Man in a Suitcase: Variation on a Million Bucks - Part Two (1.5, ITC, 1967)
"So, money and women make fools of us all. Which is making an idiot of you, Mr. McGill?"
"Both."
"Then you are twice damned."
#man in a suitcase#blood tw#variation on a million bucks#itc#classic tv#1967#stanley r. greenberg#robert tronson#richard bradford#ron randell#yôko tani#anton rodgers#norman rossington#gay hamilton#harry landis#warren stanhope#jeremy wilkin#simon brent#harry tardios#ricardo montez#a neat wrap up to probably McGill's biggest adventure. of all the two parters ITC tried out in the late 60s with an eye to editing for#cinema release‚ i think this is perhaps the most successful. it does suffer bc of the revised transmission order‚ like part 1: US#intelligence explicitly know that McGill is innocent of the treachery he was accused of 6 years previously‚ something which will only be#revealed as a twist at the end of the next episode (in fact the pilot). I'd forgotten how downbeat the series could be‚ marking it out as a#real change in style and tone from ITC's previous fare; McGill rarely wins‚ and isn't always the most likeable lead. notably this ep#touches briefly on bigger themes about greed and the value of money‚ as well as obsession and mortality. it's also another fairly bloody ep#with McGill getting stabbed before act 1 is even over. also of note is McGill's killing of a man in the ep's conclusion; where The Saint#and others brush over this kind of standard violence for adventure tv‚ it's treated here as a serious issue with potential fallout that's#only avoided bc of the interference of the US government (likewise McGill seems to treat it more somberly than Simon Templar or such would)#a rare straight role for sitcom stalwart Norman Rossington as the corrupt ship's captain who smuggles McG into Lisbon

Things I liked:
-      Im obsessed with multiple POV books, and the fact that the POVs in this book happen in different times was so good.  It really keeps the story going in a way that some books don't really utilize in this setup.  And keeping the POV’s to two people makes it very easy to follow.
-      Eliana is my favorite out of the the two main characters.  She is very different form Rielle, and much more interesting to read about.  She loves her family and will do anything to save them, which I can appreciate.
Things I didn't like:
-     Rielle is kind of really annoying for most of the book.  I don't know if its Corien’s influence that makes her annoying or just the fact that she's whiny.  She doesn't seem to know what she wants to do at any given point and it was annoying.
-     Both relationships between Simon and Eliana and then Harkan and Eliana feel out of place.  Neither of them really seem like a relationship that makes sense.  Its not like the classic Good Boy vs. Bad Boy setup, both seem to be pretty middle of the road in the morals department.  Simon may be slightly more “bad” but I don't see the point in either relationship at this moment in time.
Overall:
-       This was a really good book!  It took me a minute to get used to the different time periods set up, but once I got past it I was in love!  The whole magic system was really complex but also easy to understand.  Eliana and Remy are my favorite characters so far.  My least favorites have to be Rielle and Audric.  They are just really boring and whiny for some reason.  And I can't stand characters that just seem to whine on and on about how terrible their lives are.  Im very excited for the rest of the series, and to see if they throw and fun twits in!
- Rating: 4.5/5

Man in a Suitcase: Variation on a Million Bucks - Part One (1.4, ITC, 1967)
"Don't go, McGill. I'd hate to see you killed before you paid me."
#man in a suitcase#variation on a million bucks#itc#classic tv#pat jackson#stanley r. greenberg#richard bradford#yôko tani#anton rodgers#ron randell#aubrey morris#simon brent#warren stanhope#mike pratt#john lee#alan white#david baxter#david scheuer#ricardo montez#ever the crafty mogul‚ by 67 Lew Grade had hit on the idea of featuring two part episodes in his big shows‚ ready made to be edited into#feature length films for cinema release or for use as tv movies in overseas territories: the last two colour episodes of Danger Man's#abortive final run (abandoned in favour of The Prisoner) had been intended for packaging together and The Baron and The Saint had recently#done something similar. VoaMB stands out from those examples tho bc the production team still approached the episodes as very individual#entities (with different writers and directors‚ separate locations and guests). this first part is one of the strongest depictions of#McGill's private life; for much of the episode there's no case to speak of‚ so we get to see him chumming around with Anton Rodgers (a#wonderful character‚ a Russian in exile and the mirror image of McGill's fake traitor)‚ going to the theatre‚ hosting parties. however the#shuffled transmission order finally causes some real problems: with the pilot pushed back to episode 6‚ we're explicitly told here that US#Intelligence knows McGill is innocent (a major twist of that now later episode)‚ and references are made to characters and events we havent#yet seen. it's a distracting bit of confusion in what is otherwise a very strong (and personal for McGill) episode. Rodgers steals every#scene as the sad but prosaic Russian accused of treachery he never committed (and I'm pleased to say he and Bradford got on very well)
