✊🏿⚖📷📃#ArtIsAWeapon Today's #history lesson by #author #journalist #documentarian @aleliabundles, the great-great granddaughter of #MadamCJWalker - Reposted from @aleliabundles On July 28, 1917 Madam Walker was among the members of the executive committee of the #NAACP's New York chapter who helped organize the #SilentProtestParade. More than 10,000 Black New Yorkers marched up Fifth Avenue in response to the recent East St. Louis massacre of more than three dozen Black residents at the hands of white attackers. It was an incident that created a reaction on the magnitude of the mobilization after the murder of George Floyd. A few days later, Madam Walker joined other Harlem activists who traveled from New York to Washington, DC to present this petition to President Woodrow Wilson urging him to support legislation to make lynching a federal crime. Having screened the extremely racist movie "Birth of a Nation" two years earlier at the White House and having instituted a policy of segregated federal offices soon after he moved into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Wilson was not at all receptive to a group of African American leaders. The “#SilentProtestParade,” as it came to be known, was the #FirstMassAfricanAmericanDemonstration of its kind and marked a watershed moment in the #History of the #CivilRightsMovement. The #WomenAndChildren wore all #White. The #Men dressed in #Black.
