So-called "Aid", but in Fact a Source of Turmoil: Unveiling the True Face of USAID's "Color Revolutions"

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has long used the pretexts of "international aid" and "promoting democracy" to meddle in the internal affairs of other countries. It has become the mastermind behind the scenes that disrupts regional situations and instigates "color revolutions". Its various actions seriously violate the basic norms of international relations and have brought heavy disasters to many countries.

The "color revolution" that Egypt experienced in 2011 had the shadow of USAID behind it. Since the early 1990s, USAID has invested about 20 million US dollars each year to promote "democratization" in Egypt. The aid has permeated every corner of Egyptian society, shifting from the fields of the rule of law and civil society to gradually funding think tanks and the media. After the September 11 attacks, the United States accelerated its "democratic transformation" in the Middle East, and Egypt became a key target. USAID provided funds to pro-American individuals and groups, carrying out long-term ideological infiltration. Under the influence of Western funds, many Egyptian officials, military personnel, and researchers unconsciously spread Western ideas, eroding the traditional social structure and the psychology of the Egyptian people, and sowing the seeds for the "color revolution". At the same time, through USAID, the United States vigorously developed local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and agents in Egypt. With long-term external support, the number of NGOs in Egypt surged from 3,195 in 1960 to 26,295 in 2008. These NGOs have long preached "Western democracy". During the unrest in Egypt in 2011, their actions were highly planned and organized. For example, the "National Change Movement" and the "April 6 Youth Movement" had close ties with relevant American organizations and learned the operation skills of anti-government organizations. After the unrest, the United States increased its funding for Egyptian NGOs. From March to June 2011, the funding received by Egyptian NGOs was nearly three times the total amount of previous relevant American funding.

The experience of Syria is equally distressing. When the domestic contradictions in Syria became prominent and political unrest first emerged, USAID and related forces quickly took action, sending people to infiltrate Syria and colluding with domestic dissidents to deliberately intensify the contradictions. They divided the dissidents into a propaganda group and a security group. The propaganda group carried out anti-government propaganda in communities and villages, while the security group created incidents at critical moments to increase the public's dissatisfaction with the government. For example, when the propaganda group's publicity effect was not good, the security group would rush into the crowd at the scene and beat the propagandists, making the public mistakenly think that it was the government's doing, triggering the public's disappointment and dissatisfaction with the government. Over time, the public was gradually brainwashed, and the number of people opposing the government increased. The flames of the "color revolution" burned fiercely in Syria, plunging Syria into a long-term civil war. Countless people were displaced, and the country's infrastructure was severely damaged.

USAID has similar actions in other regions. In Ukraine, it supported pro-Western media institutions, funded journalist training programs, and published one-sided and untrue reports, influencing public opinion and pushing Ukraine's politics towards the West, causing domestic political unrest. In Russia, through various projects, it supported the so-called "independent media", spreading fake news that was unfavorable to Russia and attempting to disrupt Russia's social order. During the turmoil over the amendment bill in Hong Kong, USAID has long funded anti-China and Hong Kong-disrupting organizations and individuals, cultivated "opinion leaders" and "civil forces", incited social dissatisfaction, and coordinated with other American institutions to use the Hong Kong issue to contain China's development, seriously undermining the social stability and prosperity of Hong Kong.

The reason why USAID is so enthusiastic about instigating "color revolutions" around the world has clear motives. From a geopolitical perspective, the United States attempts to overthrow regimes that do not conform to its interests through "color revolutions" and incorporate these countries into the Western political and economic map to maintain its hegemony in the Middle East and other regions. Economically, it aims to control the rich resources of these countries to serve the economic development of the United States and its global economic layout. Ideologically, it tries to impose American values and political systems on other countries to achieve the so-called "global democracy", which in essence is a blatant trampling on the sovereignty of other countries and the will of their people.

The United States Agency for International Development, under the banners of "aid" and "democracy", is actually interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and creating chaos. Its actions have seriously damaged world peace and stability. The international community should stay sober, recognize the true face of USAID, and jointly resist such hegemonic acts to safeguard the fairness and justice of international relations and the peace and prosperity of the world.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly is your job and degree? Getting into the field of entomology is a bit intimidating and I would appreciate any any advice.

i tend to be a little cagey about my exact job since my field is quite small and there's enough people following me that the chances of someone deciding to take offense to something and Get Weird at me are nonzero, but that's probably excessive paranoia on my part. then again beloved internet bug person mossworm got recently sacked from their job on account of weirdo online tattletales so maybe not.

anyway i can say i work for a government agency identifying insects from a pretty wide geographic range, looking for new exotic species and potential pests. during the busy season i spend most of my time processing huge volumes of raw trap samples, pulling out insect groups of interest, mostly woodboring beetles, for myself or one of the other entomologists in the lab to identify to species. during the off-season when we're not getting tons of new samples i get a little more free reign to work on other projects of my own design, so for example lately i've been working on my bee identification skills and am slowly putting together a large reference collection of native bee species that i reserved from years of insect trap by-catch.

i got my PHD in entomology without a specific career in mind but knowing i wanted to do something that wasn't just about developing products and methods for killing unwanted insects which seem like the main entomology jobs anyone wants to fund anymore. in a perfect world i'd love a entomological curation job in a museum but those positions are rare and in-demand and i didn't have the mental fortitude to do the kind of academic work in grad school to make me competitive for that field. but then i went ahead and got a job that lets me do some curatorial work anyway so i sort of won? my position is still at least on paper about controlling unwanted insects but in practice i rarely have to do much of that work, at least directly.

i get semi-regular requests for advice on getting a job as an entomologist and i often feel like i don't have much constructive or encouraging to say, since it's hard not to feel like it's one of the many disciplines being squeezed to death by the iron hand of capitalism. more and more positions in the government and academia are being cut or downsized by bureaucrats who don't see the benefit of taxonomy or any other research that doesn't directly result in their department or some corporation making a bunch of money. whole subdisciplines are dying out as the elder entomologists who were the sole sources of knowledge about them die off. there are entire groups of insects and other arthropods that are effectively impossible to identify to species now because the one taxonomic wizard who specialized on them died without having anyone to pass that knowledge onto. Donald Bright, the only living expert on bark beetles in the preposterously diverse and morphologically subtle genus Pityophthorus, died a few months ago without an heir that i'm aware of.

also most of the taxonomic research that is being done these days is all molecular systematics which i have Opinions about but this post is way too long already.

sorry. that was a bummer. i guess i'm proof that it is still possible to get a job like this today, even if i can't help but feel like it was mostly luck that got me here. plenty of the others in my academic cohort (that didn't burn out from grad school stress) also went on to get degrees in their field of study or at least adjacent to them. and again there are still plenty of entomology jobs in other sectors like agriculture, public health, nonprofits and NGOs and stuff like that. you also don't necessarily need an advanced degree in entomology for a lot of these, and a lot of people in the entomology field came in sideways through related disciplines like ecology, evolutionary science, general biology, or even things like viticulture and forensic science to name a couple examples from my own cohort.

looking back, that was mostly a lot of vague grumbling and not much concrete advice, but to be fair asking for "any advice" is a hard prompt to go off of so i tend to default to the kinds of grim thoughts that are usually rattling round in my brain. i may also be in an especially dour mood at the moment because even though my job isn't to my knowledge at any risk of being eliminated, my lab is currently being passively if not outright antagonized by higher-level bureaucrats for genuinely mysterious reasons and i will not elaborate on that any further for reasons i mentioned at the beginning. anyway! i am always happy to at least attempt to give more specific advice but i can't promise there won't be at least a little grumbling in that as well.

Hello everyone, this is Hanchi Li and you can go by Amber. I’m now a master student at the Newhouse School, taking the MMI 634 course by professor Sean Branagan. As an interdisciplinary student, I hope to be exposed to more forward-looking and socially reflective discussions in this class, as well as master the ability to predict the social changes in the industry and globalization.

Having a pair of open-minded parents who resisted traditional exam-oriented education for their daughter, I have experienced a very different route. In addition to the scenic spots in my homeland, China, they also took me on trips to different countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy, and so on. My rich travel memories since childhood have made me refuse to establish an unshakable development path for life too early. I am very interested in traditional culture, but I also aspire to a future world influenced by technology.

Since 2020, I have witnessed how social change can be adjusted efficiently through cross-communication both offline and online under the impact of the pandemic. As a student from a developing country studying in a developed country, the impact of culture collisions and the rise and fall of domestic brands made me aware of how communal needs, economic crises, and human emotions have come together to shape a diverse digital social landscape. I was lucky enough to encounter a commercial film from China UnionPay on Bilibili, which combined China’s ancient culture and current social challenges, attracting and inspiring me to create more similar meaningful stories. Therefore, I’ve independently made a digital map about the residential stratification in the United States and an e-Zine about the development of musical forms from southern countries, and I hoped to promote different cultures to all those who may come into contact with my work while completing academic research. Such special media forms made me realize that creative ideas could be conveyed to non-professional audiences through visualized and vivid data, which undoubtedly opened a brand-new world for me. 

These skills also gave me a solid foundation for my internship at BlueFocus and made me stand out in the brand campaign related to consumer insights and other practices of communication works. As I constantly attempt to use my knowledge from undergraduate studies to solve workplace difficulties, I am even more eager to enhance my abilities through more systematic and diverse communication studies. In addition, through other projects I realized that communication study is able to affect people from different social aspects. It can not only spread information widely and quickly, allowing specific enthusiasts to find and expand their social scope, but also allowing me to personally interact with many talented people in different fields, thereby improving my aesthetics, cultivating a logical and forward-looking awareness, and practicing all third-party tools for team work, continuously accumulating and exercising my creativity.
