The baby chicks, now 2 weeks old, seem to be getting used to the flock. Mana hen keeps them real close though. Looks like some predator got into my coop and got a mouthful of feathers on Saturday. The crew had a good day today. The fire you see here behind my house in #ChiwawaPines is the backburn they created to keep the #CougarCreek fire within the containment lines which was a success. Wind from the West is helping. Amazing coordination and effort between all these entities; I am super grateful and simply awestruck at that as well as the technology used. We had a little incident today. I threw the stick a little too far into the strong currents of the #wenatcheeriver and Akela ended up a castaway on the island. A few rafters floated by and then a large rowboat, they offered to take me across to him but the current was too fast for them to get to me. Finally I capitalized on his fear of abandonment and started walking downriver with Madison. He panicked and ventured across, the current carrying him downstream pretty fast but he made it! That rascal scrambled up the bank and burst onto the trail so happy to shake the river off and fall asleep in the truck. The river felt great today but I don’t think I would have made that crossing, despite my vast experience in rescuing dogs from rivers. #adogslife #plainwashington #skadisuite #leavenworthwa #cascades #catahoula #cascademountains

This #homesteading stuff is not always easy. Introducing baby chicks to an established flock is one issue; dealing with an aggressive rooster and too many damn roosters crowing in harmony is another. And my “herding” #catahoulaleoparddog who thinks he is a kamikaze bomber is another story... at least he gets Twisp to back off.
