Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill[a] (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British statesman, soldier, and writer who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice, from 1940 to 1945 during the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. Apart from two years between 1922 and 1924, he was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1900 to 1964 and represented a total of five constituencies. Ideologically an economic liberal and imperialist, he was for most of his career a member of the Conservative Party, which he led from 1940 to 1955. He was a member of the Liberal Party from 1904 to 1924.
Of mixed English and American parentage, Churchill was born in Oxfordshire to a wealthy, aristocratic family. He joined the British Army in 1895 and saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War, gaining fame as a war correspondent and writing books about his campaigns. Elected a Conservative MP in 1900, he defected to the Liberals in 1904. In H. H. Asquith's Liberal government, Churchill served as President of the Board of Trade and Home Secretary, championing prison reform and workers' social security. As First Lord of the Admiralty during the First World War, he oversaw the Gallipoli Campaign but, after it proved a disaster, he was demoted to Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He resigned in November 1915 and joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers on the Western Front for six months. In 1917, he returned to government under David Lloyd George and served successively as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, and Secretary of State for the Colonies, overseeing the Anglo-Irish Treaty and British foreign policy in the Middle East. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Stanley Baldwin's Conservative government, returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure and depressing the UK economy.
Out of government during his so-called "wilderness years" in the 1930s, Churchill took the lead in calling for British rearmament to counter the growing threat of militarism in Nazi Germany. At the outbreak of the Second World War he was re-appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. In May 1940, he became Prime Minister, succeeding Neville Chamberlain. Churchill formed a national government and oversaw British involvement in the Allied war effort against the Axis powers, resulting in victory in 1945. After the Conservatives' defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition. Amid the developing Cold War with the Soviet Union, he publicly warned of an "iron curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. Between his terms as Prime Minister, he authored several books recounting his experience during the war for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. He lost the 1950 election, but was returned to office in 1951. His second term was preoccupied with foreign affairs, especially Anglo-American relations and the preservation of what remained of the British Empire with India now no longer part of it. Domestically, his government emphasised housebuilding and completed the development of a nuclear weapon (begun by his predecessor). In declining health, Churchill resigned as Prime Minister in 1955, although he remained an MP until 1964. Upon his death in 1965, he was given a state funeral.
Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, Churchill remains popular in the Anglosphere, where he is seen as a victorious wartime leader who played an important role in defending Europe's liberal democracy against the spread of fascism. On the other hand, he has been criticised for some wartime events and also for his imperialist views.

Thomas and Friends: Legends of Sodor (Story 5): Gordon’s Speed Record
Narrator: Gordon’s Speed Record
Scene opens with Gordon, thundering down the line with the Express
Narrator: For many years, Gordon is the fastest engine on Sir Topham Hatt’s railway
Gordon: Express coming through!
Scene transitions to Gordon puffing into Tidmouth Sheds
Narrator: After finishing his passenger run, Gordon returned to Tidmouth Sheds, only to find a visitor in his berth
Gordon sees a Green Tender Engine who has a body like him, talking to the others
Gordon: Hello, what’s this?
Thomas: Oh! Gordon! Your here, have you met the visitor? His name is-
Gordon: *recognizes the engine* Green Arrow?!
Green Arrow: Well hello cousin Gordon!
Molly: Wait, you two know each other?
Gordon: Yes Molly, Green Arrow is one of my four cousins, following Ryan, Spencer, and Mallard
Green Arrow: Well yes, anyways I heard you held a record for the most speed around the island Gordon
Gordon: Well of course I do! I’m an express engine
Green Arrow: *chuckled* Oh Gordon, you don’t know how fast I am, and want to know my record?
Gordon: What?
Green Arrow: 2000!
Thomas/Edward/Henry/James/Percy/Emily/Molly/Rosie/Rebecca/Stanley: Oooooooooh
Stanley: Sounds like you got Competition, Gordon
James: Yeah, he might be our new express engine!
Gordon: Oh the indignity
Rebecca: *giggled* You know Gordon, he might be faster than the Flying Scotsman
Gordon: *flabbergasted but then crossed* Ooooh that’s it
Green Arrow: Anyways, I might as well get ready to collect my coaches, I brought them with me from The Mainland *he blew his whistle as he puffed out*
Gordon: *stops Green Arrow* Hold it right there Cousin! I’ll have that record topped!
Green Arrow: I like a good challenge from you Gordon!
Scene transitions to Gordon thundering down the line with the Express
Narrator: Later, Gordon was determined to beat Green Arrow’s record
Gordon: If he did it, then I’ll do it!
Green Arrow puffed down the line, pulling his Express Coaches in a RWS Color
Green Arrow: Oh, hello Gordon! Trying to beat my record?
Gordon: Yes! I’ll show you what I can do!
Green Arrow: I doubt it cousin, anyways I got to go! *he blew his whistle and puffs down the line*
Gordon: Oooooooh
Scene transitions to Gordon puffing into Vicarstown
Narrator: When Gordon arrived at Vicarstown
Gordon: What’s my record?
Gordon’s Driver: *pulls out his Stopwatch* 500
Gordon: Not high enough!
Merlin: *puffs in as he brought flatbeds of Steel from The Mainland* Are you trying to beat Green Arrow’s record?
Gordon: How do you know?
Merlin: Well, I was told about it, believe it or not there was an experimental engine who can go fast at 10000 Miles!
Gordon: *surprised* Really?
Merlin: Oh yes!
Gordon: Hmmmmm, Merlin! You gave me an idea!
Scene transitions to the next day, Gordon thundered down the line with the Express
Narrator: The next day, Gordon tried again to reach a record to beat Green Arrow’s record
Gordon: If that story from Merlin is true, then I’ll definitely beat Green Arrow’s record!
Scene transitions to Gordon arriving at Vicarstown, and his drive pulls out his Stopwatch
Gordon’s Driver: 750
Gordon: It’s going a bit higher, but not quite enough
Scene transitions to the next day, Gordon thundered down the line again with the Express
Narrator: Then the next day, Gordon thundered down the line again!
Gordon: This time, I know that record will be beaten!
Suddenly, there was a faulty signal and Gordon ignored it
Narrator: A faulty signal should’ve warned Gordon that there was a train of Tar Tankers stuck on the track ahead
Scene shows Billy, pulling the line of Tar Tankers, he was crossed
Billy: Oh bother!
Gordon thundered down but he sees the tar tankers up ahead and he was shocked
Gordon: Oh no driver stop!
Gordon slammed on his brakes
Narrator: He slammed on his brakes, but it was too late!
Gordon crashes into the tar tankers, as tar splashed on him
Billy: Ow! *getting bumped*
Narrator: Luckily, no one was hurt, but Gordon was upset, his plan to beat Green Arrow’s record was ruined
Gordon: Ooooh the indignity
Scene transitions Harvey arriving with Rocky to clear the mess, Bear taking the Express, and Molly shunting Gordon to the Steamworks
Narrator: Soon, Harvey arrived with Rocky to clear the mess, Bear took the express, and Molly helped Gordon to the Steamworks
Molly: Oh dear Gordon, I’m really sorry that you had an accident while trying to beat Green Arrow’s record
Gordon: No Molly it’s not your fault, I gotten too carried away to try and beat my cousin’s speed record
Scene transitions to Gordon, at the Steamworks, getting repaired and cleaned, feeling miserable that he lost the challenge
Narrator: Later, Gordon was getting mended and cleaned, but he felt miserable
Gordon: Oh why did I believe in Merlin’s story?
Then, Sir Topham Hatt showed up
STH: The accident wasn’t your fault Gordon, we should’ve had a better signal
Gordon: Yes sir, and I guess I was foolish enough to believe Merlin’s story about an Experimental Engine that can go 10000 Miles so I can beat Green Arrow’s speed record
STH: Speed Record? Hmmmmm, why didn’t you say so!
Gordon: *puzzled* What?
STH: I never thought you asked, by taking your previous speed records and the two speed records from two days, I have this to say
Gordon: What is it sir?
STH: Gordon, you have broke the record, by going, 4500 Miles! A new record!
Gordon: What?! Then that means… I’ve beaten Green Arrow’s record! *he smiled*
Scene transitions to night as Gordon puffing into his berth at Tidmouth Sheds, the other engines were there, even Toby on a siding
Narrator: That night, the other engines have heard
Henry: Well done Gordon!
Edward: You have beaten Green Arrow’s record!
Toby: Congratulations!
Molly: That’s our express engine right there *smiled*
Gordon: Thank you all
Green Arrow: *puffed in* Hey Gordon, I wanna say, congratulations! You have surpassed me!
Gordon: And I thank you Green Arrow
Green Arrow: Hey your welcome Cousin!
Soon, Gordon and the others all chatted the night away, as Steam Clouds rolled in

Map Reading (1927-1932). Sir Stanley Spencer (English, 1891-1959). Oil on canvas. Sandham Memorial Chapel.
The officer is the only soldier in command represented in the cycle. He is shown holding a map of Macedonia, on which Spencer noted all the places that he could remember visiting there. The soldiers in the background are shown feasting on bilberries, in a landscape that might almost be Cookham. The rendering of landscape and greenery typifies Spencer’s skill at painting landscape and still-life.
