latino/a American and Native American studies. Now, California is pushing to establish ethnic studies as a graduation requirement for all of California’s K-12 public-school students.

They tried to bury us, they didn’t know we were seeds

Although the growing movement of ethnic studies has spread like a wildfire, the fight for ethnic studies is not over. Recently, the Trump administration ordered  federal agencies to eliminate anti-racism training focused on critical race theory and white privilege, casting these ideas as un-American and encapsulating the same narrative that dismantled the MAS program.

The Mexican American Program in the Tucson School District gave the education world a small look into what could be a future education system that speaks to students of color and their experiences. But it also gave us a look into the unintended consequences and results when taking this powerful knowledge away from students, and why today, we need it more than ever.

As Cesar Chavez once said, “Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot un-educate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.”

Today is the 28th day of December. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is great to be here with you as we close down and release into our history the final full week of the year 2019, leaving us with only three days left in our journey together through the Scriptures this year. So, we can see…we can see land. We set sail a year ago, almost and now we have…and now we are approaching the end of our journey, but we are not there. So, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's immerse ourselves in this rhythm that will lead us through the rest of this year. We’ve been reading from the Good News Translation this week, which is what we'll do today. And we’re reading from the book of Zechariah. Today, Chapters 12 and 13.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And wow! Wow! You have brought us to the end of the last full week of this year and we sit with that. So, many things that we could reflect back upon that You have done in our lives through Your word and that have happened in our lives this year, so much to think about. And that's what we do this time of year, we start looking back, the whole culture does it. It’s in or magazines, it's in our television programs, we’re reflecting back on things that happened in the last year, people that we lost in the last year, just reflecting as we prepare to move forward. And we read in the Psalms today that You take pleasure in those who honor You, those who trust in Your constant love. And as we look back over the years, we can see clearly that this is true, we can see the times that we have trusted in Your enduring love, that Your love endures forever. And we can also see times when we weren't sure about that and we can see times when we even almost lost it and just didn't know. And yet, here we are. Like we’re here and Your faithful love does endure forever. We’re here and You have brought us here through so much. And what we see in the Psalm is that You take pleasure in those who honor You and those who trust in Your constant love. We want You to take pleasure in us God. That is what our hearts long for, that You would delight in us as a Father would his children. And we see from the Psalm that You take pleasure in those who honor You and to trust in Your love. And, so, here we are contemplating what the next year might look like and the things that…the furniture that we want to rearrange in our lives for the new year and this is just blinking like a neon. It should be the thing that we want most in the new year, that You would take pleasure in us and our way of participating in that, in that collaboration will be that we honor You and trust in Your constant love for us, that we don't set our faith in an expectation of what You might do, but that we would set our affection on You and You alone no matter what You do because whatever You do is good and just and righteous and right. And, so, we must trust in Your constant love and honor You in it. Oh…that is one heck of a New Year's resolution, to set a goal that we might be Your pleasure. It's a big one but it seems that all we must do is honor and trust in Your love. And, so, Holy Spirit come. May we follow where You are leading and may we recognize that when we find ourselves in seasons of doubt and perplexed…being perplexed, most of the time we have veered from the path, we have stopped talking with You, we have stopped talking with You, we have stopped the rhythm of our lives that is leading us on the narrow path. Help us to recognize these things. You are the first person we blame on so much that You have nothing to do with. So, come Holy Spirit, take pleasure in us, may we honor You and trust in Your constant enduring love for us. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

And we’re just in preparations for the clock to strike midnight on the 31st, right? And then everything begins again. And there’s an incredible amount of preparation for that to take place. And so, we’re in the middle of that. And in many ways, you’re probably involved in the same sort of thing, thinking through how to enter into the new year by finishing this one well. And, so, definitely we’re praying for one another in that. This is the last weekend of a decade, and we’re gonna go into a new week, and before that new week is out, we’re gonna be in the new decade and in the new year. So, that brings with it an enormous amount of excitement and an enormous amount of reflection, at least for me. I look back and it's just…in some ways it's a blur, but there are…and you look back and you see those moments that really really jump out and you’re like, “that was an important thing.” Like my daughter got married this year. That was an important thing. There’s so many of those. And, so, yeah, I encourage you to do the same. It's…it's good, it's good to reflect back on God's faithfulness in our lives. And even in the difficult times. I have had a couple of really difficult times and last year that I now can look back and say God was faithful. Of course, He was. Of course, He was. He always is. Why did I endure so much suffering that was unnecessary? Of course, He was gonna be faithful. So, yeah spend some time in reflecting as we go through this weekend.

Hi DABbers, this is Lucy in Alabama I’ve been listening to Daily Audio Bible since 2015 and I’m a first-time caller. I could really use your prayers. I have been dealing with illness my entire life and never could understand why I always sick when I was growing up. It wasn’t until I was in my 30s that I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and then shortly after that common variable immune deficiency. The CVID means that I was born missing a gene that would’ve help me fight upper respiratory infections and I was born with no immunity to pneumonia. That made sense because I almost died of pneumonia when I was six. There is a treatment for the CVID and it’s almost a blessing that I was diagnosed with this because it is a treatment that adds the…what is missing in your genes, it adds it back to your blood. And I had checked with my insurance to see if they would cover it when I started another job in 2016 and they would cover it. And by hematologist discovered that my platelet count was getting high while he was checking my blood count and it just kept getting higher and higher and he stated that he needed to do a bone marrow biopsy in February of 2017. It was when I had that only marrow biopsy that he diagnosed me with Essential Thrombocythemia which is a fancy name for bone marrow cancer. I could really use your prayers. It’s hard being sick all the time. Thank you.

This is a prayer for Diane Olive Brown from Treasured Possession. Gracious heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, I lift Your daughter up to You Father God who is hurting, who…who needs to know the love, the security, the hope, the peace that only You can offer. I…last year I had made a proposal that with the word of the year that whenever we are meeting people for example when they’re giving us customer service or when we are perhaps giving customer service or when we meet someone on train or somewhere, a stranger or someone we don’t know and they ask how are you doing, last year the word was Maintain. And, so, to indicate that we are part of the Daily Audio Bible just in case they are we can say I’m maintaining. So, I think perhaps we can do it this year and say I’m settling or something to that effect, I’m getting settled, I’m focused on being settled. And I think that could be our key phrase or word that should trigger others to know that we are part of the Daily Audio Bible. Someone in the Christmas party said that her word was endure. Back in the early ‘90s, shortly after Mooney introduced the world-beater, 270 hp, M20M Bravo, I came up with a story idea I was positive couldn’t miss.

The Bravo was an outstanding design, but it was basically a simple M20 wing and fuselage, the latter, admittedly stretched, but powered by a big engine, something many Mooney lovers regarded as heretical. Mooney’s M20M was, nevertheless, a quick machine, capable of outpacing virtually all other production piston singles and twins.

I’d flown the Bravo several times, and I knew it was probably the world’s fastest piston airplane. Why not, I reasoned, install a small ferry tank in an M20M, fly from Los Angeles to Jacksonville nonstop and set a number of FAI, city-to-city, world speed records in the process?

If I could catch the late winter jetstream that sometimes drifts south and flows from coast to coast, across the southern U.S., I was positive I could set some records that would stand for years.

I knew the airplane was good for 220 knots in optimum conditions at FL250. I’d be flying light, so if I could catch even a 40-knot tailwind, I might be able to score 261 knots, the magic 300 mph.

I pitched the idea to then-Mooney president Jacques Esculier, and, to my joy, he embraced the project wholeheartedly.

He had only one condition. The Bravo had to be totally stock, so Mooney could claim in future advertising that all Bravos are record-breaking airplanes.

In other words, I’d have no ferry tank for the 2,146-mile trip. There was no way I could make that distance on the existing 89-gallon fuel supply unless I was operating in a jet stream that was truly woofing.

Since I knew I’d have to stop, I went back to the charts and decided the best route would by LA, Albuquerque, Dallas-Love (for the fuel stop); then, direct to Jacksonville. If the wind was willing, I could surpass all four existing records in class C1C (2205 lbs to 3858 lbs) and set new speeds in the unlimited class, as well. Of course, I knew that any turboprop or jet could bust the latter unlimited marks at economy cruise settings, but I was determined that my four C1C records would stand for years.

In late March of 1994, conditions were as good as they were going to get. I climbed out of Long Beach over the ocean at daybreak, circled around on my way to FL250 and came back over the Los Angeles VOR at full speed, cleared “direct Albuquerque.”

Just over seven hours later, I landed in Jacksonville with an average speed of 300.2 mph, setting new marks for LA-Albuquerque, LA-Dallas, Dallas-Jacksonville and LA-Jacksonville.

Predictably, the fastest leg was the first one, LA-Albuquerque. At one point on that first leg, I saw a 300-knot (345 mph) groundspeed. My official record speed on that leg was 338.3 mph, not bad for a single-engine piston airplane. (I have no idea why the Federation Aeronautique Internationale insists on clinging to mph when the rest of the world has long since switched to knots.)

None of this would have been possible without help from the jet steam, a band of high-speed air that blows perpetually west to east in the Northern Hemisphere between about 25,000 and 40,000 feet. As a result of Coriolis effect, the high-speed air currents prescribe a huge series of S-turns, but they circle the planet at anything between 50 and 300 mph.

Western meteorologists discovered the jet stream during WWII, when American bombers launched raids out of the Marianas to Japan and were constrained by ferocious headwinds, often as strong as 200 mph.

The Japanese were already well aware of the jet stream, and they were the first to weaponize the weather. Sometime in late 1944, they made strategic use of the strong Westerlies by launching over 6,000 balloon bombs into the troposphere. Japanese scientists hoped the balloons would ride the jet stream 4,500 miles across the Pacific to the American West Coast.

These paper balloons were totally unguided and would go wherever the wind took them. The bombs were ingeniously designed with a small, 33-pound, anti-personnel charge that Japan hoped would set the forests of the Pacific Northwest ablaze.

It’s estimated that some 600 balloon bombs actually made it to the U.S., though no one seems to know how they came up with that estimate. Only one did any damage. It fell from the sky over Bly, Oregon, in the spring of 1945, killing a woman and her five children.

A few unexploded balloon bombs have been discovered as far north as Alaska, and one was found as far east as Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In a sense, Japan was therefore responsible for launching the first Intercontinental Parachute Missiles.

Wind is so much a part of every pilot’s life that it’s often amazing how some aviators take it for granted. Of course, it can be a negative as well as a positive.

Once, in Iceland many years ago, I was delivering a Cessna 340 from Dortmund, Germany, to Palo Alto, California, for a double engine change. It was May, not usually a windy time of year, and I had been sitting on the ground in perfect weather for a week, waiting for the winds to die down.

Each morning, I’d drive to the weather office, only to be told that headwinds were still over 100 knots between Iceland and Greenland and equally strong across the Labrador Sea to Canada.

Finally, I’d had enough and decided I needed to see this for myself. I launched out of Iceland, climbed to a low 6,000 feet to avoid the worst of the wind, trimmed for cruise and watched the GPS start to count up. And watched. And watched.

It didn’t count very far. Eventually, it settled on 60 knots, and that was proof that the Icelandic weather wizards were correct. I turned back and returned to Reykjavik at 270 knots.

In Hawaii, wind offers a low-altitude benefit that’s not available everywhere. Dillingham Airfield (PHDH) on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Oahu offers a soaring school and glider rental with a twist.

The airport is far from the high airline traffic areas of Honolulu International, so Dillingham is well away from any possible conflicts with PHNL.

The small airport is especially notable for soaring enthusiasts because of its perpetual onshore Trade winds. These typically blow out of the northeast directly toward the side of the coastal mountains a few miles south of the airport.

The mountains turn the winds to strong updrafts so consistently that, if you launch from Dillingham and take a short tow to 3,000 feet, you could be virtually guaranteed excellent soaring all day along the ridge.. You could easily satisfy the five-hour endurance requirement for the SSA Silver soaring badge. (Theoretically, you could continue all night, but gliders are rarely equipped with an electrical system, so they usually have no lights.)

If wind can provide a free ride, it can also bring you back down to the ground before you’re ready.

I was flying a Malibu Jetprop from Miami to Oakland and elected to make my final fuel stop at the Albuquerque Sunport. As usual, most of New Mexico was severe clear, and KABQ’s nearly 14,000-foot runway 26, one of the longest civilian airports in the U.S., seemed to stretch to the horizon as I descended through the mountain pass that guards the eastern approach to the airport.

There was a Jet Commander on the ILS ahead, so I deliberately held the Jetprop a little above the glideslope to avoid any chance of a close encounter with his vortices.

We slid down the glideslope in formation, as if tied together by a two-mile rope. I watched the Commander close with the eastern runway threshold at what seemed a normal rate until it suddenly stopped being normal.

The airplane began to drop well below our mutual approach path toward the ground. At the same time, I saw the wings rock, and the Commander appeared to be slowing.

Next, a whorl of dust began to form just short of the runway threshold. Forewarned, I added power to raise my descent profile and saw the Commander touch down a hundred feet short of runway 26, accompanied by a large dust cloud.

A few seconds later, the tower announced, “Attention all aircraft. We have a microburst warning on the approach path to runway 26.”

The Commander rolled up onto the runway and tracked the centerline 3000 feet before turning off the active into Cutter Aviation.

Forewarned, I flew through the nearly invisible downburst at 500 feet AGL and landed 2,000 feet past the threshold. I turned off the active, and the lineman at Cutter parked me next to the Commander.

The Commander pilot was already out of the airplane and under the wing when I shut down. Fortunately, the tough little Jet Commander had survived the hit without any damage.

The wind had proven once again that it could be your best friend or your worst enemy.

Well money is tight right now and I'm shopping around for a new auto insurance. I live in CA and so far the cheapest one I've found is Mercury insurance. I was playing around with the different personal criteria having fun wondering if having a different profession or having a college degree would change the premium. I found one option significantly changed the price and that was if I selected a different location where I principally garaged my car. The premium changed by about $200 for a year of coverage. It was based on zip code and I put the one that I used while I was in college which is in northern CA but I m in southern CA. Would the insurance company ever find out about that or how would they know? I could make some excuse if it came down to it like I intended to park there since I was planning on attending graduate school there. While it hasn’t been long since she exited Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, model Yolanda Hadid is already preparing for her triumphant return to TV. In a new announcement, TV network Lifetime revealed that Yolanda would be starring on their upcoming reality show Model Moms. Media outlet Deadline reported on the upcoming show, saying, “Yolanda, along with her trusted team of experts, will put the girls and their “momagers” through an intensive eight-week training program, focused on the physical, mental and emotional wellness that it takes to build a sustainable brand. With a $5,000 weekly prize on the line to put towards their future careers, only one girl will be left standing to win a management contract with Yolanda’s company and the potential opportunity to be represented by IMG models in New York.” Essentially, the show will be similar to America’s Next Top Model. However, it will feature Yolanda guiding both up-and-coming models and their managing moms. In addition to her own success in the modeling world, Yolanda has successfully advised and supported all three of her children, as they pave their own paths as models. Yolanda’s two daughters, Bella and Gigi, are amongst the top models in the business right now and her son, Anwar, is just beginning to get into the industry as well. Yet another wave of hacks have hit the celebrities of Hollywood. Over the past while, numerous celebrities’ private photos and information have been hacked and shared online. Early this week, the hackers claimed yet another victim – this time being Demi Lovato. According to reports published on Tuesday, a series of Demi’s private photos were stolen from her Cloud account by an established group of hackers. It is claimed that some of the photos that the hackers managed to obtain included ones of Demi lying in bed with her ex-boyfriend, actor Wilmer Valderamma. In addition, various outlets claim that the hackers also got their hands on photos of Demi completely bare. While the rumor mill continues to churn out stories about the speculated intimate photos that were stolen from the songstress, Demi took to her Twitter to address the controversy head on. In a tweet posted Tuesday evening, the “Neon Lights” singer posted to her followers, “I love how everyone’s freaking out about one picture. It’s not nude, and it’s just cleavage.” The former Disney starlet went on to note, “Besides the world has seen me nude by choice before…#vanityfair.” Here, Demi is referring to her previous spread for Vanity Fair, where she went completely clothes and makeup free. Some notable stars that have fallen victim to the most recent wave of cyber hacks include Beauty and the Beast starlet Emma Watson and newlywed Amanda Seyfried. Terrence Howard, who has a history of domestic abuse, has turned over a new leaf these days. “I’ve made terrible mistakes throughout my life,” the 48-year-old “Empire” star told People. “I was dragging baggage with me that was crippling me mentally and physically. But I finally feel I can put that to rest. I can breathe again.” Howard’s childhood was rocked by numerous incidents of violence. His father, Tyrone, was jailed for fatally stabbing a man while the family waited to meet Santa Claus. Howard says he was “whooped” by his father until he was 14. The actor has also confessed to hitting his first wife, Lori, and there are multiple allegations of domestic abuse from his second wife, Michelle Ghent. Today, Howard credits the death of his mother in 2008 as well as meeting his third wife, Mira Pak, with changing his outlook on life and his behavior. The couple — who were married, divorced and reconciled — share two young kids. “Mira settled me,” Howard said. “Our marriage is effortless. Relationships are hard work, but we really don’t fight.” Weeks after meeting Pak in 2013, Howard moved to bury his past. “I gathered up my things associated with my past and found a nice hill and buried them all there,” Howard said. A week after, he popped the big question. Although Howard is in a new space in his life, he sometimes still encounters stress. “I’ll just watch a tree’s limbs sway back and forth and take my shoes off and put my hands on a tree,” Howard said of his unique stress-management technique. “It makes me feel part of the whole.” Pak, 39, has also picked up on the calmer side of her Howard. “He refuses to kill a fly,” she said. “And we’re trying to teach our kids not to pick flowers.” Howard, a father of five, followed up with his own theory: “I know in those two weeks or month of a fly’s life, that’s 80 years for them. And we smash them so quickly. I hope if someone saw me trapped, some bigger creature would help me.” Actor Shia LaBeouf is taking his controversial anti-President Trump art installation across the pond, claiming America isn’t “safe enough” for his work. The “He Will Not Divide Us” webcam exhibit has been adopted by the Liverpool-based Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, the group said Tuesday. “Events have shown that America is simply not safe enough for this artwork to exist,” LaBeouf and the other artists wrote in a statement. The project encourages people to say “He will not divide us!” into a wall-mounted camera that is live-streaming 24/7. It was launched in Queens on Inauguration Day and was supposed to run through the duration of Trump’s presidency. But the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria shut down the installation on Feb. 10, saying it became a “flashpoint of violence.” So LaBeouf moved it to Albuquerque, where it was yanked a few days later because of vandalism and gunfire Charlie Sheen knows the secrets of Hollywood, including which stars are HIV-positive. “I know who they are, but I will take that to my grave,” Sheen, 51, teased on Wednesday’s episode of “The Kyle & Jackie ‘O’ Show,” according to the Daily Mail. But Sheen, who announced his status in November 2015, did reveal the “miracle drug” he’s taking. “Here’s the absolute freaking irony — with the miracle drug that I’m on, this PRO-140, I am actually safer than most cats out there that profess to be on the tallest tree,” he quipped. The conversation also turned to the topic of Scientology. The radio hosts bluntly asked if any of his friends ever tried to lure him into the church. “Yes, actually,” the father of five stated. “There was one — and she’s a dear friend of mine. It’s Kelly Preston, who’s married to John Travolta.” Since he’s good friends with the couple, the hosts pressed Sheen about Travolta’s sexuality. They asked if he believed the rumors about Travolta and massage parlors. “I have a new rule now: If I wasn’t there, I can’t possibly harbor an opinion,” he said. Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s pioneering Funny or Die website is closing its New York offices media outlets are reporting. Staff at the nearly 10-year-old comedy site’s East Coast operation were informed that they could either relocate to its Los Angeles offices or be laid off. Insiders tell us that of the 13 staff in the NoMad location, three have decided to leave the company, and the remaining 10 staffers chose to ship out to LA. Industry site Deadline reported in August that Funny or Die — which has featured videos on its site starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Jim Carrey and Johnny Depp, and also produced the Emmy-winning “Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis” and Billy Eichner’s “Billy on the Street” — was also shuttering its Silicon Valley office and laid off 37 staffers, mainly “on the tech side.” The move came shortly after production exec Mike Farah was promoted to CEO. At the time, Farah said: “As we move into the future, we’ve decided to double down and refocus on making the kind of content that made us a household name in the first place. To accomplish that, we’ve had to reorganize and reduce our staff.” In 2015 the site expanded by opening a Washington, DC, office and in 2016 hired David Litt, a former President Obama speechwriter who was also lead joke writer for the former POTUS’ White House Correspondents’ Dinner speeches. We’re told that many among the New Yorkers who have had to move their families cross-country are less than thrilled with the sudden upheaval. The three members of staff who elected to leave the company were designers, we’re told, and the site still has a sales office in the city. That team moved into a smaller space on Wall Street. The site — which Ferrell and McKay launched in 2007 with Ferrell’s legendary “The Landord” sketch, starring McKay’s 2-year-old daughter, Pearl, as a ferocious landlord — initially moved from a Broadway space to a bigger office in NoMad in 2014. A Funny or Die rep declined to comment. Since going public with abuse claims against her producer in 2014, Kesha has gotten substantial support in the court of public opinion. She has not fared so well in actual court. Again on Tuesday, a New York judge turned down Kesha’s attempt to break her contract with Dr. Luke, rejecting a motion to file an amended complaint. The ruling from Judge Shirley Kornreich reiterates many of the points from the same judge’s earlier ruling, in April 2016, in which the singer’s claims against the producer were dismissed. Dr. Luke, the stage name for Lukasz Gottwald, filed an initial complaint against Kesha in 2014 for failing to work on a third album as required under her contract. Kesha filed a countersuit, seeking to be released from the contract on the basis of allegations that Dr. Luke had raped her and verbally abused her over the course of several years. In February 2016, Kornreich denied Kesha’s request for an injunction that would have allowed her to record an album outside of her contract. In her April 2016 ruling dismissing the countersuit, Kornreich noted that the two specific instances of sexual abuse alleged in the counterclaim each occurred before Kesha signed her contract with Dr. Luke. After the success of her first two albums, the judge noted that Kesha sought increased royalties, but Dr. Luke rejected the request. Following the string of courthouse defeats, Kesha began working on the third album last fall. Her lawyers contend that Dr. Luke continues to interfere and delay the album’s release, which Dr. Luke denies. In January, Kesha’s attorneys sought to amend her original counterclaim, again seeking to release her from the contract. “Dr. Luke has aggressively sought to financially destroy Kesha by keeping her under his control while simultaneously waging a nuclear litigation campaign against her,” her attorneys claimed. “It is a vendetta against Kesha … She is not demanding more money. Kesha asks for something far more basic: the freedom to make music without being bound indefinitely to the very producer who subjected her to years of abuse and continues that abuse to this day.” Dr. Luke’s attorneys countered that she was attempting to litigate the dispute in the media. “It was obviously designed to garner sympathetic headlines for Defendant, and further tarnish Plaintiffs, based upon false assertions and blatant mischaracterizations,” they wrote. In Tuesday’s ruling, Kornreich ruled that Kesha could not advance claims for breach of the agreement because she herself had failed to perform her obligations. The judge took note that Dr. Luke’s accountants have calculated that she owes him $1.3 million in royalties, and has not paid him since 2012. Richard Simmons‘ private life is unlike anything tabloid speculation has made it out to be. The 68-year-old fitness guru, who has not been seen in public since January 2014, laughed off allegations he is unhappy and is transitioning into a woman. “The other day I told him, ‘There are people who think you are a very overweight, depressed woman.’ And he just laughed,” Simmons’ manager, Michael Catalano, told People. “He’s trim, and he has a beard.” Rumors surfaced that the reclusive Simmons was being held hostage by longtime live-in housekeeper Teresa Reveles. Publicist Tom Estey has since called the claims a “complete load of crap.” “She takes impeccable care of Richard. She’s nothing but a blessing to him,” Estey continued. The Los Angeles Police Department visited Simmons earlier this month, confirming that the colorful personality is doing fine. “There was something about his housekeeper holding him hostage and not allowing people to see him and preventing him from making phone calls and it was all garbage, and that’s why we went out to see him. None of it is true,” Detective Kevin Becker told the magazine. “The fact of the matter is we went out and talked to him, he is fine, nobody is holding him hostage. He is doing exactly what he wants to do.” While Simmons’ fan base may yearn to see him again one day, brother Lenny Simmons, 70, said his sibling prefers the secluded lifestyle, having spent 40-some years in the spotlight. “My brother is fine. He calls me every Sunday, and we have a nice conversation — it’s not me calling him, that’s him calling me,” Lenny explained. “He’s always been the way he is now. He’s always had his quiet time. It’s just that people only saw one aspect of him, and now that they aren’t seeing that, they thinking that something has happened, that something is wrong.” Though Simmons was hospitalized for dehydration 2016, he phoned “Entertainment Tonight” with an update last March. “No one should be worried about me … The people that surround me are wonderful people who take great care of me,” Simmons said. Simmons now dedicates his time to primetime television — specifically “60 Minutes” — and his garden. “After 40-odd years, he just decided that he wants to rest, and I certainly can’t blame him,” Lenny shared. “It’s his decision not to be seen.” If you have been Keeping Up with the Kardashians (i.e. watching their weekly reality show) this season, you may have noticed that the youngest sister, Kylie Jenner, has been notably absent. While the season just started 2 weeks ago, it is unusual for the show to completely skip over Kylie’s perspective on the ongoing family drama. In contrast to media reports saying that the makeup mogul is looking to distance herself from television, a source close to Kylie just recently revealed that the starlet is actually in the midst of developing her very own TV show. According to the source, Kylie is putting together a weekly show that gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at her ever-growing makeup empire, Kylie Cosmetics. The source told media tabloids, “Kylie is so excited [about getting her own show]…It’s going to be all about building her business and hiring people for her team.” While Kylie has already accomplished so much in regards to her makeup business, the 19-year-old continues to expand her reach. Just recently, Kylie opened up 2 pop-up stores, one in Los Angeles and one in New York, which both drew hundreds of fans on their opening day. This isn’t the first time there has been speculation surrounding Kylie and a possible spin-off show. In fact, back in 2016, sources were claiming that she was already collaborating with her family’s home network, E!, on one. A source told the press at the time, “[Kylie] wants the show to be all about her…She no longer wants to do one with Kendall [Jenner].” With Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ ratings downward trend, a Kylie-centric show may be just what E! needs to regain some momentum. Move over Gaga! There is another female starlet coming to FX’s hit anthology series American Crime Story. A while back, it was confirmed that singer/actress Lady Gaga would not be playing Donatella Versace in season three of ACS. While Gaga was initially the leading candidate for the role, ACS’s creator Ryan Murphy later told fans that they were unable to fit the show’s filming in with Gaga’s hectic schedule. Fortunately, the show enlisted another strong female actress, who is bringing plenty of her own star power to the cast. Early this week, media outlets reported that Vicky Cristina Barcelona star Penelope Cruz will be taking on the role of Donatella in season three of American Crime Story. Penelope will be helping Ryan, and the rest of the show’s crew, explore the murder of Gianni Versace (who will be portrayed by Edgar Ramirez), who was found dead on the steps of his Miami Beach home. It was later determined that serial killer Andrew Cunanan (who will be portrayed by Darren Criss) was responsible for the highly publicized murder. While they have gone about being in the spotlight in different ways, there are plenty of things that One Direction’s Liam Payne has in common with pop singer Justin Bieber. Pulling from some of the commonalities present within their whirlwind lives and careers, Liam admitted that he previously reached out to Justin Bieber. The boy band member recently told Rollacoaster magazine that he felt obligated to offer his support to Justin when he was going through a notably tough time. In his interview with the publication, Liam gushed, “[Justin Bieber’s] a great guy - inside there’s a really good heart.” Liam went on to reveal that he previously gave Justin his cell number just in case Justin needed someone to talk to - particularly, someone who understood the craziness of Hollywood and show business. Liam explained, “I said [to Justin], ‘Look, the difference between me and you is I had four different boys going through the same thing to look to.’ [Justin] didn't have that.” The “Story of My Life” crooner added, “I said to him, ‘Take my number and any time you want a chat, let me know as I’m here and I understand exactly what you’re going through and I understand your world.’” While Liam did not disclose whether or not Justin actually took him up on his offer, he did further sympathize with how overwhelming Justin’s life must be. Liam told the magazine, “[Justin] needs somebody [that knows what he is going through] and in [a similar] position.” Disney starlet Demi Lovato has certainly come a long way over the past 5 year. Last week, the star celebrated her fifth year of sobriety. You may remember, back in 2012, Demi shocked her young Disney fans when she checked into a rehabilitation centre. While there, the singer got treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, as well as issues relating to her mental health and eating habits. Last Saturday, Demi proudly celebrated her 5 years of sobriety. In doing so, the talented songstress drove around Los Angeles and hand-delivered check donations to a number of admirable charities. Some of the causes that Demi offered her financial support to included: LGBTQ, animal rescue and adoption rights. On Wednesday, a few days before she ventured on her drive of goodwill, the star took to her Instagram to share her sobriety milestone with fans and followers. Alongside a picture of her Twelve Steps milestone details, the “Neon Lights” artist captioned, “So grateful. It’s been quite the journey. So many ups and downs. So many times I wanted to relapse but sat on my hands and begged God to relieve the obsession. I’m so proud of myself, but I couldn’t have done it without my higher power (God), my family, friends and everyone else who supported me. Feeling humbled and joyful today.
