Final shot of the Cullins, another long lens shot from the Old Man of Storr looking south as the last rays of a fantastic sunset just glanced the mountain tops. I think overall I prefer my landscape composition of this sunset from a couple of posts back, but this view helps really highlight the interesting detail and contours of the peaks. Elgol.... This weekend I made the trip to Skye with my mate Nick Watson from @njwimages - a brief reccie before we run our workshop on Skye in November (See here for info: http://www.inspireanimage.co.uk/skye-workshop.html). Sunday we headed for Elgol for sunrise, but the weather wasn't on our side, so after trying to grab a little extra sleep in the car, we were out to shoot. Another view of the Cullins, this time from the banks of the river Sligachan as it winds its way away from the mountains. It was a cloudy autumn day, one where the light and conditions make it really hard to capture a good photo despite it still looking amazing to the human eye. As such I really struggled to get the balance of tones right to capture the moody atmosphere without it looking dull or too "overdone". I took 2 shots of this scene, one focused on the foreground and one on the mountains behind. I planned on trying my hand at focus stacking, something I don't have much experience with. However I ended up really liking this image with only the Heather in focus, it felt a bit busy/distracting having everyhting crisp. A grazing Highland cow on the Isle of Skye. I tried to keep the tones similar to my last post whilst creating a moody atmospheric scene from what was quite a dull image if I'm honest! A combination of the split tones and colour panels in lightroom give you amazing control over the colours in your image, which is great for creating a set of themed images to capture the feel of a shoot! Also did you know you can copy your settings from an edited photo and simply paste them onto another? Sticking with the Isle of Skye today with a pano from the other end of the island at the base of the Cullin Mountains. I took a vertical pano because I wanted to capture the interesting foreground. Personally I'm not sure I'm that keen on the composition as it really dwarves the size and scale of the mountains in the background! A different part of the same hike on the Isle of Skye. Photographers always strive to photograph these places at dusk or Dawn when the light is perfect and the colour spectrum diverse, and whilst the best photos arguably come from these times, it doesn't mean you cant take great images in the harsh midday sun. You just need the right composition and a little bit of tweaking the light in lightroom! For me, when selecting a bunch of images to convey the tone and feeling of a trip, I find wildlife or macro imagery with the right colours and tones can evoke just as strong emotions as sweeping vistas, and can provide a nice contrast to landscape views in a photobook or collage/collection of images.
