#simmons's runaway freelancer au

I was wondering about Captain Flowers. He was Florida, did Simmons have any uncomfortable encounters with the man and did Grif get the feeling of dread Everytime he was “patrolling” with Simmons because Flowers figured he was also suppose to be keeping an eye on Simmons as he knew who Simmons was and picked him with Grif?
And Simmons looks like his heart breaks easily (or something to that effect).
Or Flowers didn’t particularly care and focused solely on Church? Because Flowers has a creepy vibe even when he’s not actively hurting you.
Tumblr media
Like Simmons is mostly clueless as to why Grif is always feels like the universe is out to get him.
Runaway freelancer Simmons AU
lol! That's adorable! poor Grif! and Simmons is just so damn clueless! : ) Thank yoU!
But yeah, i don't think Simmons would have had any real encounters with Florida while in freelancer or with Flowers afterwards. I mean, i imagine Flowers probably had orders to keep an eye on Simmons (b/c the Director knew who he was and wanted to keep him close without Simmons realizing it.) But Flowers would have done that from afar, his main focus being Alpha and keeping tabs on Simmons being a secondary objective.
Therefore, i could definitely see Grif noticing that Flowers is keeping tabs on Simmons but Simmons not noticing since anytime he looks, Flowers has stopped doing it lol.
Lucky for Grif's sanity (and Simmons in general) Flowers dies pretty early on and the Director isn't able to get a proper freelancer under hsi command back into the base, so the Simmons spying would stop pretty quickly.
Thank you!!

I’m loving Freelancer! Simmons AU and I really want to know if Simmons would pretend he doesn’t recognize Carolina if she didn’t recognize him or would he say hi and then book it in the other direction?
If you’re still into RVB, I want to know :3
Thank you!
if Carolina didn't recognize him, he'd probably go along with it. He would not have wanted to draw attention to himself.
unfortunately for him, i think Carolina went to Valhalla specifically looking for him and Washington so that's not exactly an option.
I could, however, see somethign like this going down.
Carolina: Simon, what are you doing here?
Simmons: *Thinking* play dumb!
Simmons: Who's simon?
Simmons: *thinking* NOt that dumb!
ANd then he panics and darts off into the base, only to get caught a few minutes later lol.
he ends up essentially getting dragged on the 'kill the director' mission b/c he wants nothing to do with it, but feels too guilty to leave his little sister to do it alone.
and yes! I'm still into RvB! I'm not doing much with it at the moment (got hyperfixated on turtles again lol). but it's still one of the fandoms i like being involved in.
Thank you!

To incapsulate how bolth shovel talks went.
Grif, for the last time it’s both!
Grif thinks he’s picked the least dangerous family member to marry by shear luck.
But Simmons is still dangerous. He just won’t harm Girf as they are married and a dead husband is not helpful to him at all.
Something like that.
Simmons is like a house cat or something while his mom and sister are big cats. A panther and a tiger.
I guess the director is a cat too, but he’s not important.
House cats have claws and hunt for sport not hunger. They also bring back food they hunt as gifts of affection. Slow blinking…purring…. Stuff like that.
Some cats can’t purr so they slow blink. Or chuff. Simmons is maybe a cheetah (anxiety cat) that has a kind of chirp. Cheetahs get bullied in the wild and only have speed going for them.
Can you tell I’m getting cat obsessed?
I forgot what I was talking about before.
Good night!

Red Vs Blue Fics that I have written:
The second one is a Jealous Grif fic
(I write late at night and if you guys could point out anything grammatically wrong, that’d be great!)
@twicethetrouble sorry if tagging gets annoying but I’d like to tag people I write/ draw for or with, won’t do that often. (First fic is for them and their Freelancer Simmons AU)

@kaikaina-grif and I got to talking and we have decided to work together on an RvB AU we’re calling Stetsons vs Tricorns.
The Reds are cowboys in the wild west and the Blues are pirates who shipwreck on the coast of Red Territory and can’t leave because Captain Flowers has died and no one is left who can sail the ship. Set in southern Texas/northern Mexico. Character origins are as follows (as of this time b/c honestly I can’t promise these things won’t be tweaked a bit over the course of this project):
Leonard Church Sr. tries to find immortality in order to save his dying wife and duplicated his soul in the process. The duplicate, Alpha, only has faint recollections of his life as Church with Allison and is quickly stuffed into the body of a young man who resembles Church Sr. enough for Alpha to mistake it for his own body. Captain Flowers poses as a pirate and “steals objects of value” from the royal treasury of Spain - in reality he is smuggling Church Jr. to the New World until his “father” can find a use for him.
Caboose and Tucker were runaway slaves who were trying to head west to take part in the gold rush and had to stop in New Orleans where Flowers ended up recruiting them for the crew instead.
Sarge is a cattle rustler who doubles as the nearby town’s sheriff and ends up hiring Grif and Simmons to assist with his duties. The Grifs left Hawaii as they saw conflicts arising there and thought the mainland would offer a more peaceful life. The Simmons fled Ireland amidst the Potato Famine.
Lopez is a mexican rustler who traveled north - as far as Quebec - in search of work and ended up meeting a native woman, Sooleawa (Algonquin, means silver). Her tribe offered him some work and they were in close proximity much of the time. He only spoke spanish and understood english, she only spoke her native tongue and french, so they had to teach one another without a common language between them. It was a whirlwind romance and Sooleawa followed Lopez south when he set home.
While Lopez was out rustling, missionaries came to village and attempted to convert the natives to christianity against their will. Sooleawa resisted and the altercation resulted in her death. Posthumously, the priests baptized her and white-washed her name. Sheila. Her death crushed Lopez and he was taken in by Sarge. In his grief, he swore never to speak anything but spanish again in his life. Her death ‘killed’ the village- the people left, citing haunting and curses, and the missionaries with them.
Sheila was angry and refused to go to their afterlife however. She lingered and attached herself to a catapult which hadn’t seen use in some time, but it was big and she had seen them in action. She waited for the day those missionaries would return to her range. When the Blues arrived, Caboose traveled in-land looking for help (he was hopelessly lost) and stumbled across her form in the old town. She was lonely, and so manifested herself before him. He commented on her loneliness and hauled her, all on his own, onto the ship so that she would never be alone.
One day while investigating the ship sighting on the coast, Lopez tracked down the Blues. Church, who had died due to an infection and had been haunting the ship to Tucker’s displeasure, decided it was high-time for a new body and possessed Lopez. He was ready to show off his new mortal form to Tucker and Caboose and Sheila but when he saw her, Lopez shunted Church out of his body and fell to his knees before her spirit. Lopez has been re-united with his lost love.
The Reds, who had been following his trail, spotted Lopez kneeling before a catapult on the ship with the ‘dirty Blue invaders’ and assumed he had gone mad and was now one of them.
While this is happening part of the Spanish Navy, the “Freelancers” begin to investigate Captain Flowers and are determined to set out and discover what exactly it is that he stole from the treasury. Perhaps if she returns with whatever it is, Lady Carolina’s father will acknowledge her skill and make her head of the Navy (her brother can be king if he wants).
That’s all for now. Anyway, @kaikaina-grif will be making art for this AU, and I will be writing it. Please follow #StetsonsVTricorns for updates. I will try to have the first chapter out in a week or so and will re-blog this with a link when its ready.
To be clear, this isn’t an “event” or a big bang, this is just something we’re doing together and we thought you all should know so we could drag you into this new hell with us. Bwahaha.

Just imagining later down the line that it just hits everyone that Tex is Simmons’ mom too.
That the director was the dad that left him.
That church is his ???
They don’t know what the hxll to call that actually.
Just like with Carolina.
Church is like the default name they go to instead of differentiating them at first or it’s like passing the torch??
Anyways, what does Epsilon think of him? Does any one ever find out about Eta? Like it’s pretty clear Carolina and Epsilon are brother and sister. But he’s not close to Simmons like he is with her.
When she runs off without telling him on chorus….
How does he handle that? Seeing her again?
The way i usually go about the weird family relations of the ais-to-living-churchs is that the fragments (ie: everyone except Alpha and Beta) are seen as Carolina's (and any sibling i might add. this isn't my only au where carolina gets a brother lol) siblings. Alpha is essentially a clone of the Director so any AI created from him at least has honorary sibling status. Beta/tex being an exception. (she's based off of an entirely different person so she's family, but not fragment sibling.) She and Alpha both are considered family b/c they're based off of Carolina's parents, but they aren't those people so it's a little weird.
Tex, specifically, is like parent-adjacent. Like she has memories and some left over parental feelings from Alison but she knows she's not her so i think she tries to ignore said feelings for the most part. She's a little extra protective of Simmons compared to the rest of the team of red and blue idiots, well, that's no one's business.
But yeah, the realization that the person Tex is based off of, is Simmons's mom would be quite the shocker. and probably explain why she kept beating Grif up so badly lol.
Epsilon doesn't really know what to think of Simmons. Like he never met the dude in Freelancer; Simmons left before he was ever created. But he does know him from Alpha's memories, (though i think Alpha may have purposefully erased the memory of Simmons taking Eta in order to protect Eta, so Epsilon probably only knows him as the demolition tech who's related to the Director.) Therefore Epsilon doesn't really know how to interact with him, so he just kinda doesn't most of the time. (they might bond more later but pre-chorus there is little to no interaction between Simmons and Epsilon.)
Everyone does eventually find out about Eta. I can't exactly remember if i had come up with a specific instance in which that happens or not. Simmons implants Eta end of season 6, waking them up, so they're awake throughout that entire pre-chorus arc. Their existance is found out either at the end of that arc or around the beginning of the Chorus arc, i'm not entirely sure atm.
and i think, Simmons would be angry with her for disappearing like that on them. Like, he chose to follow her to the end of the 'kill-the-director mission. the thought they were growing closer again, bonding. But then she and epsilon leave them without a word?
(part of him thinks it's only fitting. He did that to her in freelancer, she has every right to return the favor.)
but then she comes back. Without even an apology and barely an acknowledgement that she was gone. yeah, i don't think he'd like that very much.
Thank you!

Late night realization:
Didn’t Simmons work with Tex at MOI? He was clean up with her. Have they ever talked? There’s so much potential there!
Ref: Runaway freelancer Simmons AU
Also how much better does Simmons thinks Sarge is as a father figure? Leaps and Bounds better?
How vague was Carolina when she gave Grif the shovel talk?
Oh god, Wash stumbling across the helmet Simmons wore at MOI and yeeting it at his head and demanding where got it (fearfully).
Something like that. Omg Simmons, Wash, and Carolina teaming up or doing some secretive shady skulking around when they aren’t actually up to anything.
Or wash gets a random nightmare about the demolition expert one night after seeing Simmons face.
Him getting fatherly for some reason because of Epsilon’s memories. Like a pat on the shoulder and the urge to threaten Grif. That’d probably be too silly to be real though.
….Grif getting jealous Simmons is hanging out with Wash and Carolina and not telling him what they’re doing or talking about.
Well they are married so there’s no way it’s anything that’d take his husband a way from him. He’s not even into Simmons like that so it doesn’t matter either way. Why does Simmons laughing and smiling with other people make him angry? Nah, can’t be him. Can’t be….. He needs a cigarette.
“Where did you even get that? I thought you ran out of cigarettes?”
“I’ll tell you if you tell me what you’re doing with those blues?”
“They’re not blues, Grif! They’re freelancers, empathize on free.”
“Just like I’m free not to tell you where I got these.”
“So there’s more than one?”
“What does that matter?”
“…”
“…”
Simmons and Grif then wrestled for the cigarette pack he’s hidden on his body. Carolina walks in. They stop.
“…”
“…”
“…”
“….Get…. THE FXCK OFF HIM!”
“It’s not what it looks like!”
“Protect me lamp!”
-Yeah! Simmons did work with Tex on occasion, mostly for, as you said, clean up/demolition work. I don't think they talked much while he was on the MOI, at least not outside the mission. I think they both recognized each other in Blood Gulch, but kinda pretended they didn't. Simmons b/c he didn't want to bring attention to himself, while Tex was like "oh, That's South Carolina. Is he trying to be covert?... I'll let him think he's being covert. I have bigger issues than a run away demolition tech."
-As for sarge, Simmons probably thinks he's like the best father figure ever lol. (then again, the only thing he has to compare to is the Director, who was very much a dick to him, so even a half-crazy old man obsessed with war is loads better than that.)
-Carolina probably wasn't very vague about her shovel talk lol. She's not exactly the subtlest when it comes to, well, anything. She probably gave him a very detailed list of what she'd do to him if he so much as thought of hurting her brother. One that would have Grif terrified of even looking the dude's way for the next week lol.
-That would be hilarious! Unfortunately Simmons blew up his old armor as a sort of 'resignation letter' when he left the MOI. So not entirely possible.
-But wash being vaguely reminded of Demolition Tech whenever he's around simmons would be funny. Like he's just sitting there half-panicking like ''Why does this guy remind me of the demoition tech. is it because he knows a lot about explosives and once mocked me for needing to use c4 to blow up a suit of armor? I know he somehow knows how to explode armor with just an alarm clock but that doesn't match Demolition Tech's skillset. Does it???" He finds out later that Simmons and Demolition Tech are the same and he's just like "That's why?! I wasn't going crazy!" lol : )
and lol!! : ) Poor Grif cannot catch a break with Carolina around. He just wants to hang out with his husband and it is not working out at all lol.
Thank you!

Oh my gosh.
Before the Director culls himself, he tells Carolina that she’s the best thing he’s ever created.
Does Simmons not exist to him anymore or does he think Simmons is still dead? What if he knew Simmons was alive but didn’t bother to get him after the whole freelancer thing got destroyed?
Gasp! Did Tex mostly just throw him really hard during that fight in the backup building where they meet FILSE. Would FILSE know who Simmons was due to a face scan? (He still has half his original face)
Gosh if FILSE joined in on the Grif dunking just because she felt it in her circuits. (She’d still mock Simmons, I mean, it’s really easy too do so) (but some Buried code, from the director when he still cared enough, made a program that actives to be an obnoxious in-law to whoever thought they were good enough for his children)
I can’t stop my self from saying this, but I hate the director more than I sympathize with him. His xsswholery towards his kid(s) was just ugh! Too stubborn to help his own daughter when she was in clear pain!!! Ugh!!!!
Do you think he even mourned her when she was presumed dead? Like she was the only real family he had left!
You've got a lot of that right, sadly enough.
i'm actually going to put it under a break b/c this is getting a bit long and i've started adding screenshots for evidence lol
B/c the Director really does not acknowledge Simmons as his child anymore (i don't think he had for quite some time, maybe even before Freelancer.) not to mention, i'm pretty sure he played favorites, favoring Carolina even before loosing Alison.
i have some animatic screenshots that illustrate this. hold on while i fetch them lol.
Tumblr media
ok, like in this family photo (taken right before Alison left on that last mission) the Director's focus is on Carolina while Alison's is mostly on Simon.
and here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
when the house was burning down? he made sure Carolina got out but left Simon in the burning room to find his own way out. (i actually had another few panels i cut from this that showed him walking out but i didn't like the vibes they had) The dude played favorites pretty much from the moment they were born, and it was very clear who was his favorite.
Simon was too much like him for the Director to ever care for him. He was always the child that wasn't good enough. so when he disappeared from the MOI, the Director cared more about the fact he did so in the flashiest of explosions, than the fact he was actually gone.
Also, he does know that Simon is alive, and knows exactly where he is. (I don't think he realizes he stole Eta, but then again, he might not know of Eta's existence regardless.) I mean, the dude's the worst at making a disguise lol. no joke, his 'i'm not a freelancer' disguise was cutting off his ponytail and ditching his glasses and labcoat. That's it! And his name change? Dude when from "Simon Church" to "Richard Simmons". He all but kept hsi first name and tacked it on as his last! (the reason he chose Richard as his name is funny tho. I thought i wrote him talking to Grif about it at some point but i can't find it. It basically went like this "My dad always said he had wanted me to be named after him." "His name was Richard?" "No, but he was a Dick." lol)
But yeah, I actually think The Director rigged it so Simmons ended up in the simulation base, that way he knew where he was if needed but Simmons would still think he had gotten away from Freelancer. (I imagine the "this was a simulation base for Freelancer all along" revelation hits him a LOT harder for this au. dude would not handle that well at all.)
As for the Tex vs the Reds + tucker, yeah she doesn't hit Simmons quite as much as the rest of them. (which i didn't notice until i just rewatched that fight scene. Thanks for the excuse btw : ) ) Like, he does get hit with a couple shipping containers and a few mild explosions (and yeeted a few times) but she doesn't down right pumble him like the other three. Sure, there's several inseries reasons for this (he was keepign his distance for rocket launcher reasons being one) but for this? Tex would rather have him out of the picture than have to fight him. even if he wasn't the grownup kid of the woman she was based off of (complicated much?) he's still an ex-freelancer. He poses more of a threat than the other three combined, if he had wanted to. (PLUS! he has Eta in his implant by then, so he could, very well, run equipment if he wanted to. He doesn't b/c he doesn't want anyone to know about Eta, but it's still an option. Eta got woken up/moved to his implant about the end of season 6, i think. It was the only way Simmons could think of to protect them from the emp since simmons's own cybernetics are emp resistant. Eta's been a little voice in his head since then, which does not help the dude's anxiety, let me tell you.)
as for FILSS? i think she does recognize him but that's not why she jumps on the 'lets be mean to grif' train. i think she literally only does that b/c she sees tex doing it and goes, well if tex doesn't like this dude, then i guess i don't either.
and, yeah, there's definitely a reason why the Director is more hated than loved. even canonically, he barely even looked at Carolina, not even calling her by her name when he said goodbye for the last time.
I don't know if he morned her or just kept his focus on trying to get back Alison. He was a broken man pretty much since Alison died.
i have a different fic i wrote, that, at the end of his life, discribed him as this "He looks like a shell of what he used to be. Little more than the biproducts he created in the other room.[refering to the many tex bots]". And that's something i still hold true for that man (and also one of the favorite lines i've written to date lol). The fact that he could never let his wife go, destroyed so much more than just his own life. and it wasn't right.
ANYWAYS! that's it for my ranting lol.
Thank you!!

Sorry if this is a bother but I’m getting back into RVB and I had this on my mind.
Simmons was the only one that was the most in character, especially the whole thing with Lopez, inside Epselon (however that’s spelled) like Church was spot on.
How would that factor in, in Runaway Freelancer Simmons AU? If it means anything at all when it comes to that.
(Talking about inside the Epselon Unit/ that arc Church was having)
It's no bother at all! i love answering questions about my aus, even if it's ones i haven't really touched in a while lol.
I'd say maybe the reasoning for the consistency would change? Like if Simmons was the only one accurate from the start of season 9's Epsilon arc, than that might be because Alpha had known Simmons from before he was fully fragmented while everyone else he had met after. Like Simmons tried to steal Alpha/successfully stole Eta before Epsilon was created. So the memory of him would have went to Epsilon when he was created.
Basically Epsilon would be pulling that characterization from the memories he actively gained from Alpha upon creation, rather than the memories he tried to find/was told about by Caboose later. So that's probably why Simmons is more accurate, at least in terms of this au.
(which also might mean that Epsilon might actually recognize him as an ex-freelancer once he actually thinks about it, but that's a whole different thing.)
Thank you!

One more realization at night (nights the only time I get home so always night time realization):
Maine.
Maine has met him.
Did Simmons get any type of acknowledgment at the Director’s last moments, or did he stop behind the open door way watching and hearing “You were my greatest creation” to only Carolina? Or did he not want to follow her to the end and stayed with the guys.
Oh god, when Grif got jumped by all of those Texbots.
“No don’t! I need him intact! Mom, please don’t kill my husband!”
“…that just gives me every reason to kill him more.”
He was her favorite after all :3
Impossible scenario I know, Tex wouldn’t kill Grif just make him very useless in places he definitely doesn’t need and will never be using.
Physical pain was her way of shovel talk :3
No worries : ) Night's the only time i ever get to myself anymore so yeah, i get that lol.
Yeah, Maine met him in freelancer but i don't think he knew him much past 'that tech that sometimes blows stuff up.' Then, by the time the whole 'holding him captive' thing happened, Maine wasn't exactly in his right mind enough to recognize him.
As for the last moment with the Director, i think he tries to go with Carolina but just can't bring himself to go in the room. So he ends up sitting in the hallway trying to keep an impending anxiety attack at bay as Carolina has that last conversation with their father. B/c both he and Eta are afraid of this man, even in the hollow state he's in. And, unfortunately, this would be one of the times where Eta's presence is not entirely helpful b/c of that shared fear. They end up in a bit of a feedback loop where Simmons's fear makes Eta's worse, which makes Simmons's worse, etc. So by the time they get back to the guys (and thus out of the building), they basically have to have someone take Eta for a while so they can both calm down (probably Caboose b/c who better to calm a panicking AI than a dude that doesn't quite understand what fear is.)
But yeah, he wasn't acknowledged b/c he couldn't go in the room, though Carolina probably mentioned him without getting a response/reaction over it.
On a sillier note! lol yes! it's just like
Simmons: No! Really! Don't kill him! I need him for tax benefits!
Tex: Fine. I'll only neuter him.
Simmons: But that's unnecessary! we're not even like that! At all! Neither of us have any interest in...that!
Tex: I'm making sure.
but yeah, beating Grif was definitely her version of a shovel talk. And Grif certainly got that message lol.
Thank yoU!

Hey, people were talking about the runaway freelancer au! It made me curious though, what characters knew Simmons was a freelancer? Besides tex and Carolina oc.
Depends on when in the series, tbh. Like Blood Gulch, only Tex and Simmons knew b/c Carolina wasn't around, Alpha had memory loss, and Simmons was too scared to talk about it with anyone (even Grif.)
Wash and Maine don't recognize him b/c neither really interacted with him on the MOI (no one really did. he didn't socialize much).
But Carolina comes to Valhalla specifically looking for him and Wash, and is not exactly subtle. So yeah, when Carolina shows up to drag them on the 'lets kill the Director' mission, everyone finds out. (the exception being Epsilon who wasn't present, but will find out upon getting picked up.)
But yeah, by the time season 10 is happening, everyone knows and are in various states of denial about it.
Thank you!

Now that I’m thinking about it; would Carolina have problems calling Simmons, well, Simmons as first or was it easy for her to call him by his new name?
Ref: Runway freelancer Simmons AU
What does Kai think about all of this mess? Like at what point does she find out she has a brother in law? Did Grif remember to at least write her a letter about it? Or did she not know until she gets there?
Kai interacting with Tex. Is it a little different from canon or the same since at that point no one knew?
Since I would not be able to keep it the same with the context in mind myself. I’d tweak it a tiny bit, but I know she’s playful and flirty sooo a few compliments still.
She’d still flirt with Simmons whether she knew he was her brother in law or not. (For me anyways)
1) She was not invited to the wedding so she’d be mad about that. (Getting married without her? The nerve!)
2) If she didn’t know until she came to blood Gultch, she’d get pxssed he didn’t tell her and would want a bit of revenge and also try to get to know Simmons a bit.
3) A shovel talk however late, must still be dealt regardless.
I just want more Kai is all :3 happy pride :3
Honestly, i think she would have some issues shifting names. Like, for one it's very close to start with (Simon vs Simmons). And 2, i'm not sure she really bothered throughout season 10. It's probably not until Chorus that she even accepts that he's not the same guy that blew up his armor as a 'letter of resignation.' It's probably mid-late chorus that they finally have a good talk over everything and she finally starts putting effort into calling him Simmons. (She refuses to call him Dick. No matter how amused she is by his reasoning for choosing that name lol) (also he's not particularly upset if she calls him Simon. He chose Simmons as a way of keeping that name anyways since it was his mother that named him. And he only changed his name so the Director couldn't' find him. Which...didn't work anyways but still.)
Oh and Kai! yes!
I think Grif would have told her via email or whatever, since part of the reasoning for getting married was to get Kai to stop trying to hook him up with people. So part of Kai's reasoning for going to Blood Gulch in the first place would be to chew Grif out for getting married without her present, and to meet her new brother-in-law.
Also, i think it would be absolutely hilarious if she decides that if they had the audacity to get married without her being there, then she was going to throw them a second, even bigger wedding that they'd be forced to attend.
and i think she would still flirt with Simmons a bit, b/c that's just kinda how she talks with people. Simmons would be very flustered at first, (b/c women are scary and he's not interested) but once he realizes she's not serious about it at all, he's a little chiller about it. (not super chill b/c women are still scary lol.)
Anyways, i think she does end up getting to throw them a second wedding, but it's not until like post Chorus and it's a surprise wedding (ie. everyone knew except the grooms b/c she wouldn't have gotten to do it otherwise.)
Thank you! And happy pride right back! : )

Freelancer Simmons anyone (with a ponytail by demand)
Ok, i promised more info in this post so here we goooooo
Basically this for my “Tax benefit” fic world (which i’m tagging as “Simmons’s runaway freelancer au”. rn it includes the fic and the west coast animatic). the main points of that (That’s relevant for this) is that he’s Carolina’s brother and is terrified his father will find him again after he ran away.
anyways, this is from before he runs from Freelancer (obviously.) He’s given the name “North Carolina” but just goes by NC. He’s on missions so infrequently that no one really knows there’s another with the designation Carolina so they don’t ever specify that Carolina as ‘South Carolina.’ She’s still just Carolina. And he’s just the weird tech that’s sometimes given some armor to go blow shit up.
He doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the agents or the tech staff. He tries but no one really listens to him so he just stops talking all that much. He hates going on missions b/c it’s stressful (and he doesn’t like fighting) but if something needs to be blown up, they send him. (yes, that means he would have helped Tex blow up the oil rig. and possibly the tower too.) That’s the one thing he likes during missions, is the explosions. He’s a pyro.
Alright! To the actual running away bit
Basically he finds out what his father’s doing with Alpha (And possibly his other experiments too) via some far too curious hacking. It terrifies him. If his father was capable of torturing his own brain clone till it broke, running social experiments on the staff until they fell apart, and manipulating his own daughter into getting not one but 2 AI fragments, what was he planning to do to him?
So he leaves, taking one of the fragments destined to be Carolina’s (b/c as rocky as their relationship is, he doesn’t want her to end up hurt from having 2 AIs) and jumps ship. He hides among the military (figuring that would be the last place the Director looks) with Eta asleep in a flashdrive around his neck.
(he also ‘disguises’ himself. I use that term loosely since his disguise is just cutting two inches off his hair and removing his glasses.)

I would love to say I won’t explaining, but i am.
Basically no one recognizes him out of armor (because he’s a tech that doesn’t talk to anyone) but EVERYONE recognizes the maroon recon armor set b/c they only see it when something is going to explode (usually whatever they’re standing in/on.)
