Planning to renovate your Houston Vintage Home? Choose the best Home Renovation Companies
One of the most stunning elements that stand the test of time and still remains ageless is architecture. Houston’s real-estate landscape is diverse, but its homes have a distinct architectural pattern. In fact, the city has 20 historical districts, so this means there are many historical homes that might need renovation every once in a while. Since its inception, the city has encouraged innovation in its infrastructural blueprint, and you can find many Gothic, Queen Anne, Craftsman, Folk Victorian, and Folk National style one- or two-story single-family residences in Houston. Do you live their timeless charm and quintessential beauty? Would you love to renovate your vintage home with Houston home renovation companies?
Well, whether you want to give your contemporary home a traditional touch, or are starting from scratch, here are some tips you can follow!
Tumblr media
#1 Research and Respect the Era
If you want a vintage home that acts as a time capsule and takes you back to old-world charm, it’s crucial to respect the era from which you are borrowing the design blueprint. Houston boasts a variety of architectural styles, and even when you want something more exotic from archaic Greek, French, Colonial, or even Indian architecture, you need to understand the historical context and discuss your options with your contractor before making renovation decisions.
#2 Preserve Architectural Details
For those renovating their old vintage home, preserving the old elements is everything. The hallmark of vintage homes is their intricate architectural details, such as stained glass, crown molding, decorative trims, etc. Try preserving these elements during renovation by identifying and restoring details that represent your home’s original glory and maintain your architectural authenticity. In addition, ensure to invest in a team of skilled contractors who know how to restore old homes and work with elements like wooden floors, replicating period-specific cabinetry, or recreating intricate plasterwork. By doing so, you can ensure that the renovation is of the highest quality and that your vintage home doesn’t fall into shambles sooner or later.
#3 Modern Amenities with a Vintage Touch
According to Statista, the market size of home improvement in the United States by 2025 is expected to reach 620 billion USD and in the year 2021 itself, the figures were around 538 billion USD, which shows how Americans love to jazz up their old space.
There’s no denying that preserving the historical integrity of your home is the key to creating a vintage ambiance, but you can keep the features up-to-date as well. For instance, old homes had no specific provisions for wiring, but you can go for concealed wiring and updated plumbing to enhance the functionality of your home without sacrificing the vintage charisma.
Conclusion
The infrastructure in the landscape evolves more frequently than you can ever imagine. However, when you choose timeless vintage designs, we assure you they will never go out of style. From the insinuated Southern Acadian styles that feature a blend of French-influenced and Colonial styles to farmhouse themes that represent a stunning interpretation of timeless architecture with plenty of character and charm, there is so much you can discover and renovate with the top home renovation companies.
Also, when you are going for a house renovation in Houston, feel free to explore the transitional genre. For Houstonians who love the classic, but also like the idea of mixing modern touches, these design schemes are a win-win. Looking for professionals to help you get started with the renovation? Contact the team of remodeling contractors at Marwood Construction right away!

Exclusive Granite Counter-top
I have been getting more and more questions about our counter-tops in our new kitchen. I am going to be sharing my honest 100% opinion on my Granite Counter-tops and my Granite block counters. Why I have both and how they are doing 7 months into living with them. This of course is my counter-top review and does not mean everyone will be happy with my choices. I do believe they are each timeless classic looks for that French Farmhouse kitchen style that I designed.
I wanted a casual feel to our kitchen but also wanted something that never felt outdated. Considering I change my mind every ten seconds I needed to select a kitchen that I wouldn’t get bored with and since we are tapped out on moolah, I needed to make sure they were finishes that would last too. This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience.
Well, Granite is a scary word to most people! I remember a year ago when we were planning for our kitchen how many people tried talking me out of Granite. I did my own research about it, talked with my kitchen designer about it, and tried finding the best match of quartz (since that was the durable material) or granite (a little more durable than Granite but still natural) that I could. I even considered soapstone since I absolutely love it as well, but ultimately decided I would get less sick of light counters than I would dark counters so I swayed back to the Granite. I also considered Granite which I fell in love with too, but it felt “fancier” to me and Granite just felt more timeless, subtle, and paired well with the Farmhouse vibe of my kitchen.
Pro’s to Granite:
So, let’s talk a little about the pros to Granite that I have personally found with having them in our home. The look! I mean this alone sells me every morning when I wake up. I love the veining, the timelessness, and the pureness of Granite. There is nothing quite like that true deep veining, color, and simplicity. The color is a true white and a true cool Black. I wanted that contrast with my greige color cabinets, that I felt quartz was just not going to provide. The more I looked at quartz the more I kept falling more in love with Granite. Not to mention real stone is trending again!
So, yes the look is what sells me every day! So, what else??? The coolness to touch is also something I appreciate about the Granite. The price was also way better than quartz. Quartz being on high demand is now more expensive that real stone. How can that be? I thought that was nuts when I first heard about it, but it totally makes sense. I’m not quite sure the percentage of kitchen renovations that prefer quartz over real stone or other material, but I am sure it’s quite a bit. So, knowing I was getting a more luxurious product for cheaper was another selling factor for me.
Pro’s to Granite Block
Well, with the Granite being a cool and more luxurious product, I wanted something not only to balance my bank account but also my fancy meets casual kitchen. The room needed something that would warm up the space and having the warm wood Granite block feel would definitely create that balance. Our island is 9′ long so the counter was going to be a big chunk of money too. We looked at a few options but I kept coming back to images of kitchens with Granite block counters. We chose white oak so it has less “yellow or red” in it and would mesh well with our flooring.
One of the questions I get all the time is how durable is my Granite block. Well, we had ours sealed through the counter-top company for long lasting wear and tear. It makes it super durable where I can clean it with just about anything and do just about anything on it. I needed that balance because Granite was not a durable surface so it was important to have a surface space in the kitchen that was. Having an island where the kids eat meals, snacks, and do homework on without flinching was important. I love the look of the wood for that Farmhouse feel and it also acts as a large table for us too.
Cons to Granite:
Well, as you all heard and I’ve been told Granite is not durable. Guess what…it’s not! But there are ways to make it work.
#1. Seal your counter-tops with what your counter supplier suggests (I sealed mine twice already and plan to seal them once more this year- so ex’s a year is good). This is the one I use!
#2 Have a mix of counters so prepping and food items that ruin Granite can be avoided. That means no wine on my Granite and no lemon! The two products I am always most concerned about. We have a few lemon marks already but fortunately as time goes on, they seep into the Granite a bit. The soda my son spilled last month, not much I can do about them cup rings (I lost my mind a bit that night).
#3 Clean with Granite and stone countertop cleaner ONLY! Here’s the one I use!
#4 Make sure never to use the sponge you use to clean dishes on the counters. There could be left over acidic juices and we’ve learned this the hard way too.
#5 Avoid moving items around on counter or placing anything abrasive that can scratch. We have one good scratch also from my son- clearly the rule “stay off the Granite” gets broken here and there.
#6 Be careful with edges of counter. We have had some slight chipping from taking items out of sink and placing into dishwasher.
So, yes this is a lot of upkeep…probably annoying for most people, but if you are a Granite lover like myself having those scratches and marks on your counter still make it worth it. Remember Granite has been around since forever embracing the imperfections is what makes for a timeless look. I do agree though this is not for everyone. You totally have to babysit it, and let go of every ding and stain. I will say I would never have an entire kitchen with Granite.
The Granite works because I have the two materials (Granite and Granite block) to help with less wear and tear on the Granite. I have become that crazy lady to put up signs during a party like no wine or keep off the Granite. Some stains do fade over time and if they aren’t in a ring form you may not ever really notice. I also have the honed Granite which helps best with etching where polished Granite etching is more noticeable. I believe it taking care of the products in your home and this just means you have to take extra care.
Cons with Granite Block:
There really is not that much cons when it comes to the Granite block unless you just don’t love the look of it. We have some splintering and if you choose not to use a cutting board to cut something you can get dents and scratches. Other than that, I have nothing bad to say about it. I love the warmth and the casual feel it brings, but if you do want a fancier or glamorous feel to your kitchen Granite block may not be first choice.
I hope this was very helpful for those of you that are considering one or both of these materials for your kitchen. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Only last bit of helpful tip I would say is if you consider doing a Granite back splash as I’ve done behind our range, keep in mind the color darkens when it’s vertical. That has been one little issue that I’ve had with my Granite because it does look a little bluer gray than I had wanted-so keep that in mind!

Ah, I didn’t know Granite was that fragile. I was thinking about it as we plan to Reno out kitchen in the next two years but my husband loves to cook and he’s like a bull in a china shop so we definitely need something more durable. I swear the guy is like the Swedish Chef when he cooks and whatever is on the stove is all over the stove, back splash, counters, floor. I drove me crazy when we first met but he likes to cook and I’m okay with that!
Answer from us
Nicole I can totally relate! My husband is totally accident prone and he makes me very nervous around the Granite. We have been able to manage but every stain and mark I have to remember it’s part of the process of being a Granite owner.

I believe this is the first really honest review I have seen
about Granite. I am single without any children and really wanted Granite
when I purchased a 50-year-old house with laminate counter tops. I kept reading reviews and, in the end, I decided against it and chose quartz. I have never regretted that decision and if someone is not prepared to do the maintenance there are some excellent quartz counters out there that will give you the Granite looks. I will say cost probably depends on what area of the country you reside as I found quartz definitely cheaper than the Granite in my Place.
Thank you for letting people know how a real family lives with Granite. I do think in time you will not even notice those stains and you will still love your Granite. However, you are correct that it isn’t for everyone.

Love your honesty. Like you I love the life in natural stone. We are building our retirement home and after much studying and research I’m going with granite for our back counter-tops and black honed granite for our island.
Your Granite counter-tops are gorgeous and timeless. This is how I feel about the white ice granite we have choose, it is timeless!

I have a question about the Granite? I had it in the past but found when food was spilled and allowed to dry on it (didn’t wipe the spill immediately), then I couldn’t get it up without using the scratchy side of the sponge and then that left scratch marks in the wood. Have you experienced this or does your sealing of the Granite take care of that?

Hi Carol, I have not experienced this, but ours was sealed by the manufacturer so I do think there is a difference in the finish. I love an unfinished Granite counter, but I wanted a surface that would be durable for every day.

I renovated my kitchen eight years ago. Like you, I wanted a timeless look. Kitchens are a huge expense, so you don’t want to be doing it often unless your bank account allows. Mine does not! 😢 I did think about Granite (love it in other’s kitchens) but being a perfectionist, I knew the inevitable staining, scoring and chipping would bother me, so I went with a light granite. I love it! My hubby topcoats it once a year. I can sit anything on it including hot pots. I don’t have to worry about guests setting down wet glasses or dropping salsa on it. Anything precious is not safe around my husband, no coasters for him. Lol Plus, cupboards are a soft white and I thought the stark white of Granite would not compliment the warm white of the wood. It was just the right choice for me.
I’m thinking of Granite for my bathrooms but will toothpaste, shampoos or hot curling irons mar it?

Love your kitchen! I am a Granite lover myself and redid our bathroom so it looks like a bathroom in a hotel we stayed at in London. The maintenance is definitely worth it. I never thought of adding the Granite to the kitchen but will do so now.

I also went round & round on my counter tops when I built my home & now when I’m building again. I opted for quartz last time (& this time too) even the it costs more. I have found it to be SOOO durable & maintenance free (meaning no sealing several times a year). I was after as maintenance free of a home as I could get! However, in my new home I’m going for cultured Granite (more cost effective) in the bathrooms & my maintenance free quartz in the kitchen. Not everyone would put two different kinds of counter tops in their house, but I am & I’m OK with it & that’s all that matters!! Thanks for this article, it gave me some things to think about before I’m to the point of no return in my new house.
Hi! I’m Deb.
Welcome!
I love a well-designed home and I believe you can create this on every type of budget.

Antique Dining Table and Chairs are Increasingly in Demand-know why
Antique dining table and chairs are classics that never to go outdated. In the first half of the 19th-century families gathered in the dining room for family meals. Having no other distractions such as television or internet, every member of the family joined in and this was the time to be social, display good table manners, iron out any problems or worrying family members, making and sharing family plans, etc.
Tumblr media
With the advent of TV and the internet, family time while dining gradually started getting eaten away. However, increasing knowledge of aesthetics splurged the demand for French antiques over the years. Though formal dining habits went out of fashion and the quicker eating experience was called for, a change in home designing fashion was also witnessed. A wide variety of shapes and designs of antique dining tables offers to fit into most situations.
The refractory table in a beautiful farmhouse style is meant to suit kitchens and dining rooms of almost all styles, creating a lovely, country, homely, rustic, farmhouse style. Drop leaf tables, on the other hand, are very well suited to smaller rooms that can be pushed against the wall and then pulled out to feed the whole family. Consumers often prefer antique oak farmhouse round tables as they create a social atmosphere.
Businesses involved in the field possess large stocks of antique farmhouse tables in all different styles and shapes. Consumers often prefer the old table which hosts loads of character and presume it is always the thick top rustic refectory style but the traditional French farmhouse table is the beautiful tapered leg with simple lines.
Extending single and double drawer leaf tables are very versatile and fabulous. Extending dining tables can be used every day and then when needed for that special occasion, like Easter, Christmas and that large dinner party, extended to seat all. Extending farmhouse tables are highly preferred as they fit well and are easy to use. Cherry antique double and single drawer leaf tables are high in demand owing to their uniqueness.

Exclusive: Carole Middleton's first interview: 'Life is really normal - most of the time'
‘Two things you need to know. Carole’s very, very nervous, and she doesn’t do sofas,’ the Telegraph’s team on the shoot warned me the night before I went down to Bucklebury in west Berkshire to interview her. ‘When we asked her to perch on one,’ they continued, ‘Carole’s response was, “Who sits around on a sofa?”’
Sure enough, a couple of days after the shoot, when Carole, clutching a soya latte (she’s recently gone vegan/flexitarian) and slightly late, sweeps into the boardroom at the HQ of Party Pieces, the business she set up in 1988, she doesn’t sit down but immediately takes me on a tour of her empire. Just like that. I don’t quite know what I expected – not trumpets, but perhaps some sense of ceremony – but then I don’t think she knew what to expect either. She’s never done an interview before.
The tour goes on so long that at one stage I wonder whether she’s planning to do the entire interview on the hoof as part of a cunning ruse to get it all over and done with before I’ve had time to press record. It does, however, give me time to adjust my retinas to the life-size Carole, inevitably smaller, but also more youthful, than the version the world has become accustomed to. This, lest we forget, is the future British king’s grandmother – arguably the second most famous granny on the globe.
In one sense, empire, as Carole Middleton would be the first to point out, is far too pompous a word for the collection of brick sheds and barns that Party Pieces has, over the years, colonised on a country estate in Berkshire, a 15-minute drive from the Middleton family home. There are a couple of large warehouses with radios blaring pop music and shelves of pre-filled party bags, fancy-dress costumes, table runners, Let’s Be Mermaids garlands, rose-gold team bride plates and much, much more. ‘And this is just a small part of it,’ says Carole.
There are around 7,000 products in total on the Party Pieces website. She’s seen the cactus, llama and fern trends come and, in some cases, go. But there will always be dinosaurs and princesses. The largest part of the business – at least half – remains children’s party accoutrements, but now there are also accessories for baby showers, 30th and 50th birthdays.
The subtext of all this is that Party Pieces is a serious business that was successfully operating a long time before what Carole later refers to as Catherine’s ‘impact’. It’s a private company and they won’t release figures, but during their busiest periods, they dispatch around 4,000 orders a week.
The beamed open-plan office is where most of her 30-strong admin team (none of whom seems given to hat-doffing in her presence) sit. As does Carole. ‘It’s better to be with everyone so you can see what’s going on,’ she notes. ‘They say it’s a bit like a hurricane arriving when I come in.’
The many Americans who order from Party Pieces would be charmed to know that chickens ran through central HQ until the Middletons moved in. But the décor is more Ryman than Soho Farmhouse. The beige carpets are worn, with several threadbare patches, and there are MDF desks and swivel chairs. The walls in the small boardroom are banana yellow.
Carole herself, however, is a vision in a khaki Ralph Lauren blazer and black T-shirt, black skinny M&S trousers (her legs are phenomenal) tucked into Russell & Bromley riding boots, and minimal jewellery – small drop earrings, a couple of gold rings and a thin gold chain with which she constantly toys. It is classic Middleton style, although Carole tells me she far prefers dresses (‘not ones that are tight round the middle though, my shape’s changing’). Maybe it’s the hair. She gets it done locally and it’s shorter and glossier than in recent pictures. The fact that it seems slightly darker emphasises how alike she and her daughter Catherine, the future Queen of England, look. Perhaps it’s the golden tan or the light-touch make-up – the kind where you can’t see the edges. But whereas Catherine and her sister Pippa look much the same on camera as off, Carole, all flashing, watchful hazel eyes and fluttery, girlish nerves is, at 63, far more striking, delicately boned and simultaneously softer-looking in real life than in pictures.
But the voice is what everyone wants to know about. Is it stewardessy (in her early 20s she worked for British Airways)? Elocutioned? Lynda Snell? None of the above. The best description is probably modern posh – not affected, not mockney. If we’re on a scale of BBC presenters, I’d say Mishal Husain. In terms of warmth… maybe Martha Kearney.
Although she hardly ever looks me in the eye, she is very cosy once she gets going: smart and interested. On the shoot, she asked everyone about themselves and dispensed breastfeeding tips to the make-up artist. I don’t think the solicitude towards others is forced, though it does take her a while to warm up (not in terms of temperature, she’s obviously got terrific circulation as there’s a bracing chill in that boardroom). But she does seem like a lot of fun.
You can see why the Middletons remain such a close family (Catherine texted her on the shoot to wish her luck) and why they all, spouses in tow, gravitate towards Granny Middleton. ‘I do love a good party,’ she says later. ‘I’m definitely a night owl and a real chatterbox. My children look at me sometimes…’
Obviously we’re not here to discuss the children, and certainly not their spouses (Pippa is married to James Matthews, a former racing-car driver, hedge-fund manager and heir to the Scottish feudal title Laird of Glen Affric; James, after an on-off relationship with TV presenter Donna Air, is currently single; their oldest daughter, we know about). Carole and her husband Michael have been commendably discreet during the 13 or so years since Catherine began dating the Duke of Cambridge. As Carole says, ‘Over the years, it’s proved wise not to say anything.’
But Party Pieces, her one-stop-solves-all business, has been going for more than 30 years, ‘and I just thought I should celebrate a little’. And it is a good story, part Catherine Cookson, part careers manual for would-be entrepreneurs, as well as being a business that, says Carole, has been flagrantly copied. Her own role model she says, was Laura Tenison, founder of kidswear brand JoJo Maman Bébé, whom she went to watch at a few conferences in the early days of her own company.
Carole Goldsmith, as she was, seems to have had a strong work ethic from the start. Her father Ron was a painter and decorator. Her mother Dorothy, aka The Duchess (because she always looked so impeccable), was a character. ‘Everyone adored my mother,’ she says when I relate how the taxi driver who picked me up from a local train station and drove me to the Party Pieces HQ, told me she’d been a close friend of The Duchess.
Ron and Dorothy moved to Berkshire from west London 10 years after Carole and Michael. Carole’s own closeness to her children and grandchildren is an echo of the relationship she had with her own family, which was ‘small but tight’. Her younger brother, ‘Uncle Gary’ of Maison de Bang Bang fame (at the time of Catherine and William’s wedding, the press had a joyful time detailing Gary Goldsmith’s party reputation), is also an entrepreneur.
Carole spent her first six months in a council flat in Ealing. She initially left school at 16, got a job with the Prudential in Holborn and hated it. ‘It was one of those massive offices with rows and rows of desks.’ So far, so early 1970s. But Carole knew she could achieve more and asked Ron if she could return to school to do her A levels. She got four: art, economics, English literature and geography, which she wanted to teach. ‘But my parents couldn’t afford to put me through college, so I thought I’d see if I could get a bit of money together and fund myself.’
While she’s recounting this, she suddenly remembers she got a job – she can’t remember the year – on the John Lewis A level trainee scheme. This has always been considered the gold standard in retail and was extremely hard to get on to. Carole is bemused by her own memory lapse: ‘Gosh… how did I forget? I can’t even remember when it was. I’ll have to check with Mike.’
This is a woman who clearly spends even less time navel-gazing than she does lounging on sofas. Too busy cooking. She adores cooking. ‘I probably have more cookery books than anything.’ At the moment her favourites are Mary Berry (‘she does use a lot of cream, though’) and Amelia Freer. The combination of the nation’s favourite baker and the fashionable nutritional therapist, who helped singer Sam Smith lose 3½st, seems very Carole.
The John Lewis gig was a dream, particularly her stint in china and glass at Peter Jones, which is where she realised how interested she was in finding out what kind of merchandise sold. But then they told her she had to do a spell on the shop floor as a sales assistant. ‘I thought, blow that. I’m not doing that for six months – it was really boring.’ So she got a secretarial job (she can still do Pitman shorthand) at BEA (before it merged with BOAC to become British Airways in 1974), but didn’t think much of secretarial work, either, so brushed up her French and got a job as ground staff.
‘It’s not like it is now,’ she explains, coming over momentarily a touch Mrs Bennet. ‘You had to be able to speak another language. It was almost like being at university.’ I think from all this we can conclude that Carole Goldsmith was pretty clear she wasn’t going to be fobbed off with also-ran situations.
The newly formed BA had trained too many pilots, so it was redeploying them on the ground and Carole found herself working alongside them as well as other senior staff.
Enter Michael Middleton, six years her senior, ‘rather shy’ but very handsome… A year after they married, she had Catherine; 18 months after that Pippa and then the Middletons moved to Jordan for three years, where Michael worked as a aero manager for an international air station (he was never a pilot). Jordan life sounds comfortable. There was a lot of socialising at the British Embassy, some help at home and the girls were in nursery school. But, says Carole, ‘I wasn’t convinced I wanted to be an expat mum and Mike’s job there was coming to an end.’
By the time they returned to the UK in 1987, Catherine was four and a half, Pippa 18 months younger and Carole, now 32, was pregnant with their third child, James. ‘I thought, “Oooh, bills to pay.” But I also had this strong feeling that I hadn’t achieved anything. I got married at 25, had Catherine at 26…’
Party Pieces launched the same year her son was born, in 1987, with a simple idea about a one-stop place where you could get everything you need for a children’s party. Carole visited the Birmingham Spring Fair, where she sourced some suppliers of paper plates and cups, stuck up a self-designed flyer at Catherine’s local playgroup in Bucklebury, and began stuffing bags from her kitchen table.
Business was steady if unspectacular – this was pre-internet, so responses weren’t always immediate. But then she had the brainwave of advertising with The Red House, a children’s book club she’d subscribed to once her brood began to read: 10,000 flyers to begin with and then 100,000. That’s when Party Pieces really took off.
She moved from her kitchen to a small business unit in nearby Hungerford – Mike built the packing benches. ‘That’s when Michael gave up his job at BA and came in. My mother thought that was big, because at that stage he probably wouldn’t have got employment again, but we could see this was a business that could scale up.’
When I ask about struggles or disasters she more or less shrugs off the notion. ‘We were pretty much the only ones doing this sort of thing when we started. It was really clear almost from the start that this was going to work. I got help from other mums – paperwork and that kind of thing… I think it’s easier to start a business when you’re young. You’re less aware of the pitfalls and maybe you have less of a lifestyle to lose.’
Listening to Carole talk about those early years, what comes across is her resourcefulness and stoicism. She feels they were lucky. ‘Running a business is really very simple: you buy things and sell them for a profit.’ Mike’s decision to quit his job was, she says, their wild card. She is very clear that the business was her idea. ‘And it was a good idea or it wouldn’t have taken off.’ Were there no sleepless nights over the financing? ‘We never took really huge risks. We had to fund our own growth,’ she replies. She doesn’t get stressed, she says, although she was clearly anxious about this interview. Maybe that British Airways training ingrained the necessity of appearing serene while paddling furiously below the surface.
When I ask about juggling a fledgling business with three small children, particularly when working mothers were not as common as they are now, she responds instantly. ‘It was my business, so I could work around the holidays.’ She makes it sound straightforward. She understands the tussle, though, but in the end, she’s a boss. ‘In this office, I see the challenge of working mothers – but if I need them here…’
There was spillage into their home life, ‘Mike and I often talked about work in the evenings or on holiday, but we enjoyed it. I never really felt I was a working mother although I was – and the children didn’t either. They grew up with it.’
The girls were at school till 6pm. That’s a long day: someone who observed them from a distance says Catherine and Pippa were always hard workers at school and encouraged by Carole to hone accomplishments that would serve beyond academia, such as skiing. ‘James would get picked up – very occasionally by someone else – and come back to the office and be here with me,’ continues Carole. ‘I was often finished by 6pm and I didn’t have a long train journey. I think it’s really good to work. It was part of the children’s lives – it still is – and they’d come and help. They did a lot of modelling. Catherine was on the cover of one of the catalogues, blowing out candles. Later on, she did some styling and set up the First Birthday side of the business. Pippa did the blog. I still value their ideas and opinions.’
There was never any doubt in the Middletons’ minds that they would base their family and business in Bucklebury. ‘Do you live in London?’ Carole asks me, looking sympathetic when I nod. Later, when she drives me to the train station, scooping a pile of papers and a plastic cup from the passenger seat of her Range Rover, to save me phoning for possibly non-existent taxis, she shows me the spot she and Michael first fell in love with.
She loves this tiny pocket of remoteness – the fact it’s only an hour from London, that she can take their four spaniels and one golden retriever (James, who lives with them when he’s not in London, shares two of the dogs) for a long walk straight from their house, and the solid, picturesque red-brick architecture. ‘We really fell on our feet moving to this area,’ she says. Their first home was ‘a very sweet semi-detached cottage. We stayed there until Catherine was 13, so the children spent a lot of their youth there.’
There were two more moves – Oak Acre, a detached house where Prince William famously landed his Chinook helicopter in 2008, and the more secluded, seven-bedroomed, Grade II- listed Bucklebury Manor. She’s good at nesting, she says. ‘If you choose your house wisely, you don’t have to do too much. We almost just replicated what we did before. Farrow & Ball Cord and Hay [both shades of beige] – you can’t go wrong.’
In photos, Bucklebury Manor is what estate agents would call impressive, a description that must set Carole all ajangle. She’s on a mission to appear as unaffected and normal as possible. Later, when we’re discussing her love of Christmas trees and how she likes to have as many as possible in the house, including one in the grandchildren’s rooms, ‘so that they can decorate it themselves’, there is one of many long pauses, while she ponders the consequences of a seemingly innocuous exchange. ‘That makes me sound as though I live in a mansion, doesn’t it?’ Erm, you’re the future king’s grandmother, I think. Would a mansion be out of the question?
Maybe she’s right to be cautious. Over the years it has been she, rather than Michael, who has caught the full beam of the Middleton-focused attention, much of which fixes on the idea of her as a pushy arriviste. She stopped reading the stories about herself online over a year ago. I’m surprised it took her so long. ‘Well, I thought it was better to know what people thought. But it doesn’t make any difference. I’m not really sure how I’m perceived now,’ she says. ‘But the thing is… it is really normal – most of the time.’
When I ask her where she most likes to shop, there’s another pained pause. ‘How’s this going to make me sound?’ I half- expect her to confide that her secret vice is Harrods’ personal- shopping department, but only if she can get it closed to the public. But no. Peter Jones is her happy place. ‘The staff are lovely and they all know me.’ She also loves Burford Garden Company in the Cotswolds, where she and Pippa will happily spend the best part of a day.
More Middle England you cannot get. She even loves Michael McIntyre. She could be protesting too far when she later opines that Jigsaw is a bit pricey. She loves Samantha Sung’s shirt dresses and Goat, but likes to shop in the sale. She finds the music in Selfridges a bit overwhelming and she only very occasionally patronises Catherine Walker, but I suspect this is how the Middletons really are.
Carole is known to drive a hard bargain when she negotiates – she’s not a businesswoman for nothing. She seems genuinely concerned that if I take the train back to London from a different station, I’ll have to buy another ticket (all of £22). There are things they spend money on – property, children’s education, holidays – and things they consider to be a waste of money. Fashion is definitely a bit suspect. ‘Do you think it’s important?’ she asks me. When I say it’s a huge UK success story, that first impressions are clearly important and that style, rather than fashion, is worth cultivating, she nods. ‘Now you put it like that, I see what you mean.’
In some ways, there’s a touching naivety about Carole. I don’t think any of the family, with the possible exception of James (and this is based solely on pictures; I’ve never met him) give one iota about being cool. She’d rather be doing other things than clothes shopping. Party Pieces remains a full-time job for her.
‘I don’t see myself stopping [work]. If I did I’d have to have so many projects on. I’d have to redecorate the house. I’d love to travel, but then I’d miss the grandchildren. No,’ she ponders, as if just deciding this, retirement is not on the cards. ‘I’ve got a billion ideas I still want to do.’

5 Different Home Styles: A Kids' School Project
William Collins pointed out that, in the United States, there are several distinct types of housing. Ranch houses and early colonial architecture have many common core forms. However, how can you pick the best kind for your home? Mary O'Neil, a preservation specialist, describes some of the most typical home designs. Learn more by reading on. Five of the most prevalent varieties are listed here. Additionally, their traits as well as pros and downsides are described below.
Identify the type of home you want first. Different architectural plans and designs are used in various styles. These inquiries are made by real estate agents during a home inspection to ascertain the types of houses that are available. By doing so, you may get ready for typical issues that could occur while purchasing a house. To understand about various designs and make an educated choice, it would be beneficial if you also looked around many other homes. There are several alternatives available; pick one that best suits your requirements and financial constraints.
Modern and contemporary homes include angular characteristics and are sleek and simple. Numerous floor-to-ceiling windows, a contemporary aesthetic, and a combination of artificial and natural materials may be seen in many mid-century modern residences. The asymmetrical floor layout, towering leaded windows, and steep gable roofs of Tudor houses, a typical design in the United States, contrast with this. Newer styles are often made of brick or stucco, however these houses are sometimes made of shingle wood.
William Collins's opinion, large windows made of plate glass are a common feature of contemporary homes. They frequently use simple shapes, organic textures, and natural lighting in their design. Modern houses often feature flat or low-pitched roofs and employ minimalist materials. Additionally, they frequently use eco-friendly products. Modern houses also emphasize the outdoors and are minimalistic. Finally, they employ open-plan interiors, crisp lines, and clean textures. Make sure your contemporary house is as useful and appealing as possible if you're thinking about developing one.
A bungalow is another kind of home. This house design is sensible, affordable, and perfect for first-time homebuyers. It may be readily customized to your tastes and is offered in a range of sizes and pricing points. They're also a great option for parents on a tight budget who have small children. A bungalow is also incredibly adaptable and may be built anywhere.
Spanish and Italian villas are the origin of Mediterranean-style architecture. They place a strong emphasis on indoor-outdoor living and have a courtyard for the most airflow possible. They thrive in softer conditions the best. Homes built in the Mediterranean architectural style frequently have tiled roofs, white stucco walls, and accents of wood and stone. These houses frequently have arched windows and doors. To select the ideal property, it would be beneficial to discuss your preferences with a realtor.
In the United States, single-family homes are the most prevalent kind of housing. They are usually the only ones with a private yard and are not attached to any other buildings. Single-family dwellings are less prevalent in high-density regions. They provide more privacy and customization and are typically found in the suburbs. Five of the most popular home designs are listed here. They have benefits and drawbacks. So decide which features of a property would best fit your demands.
French country-style houses are typically modest and draw their inspiration from the French countryside. They share shutters, pointed roofs, and distressed-wood exteriors with farmhouse-style houses. They frequently have a comfortable fireplace, natural wood, and muted color schemes inside. If you want a house that matches the rural setting, this is a great option. They don't work well everywhere, though.
According to William Collins, ranch-style houses have separate entrances from the street but share walls with their neighbors. These houses typically have a single floor and an attached garage. These dwellings are common in big cities because they maximize vertical space while conserving horizontal space by being built close to neighboring houses. Standard amenities are shared by some townhomes. The fact that ranch-style homes frequently have open floor layouts should not be overlooked. This design can easily modified to suit your requirements.
Between 1830 and 1900, Victorian-style houses were constructed. Ornate features, symmetrical floor designs, and asymmetrical plans are all present. Victorian architecture was all about embellishment, and industrialization led to their mass production. Gothic Revival architecture, which drew inspiration from medieval Europe, is another design fad. These houses often have a big porch and elaborate woodwork.

What Style of Kitchen Tap Should You Choose?
The range of kitchen taps on the market means that for many homeowners, choosing the finishing touches to their kitchen is the most exciting part of the decoration process.
While kitchen basics such as cupboards and work surfaces are of course important to the look of a room, the small end touches such as kitchen taps are the choices that really make a difference to the look of a kitchen and can completely transform a room and give it a designer edge. Pull Out Kitchen Taps Australia
So which kind of kitchen tap is the best? This depends on the style of the kitchen being decorated - which could be traditional farmhouse or stainless-steel chic - as well as the available water pressure in an area and the budget requirements of homeowners.
Great options for all styles of kitchen, modern or traditional, are lever kitchen taps. They are an ideal combination of aesthetic appeal and functionality and can be a good fit for all types of kitchen decor.
For less able homeowners or elderly customers, lever taps are also an option worth considering as products with longer length pipes and fixtures measuring as much as six inches ensure there is no need to uncomfortably lean over a sink to reach the water.
Long lever taps are simple to use, ensuring that guests to a home will not be left baffled by how to get the water out of the outlet, and kitchen decorators can choose between single mixer lever tap styles - such as the Paini Creta long lever mixer - or taps in a more traditional mix tap style with two outlets, one for hot and one for cold. Pull Out Kitchen Taps in Perth
Many people like to mix up the look of their home and may choose to redecorate a kitchen fairly frequently, and for these homeowners, a kitchen tap style that is timeless and matches any design is essential.
Monoblock kitchen taps are a great all-round option that fit in a sleek modern stainless-steel kitchen as well as a farmhouse-style room with wooden units and checked patterns.
In a minimalistic and super modern kitchen, the CDA TP3 tap will fit perfectly. This sleek option looks truly high-end, with its sharp right-angled design adding an extra dimension to kitchen decor. The single flow style gives a stylish effect and with the tap's flow adjuster located on the spout, the overall finish is streamlined and seriously stylish.
Farmhouse style kitchens with old-fashioned yet timeless deep porcelain sinks and wooden surfaces could match well with the CDA TT45 traditional French farmhouse mixer tap, which is a single flow design. This tap features mixer outlets for hot and cold in a traditional three-prong design for ease of use. Kitchen Mixer Taps Australia
The main pipe of the French-style tap is intricately designed and is certainly striking, making it a real feature of any family kitchen.
One of the main things to consider when picking new kitchen taps is the water pressure in a region. Many modern stainless-steel options need a higher level of water pressure to work to the best of their ability and homeowners should check the available pressure in their area before buying.
Traditional tap styles can work well in areas of lower water pressure, but those in these regions keen on a designer high-end style could consider installing water pressure boosters to ensure their new kitchen taps work well.

Individualistic Home Designs With A Sassy Sense Of Style
A sassy sense of style runs through the two individualistic home designs that we tour here. Our first intriguing home tour takes place in a meticulous restoration of a large 5-bedroom townhouse, which features beautifully restored woodwork, custom details and around 8,000 square feet of light-filled interiors. Colourful artwork and an eclectic furniture collection shape living spaces that draw the eye and excite the mind. The second home design we visit is a loft, located in the historic Gilsey House building in the NoMad neighbourhood of Manhattan. Industrial features hark to its history, whilst bold art pieces, colourful accents and a bespoke staircase design make the loft into a marvellously modern and uplifting home.
Source: Compass
Led by award-winning architect, Jeffery Povero of Povero&Company, this 20ft wide single-family townhouse renovation includes five bedrooms, six bathrooms and immaculately rejuvenated living spaces. Colourful wall art brings the light-flooded lounge to life. Bright scatter cushions and throws colour the sofas, whilst a large area rug adds texture to the floor.
The glorious wooden staircase has been restored, bringing rich warmth to each floor of the townhouse. In the dining room, a multicoloured rug adds a bright contemporary touch by the classic woodwork. A modern dining room chandelier fills the fresh white ceiling space.
The townhouse boasts an interior of approximately 8,000 square feet. An enormous kitchen is blessed with an impressive central island that doubles as a casual dining/breakfast spot.
Industrial style kitchen bar stools line up beneath the clean white corian countertop. Five elegant pendant lights meander above the length of the island.
Grey and white framed kitchen cabinets build a custom look. Two side-by-side 6-burner Wolf ranges and a farmhouse sink place focal points in the arrangement. One small doorway leads into an oversized pantry, whilst French doors lead onto an intimate balcony with a grill and outdoor dining bar that overlooks 5th Avenue.
The entryway features more exquisite woodworking and original dark-wood wainscoting, beneath impressive 12ft high ceilings.
An eclectic furniture collection builds a sophisticated look.
A chestnut brown tufted leather sofa complements a rich wood coffered ceiling in the cosy library/den.
In the corner, a librarian ladder climbs the book stacks. An elegant chair and side table fashion a cosy reading nook.
In the back parlour lounge, wise monkey figurines top a vintage bar that was sourced from an old hotel.
The bar was restored and fitted with new appliances, electrics and plumbing.
The top floor of the five story townhouse contains three of the bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room and a “hidden” office.
A production office is located on the garden level of the home. Streamlined desks, exposed brickwork and industrial style lighting gives this space its own distinctive character from the house.
The property also boasts its own ten seat home theatre.
String lights add a magical twinkle up on the fully furnished roof deck.
A dining area is partially shaded under a wood pergola, whilst the outdoor sofa and chairs bask in the sun.
A Jacuzzi bubbles in a rooftop hideaway.
The master bedroom suite is on the third floor. A small sofa aesthetically matches the upholstered bed. A large bedroom rug holds the arrangement together.
A second bedroom harbours a quirky zoo of ceramic animal heads across the TV wall.
The master bathroom features a double sink bathroom vanity with a luxe Nero Marquina marble countertop.
A custom walk-in closet offers a plethora of clothing and accessory storage options.
2036 Fifth Avenue is located just one block from 125th Street, a vibrant boulevard lined with restaurants and shops.
Architect: Worrell Yeung
We travel next to an apartment located in the historic Gilsey House building, in the NoMad neighbourhood of Manhattan.
During this remodel, all existing walls were removed to highlight the historic windows, original moulding, and steel structure. Now natural sunlight hits clean white walls and vibrant artwork at every turn.
A light grey kitchen provides gentle contrast against the white backdrop.
Henry Le Monnier’s Source Verdier, 1931, makes an eye-catching addition above the stove and a stunning marble backsplash.
A small shelf is integrated into the dramatic marble slab.
The exposed steel structure of the building creates a cool industrial vibe.
A built-in bookcase rises in front of the stairs, creating one connected wooden volume within the open layout.
Sections of the bookcase remain backless to let light and visuals flow through.
The custom staircase design melds smoothly with the bookshelves.
Decorative items break up the book collection.
Bright wall art fashions areas of interest as we move through the loft.
Reclaimed wood doors were salvaged and refurbished to create historical interludes within the minimalistic decor scheme.
Exposed pipes continue the industrial thread throughout the loft, sometimes colourfully highlighted in a playful pink finish.
A home workspace has been created with a bespoke black marble desktop and a lively gallery wall.
Another custom-built bookcase and staircase combo build a cool kid’s space.
This time, cheerful turquoise paintwork colours the shelves and treads. Ash wood floors brighten the space.
A wild black and white decor scheme brings the family bathroom to life. Bold yellow bathroom fixtures further accentuate the fabulous concept.
The floor plan demonstrates how the master bathroom runs off the long dressing area of the master suite. The child’s room has access to the family bathroom just opposite, by the stairs.

Sarah M. Broom was writing long before Hurricane Katrina. What would ultimately become her memoir, The Yellow House, started as a collection of notes and essays on the house she grew up in, her family, her neighbors, and her local community in New Orleans. She began in the late 1990s after leaving home for college, and it eventually became impossible for her to see the work as anything other than a book project: a family portrait and a history of New Orleans, which would explore the larger social narrative of the United States.
‘The Yellow House’ by Sarah M. Broom is an absorbing debut that is both memoir and commentary about her New Orleans East family in a pre and post-Hurricane Katrina world. Broom’s writing style is inviting, filled with facts, and enough descriptive detail to keep me engaged.
Sarah Broom: The Yellow House May 28, 2020 by Michael Schulder • At Home With Authors • 66min If you hope to immerse yourself in our one-hour conversation with Sarah Broom but only have a moment to spare, please sample the first two minutes.
Sarah Broom’s The Yellow House is a memoir that is at once intensely personal and of wide and universal appeal. Broom brings her journalistic experience to bear in order to trace her family’s.
While it’s impossible to underscore Hurricane Katrina’s impact on her family and the city at large, Broom’s hope with The Yellow House is to reveal the ways in which Katrina was no singular catastrophe. “When we boil Katrina down to a weather event, we really miss the point,” Broom told me recently over the phone. “It’s so crucially important for me to put Katrina in context, to situate it as one in a long line of things that are literally baked into the soil of this place.”
Broom recognized these connections, but her aim was not so clear to publishers. “The main complaint was that I needed to choose,” Broom recalled. “That I was either going to write a book about New Orleans or a book about my family, but not both—which was so confounding to me that I couldn’t even process it.” While memoir is often pigeonholed as subjective and emotional, the genre is a genuine entry point for history: Collective historical narratives are drawn from individual experiences. Broom writes in her book, “The facts of the world before me inform, give shape and context to my own life. The Yellow House was witness to our lives. When it fell down, something in me burst. My mother is always saying, Begin as you want to end. But my beginning precedes me.”

In the book, Broom characterizes the events leading up to her mother’s purchase of the Yellow House in 1961, starting with the development of their New Orleans East neighborhood in the late 1950s. “From the beginning, no one could agree on what to call the place. But namelessness is a form of naming,” she writes. Broom notes that a pamphlet written by a local advertising agency promoting the area’s early development stated, “Here lies the opportunity for the city’s further expansion, toward the complete realization of its destiny.” She then offers periodicals and mayoral speeches that show how the area’s promise never came to pass. This scheme to drain the wetlands and get rich, Broom writes, was “not so different from the founding tale of New Orleans itself.”
Broom’s interest in her family’s neighborhood baffled others. Discovering archival photos of her father and fact-checking locations for a memoir was one thing, but researching the deterioration of residential zoning in New Orleans East to explore systematic disenfranchisement was another. No history had been written of the area; neither academics nor writers considered it essential to do so. After Broom pressed one city-records employee about zoning issues, his superior remarked to Broom, “We don’t have the liberty of going around and examining things the way we think makes sense.” It’s a telling statement, given that Broom’s book is an effort to take otherwise separate narratives and weave them together in order to construct a more expansive perspective on American history.
Before undertaking the creation of a heretofore unwritten social history, Broom returned to her earliest inspirations: her family and neighbors. The youngest of 12 siblings, Broom developed the habit of writing down conversations. This act of note-taking took root out of love, but over time it evolved into the motivation for her work as a writer. “For some reason, I had a very strong sense that everything [my family] said is critically important,” she told me. “I just love how they put words together.” In what could have been a simple exchange about what it was like for her mother to have a 12th child, Broom writes about the delicate nuance of managing the conversation.
When you told Dad you were pregnant again, did he say something?
No.
What did he say?
Nothing.
Not a single word?
Here we go again! You were born in seventy-niyen. They say you were in distress. All them children I had, ain’t none of them ever been in no distress. And you have been in it ever since.
Interviewing her mother required great care and boundaries. As Broom notes in the book, “Mom closes down passageways to memory when something doesn’t make sense or when the thing or person no longer exists, which is possibly the same thing.” Broom told me that she had to work to “move beyond hagiography … not think of her as a mother, but to think of her as just a woman who made a series of choices. I created a physical distance for myself.”
Sarah Broom The Yellow House
Tumblr media
A hybrid project, The Yellow House required a lucid and thoughtful structure. “I made no distinction then or now between the house, my family, the street, New Orleans East, New Orleans, America. Those were all the same subject to me,” Broom told me. “And so how I did it structurally, first, I started with a family timeline: ‘In 1914, X happened.’ Then I layered on top of the family timeline the city timeline. Then I layered atop the city timeline, almost like a painting—there’s an actual file where this happens—I layered American history, and then I layered on top of that New Orleans East history. In that way, I could see very clearly the interstices where things met up. And then I could understand the story differently.”
Broom found that the absence of her home and the memories that collected there drove the framework of The Yellow House. “I knew when I started collecting evidence, so to speak, that I was trying to find the architecture of the book,” she said. “I needed to know where the beams were and what was the supporting wall. I literally thought of it as a house because I knew that I was trying to put a lot in it.” Using movement, not unlike sections of a piece of music, Broom found “a structure that felt a little malleable, where within each segment there could be differences in rhythm, and pace, and tone, and overall feeling, so that theoretically you could move the pieces around and still have a story.” The constant motion shares a double meaning with the themes of the book—migration and the threat of gentrification. “The book itself needed to feel and have this sense that this kind of displacement and scattering—inside the city and even now, just with people getting kicked out of neighborhoods and the rent being too high,” Broom said. “The book would contain this feeling that things were moving all over the place and needed to be gathered back together again.”
The Yellow House’s destruction, first by the flood and then by the city’s demolition of what remained, and the subsequent diaspora of her family, left Broom with an aching sense of absence. To confront this, she inserted herself more fully into the fabric of the book. As a teenager, she took two unreliable city buses from New Orleans East to the French Quarter to her job as a barista. As a successful adult, Broom returned to the city’s most historic district, a space that depends on the African American service workers who often cannot afford to live within its boundaries. Once behind the counter, Broom was now the local.
She sought to upend the conventional wisdom about this tourist-heavy area at the port of New Orleans, once a site of slave trading but now a fantasy that thrives on hedonistic behavior, southern charm, and decadence. “I’m always trying to make it about me in the French Quarter, about the interactions I’m having and how I’m seeing it specifically so I could turn these very trotted-out ideas on their head,” she told me. “If you’re trying to sort of examine the underbelly of something, you have to be able to move with the discovery and be malleable, so to speak.”
Living in the French Quarter placed Broom squarely in the city’s mythological and cultural heart. Moving from the periphery to the city center, Broom laid claim to a place that she was always made to feel was out of her reach. Too often geographic displacement narrows the comprehensive record of a place, privileging certain people with the final word on what is deemed history. Broom had to return to the city’s gem, home to its greatest pleasures and its greatest shame, to write a story that would reconcile her losses with the losses of others. She expanded the collective understanding of American history in the process.
Sarah M. Broom’s debut book The Yellow Housereads like a multifaceted map, not just of a place but an expanse of time, marking both relationships and absences. Part scrapbook and part oral history, it is an expertly curated museum exhibit of Broom’s family history. It is also a portrait of New Orleans East across the last 100 years.
Broom expertly starts from a time before she was born, enabling her to narrate her own birth and her early years. Through archival research, interviews, and her memories, Broom weaves a story that is wholly hers, without neglecting the lives of the many characters around her, including her mother, siblings, neighbors, and friends.
The memories and family tales recounted range from small, deeply personal moments—rich sensory descriptions of her surroundings on the day she put on her first pair of glasses—to the highly public and politicized. On the fourteenth anniversary of Katrina, Broom’s book not only remembers the disaster, but challenges readers to reckon with social and political structures in New Orleans that predated Katrina by over a century. Of the news coverage of that storm, she writes: “Those of us who were born to New Orleans already knew its underbellies. Storms, of all sorts, were facts of our lives. Those images shown on the news of fellow citizens drowned, abandoned, and calling for help were not news to us, but still further evidence of what we long ago knew.”
Sarah Broom The Yellow House Award
The titular shotgun house in New Orleans East is one of the central characters in the book. Already sinking into the soft earth when Broom’s mother purchased it in 1961, the yellow house on Wilson Street was not in a glamorous enough part of the city to appear on maps, but it was sold with the promise of a bright future. Cleaved in two during the storm, the yellow house lives on in Broom’s search to determine who has a right to the property, raising questions of governance, jurisdiction, and inequality. This book is filled with questions. Most go unanswered, but they provide a thrumming energy. What do we mean when we say home? How does one find home beyond the physical? How do we create these sacred spaces and who do we hold tightly?
The memoir-historiography hybrid is largely successful at creating an intricate narrative of family and place, but the four parts of the book feel disparate. They are written in different modes and the naming conventions of the short chapters are not consistent. At times, these structural elements do not feel precise or intentionally lawless, which distracts from the momentum of the story.
Sarah M Broom The Yellow House
Early in the book, Broom writes what feels like a provocation, part promise and part warning: “When people tell you their stories, they can say whatever they want.” What seems to be an offhand axiom at the beginning of the book turns out to be a central tenet throughout. Her telling of her own story is a testament to what we have to hold onto after forces of nature destroy our lives: family lore, and the moments that hang in our memories.

Historic Foursquare Home With Hollywood Ties Hits A Red-Hot Los Angeles Market
The American Foursquare-style home, now for sale at $4.25 million, was previously renovated and … [+] enhanced by Steven Antin of “The Goonies” and “Burlesque” film fame.
Hilton & Hyland
Dig deep enough through the history of almost any Los Angeles home and you’ll likely come across a tie to Hollywood—whether it’s as an owner, former resident, house-flipper, or guest.
This classic residence in the Spaulding Square neighborhood of Los Angeles has twice been home to showbiz types. Seven years ago, director-turned-period renovator/designer Steven Antin of The Goonies and Burlesque fame set a price record for the historic neighborhood when he sold the 1919 American Foursquare-style home for $2.932 million.
Some 80 years prior to Antin’s stay, the property was home to Pedro de Cordoba, a classically trained actor whose credits include Cecil B. DeMille’s 1915 film Carmen and the 1940 Boris Karloff-led thriller Before I Hang.
Now for sale at $4.25 million, the house has been extensively updated and enhanced while staying true to the classic architecture. Features of note include beautiful hardwood floors, custom French windows and designer fixtures and fittings that tastefully complement the home’s character details. A 40-foot saltwater swimming pool with a spa highlights the private and hedged backyard.

Located off Sunset Boulevard, the setting was popular among actors and directors because of its proximity to nearby film lots. Actress Lucille Ball and director Hugo Hass are among stage legends who once lived in the area. More recently, the neighborhood has been home to such stars as Lena Dunham and Jodie Foster. The hit television show This Is Us is also filmed in the area.

Hilton & Hyland
The Period Revival-style homes that make up the eight-block neighborhood are protected under the Historic Preservation Overlay Zone Board, and it’s a major reason why homes in the neighborhood continue to be some of the most sought after in Los Angeles, according to listing agent Jonathan Nash of Beverly Hills-based luxury brokerage Hilton & Hyland.
Tumblr media
Custom French doors unite the 1919-built home’s indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Hilton & Hyland
“Because Spaulding Square is protected under the HPOZ laws, it is a timeless neighborhood,” Nash said. “In an ever-changing city, it’s kept its local charm through the decades.”
The market for single-family homes in Los Angeles is hotter than ever, according to Nash, who said that exceptional properties such as the home on North Genesee Avenue are still achieving premiums.
Tumblr media
Custom lighting makes the grounds and the home’s classic exterior pop—particularly at night.
Hilton & Hyland
“This is certainly the quintessential example of a historic property finished to a very high standard,” he said.
Looking ahead, Nash believes the demand for quality homes will only accelerate over the next few months as pandemic-related restrictions ease and people begin to travel more. That could lead to even more competition in an already highly competitive housing market.
Tumblr media
Hedges cleverly conceal and projection screen in the backyard.
Hilton & Hyland
“We have experienced a high demand for great real estate over the past 12 months, and much of that has been achieved without the airways being open,” he said. “As the world continues to recover and global travel becomes accessible again, I believe the L.A. market is going to see an even greater level of demand.”
Hilton & Hyland is an exclusive member of Forbes Global Properties, a consumer marketplace and membership network of elite brokerages selling the world’s most luxurious homes.

20 of the world’s most stylish dog-friendly hotels
The year of the pandemic has also been the year of puppy love, with more of us turning to our furry friends for comfort than perhaps ever before. Where would we be without our four-legged companions during lockdown (and life in general) to break up our working-from-home days with cuddles, chasing tails, and a much needed breath of fresh air on a lunch break outing.
If your daily ‘walkies’ are starting to feel a bit too familiar, why not swap the local park for one of these canine chic boutique hotels, where pups can expect to be pampered as much as any other guest. From doggy afternoon tea, V.I.Pooch packages, personalised bedding and dedicated dog room service menus, these paw-fect places are the pick of the luxury litter. Because your dog deserves a holiday as much as you do…
The Farncombe Estate, Cotswolds – UK
Tumblr media
An eclectic village-style assortment of houses, huts and hideaways set within the picturesque grounds of the Farncombe Estate, The Fish Hotel barks up all the right trees (and treehouses). Welcoming medium sized, well behaved pooches to their cosy selection of dog-friendly rooms, which are located on the hillside and spread throughout various individual buildings in the grounds. Be sure to book one of the Medium Rooms, Veranda Rooms, Small Suites, and Big Suites if you’re planning to bring your pup along, or one of the magical treetop cabin-style suites complete with underfloor heating, wrap-around decking with heated tubs, and woodland views. These rooms have wooden floors and easy access to your car along with 400 acres of Cotswold countryside on your doorstep for those all-important dog walks. Every doggy desire has been catered for throughout the estate, including dog hydration stations, a ‘dunk your dog’ bath tub (with canine shampoo and conditioner), a dedicated dog agility course, and doggy afternoon tea – luxury tit-bits from the likes of Woof & Brew and The Barking Bakery feature on the menu.
A stick’s throw from The Fish is the honey-hued Dormy House, which also welcomes dogs in their Danish Court rooms, including Rose Cottage, Courtyard Suites, and Comfy Rooms, all a short walk from the main farmhouse.
Tumblr media
Paws for thought: A charge of £30 per dog per stay applies and includes a cosy dog bed in the room, two dog bowls, some lovely doggie treats, and a dog towel. You are welcome to relax in the bar and lounge with your pooch and you can dine from the bar menu, but note that dogs should not be taken into the main restaurant at The Fish. Dogs are welcome to dine with their owners in The Potting Shed at Dormy House.
Ovolo Hotels, Sydney & Brisbane – Australia & Hong Kong
Tumblr media
A colourful collection of contemporary boutique hotels in Australia and Hong Kong, Ovolo Hotels offer an indulgent V.I.Pooch package at Ovolo The Valley Brisbane, Ovolo Woolloomooloo in Sydney, and Ovolo Central Hong Kong. Wake up in one of the trendy, art-filled suites and roll over to your furry friend, who will be provided with their own doggy bed, food and water bowls, and a doggy bag with especially designed toys and treats. With dog-friendly staff on hand to help with late-night walkies (because dogs can feel jet-lagged too!) and recommend local dog-friendly dinner spots, you and your pooch will be made to feel instantly at home with Ovolo Hotels.
The Plymouth South Beach, Miami – USA
Tumblr media
Top left image credit: @wtfrenchie
This four-storey luxury hotel is a peach-and-cream Art Deco icon with a contemporary twist, where you’ll never have to leave your best friend behind. Spend days beneath a pastel parasol by the pool or private beach at The Plymouth South Beach with an expertly-crafted cocktail in hand, and your pooch by your side – with personalised Plymouth doggy bowls included in every canine booking. Watch the famous South Beach sunrises as you snuggle up to your pup, before enjoying one of the hotel’s doggy brunches and a sun-soaked walk in the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens or the Collins Park, located just around the corner from this Art Moderne masterpiece.
Kristiania Lech, Lech am Arlberg – Austria
Tumblr media
An exquisitely decorated Alpine retreat with the feel of a private residence rather than a hotel, Kristiania Lech is just a short walk from the centre of the upmarket ski resort of Lech. Dogs are welcome to stay in every single one of the 29 rooms and suites at Kristiania Lech, so both you and your canine companion can enjoy the original pieces of artwork and spectacular views over the pretty village of Lech and towards the Alps. Warm up with some cuddles after a day on the slopes on the hotel’s sun terrace or Kaminzimmer (fireplace), or ask the resident leisure consultant for the best Alpine walks if you’re looking for more mountain air – the hotel would be more than happy to arrange a picnic in the snow for you and your pup.
Paws for thought: A charge of €45 per dog per day applies – well-behaved dogs are allowed everywhere except the restaurant.
Château La Chenèviere Hotel, Normandy – France
Tumblr media
An elegant 18th-century château surrounded by attractive gardens and parkland, Château La Chenevière Hotel combines the feel of an English country house with classical French style. Claiming the Country House Hotel of the Year title at the SLH Awards 2020, every pastel tinted room has a garden view, making it the perfect place to enjoy the countryside charm of Normandy with your chien in tow. Explore the 12 acres of parkland with your pooch, with secluded walled gardens and a heated outdoor swimming pool (which is open from May-September). Or venture outside the hotel on one of the hotel’s bicycles (if your pup is basket-sized!) for a day trip to Omaha Beach or historic Bayeux.
Forestis, the Dolomites – Italy
Tumblr media
The South Tyrolean mountainscape is a playground for pups and nature lovers alike, with endless forest trails and snow-dusted scenery surrounding Forestis – a summit-level sanctuary in the UNESCO Dolomites. You and your pooch will be greeted by resident chocolate Labrador, Amadeus, who can show you all the dog-friendly places to rest your paws. Make the most of the surrounding greenery in the summer, and pick up some snowshoes in the colder months to trek through the high altitude wilderness. This is a boutique escape designed to help you switch off and immerse yourself in the regenerative power of nature.
The Nare, Cornwall – UK
Tumblr media
Flanked by colourful gardens and overlooking the gentle waves of Gerrans Bay, The Nare has all the exclusivity of a dog-friendly private island. The Nare’s beachside position puts Cornwall’s captivating coast at your feet, and with the newly-kitted out country house boot room courtesy of partners The Original Muckboot Company, guests can borrow a pair of comfortable wellies for strolls along the sandy beach or coastal footpaths. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in all the rooms and gardens at The Nare, with dinner from the dogs’ table d’hôte menu included in the daily dog charge.
Paws for thought: As with all guests at The Nare those with special dietary requirements and desires are well looked after. The dogs’ à la carte menu has a wider choice. Outdoorsy types and working dogs that don’t need to come into the hotel may prefer instead to stay in the working dogs’ kennels on self-catering terms, for which there is no charge.
The Sukhothai Bangkok – Thailand
Tumblr media
Experience serenity and relaxation in the heart of the city at The Sukhothai Bangkok. Take your pooch for a stroll in the carefully landscaped hotel gardens, before enjoying a dip in the 25-metre infinity pool. Rooms blend traditional details with contemporary flair – you’ll be cocooned by polished teak and the Thai silks, with large flat-screen TVs and Bose audio systems for a modern interlude.
Paws for thought: A charge of 500 TBH per dog is applied to each stay, and dogs must be kept on a leash at all times when on hotel property (except in your room).
The Adelphi Hotel, Saratoga Springs – USA
Tumblr media
When you first walk through the impressive entrance of The Adelphi Hotel, it’s easy to cast yourself back to the old world grace and grandeur of the 19th-century New York social set. Welcoming pets of all sizes for a one time fee of $75, dogs are allowed practically everywhere in The Adelphi – from all guest rooms, the lobby, all common areas to all three of the hotel restaurant patios overlooking Broadway. With especially designed canine amenities, including cosy beds, food and water bowls, leashes and collars, The Adelphi keeps its four-legged family front of mind.
Hotel Lilla Roberts, Helsinki – Finland
Tumblr media
With its location and elegant, homely atmosphere, Hotel Lilla Roberts puts you and your pup in prime position for a luxury Helsinki holiday. While away an afternoon in the Art Deco lounge cosied up beside a crackling fire, or ask the hotel staff to point you in the right direction for the best local parks to play fetch, Finnish style – and with over 80 dog-friendly parks and dedicated doggy beaches to choose from, this Scandi city is the paw-fect choice for pooch parents.
Hotel Tannenhof, St. Anton am Arlberg – Austria
Tumblr media
Close to pristine, powdery slopes and a picturesque village with traditional Tyrolean lodges and stone farmhouses, historic church and cosy restaurants, Hotel Tannenhof is set within a true winter wonderland. You and your pup will be given a warm welcome by resident black Labradors Emma and Tommy, before settling in to one of just seven elegant, wood-panelled suites. Cuddle up on the hotel’s custom-made beds, or have a post-ski snooze beside one of the open fireplaces.
Hôtel Crillon le Brave, Provence – France
Tumblr media
Left image credit: @victoria_steiner
A quintessentially French bolthole that fuses the charms of a 17th-century hamlet with contemporary luxury, Hôtel Crillon le Brave is simply Provençal perfection. The hotel’s nine stone houses possess all the charm of French countryside living, with terracotta tiles, colourful throws and handpicked antique furniture. If you can bring yourself to leave this hilltop hideaway, take a tour of the nearby vineyards and wineries or wander the fragrant lavender fields of Sault.
Paws for thought: Be sure to book one of the Prestige Rooms if you’re planning to travel with your pooch, as pet-friendly rooms must be requested in advance. Small dogs (weighing under 10kg) are welcome to stay at Hôtel Crillon le Brave for a charge of €30  per night.
The Nimb, Copenhagen – Denmark
Tumblr media
A Moorish-styled palace with a striking Venetian marble façade, all rooms but one at The Nimb have a log fire and view of the Tivoli Gardens. Dogs are welcomed with a hamper of goodies, including toys, turndown treats, luxury bedding, food and water bowls, and a ‘Do Not Disturb/Dog Sleeping’ card. A whole team of doggy dedicated staff are on hand at The Nimb, from dog sitters and walkers, to groomers and a veterinary service, your four-legged friends will hardly need to lift a paw.
Paws for thought: Dogs are not allowed in Tivoli Gardens (except for the annual Dog’s Day in June). Dogs are also not allowed in The Nimb’s restaurants, so be sure to request a pet sitter at least 24 hours in advance.
Hacienda Zorita Wine Hotel & Organic Farm, Salamanca – Spain
Tumblr media
A former monastery overlooking the River Tormes, Hacienda Zorita Wine Hotel & Organic Farm is a magnificent wine resort with an impressive history that dates back to the 14th century. Look out for the working sheep dogs on the nearby farm, just a 10-minute trip from Hacienda Zorita where guests can enjoy cheese tasting and an authentic countryside meal experience. Therre are plenty of vineyard walks to enjoy with your canine companion, before indulging in some of Hacienda Zorita’s specialities, including extra virgin olive oil, local cheese and pata negra produced on the estate.
Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club, East Sussex – UK
Tumblr media
A listed 19th-century mansion set in 186 acres of landscaped parkland, Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club puts the natural beauty of Ashdown Forest at your feet. Book one of the dog-friendly Fairway Junior Suites, with French doors that open directly out onto the parkland, complete with a private terrace and outdoor furniture. Four-legged guests at Ashdown Park can expect the royal treatment, with their own dog basket, blanket and bowls provided along with dinner and a goodie bag from Arden Grange, a family-run business that has been developing superior, premium food for animals since 1996. Be sure to ask the concierge for a map of nearby dog walking trails, along with their recommendations for dog-friendly pubs in the area.
Paws for thought: A supplementary charge of £30 per dog, per room, will be charged in addition to the room rates. Dogs are regrettably not permitted in the Main House.
Villa La Madonna, Piedmont – Italy
Tumblr media
Verdant hills, vineyards, and terracotta roofs – Villa La Madonna overlooks the Bormida Valley in Piedmont, north-western Italy where guests are guaranteed to get a taste for rural life. Run by Swedish couple Helen and Mikael (with their adorable dog Stella), your pup will keep good canine company at Villa La Madonna, which is also the seasonal home to some truffle hunting hounds in the autumn months. If you can tear yourself away, the Alps are only two hours to the north, and the Italian Riviera one hour to the south – with plenty of picturesque walks for you and your cane to enjoy.
Crossbasket Castle, High Blantyre – Scotland
Tumblr media
Steeped in history, Crossbasket Castle is a landmark Scottish retreat. Michelin-star chef Albert Roux has created a special menu for man’s best friend, featuring a a selection of salmon, mackerel, spinach and brown rice risotto, turkey and sweet potato stew and meatloaf with chicken jelly. Each item on the ‘dog’s dinner’ costs £10.50 and is available to order via room service, so you can treat yourself to a cosy night in. If you need to walk off all the night’s indulgence, the castle grounds include a large woodland area, extensive nature walks and a beautiful stretch of river with majestic waterfalls.
