Isuzu Yamada in Osaka Elegy (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1936)
Cast: Isuzu Yamada, Seiichi Takagawa, Chiyoko Ukura, Shinpachiro Asaka, Benkei Shiganoya, Yoko Umemura, Kensaku Hara, Shizuko Takizawa, Eitaro Shindo, Kunio Tamura, Takashi Shimura.  Screenplay: Yoshikata Yoda, Tadashi Fujiwara, Kenji Mizoguchi, Saburo Okada. Cinematography: Minoru Miki. Film editing: Tazuko Sakane. Music: Koichi Takagi.
It's easy to imagine Kenji Mizoguchi's Osaka Elegy remade into a 1930s "women's picture" starring Bette Davis, except that nothing made in Hollywood under the infantilizing Production Code would have had the depth and insight into the real problems of women that Mizoguchi's film does. Mizoguchi's direction frames the story elegantly: He begins with a shot of the neon-lighted city, backed by the pop standard "Stairway to the Stars" on the soundtrack, as day gradually breaks and the glamour of the neon fades into the drab reality of the daytime city. We go to the home of Sonosuke Asai (Benkei Shiganoya), the head of a large pharmaceuticals company, where he berates the maids for small infractions and quarrels with his shrewish wife, Sumiko (Yoko Umemura). The opening sets a tone of disillusionment that pervades the entire film, which becomes a sharp commentary on both traditional and contemporary sexual roles. The film's protagonist is Ayako (Isuzu Yamada), switchboard operator at Asai Pharmaceuticals, whom Asai wants to become his mistress. Ayako is reluctant -- she has a boyfriend, Nishimura (Kensaku Hara), another employee at the company -- but her feckless father (Shinpachiro Asaka) has been skimming from the till at work and has lost the money in the stock market. So she quits her job, lets Asai set her up in a fancy modern apartment, and sends her father the money he needs. After Asai's wife uncovers the arrangement, a friend of Asai's, Fujino (Eitaro Shindo), tries to move in on Ayako. But Ayako reconnects with Nishimura, who proposes to her. Uncertain how he will respond to the truth about her life -- she has told him she works in a beauty parlor -- she postpones her answer. Then she learns from her younger sister that their brother is being forced to drop out of the university because her father can't pay the tuition. She gets the money by pretending to yield to Fujino's advances, but runs to Nishimura and agrees to marry him, while also confessing her liaison with Asai. As Nishimura is pondering this information, a furious Fujino arrives and after being turned away, calls the police, charging her with theft. Nishimura cravenly tells the police that he was innocently dragged into the affair by Ayako, but because it's her first offense she is released into her father's custody. Her family, whose money problems she has dutifully solved, shuns her and her brother calls her a "delinquent." Ayako walks out into the night and we follow her to a bridge, where she looks down into the trash-filled waters. But as we wonder if she is going to commit suicide, the family doctor, who has been present at several of the crisis points in her story, happens to meet her on the bridge. She asks him if there is a cure for delinquency, and when he says no, she accepts the judgment and, holding her head high, walks away toward the camera. Yamada's terrific performance was one of several she gave for Mizoguchi, establishing her as a specialist in strong female roles -- she is perhaps best-known by Western audiences as the Lady Macbeth equivalent in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood (1957).

Kikazaru Koi niha Riyuu ga Atte Ep 9
Hasa Ayake (Anne Nakamura) is upset that her artwork did not get through as she hoped and is unsure whether to push on or to give up.  Shun Fujino (Ryusei Yokohama) is plagued by the failures of the past in running his own restaurant that he hesitates to open a new one for the second time. Mashiba Kurumi (Haruna Kawaguchi) thought she finally found something she loves until her followers turned to haters putting all her efforts to waste.
Kobayashi Reiji (Namase Katsuhisa) who is hospitalized due to a surgery had quitted his job many years ago to be a professional gamer and did not regret it.
So Hasa Ayake asked Kobayashi Reiji if it’s all worth it, chasing your dreams, to which he replied there will be a cost but it’s better to try than regret not trying.
We all find ourselves at the crossroads from time to time, wondering whether we should stay on course or make a career switch?
Try harder or give up and move on to something new? How to know whether the path we’re on is the right one or the wrong one?
Whether to quit or take a break? Because at the end of the day, everything requires a struggle, so might as well struggle doing something you love?
But what if that something which you love so much tend to disappoint and upsets you in the end? Where will you go then?

Hanako’s Class:
Yuta Sato, 23 FC: Yuki Yamada - deceased
Tumblr media
Three years older than Hanako, Sato started his education at aged 7, and graduated when he was 19 after 12 years of training. His self control is his weakness, prone to anger and finding satisfaction in combat. He was usually assigned to clients with organised crime connections. At the age of 23 he was killed by Hachiro Kimura for failing to protect a client’s life. He was buried in an anonymous grave for his failures. Years of active service: 4
Atsumu Fujino, 27 FC: Keira Machida - active
Tumblr media
Fujino was a trainee for 14 years, between the ages of 6 and 20, when he graduated. Naturally intelligent but not athletic, his struggle to gain muscle was what held him back for most of his teens. He’s a natural leader, which is why his assignments tend to focus around businessmen & children of important people. Years of active service: 7
Shirō Iwasaki, 26 FC: Shun Oguri - deceased
Tumblr media
Once Phobos Japan’s golden boy, Iwasaki was a powerful and promising trainee from his first day, when he was 5 years old. He graduated after 12 years of training at aged 17, and was quickly sought after for his athleticism, strength and intimidating nature. He was shot dead aged 26 after nine years of active service by an assassin hired to kill his client. The client survived, and Iwasaki received full honours at his funeral.
Hiro Sakai, 26 FC: Go Ayano - active
Tumblr media
First brought to the Hokkaido school aged 8, it was difficult to fully mould Sakai into an effective guard. His previous experiences of the outside world, and the mental scars left by his upbringing made him combative and insolent for much of his youth. Never the favourite he harbours resentment for his fellow trainees to this day, although he has been an active bodyguard for 5 years. Assigned to the more lethal of their clientele, he is yet to be given an apparent, despite reaching the age threshold.
Hanako Kimura, 22 FC: Kim Dami - active
Tumblr media
Dropped anonymously at the gates of the Hokkaido school, not much is known about the circumstances of Kimura’s birth, despite the note attached to her jacket informing the school of her blood type and age. The youngest trainee ever in Phobos’ history, she graduated at age 16, and has a wide reach of clients. Often overlooked for her gender and build, she is nevertheless primed to be another member of the council once she retires from active duty - should she survive that long. Years of active service: 6

How was utsubora if I may ask? I've seen images of this manga a lot but idk about the plot
asumiko nakamura is definitely a very iffy mangaka with some of the BL stuff she’s done so tbh i was pretty wary picking it up, but her gorgeous art and the focus of the plot on literature and writing drew me in.
utsubora is essentially a treatise on the nature of plagarism and authorship. the suicide of a character, the novelist aki fujino, is central to the plot, so be aware if that’s a trigger. following this, her relationship--both personal and professional--to another novelist, shun mizorogi, is brought into focus, and with it so is her relationship with a young woman named sakura miki who introduces herself as aki’s twin sister.
the story is told in a nonlinear fashion, and the reconstruction of the events into a chronology is part of the reader’s interperetive task, similarly to the not simple (natsume ono) or nijigahara holograph (inio asano). it’s definitely hard to follow at times, and quite purposefully so—but imo it languishes in its ambiguity in a way that crosses the line into something at times needlessly masturbatory (and i’m not talking about the sex scenes, which are also plentiful). but i did enjoy it overall. the identities of the characters and their true relationships to one another are the central mystery of the series. they all appear to play certain “roles” in one another’s lives at first, but as more is revealed through flashbacks you see contradictions begin to peek through and are forced to question each of their true natures.

Thoughts on Kikazaru Koi niha Riyuu ga Atte (Why I Dress Up For Love)
Tumblr media
If you’re looking for something relatable, heart-warming drama with a strong female character, this dorama is perfect for you. Mashiba Karumi (Haruna Kawaguchi) works as a publicist for an interior design company, “el Arco Iris”. She's a fashionista who cares a lot about her appearance and what others think. She works hard to gain the admiration of her coworkers and boss, Hayama Shogo, who she secretly likes. However, she got evicted from her apartment, but her friend Koko Saotome (Yui Natsukawa) offered her to stay with her unknowingly that the luxury apartment is a share house shared by three other people: Shun Fujino (Ryusei Yokohama), who is a food truck owner and a minimalist, Haruto Terai (Ryuhei Maruyama), who does online counseling, and Ayaka Hase (Anne Nakamura), who is an artist.
This drama is very inspiring and relatable especially when you’re on your independent adult life trying to be successful in life. It has an amazing life lesson that will make you think about what you really love and want to do in your life. It will open your eyes to the society we are living in. The relationship between the housemates is so precious that you will cheer on their individual and romantic life. Mashiba and Fujino have a good number of romantic scenes that are not cringey and have amazing progress at the end of the series.

Kikazaru Koi niha Riyuu ga Atte Ep 1
Mashiba Kurumi (Kawaguchi Haruna) is a cheerful public relations officer who is a popular fashionista on social media and cares deeply about what others think of her. Fujino Shun (Yokohama Ryusei) is a minimalist chef who just wants to keep things simple, including his life and doesn’t like the idea of being obsessed over social media and mobile phones. The two ended up renting their respective room in a same house and clashed over their differences in personalities and preferences.

Kikazaru Koi niha Riyuu ga Atte (2021) Ep 3
Mashiba Kurumi (Haruna Kawaguchi) discovers the joy of digital detox the hard way thanks to Fujino Shun (Ryusei Yokohama) who forced her to leave her phone and her worries of her employees at work citing the dangers of micro-management based on his past experience running his own restaurant.
Although she dislikes him in the beginning due to his simplistic carefree views on life and his minimalist lifestyle, which contrasts her busy work life, she finally understands the appeal of living life simply and enjoy the simple things in life like wearing comfortable clothing without the need to impress anyone.
