The thing about Liam and Mason being compared to Jackson and Danny is that their roles, upon being introduced, are identical, but their core personalities and motivations are wildly different.

They begin to differ greatly when you consider Jackson is actually very sharp and perceptive (eg immediately knows Argent means silver in French) while Liam is more oblivious and naive (eg his whole thing with “I fell in a hole”). Their arcs are also inverse of each other once the initial season 4 lacrosse conflict ends, with Jackson at the top needing to learn humility and with Liam at the bottom needing to learn leadership. If your fic needs an asshole smart jock ready to be knocked off his pedestal, you can use Jackson, but if it needs a locked in chihuahua with a bone to pick, you’d go for Liam.

Mason is a Danny clone in that he’s the gay PoC best friend to the white boy feuding with Scott. They’re also both technically the brains of the friend duo. Danny is a hacker pro with technology (an aspect of intellect that Jackson is not proficient in) while Mason loves to study and learn (the bar is very low for Liam and not just because he’s short). Where Danny and Mason begin to differ is in their willingness to cooperate with other people. Even though “everyone likes Danny,” Danny is shown primarily as reclusive and cynical, keeping his secrets tight to his chest. Meanwhile, Mason is an outgoing extrovert who’s able to get his entire freshman year to arrive at an impromptu lake house party with a single text. He also consistently tries to help others with the knowledge he gains (eg contributing kitsune lore for Kira, leading a Physics study group for Corey, etc). On a narrative level, Danny is reluctant to participate in the plot while Mason takes over the pack detective role in season 6A after Stiles goes MIA. If your fic needs a lone wolf superbrain, your best bet is Danny, but if it needs a social cinnamon roll information sponge, that’d be Mason’s expertise.

First 2 hours with Venture

So i decided at the beginning of this season that I would learn Venture in competitive because I am a monster of a person and I don't have much to lose that I can't gain back.

Venture is pretty sweet when the comp and the map supports them. I have noticed a few things initially about their playstyle and where i get the most value and where I get punished the most.

Pros: They get a lot of value in KOTH maps and maps that have tighter areas/chokes (King's Row, Havana 2nd, Shambali 2nd, BlizzardWorld, Circuit Royal 3rd to name a couple)

Extremely high burst potential!

Incredible mobility that can put you into some really good positions.

Ability usage also grants overhealth which can be great to give your supports enough reaction time to what you're doing.

Let's be honest... they have one of the most joyful mannerisms for a character in the game of overwatch (I literally smile when I am playing them because of all the random voice lines)

Can be a good tank buster at times but I feel like playing them like an assassin is a better use of their kit.

Cons: Very limited range which does not work as easily on certain maps with certain comps against certain comps. Anything with long sightlines with a more passive turtle type team will have you either feeding or waiting to engage with long bouts of downtime. (Havana 1st and 3rd, Circuit Royal 1st sort of, Dorado 2nd I felt some of the pain points on)

You can be put into some very punishing positions if your team doesn't follow up on your aggression. This goes without saying that mismanagement of their abilities will also punish you depending on what you are doing.

You can be countered pretty easily by Pharah and Echo. Long range DPS heroes can also be a problem if you can't close the gap or have someone else helping you with them. Securing a kill on a good Mercy is challenging and requires the use of most of your abilities (but has a great voice line if you do kill her out of the sky).

The animation delay for tunneling seems like an eternity in a team fight.

For tanks I have really liked playing Venture with Reinhardt, Doomfist, and Junker Queen the most. If they follow up on your targets it is extremely devastating. Also, you have the ability to follow up on theirs. For DPS I like playing with a Tracer, Ashe, Echo, Mei the most. For supports I like Lucio and Kiriko but don't mind a Moira although getting vanilla Nano'd by an Ana is kinda crazy how much dmg you can actually do.

Overall I think they are a great addition to the DPS lineup. Their skill expression is very engaging and challenging but they aren't so tough that you can't get value from playing them rather plainly. I have noticed how on maps that I have good flanking routes and can sneak behind the team get a negative response from the enemy team claiming how broken they are meanwhile the moments you have to play like Brigitte they feel extremely underpowered. I feel like this a healthy balance.

I just think they are hella neat.

Below the cut I will have some highlights and potg as Venture. Mostly it is comp but I played them in a 4 stack in quick play for a couple of games with other plat+ players despite my dps being silver.

The wild part to me about the "Persephone got approved Underworld citizenship" is it took what, a week at most? Even if you want to use IRL Royal examples, someone like Megan Markle would (if she had kept up the process) still need two YEARS to get approved of it at minimum which includes a lot of paperwork and staying in the country for prolonged time, but Persephone gets it in a few days with no process? 8. Completely and utterly disappointed at LO being nominated for an Eisner again. I think Webtoon has the power to just nominate it every year and ignore all of their other series.

Listen we all know every award is just marketing and we know damn well Webtoons just pumps the with money to nominate LO but we know damn well they're giving way more money to pump up their brand now because the Batman comic is so lazily made yet was ALSO nominated for best webcomic and they're like "one of our BIGGEST HITS big ethel energy is being printed!" despite it being one of their most hated series that is lampooned for bad art and writing. anyway they need to be taxed more.

Week 1 Writeup: Big Brother feels like Big Brother again

▲ Dark days are over

Nearly five years since Big Brother UK's second "last ever" episode, the all-seeing eye returned to our screens on Sunday.

I loved - loved - Big Brother back in the Channel 4 days. Even in its darkest days (Big Brothers 8 thru 10), a properly good season was never far away (Big Brother Celebrity Hijack, Celebrity Big Brother 6, Big Brother 11).

And then Channel 5 happened to Big Brother.

The only two Channel 5 seasons I managed to get through were Big Brother 15 and Celebrity Big Brother 15, both of which were pure poison. The other ones I tried just bored me.

I've been watching Big Brother 19 - Channel 5's final season - in the run-up to ITV's reboot, and I have to admit it's a diamond in the rough. So it bodes well for this year's revival that much of the BB19 creative team is also working on BB20.

The good

There's a lot I like about this year's season.

The outdoor set is - well, it's a bit of silver MDF and a fog machine really, isn't it - but it still trumps pretty much all of Channel 4's efforts. And the House itself still blows my mind - considering this is ostensibly "just" ITV dipping its toes into the BB pool, with a six-week run on a free-to-air digital channel.

The casting is great, somehow managing to push the feelgood wokeness of BB19 even further with one of our most diverse groups of Housemates ever. Speaking of casting, one of the new hosts is great, too (AJ).

But the absolute greatest change is that the Live Stream is back for the first time in a decade! It's not on 24/7 - you'd have to go back to the Channel 4 days for that - but 23 hours a week is a big step in the right direction, and shows ITV at least has the right idea about Big Brother.

It feels so good unwinding with the Live Stream every evening, and I feel like I'm getting to know these Housemates so much better because of it. Big Brother finally feels like Big Brother again!

And, as I said before: this is ITV's inaugural toe-dipping season, so who knows what will happen in the future.

The bad

It's not all sunshine and rainbows, mind you.

What the fuck was up with those nominations, Big Brother?! They took place on Thursday, so we had to wait till Thursday's Big Brother Late & Live to find out who was up.

That gave viewers one measly day to cast their votes. For casual viewers, who aren't interested in BBLL, it would've meant finding out who was nominated, who nominated who, and who was evicted - all in the same, roughly one-hour episode.

It's quite frankly broken, and I really hope it changes in Big Brother 21. I didn't love each Housemate only giving one nomination, either - it means the obvious troublemakers will be up every week (which is exactly what happened this time) and we may well end up with bland Housemates in the final.

Presumably they've done it to try to speed things up in the highlights show - but they should probably have just copied BB11's editing, which made nominations the best they've ever been on BBUK.

Oh, and, to follow up on my earlier point: one of the new hosts is, um, not great (not AJ).

The ugly

Let me just finish off by saying the new opening titles, theme tune, and motion graphics are - frankly - rancid. There's the ghost of a good idea in there somewhere, but unfortunately it's almost impossible to make out behind multiple layers of inexplicable film grain(???) and "Free Glitch Effect Premiere Pro Beginner" google searches. 🤢

History:

Grew up being raised by her single mother. Steven was a very infrequent part of her life early on, and was not a good or loving presence and kept a firm distance.

He disappeared almost completely out of her life after the death of her half-brother, Henry, and after his reaction to her mother finding out that she both had MS and was pregnant again with River.

Showed back up when Iris was in middle school to bribe her mother into letting her and River attend a dinner with his boss, and she met the Kaiba brothers. He tried to arrange a marriage contract between her and Seto, and it became a heated battle.

Tried to put up with it to help keep an eye on Seto and Mokuba, though fought against it the best she could. The boys became like brothers to her and River.

Her Mom and Roland worked to protect the kids and eventually fell in love with each other.

Has quite a bit of trauma from Steven, as well as Gozaburo, during the time leading up to Seto taking over KaibaCorp, all that she took in an attempt to protect her siblings.'

now as for some general thoughts on the state of the game: - weapons i think are the best (overall, in meta): splash, bp, machine - weapons i think are the worst: default splat brella is easily the worst, snipewriter probably second - weapons i don’t really like fighting atm: nautilus, wiper - other notes: tainted by 4.0 thoughts already but 3.1 was a really solid place for the game to be in - not perfect but overall that was the perfect "era 1" of the game.  defs glad they're not just keeping everything the same tho

- stages i think are the best: makomart, flounder, undertow - stages i think are the worst: easily scorch, then like a 3 way tie between eeltail, brinewater and mahi (layout wise aesthetically they're all cool) - thoughts on the new maps: um'ami middle si great and i love it aesthetically but lockouts on it are kind of awful.  but that's just a general issue with this game in general at this point so.  same with manta but especially it has a lot better qol changes and a better overall feel bc it's a s2 map so it has side areas, even if they aren't perfect lol - other notes: we really need a map overhaul but instead we are suffering LMAO -- the cover/pole update was not enough tbh but at least it was SOMETHING...

I was very inspired by Edo period Japan, in particular the Rinpa school of art (which I have always loved) both in the background and the calligraphy, and the geisha/oiran traditional makeup style. The kimono idea came from an old fanfiction I read eons ago where Jadeite gifted Rei a kimono during a period of captivity in the Dark Kingdom. Since the artbook follows a similar vein, I thought it would be interesting to put her in an original design that reflected the Chaos element, and symbolized Rei’s predicament within the Chaos realm. Rei’s obi is undone, and has it’s own symbolism that adds to the story of the kimono (although it’s hard to see). Her makeup is inspired the Kyoto-based photo studio Esperanto Kokoro Kyoto Okazaki, which specializes in traditional geisha and oiran costuming and makeup. I gave Rei the more elaborate oiran makeup design (given the NSFW themes of the artbook), which make her face really glow :D. The gold calligraphy reads right-to-left the original poem written above.

The sasanqua camellia flowers she holds have a special meaning, one relevant to her emotions as well as her standing as a warrior. They also happen to be canonically Makoto’s favorite flower. The red symbolize unyielding, passionate love while the pink represents longing and long-distance love. The black and gold represent something more sinister, which begs the question…how accurate are these memories…?

A sporting account… on Tumblr?

Bit of an experiment, this. Hopefully not a mistake.

Hello. I’m Rafael. I play boccia, which is a Paralympic sport (e.g., a sport which is in the Paralympics, like goalball, wheelchair rugby, etc). It’s a cousin of pétanque, lawn bowls, curling, and all those other sports whose ancient ancestor is someone going “I bet I can get my rock closer to that pebble over there than you can get yours”. Boccia is played indoors, in a space almost exactly the same size as a badminton court, as individuals, in pairs, or teams of 3. In the UK the overwhelming emphasis is on individual play, although pairs and teams competition is growing in global significance.

I’m a member of the newly reformed England squad, run by our governing body Boccia England, and I’m classified as a BC3 athlete - that means that instead of throwing or kicking the balls, we roll them down a ramp instead. The ramp is positioned, and balls set up on it for us, by a Ramp Operator - for me, that’s either one of my personal assistants, or increasingly, my partner. The RO isn’t allowed to see what’s going on on the court, they have to keep their back to it at all times during matchplay - they’re only allowed to physically help, not tactically help.

Playing boccia changed my life - I’ve always been a competitive person but until I discovered the sport in 2012, aged 27, had not only no access to participate in sports but no idea that a sport I could meaningfully play even existed. My sporting career is a direct legacy of the 2012 London Paralympics; it was the presentation of the Boccia UK Squad at the opening ceremony which resulted in the penny dropping. I was at my first club session within a few weeks, and attended my first competition a few weeks after that - I won a bronze medal, and was hooked.

My breakout year was the 2018-2019 season; our last complete season before the pandemic brought everything to a screeching halt. That year I zoomed my way through the Heathcoat Cup national finals - our ‘second division’ competition, a precious space for beginner and improving players to learn their trade without getting steamrollered by the pros - which qualified me directly into the BE Cup Finals, which is the de facto England national championship. I won my pool, unbeaten, and ultimately came 4th, which saw me begin the 2019-2020 season ranked 5th in England, behind two international athletes and two England players.

After that came a funny couple of years; half a season and two bronze medals in BE Cup Qualifiers before the pandemic stopped everything, and then a heavily modified “Back to Boccia” season for 2021-2022, at which I won the gold medal at two of the three Back To Boccia Cup events, went and won the qualifying tournament for the German National Boccia Championships in Düsseldorf - broadening my horizons as a dual national - before being selected for my very first Boccia UK Challenger. The Challengers are events run by BUK to provide the UK national squad, and selected others from the home countries, with additional formal competition experience. At the Gloucester Challenger there were 4 Boccia UK-supported athletes; two men from the World Class Programme and two women being supported in their development with coaching and world-class equipment, including Paralympian Scott McCowan, who had come 4th in Tokyo just nine months earlier. I beat all four UK athletes, and ultimately came second to my England colleague Matt Berry. That silver medal is my greatest achievement, to date. Matt and I followed that up with another one-two finish at the special, pandemic-edition competition run within the talent pathway as a substitute for the England national championships, which resulted in my being selected for my very first UK National Championships, where I lost only to the two McCowan brothers, Paralympians both, and ultimately came 6th. Just a fortnight later I was in Berlin, where I won the silver medal in the German National Championships.

I’ve just kicked off the 2022-2023 season with a very solid 5th place at the first BE Cup qualifier competition, and I’m off up to the SMILE Boccia Open tomorrow, to train up a shiny new personal assistant as a ramp operator. Wish us luck!
