PANDEMIC FLASHBACK! U-C BERKELEY, 1919

Often at the forefront of R&D, U-C Berkeley creatively responded to the “pandemic hair” challenge (circa 1919) with an “Open air barber shop.” Students, soldiers and staff traded overgrown locks and scruffy facial hair for the fashionable “high and tight.” 

And yes, there’s been considerable debate about the location, with experts weighing in that the building was the re-roofed basement floor of North Hall, current site of the Bancroft Library (building façade matches Eastern side of the Doe Library’s North Reading Room, and windows match North Hall basement windows, shown in this 1912 postcard).

So appropriate for today’s situation. My review on the Clairol Root Touch-up. This product was sent to me from Influenster for reviewing purposes. As you can see in the after photos, some of my grays were a bit stubborn. Overall, the product was fast and effective. I believe since my grays are numerous and my hair is thick, I will stick to all over color instead.

8 Common Problems with “The Home Blow Dry, points 7 and 8” 7. YOU START DRYING FROM THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD! It’s better to start at the temples, hairline, and crown then move backwards to the nape. That way you tackle the most visible parts first. Usually you start in the back, and by the time you get to the top and hairline, your hair has dried making it harder to get smooth. The front of hair tends to be the most challenging to smooth—think cows licks and short wisps they are also the most visible part of your style. By starting from the back, your hairline is bound to get frizzy, so get the hard part done first.” 8. YOU WANT VOLUME BUT DON’T GIVE YOUR ROOTS EXTRA ATTENTION. Lifting from the roots is key if you want more volume. If you don’t have a lot of time or you’re not a professional and you want volume, a great tip is to flip the hair upside down and brush it so that your roots are going the opposite direction. Do this while adding a final blast of heat with the blow-dryer. You can also use a wide-tooth comb or your hands. If you want extra volume at the crown, you can set the top of the head with larger rollers. Put in the rollers while the hair is still warm from the dryer. Pin it up and let it cool.
