The Downieville Classic Recap

The High Sierra’s in California treat the world to some of the best biking, hiking, horse riding and outdoor experiences. For the past 24 years, the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship has been giving bike riders across the world a race-paced tour around the town of Downieville, California. Though it has had a few different names what we now know as The Downieville Classic pits riders against some of the toughest terrain the Sierra Mountains has to offer. It includes a cross country race on Saturday and a downhill race on Sunday. This is the second stop for BikeFlights.com with The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, and after this weekend we’re already looking forward to Grinduro. 

BikeFlights.com’s West Coast Marketing Manager Colin Blanchard got the lucky duty of getting to town a little early to get in some riding before the festivities began.

We linked up local shredder Sammi Runnels for a tour of the cross country course.

Along for the ride was Rocky Mountain Pro rider Bradyn Lange.

While Colin and crew took on the cross country course, BikeFlights.com Ambassador Tobin Ortenblad took a rip down the downhill course.

No Downieville ride is complete without taking a dip in one of the many swimming holes. Just before the start of the festival Paul Components puts on one of the best group rides down the downhill course. Linking up with friends from all over, we joined in a party train down the fast course.

With all the fun had it was time for the racing. BikeFlights.com had many Ambassadors in the field with quite a few of them charging the cross country course to take some podium spots.

Ambassadors from Bear Development, Haley Randel and Isabella Heinmann took first and third respectively in the expert junior women’s 13-18 category.

Also from Bear Development, Toby Coughlan and Skye Ricci took first and third in the expert junior men’s 13-18 field.

In the pro men’s field we had Geoff Kabush take second with Henry Nadell a close third.

There was more than just bike racing happening in Downieville; there’s also a big air lake jump competition. 

Sadly for day two of racing on the downhill course there were all sorts of mechanicals with both Henry and Geoff getting flats.

Though his race was spoiled, Henry couldn’t stop smiling after having a blast!

Like Henry everyone left Downieville with huge smiles, we can’t wait for next year and for Grinduro later this year.
