The year 1919 was transformative around the world and an exceptionally creative year for composers. On the global stage, troops returned home from World War I; the Treaty of Versailles was signed; and the idea of self-determination took hold. A new era of modernity was born with innovation and consumerism defining the interwar period. 1919 saw new or revised works by many of the finest early 20th…

Long time listeners may recall the original version of this mix, which we first shared back in November of 2017. Although this new version is shorter, it has been substantially revised and we think it is overall an improvement. Those who just can’t get enough Kinks covers and/or wish to form their own opinion can find the earlier version here.

Notes:
Nice video of this hilarious show. Filmed from the orchestra. Lots of wideshots, which can lead to some washout at times. Beautiful zooms however on the cast (Alex Brightman fancam at times but it never takes away from the video!). Overall a great video of this Hilarious and perfect production.

Notes:
Fantastic video of Colin's Orpheus Debut! there is a small head obstruction in the far left bottom that obstructs nothing but Hermes legs at times. This was a very unique and stressful show for the cast as they were down a worker and had everyone in the company on in the show. the show started almost 25 minutes late as they had to rehearse and change choreo. The lights hit in wait for me and the choreo change is quite fun to see and it's unique!

Notes:
Big head obstruction on the left side of the screen where the crib, and Charles room is. it's worked around fine, but it's there and can be very distracting at times. besides that it's a great 4k video and it's a unique one, because they had asl and captions so the cast had to stick on script, which led to some fun choreo improv!

Buchanan was born in 1954 in Glasgow, and won a scholarship to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where in 1974, she was awarded with Student of the Year prize. She also won the Governor’s Recital Prize that same year.
In 1975 she auditioned for Richard Bonynge and Joan Sutherland and was offered a three year contract with the Australian Opera. Her professional debut was in January 1976, singing the role of Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, one she was to repeat many times throughout the world.
She made her British debut at Glyndebourne in 1978, again singing Pamina, in the Cox/Hockney production and in 1981 she sang The Countess in Peter Hall’s production of The Marriage of Figaro, a role repeated for the 50th Anniversary of the company in 1984 with Bernard Haitink conducting.
1978 saw her as Micaela at the Vienna State Opera in the legendary production by Franco Zefirelli, with Domingo, Obratsova and Mazurok. Conducted by Carlos Kleiber, the performance was broadcast live throughout Europe and released on CD and DVD.
Isobel’s Covent Garden debut was in Parsifal, conducted by Solti. Among other roles, she went on to sing Sophie in Werther, with Alfredo Kraus and Teresa Berganza, later recording the opera with Jose Carreras and Frederica von Stade, Sir Colin Davis conducting. She has appeared in opera houses in Cologne, Paris, Munich, Santa Fe, Brussels,Hamburg,Sydney, Wellington Chicago (with Pavarotti and Bergonzi) and Monte Carlo (with Raimondi).
She has also appeared with all the major British orchestras and has collaborated with many of the world’s leading conductors, including Solti, Haitink, Andrew Davis, Colin Davis, Celibidache, Pritchard, Mariner, Kleiber and Menuhin.
Isobel has made numerous recordings and in 1981 the BBC made a documentary, La Belle Isobel, of her career up to that time. She has had her own television series and has also appeared on such programmes as Face the Music and The Michael Parkinson Show.
After bringing up her two daughters, Isobel has recently resumed her career singing recitals with Eugene Asti and Malcolm Martineau at St John’s, Smith Square, as well as performing Sheherezade with the South Bank Sinfonia and, most recently, Haydn with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Walton’s Façade with Jason Thornton and the Bath Phil at Longleat.
She also teaches voice privately, is a regular tutor for the Samling Foundation, gives master classes and workshops throughout the UK and teaches at the Guildhall School as a visiting professor.

On Sunday 6 October 2013, Kiri Te Kanawa makes her name as a Downton star, playing Australian soprano Dame Nellie Melba. She apparently reduced the cast and crew to tears during rehearsals.
2. Kiri Te Kanawa's name
Dame Kiri was born Claire Mary Teresa Rawstron in Gisborne on New Zealand's North Island. She was adopted by Māori parents Thomas and Nell Te Kanawa.
3. Gold record in New Zealand
She's one of New Zealand's finest musical exports: her recording of the Nuns' Chorus from the Strauss operetta Casanova was the country's first gold record.
4. No audition required
Dame Kiri impressed the London Opera Centre in 1966 - so much so, that she enrolled without an audition to study under Vera Rózsa and James Robertson. Her teachers noticed her gift for captivating audiences, despite her initial lack of technique.
5. Countess at Covent Garden
Dame Kiri was offered the role of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro at Covent Garden in 1971, after a wildly successful audition. Conductor Sir Colin Davis said: "I couldn't believe my ears. I've taken thousands of auditions, but it was such a fantastically beautiful voice."
6. Royal wedding singer
Dame Kiri performed Handel's Let the Bright Seraphim at the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981.
7. Honorary degrees
Dame Kiri's received honorary degrees from the universities of Bath, Cambridge, Dundee, Durham, Nottingham, Oxford, Sunderland, and Warwick. She's also quite the international honorary academic, with further degrees from the universities of Chicago, Auckland and Waikato.
8. Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation
Not only is she a legendary opera star, she's determined to support young singers in their path to greatness. She founded the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation with the vision "that talented young New Zealand singers and musicians with complete dedication to their art may receive judicious and thoughtful mentoring and support to assist them in realising their dreams."
9. Kiri Te Kanawa's royal audience
Kiri performed at the opening of the Commonwealth Games in 2006, singing Happy Birthday to Her Majesty the Queen herself.
10. Classical BRIT Awards Winners
Honoring her international success, Dame Kiri picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Classical BRIT Awards in 2010. It's just one of a handful of prestigious honours and awards: as well as being made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to opera, she scooped a Grammy for Best Opera Recording in 1984 for a disc of Mozart.
