This image of a “Papago Girl” was taken by American photographer Edward Curtis in the early 20th century. Curtis photographed hundreds of Native Americans for a multi-volume set called The North American Indian. His goal was to capture traditional Indian dress and way of life that was rapidly disappearing under the influence of modern culture and pressure from the government. This is a portrait of a girl of the Tohono O’odham (Papago) people of the Southwest.

Today’s theme for National Arts & Humanities Month is Past, Present, and Future. Talk about the past, bacteria are ancient! And the Anammox process is built upon scientific discoveries from the 1930s. Present, AlexRenew (@callmemoxie) is using this process to clean the ammonium and nitrate from our wastewater. Future, Sto Len (@stoishere) is creating a body of work for a public art project with River Renew. Science and technology meet art. Follow Sto to see the evolution of his process. #Repost ・・・ Got some Anammox under the microscope finally - they are bacteria buddies that AlexRenew uses in their process to clean wastewater by naturally eating up the nitrogen pollution. First facility in America to use them actually. I’m excited to work with these lil red bugs on a collaboration 🐞🔬#alexrenew #artsalx @alexartsoffice #regram via @stoishere #showyourart2019 #nahm #scienceandart (at Alexandria, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3M9lg0hez4/?igshid=1jwf2wcvapg75

Can you guess what the people in this painting are doing? They are celebrating with a dancing dragon! The dragon is a very important creature in Chinese culture. Unlike the Western image of fierce, fire-breathing dragons, Chinese dragons are depicted as beautiful and benevolent creatures capable of bringing great success and good fortune.
According to Chinese legend, people descended from the Sacred Dragon. Associated with clouds, lightning and rain, dragons had the power to walk on land, swim in the sea and fly in the air. They symbolized power, luck, strength and success and were symbols of Chinese Emperors. Long ago, dances were performed with dragon costumes to please the dragon and ask him for rain during times of drought. Dragons were, and continue to be, seen as good, helpful and friendly spirits.
Cao Quantang, born in 1957, painted this particular artwork. Quantang is from Huxian County located in Shaanxi Province, China.  Quantang has been associated with the Huxian "peasant" painting since 1972 and he holds many honors including managing director of Shannxi Peasant Painting Association, member of Shannxi Artists Association and the first class artist of Huxian Art Academy. In 1997 Quantang won the World-Wide Artists Certification and his works were published by World View Dictionary for Calligraphy and Art.

Beginning in 1912, Anderson, Indiana painter and author, William A. Bixler (1876-1961) began painting pictures of James Whitcomb Riley's "Old Swimmin' Hole" in Greenfield, Indiana.  Paintings were given to schools all over the country who donated money to build a statue of Riley in Greenfield.  Students sold souvenir Riley pins as a fundraiser, and a school would receive a painting after it had finished raising money. Over 5000 paintings were given to schools that contributed. Each painting is of the same scene but looks slightly different than all the others.
Oh! the old swimmin'-hole! whare the crick so still and deep Looked like a baby-river that was laying half asleep, And the gurgle of the worter round the drift jest below Sounded like the laugh of something we onc't ust to know Before we could remember anything but the eyes Of the angels lookin' out as we left Paradise; But the merry days of youth is beyond our controle, And it's hard to part ferever with the old swimmin'-hole.
--James Whitcomb Riley, 1883

Starting Saturday, come by and check it out! The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a celebration of life and death that originated in Mexico. Festivities unfold over two days (10/31-11/2 this year) to remember and demonstrate love and respect for deceased family members. The center of the celebration is an altar meant to welcome spirits back to the side of the living. Oct 19 for #NAHM & #showyourart2019: #publicart. @lightcitybmore, March 2016. Ephemeral public art: projections with a #black lives matter message, the Pipelines projection at #McKeldinFountain, a beloved Baltimore public space that intersected with a useful system of raised walkways around the inner harbor. It was upsetting to be there an photograph the moment when the projections were turned off, within 10 minutes of the end of HydroPrismEchoChamber: @fluidmovementbaltimore’s Ode to McKeldin Fountain.
