That's it. You despised Shim Jake with every fiber of your being. The one-sided hatred towards him was nothing new. Ever since first grade, you harbored a dislike for him. It wasn't just about his grades, which always seemed to outshine yours, but also the way he looked at you, causing your heart to flutter uncomfortably. You detested that feeling intensely. Stupid Jake, for eliciting such emotions within you. He shouldn't have been your seatmate or even your classmate in the first place. On the first day of school, the teacher assigned him to sit next to you, and he hadn't changed seats all the way through high school. His way of speaking, smiling, and his sweet, bubbly personality only fueled your anger, exacerbating those irritating feelings.

And then there was Jake again. Did he leave a love letter in your backpack? Indeed, he did. Did you expect him to confess his feelings? Not at all. He was just a classmate, nothing more. But deep down, you felt yourself melting and screaming. Yet, the letter was written so beautifully that your heart skipped a beat each time you reread those words for the hundredth time. You kept it in your diary, rereading it as time passed.

"I have always liked you! Even though you've threatened to punch me in the face multiple times, I still like you." In disbelief, you looked at him, blinking five times. Did he really say that? Did he make you stop in the middle of the sidewalk and face him? After a while, was he following you? Sure, he did. Stupid Jake with his nice voice. It seriously made you want to punch him, yet at the same time, hug him tightly and squeeze the life out of him for being so cute.

"I like you too, Jake, but I still want to punch you." Jake's lips formed a smile, the kind you loved to see so often.

Jake had developed a new habit of taking your hand in his and playing with your fingers. Even now, as you both watched a movie at his house, you struggled to focus on the screen. You wanted to punch him for distracting you, but those stupid feelings intervened. The heat in your face didn't help; it only made you more flustered. Always blushing and stuttering when talking to him. Even though you'd been together for months now, he still made your heart pound loudly. As his lips drew closer to your face, you felt yourself slowly drifting away from reality. He left a small kiss on your cheek, a giggle escaping his lips as he observed your flustered state. It wasn't new to him to see you react that way, but he loved teasing you about it.

Your heart melted once again. Jake took you out to watch fireworks together by the river. He hugged you from behind with his head on your shoulder and his hands around your waist. The night breeze brushed against your face. It was a lovely feeling, despite the occasional squabbles between you two. He was your little sunshine, secretly brightening your days.

"I swear, Jake, I will punch you," you threatened, only for him to burst into laughter. The whipped cream on your face made you look too comical, and he couldn't take you seriously.

Jake convinced you to do a TikTok trend with him. At first, you thought it would be fun, but with whipped cream smeared all over your face, glaring at Jake said otherwise.

"Wow, you're so scary," he laughed, pulling out his phone to take a picture of you.

"Funny, very funny, Jake," you said while heading to the bathroom to clean your face. Even as you walked away, you could still hear Jake giggling from the living room, making you smile once again, all because of your stupid Jake.

you were a natural flirt, yes, but when it came to your best friend you struggled to find that 'natural' aspect and you're always wanting to one-up him. you found it easy to fluster someone just by a couple of words, an easy, "just as sweet as you" when asked how sweet you wanted your bubble tea, or a "you look really good today" paired with soft eyes and a gentle smile was enough to have people melting. where and who did you learn this from? jake sim. the mentioned best friend.

it shouldn't be something worth raking your head for, but you were competitive by nature. when hanging around with jake, you would observe his mannerisms, his supposedly called 'techniques' but it's just how he is. his raspy voice when he talks, the laughs that rumbles from his throat and the lip bites that makes it difficult for you to look away, all of this fuss when it's just a habit of his.

it's been a while since you last saw jake, and sometimes you thank that your families are just as close since that's how it all started. you have this on going joke but also a theory that your families have decided to grow closer as a way for you and jake to 'coincidentally' fall in love. however, that theory is slowly becoming a reality.

you don't want to admit it. nor will you. not yet anyway. you're just that stubborn.

speak of the devil, you see your best friend's plaid flannel outside your window approaching your front door. you run down to greet him. is it out of excitement? sure. was it because you wanted to try and fluster him today? yes, but he doesn't need to know that.

"jake!" you squeal. it's not too irregular compared to your usual greeting, he knows how eccentric you can be and he doesn't mind it at all.

"hey pretty, haven't seen you for a hot minute." the raspiness in his voice paired with his signature smirk never failed to have you folding internally. he greets you with a side hug, something he never does, but you let that pass your thoughts.

you make your way through the kitchen for him to greet your parents, respectful as he can be — that's why they love him so much, and the reason you've fallen for him a little more each time — before continuing to sit on the swing outside.

jake sits on the swing first, patting the cushioned space beside him while his feet are still on the ground to stop the swing from moving.

"so, update me. seeing anyone recently?" he stretches his arms, leaning it along the back of the swing once you're comfortably sitting crossed-legged.

"yeah, you." you wink at him without hesitating and you both burst out laughing.

"touché. but really, no one at all?"

"not really, no one compares if I'm being honest." if there's anyone you let your walls down around, it's jake. you don't know if he's ever assumed anything between the both of you, but it wouldn't hurt to push the agenda. "how about you? been thinking about anyone?"

it was momentarily silent, listening to the birds chirping from the trees around your garden and the faint laughter between both of your parents catching up in the kitchen.

"yeah, actually." he lets out a puff of breath through his nose as a small giggle to himself. you scan his face, attentive to the his top teeth biting on his lower lip, this time it's more him suppressing a the smile fighting against him. "all the time."

"well, I'm glad they make you happy. if you're happy then I'm happy too." you attempt to nonchalantly speak your mind, but not to sound passive aggressive in the slightest.

jake hums from your response, eyes still wandering around the garden. he exaggerates a stretch until his arm wraps around your waist, pulling a gasp out of you. he leans in and whispers by your ear.

"good, because you genuinely make so happy that no one compares." his voice lingers whilst you receive chills, unbeknownst whether it's from the slight wind or that minor rasp in his voice.

"jake? wait, for real?" you turn to him and place your hand over his — still on your waist.

"yn, that's something I won't joke about. I know we were playing around in the beginning but I honestly think I've fallen too hard to go back." you giggle at his confession, as he hides his face in your neck, his chuckles vibrating against you.

he wasn't one to confess straight up. thinking about it now, you have never heard him talk about ever confessing to anyone, he finds it embarrassing solely because he doesn't know how to do it without sounding cheesy.

"so you had no idea that you're literally the person that I like?"

"no... I just thought you were flirting around because that stubborn little head of yours just doesn't like the thought of me being better than you." he leans back and laughs at your raised brow at him.

you scoff at his retort, knowing full well that it's true, but you choose to abide by it. a spontaneous idea pushes itself to the front of your head, a playful smirk crawling on your lips.

"is that so, jakey?" you lean in and imitate his previous actions as your way of flustering him. the close proximity has you steadying your breath once you realise the pounding in your ears.

"don't think you can one-up me this time, sweetheart." he replies followed by his hand cupping your jaw and placing a peck on your cheek.

you were not expecting that, but neither did he. he just wanted to play it by ear, and it played out better than expected. while you've been trying so hard to plot your flirting game, he's been figuring out how to confess to you, even prepared to sing a song for you since you've mentioned time and time again just how bad you would fold if someone sang to you. anyhow, he figured being himself and catching you off-guard was the best way, and truthfully, it was.

"j-jake, I-" still stunned, you had no idea what to say. was there even anything to say?

"baby steps, we'll take it slow because I know this is new for the both of us. but I like you a lot, yn." jake pulls out a lollipop from his pocket and places it into your open palm resting on your lap. "I remembered your favourite flavour too."

"I knew I made the right decision to fall for you." you smile at him and lean your head on his shoulder.

"who said it was a bad decision to fall for me?!" he took it to heart, even found it slightly offensive to think someone may have made you reconsider your decisions.

"no one, jakey. no one at all. you're mine now." you feel him ease into your soothing voice, and his arm wraps around you again as the realisation hits. he is yours.

That's all it took was a few minutes for Jake to fall in love with you. A complete stranger on the subway sitting across from him.

You and him took the same commute, at the same time, every day. Fate. Jake would call it. But he's fallen in love with so many people on this same subway before, people he never saw again but still wonders how they were doing or if they had something to eat for the day and not just their overpriced iced coffee that they called a meal. Now his life was with you.

And Jake saw you dancing barefoot around his living room in nothing but his T-shirt, singing along to a Patti LaBelle song that you liked since you were seven.

And on the weekends Jake eat Pad Thai with you in your small studio apartment that you couldn't really afford rent for but you somehow, always made the payments to your landlord, who was a heavy chain-smoker so your apartment smells of Newports because the landlord was also the maintenance man who needed to smoke anytime he fixed anything.

And Jake likes to think about the inside jokes you two share, the ones your friends and his never get.

And Jake reads your favorite book. The one you lent him, with the worn out cover that's barely hanging on for dear life. Pages where annotated, and Jake made a few of his own, and leaving smaller comments in places you had wrote something about what you thought of that scene, or a certain character or the way the author did a thing with words that made you feel nostalgic and longed for something you didn't know you lost.

And Jake would never shy a way from telling you how pretty your eyes are. How he saw a million versions of you just behind the subtle color of them. And he would wonder what he looked like in your eyes.

But He's a stranger. You're a stranger. Just two strangers going your separate ways when the train stops. So did his life with you.

You’re not sure where or when it started, but you were definitely in a whole that was dug way too deep. The Sims were your absolute favorite siblings. Jake’s little sister, Bella, was your bestest friend and absolute favorite person on the planet. Growing up, and even up until now, it’s always been “y/n and Bella!” Or vice versa. To make a long story short, the two of you were the same person in different fonts. You were an only child, so having Bella around was like having a sister and best friend wrapped in one. It was also a bonus that she lived across the street from you. The two of you were always at each others’ houses and you wouldn’t want it any other way. The two of you did everything together and will keep doing everything together. You two were quite literally two peas in a pod.

Jake was a year older than the both of you. Growing up, he was close with you guys. But when high school started, he made new friends and met new people. That resulted in him being around less and less. Now that you think about it, maybe that’s when it started. Once Jake started high school and you and Bella were still in junior high. Seeing him less made you miss him. Jake being on the high school’s football team also subtracted the amount of times you would see him. But you definitely only missed him because he was fun to be around, right? That was definitely the sole reason and nothing else, right? Yeah…no.

The summer after 8th grade, before you first year of high school was when you realized you missed him because you liked him. How cliche, you think. Liking your best friend’s brother? Great. You didn’t think Jake would reciprocate your feelings, so you kept them hidden. You kept your feelings hidden when he introduced everyone to his first girlfriend. You kept your feelings hidden when he dyed his hair blonde. That was very hard on you, to be honest. And you definitely kept your feelings hidden when Jake would come home from practice to hang out with you and Bella.

“Oh, word? She’s really pretty.”

“Yeah..” Jake lets out a nervous giggle, “Yeah, she is.”

“Yeah..” Jake lets out a nervous giggle, “Yeah, she is.”

“Okay, no. You guys got it all wrong. I see her like a little sister. You guys wanna protect your little sisters, no?”

Sunghoon speaks again, “Well, yeah. But who would be better for her than one of your closest friends, right?”

“Dude, for real. She’s off limits.”

“Oh, so someone else can have her, right? What about Sunoo? He’s really nice,” Jay adds in.

At this point, Jake starts feeling frustrated. Which results in him blurting out the first thing that comes into his mind.,“No way! She’s mine! What does he have that I don’t?” After he got that out, he looks at friends with realization. “Shit,” he manages to get out, “I have feelings for my little sister’s best friend.”

“We’ve literally been telling you this whole time“ heeseung tries to interject.

“Okay, okay, I get it,” Jake surrenders and the other guys start to laugh at him. “Hey! Fuck you guys!” He says while giving everyone the finger. He realizes now, that he’s in some deep shit.
