I just read Charade ..amidst all the dabfics I have been reading lately..I didn't realise that I hadn't read it earlier..and wow..was I gobsmacked...it hit me and touched me in beautiful places..it was beautifully written and while I love all your work this was really something else..it was simple but very layered...had all the makings of a great story..angst..drama..comedy..romance.. suspense and the fireworks..i loved it..it was epic and transcendent..

This was my favorite canon Arnav ..he retains all the angry man feels which make usbdrool but he is also sensitive in way the show Arnav wasn't..he is more evolved ...

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful version with us...

Thank you so much for reading it! I’m super sorry it remains unfinished. I was excited about the way I’d planned the Shyam reveal. I don’t know what happened in the last year, it’s like all my confidence around it has disappeared. But I want to write it -- even if it’s not good -- because at least I’ll have learned something.

How are you doing? I haven't been around much lately but everytime I catch up on stugf on Tumblr you are having some amazing discussions. You are simply awesome 🤩🤩👌👌♥️

Hope you are having a great and healthy year and wishing you a Happy Valentine's a day in advance because you bring so much love, light and happiness to my life.

I have been meaning to ask this for a long time. Have you seen "Asshiqana" its a series by Gul Khan on Hotstar. Its very soap operatic and is a love story set in backdrop of crime and conspiracy. Though it has many problematic tropes and sometimes too many twists and turns which require healthy suspension of disbelief the treatment of certain sequences is beautiful. The lead pair are beautiful and have great chemistry which makes it good to watch but the way the FL breaks stereotypes and calls out patriarchy is something I haven't seen in a long time. It does get preachy at times but overall its something that was needed. Could have been handled better but its start and I love it. The FL and the brother of the ML are two awesome characters. He worships his elder brother but what is beautiful is that he shows him the mirror each time and higliights his 1940 ki thinking brilliantly. Also while the ML is chauvinistic he knows it and slowly is coming to terms with falling for a girl who is against everything he believes in. So thats refreshing.

Anyhow, I just wanted to know what you think about it.

I'm aware of Aashiquana. I am glad you are enjoying the show. One thing that I often dislike about 4Lions shows nowadays is that they talk about feminism while showing patriarchy. The female leads will have big "dialogues" but I determine liberalism by seeing what happens with the female lead herself. Is she subjected to sexism and patriarchy by the elders? Misogyny and misguided rage by the hero? Is her character always assassinated, do her career dreams ever come true?

Thus her shows end up being preachy and cringey instead of revolutionary.

I've captured little bits of it and it seems interesting. As you've mentioned above the heroine and the hero's brother look delightful. But the whole concept of a chauvinistic man becoming better because of the woman he loves is dated and far from reality.

If a chauvinistic man is 'better' to the woman he loves or that he needs a woman in his concern to be affected by patriarchy to understand how terrible chauvinism is, then that is not changing. And that is not improvement.

So I'm turned off Aashiquana for the male lead and his terrible Amma/grandmaa/bua (I have no idea who that woman is but she lives in 1930s).

Like I don't think I could've liked IPK if Dadi (Subhadra) was a character from the beginning. And Arnav wasn't ever a "women shouldn't do this". His issues with Khushi wasn't ever gender based. He was more like "let me live, let everyone live, and for fuck's sake stop obsessing with marriage cause it's no use ruining two lives"

Which he was right about...

And honestly I am tired of women playing roles where they've to 'correct' the men. It exhausted me in Shaurya Aur Anokhi Ki Kahaani (non 4 Lions show) and every other telly show.

Also wtf is the female leads names? What happened to Zoya, Anika, Gauri, Meera and all?

But I do like Aashiqana's heroines dialogues. Probably that's it. However, don't let my rant ruin your viewing experience - if you're enjoying it, please keep enjoying it!

I have always loved the way raw sensuality and the pull between the lead characters was potrayed in the show....though to be honest I hated the hut scene and the "tumhi dekho na" cringefest...Im a fan of subtle moments and hence find the faiey light scne before Diwali to be one the most beautiful and sensual moments of the show...

P.S: To be honest what truly bothered me about the hut scene was bad timing, visible body doubles and general discomfort - especially on San's face. And the 'tum hi dekho na' only bothered me because NO CONSENT. If Khushi consented - I would've loved it.

I am visiting your blog after a long break and I must tell you I loved everything that's happened since my last visit..the 11 years celebration posts were amazing...the OS was also very beautiful..

I loved all the answers you have been giving..Ur a just amazing. Your beliefs and sense of humor really come across and I am soooo impressed with how you articulate your thoughts... you're too good..

The year's more than half over and it seems life's been trying for you and me and soo many people ..i just hope you are well ...

For the ask...I started rewatching again and have a question around the arc where Arnav comes to know about Kushi's engagement. Khushi was still hurting and so confused becoz of the Diwali fiasco, her father's health, buaji's manipulation and the ensuing engagement. We have seen that there have been many instances when she has given a very befitting rebuttal to Arnav's insensitive and non sensical line of questioning.

So why do you think she never throws his words back at him when she asks him " apko kya farak padta hai?" As in why doesn't she call out his cruelty by saying something along the lines of " you have clearly stated that I don't mean anything to you Mr. Raizada so why are you all bothered with what happens in my life?"

I know she does call him out my question is regarding throwing his words back at him. We don't usually see her do this..is it because she is too hurt or she gets it that he didnt really mean them or she is knows quoting them will hurt him when he realizes he did not mean or something else entirely?

Because very few people have perfect memory. The pain, heartbreak and hours of tension has left the wounds raw in Khushi's mind - also that her aunt forced her to get engaged - clearly she doesn't remember the exact words Arnav threw at her.

But she remembered that he said that nothing matters to him. She means nothing to him. "Tumse, na uss baat se, koi farak nahi padta" Even now I'm paraphrasing Arnav from my memory.

So when Arnav is hurt and shocked by her engagement, she inflicts the farak on him like a slap. Because that broke Khushi. While he was being the center of her universe, he insisted that she didn't even matter.

Ok this is one thing I want to address about Arnav to the whole fandom. Him not meaning what he said MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. If you accidentally cut a finger, or cut intentionally, you'll still bleed. She doesn't need to quote Arnav to get back to him.

And she quotes him on certain occasion. Such as when she says "you're right, if I didn't enter your life then you would've been happy and so would your sister." It made no difference that Arnav didn't mean it. If he didn't mean it, the thought wouldn't have existed. But he said it.

Arnav's "didn't mean it" does not mean he truly doesn't mean the words or that the thoughts didn't exist in his head. His "didn't mean it" often stems from him regretting the fact the he said the things at the worst time. I'm sure a part of Arnav believed that hypothetically if Khushi didn't exist, then Anjali would've been happier - but that makes no sense considering Shyam's duplicity is beyond Khushi. But he just saw that because Khushi met Anjali, Anjali was triggered to self harm. So, in anger, he wanted to express all his anger at Khushi. And of course later he realises he misspoke and he didn't "mean it" because what he said logically doesn't make sense and Khushi has shown it countless times that she loves his sister as much as he does.

And when it comes to these Diwali angsty moments, Khushi doesn't know Arnav doesn't "mean" it. That idiot means everything he said back then because that was a defense mechanism and he was saying out loud that she doesn't mean anything because she should not. He's emotionally cheating on La, he's a mess basically... no woman, Khushi included, should try to soften their blow assuming the other person didn't mean it.

Khushi just told him what he needed to hear. He has no right nor reason to inquire about her life when he clearly stated she's invisible in his life.

And in reality, people can RARELY make the right argument during fights *cries in memory*

Your obituary touched many cords of my heart having face something similar recently and the one thing that helped me was to talk about their beautiful moments with people who knew them like me and to not regret their passing but celebrate their life.

#2 The Reveal

Original

Khushi, after watching Arnav suddenly be kind to her and watching a news bulletin that talks about a man marrying another so as to his astrological ill fate falls on the new wife instead of the one he intends to love and marry, assumes an atheist Arnav would precisely do the same - hence why he married her.

To marry his true love Lavanya and have his birth chart misfortune befall Khushi instead. Thus Arnav is planning to kill her and Khushi decides to kill herself before he does it first. And this is all played for “silly” comedy.

Arnav saves her from killing herself and tells her the truth. Khushi later pretends nothing happened and chirps around until Arnav confronts her again and she gets angry on him and he disbelieves her story.

Jalebi edition:

Post Holi Arnav and Khushi are very raw and vulnerable. Khushi understands the tension between Shyam and Arnav and is very restless about it. Why would Arnav keep glaring at his beloved jijaji? What wrong could have happened? Oh no, did he know the truth? How could he have known?

Shyam gets further desperate in getting his hands on the papers, and Khushi notices further the tension between the men. She decides to ask Arnav about it but is interrupted with Arnav fake romancing her as they had Anjali witnessing them. Khushi feels all their intimate moments were a play!

Angry, Khushi demands why much she pretend to be a happy wife? She accuses him of hurting her but he accuses her of hurting him more.

Shocked at that, Khushi fears the worst. One, he must’ve known about Shyam. Two, during Holi she must’ve blurted the truth to Shyam.

With Shyam getting more insulting, Khushi straight up heads to Shyam and demands he tells the truths to Arnav. Shyam tries to use to opportunity to get her to sign some papers by Arnav, but Khushi refuses. Angry, Shyam decides to play dirty.

He mocks Khushi that she must be knowing why Arnav married her. Khushi is stunned and Shyam, honestly, tells everything. That Arnav saw what happened on the terrace, misunderstood it, threatened and blackmailed Shyam, and the point of marriage was to use Khushi against Shyam.

Shyam is happy seeing confusion in Khushi’s face but Khushi calls him a liar and storms off, not believing a single word she said. She wonders if he indeed marry her for this and that she could take him to visit her family but in anger if he reveals the contract marriage they’d be hurt further.

Exhausted, she asks Arnav why he married her, Arnav tells her and Khushi can’t believe it. She asks him not to lie but he emphasizes he isn’t!

Khushi is shattered and chooses to kill herself but Arnav saves her, traumatized, and begs Khushi to explain the situation to him instead of…

Khushi yells at him, the sheer audacity to ask for an explanation when he left no room for questions.

Khushi tells the truth and accuses him of coming to the conclusion he perhaps always wanted to reach.

#1 Anjali, Arnav & Sheesh Mahal

Original version:

Anjali shows up to Arnav’s fashion show ramp unannounced and they have a deep discussion which Arnav cuts off and introduces Anjali Jha to the audience. They have the discussion on stage with millions of eyes on them and he hides his mic and eventually removes it to talk to his sister.

Jalebi edition:

I like to imagine Arnav and Anjali having this conversation backstage, away from reporters and prying eyes. it is also more plausible that Anjali got direct access to meet her brother backstage than interrupt a carefully planned fashion show.

And when she tries to dissuade him against sticking to the past, and he says he has moved on (with the background score announcing that ladies and gentlemen, here’s the Arnav Singh Raizada) and he leaves her abruptly to go on stage with his mask of coldness on.

Although he does turn back at one point and see his sister by the aisle of the stage, formally introduces her to everyone, and a tinge of hesitation in his eyes because the past still does haunt him.

However I do miss the introduction of Anjali and her disability here, but there’s enough reference in the show. And the fact that the very first dialogue we hear then is her questioning his actions, strongly displays Anjali’s character.
