I have entirely too many OCs and I won’t ever stop
So, I will list all my OCs here, active or not. I couldn’t just keep reblogging my earlier masterlist with updates because, well, wall of text much?
I try to make sure I have at least 1 character representing each race. Not all of them are canonically Dragonborn, but I’ve marked those who are with (DK) after their name, short for Dovahkiin.
And yes, this is just my Skyrim OCs. Mostly because I play it the most (hi, endless supply of easily installed mods!), and because if I added my ESO, Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall, and Arena OCs, this list would almost literally never stop.
Feel free, nay, ENCOURAGED, to drop asks about these characters because I live to blab about them to anyone in earshot (why else do you run a TES blog?).
Tumblr media
First, the actives.
Dunmer: Radene Valos. Great-granddaughter of Queen Barenziah. Nords call her “The Red Wolf” because of how ferociously she fights, usually out of a fearful and begrudging respect. Staunch revolutionary; real Magneto/Lenin red-ragger type. She’s out to improve the lot of the Dunmer in Skyrim by any means necessary and woe betide any who stands in her way or fails to help. Member of the Morag Tong and champion of Azura, Mephala, and Boethiah. Worming her way through the Stormcloaks so she can engineer a situation where all the rotten eggs of the Stormcloaks are in one basket and then blow up the basket. Also steadily poisoning most of the Black-Briar family in slow motion.
Altmer: Tarwen Verenandes (DK), a former Thalmor battlemage during the Great War. Disgusted by the violence on full display during the conflict, she resigned after the war and became a priestess of Auri-El. Her devout piety led to her being chosen by Auri-El/Akatosh to be the Last Dragonborn, and she was also gifted with being able to use Auri-El’s divine light as the basis of her spells.
Khajit: Sonn-Ja Sableclaw, an expert martial artist and assassin. Works for the Dark Brotherhood and is utterly loyal to Astrid. Prefers fisticlaws to weapons, and is absolutely lethal with them. Keeps a massive collection of knives and daggers anyway. Chose to be best friends with Arnbjorn purely for the irony. Worships Rajhin and Baan Dar.
Argonian: Murders-For-Cash, who is exactly what it says on the tin. Also Dark Brotherhood, and a Shadowscale like Veezara, who he treats like a brother. Willing to supervise children and surprisingly good at it but charges exorbitant rates for it. Worships Sithis.
Nord: Lady Gwendolyn Triggs (DK), a knight and thane in the service of Elisif the Fair and also her companion and lover. Noted for her bravery, loyalty, strength, skill in battle, and being steadfastly impossible to kill. Not part of the Imperial Legion any longer, but assists them in their operations during the Civil War anyway to both safeguard Elisif’s claim as High Queen and further her own political standing so that marriage can be an option for them. Worships the 8 post-Concordat Divines, but gives special devotion to Stendarr.
Redguard: Akivasha, an ancient Yokudan vampire Witch Queen who has awakened in the modern era. Practically a physical God. Hangs with the Dark Brotherhood because it’s the only group that has Gabriella in it. Far and away my most overpowered OC and in no way does it make her less fun. Worships Mephala and Boethiah, and begrudgingly acknowledges Molag Bal as the forefather of all vampires.
Imperial: Yezka of Vabonne, an OC who began as just a Rule 63 Geralt of Rivia. She’s a Witcher*. Like Gwendolyn, she’s easily picked out of a crowd due to her pronounced Warrior’s physique and tapestry of battle scars (I have a type). She dislikes political games, roundabout language, beating around the bush, social injustice, marginalization of the vulnerable, and has come to have a steady slow-burning hatred for humans as a general category because of the way she’s been treated over her six decades of monster hunting (she’s 93, but Witchers age super gracefully no matter the timeline). She fits in far better among Orcs, Elves, and the Beast Races who have also been so often mistrusted and ill-treated and has a lot of contacts in those communities. Oddly enough, she has a friends-with-benefits thing going with the vampires Hern and Hert at Half-Moon Mill in Falkreath because they only prey on humans and she’s never been hired to kill them. Worships Reyman Ebonarm, The Divine Black Knight.
?????: The Marked Cinder (DK), a mysterious figure completely shrouded from head to toe in rusty mail and plate that totally obscures his appearance, hiding the fact that he is essentially a charred and withered husk given new life by The Nine Divines. Doesn’t know it, but is no stranger to saving the world as the previous life of that body came to be known as The Eternal Champion during the events of Elder Scrolls Arena. Doesn’t really like or dislike anything, essentially serving as a walking meat grinder with a hunger for the forces of evil. Is closest to Arkay and Akatosh, but tends to regard the gods with equal authority and reverence.
* In my headcanon, Witchers were a kind of Spartan-II-esque initiative by the Vigilants of Stendarr to create “Super Vigilants” that could basically handle anything and everything. Thanks to the systematic alterations done to their physiology, the Witchers proved too difficult to control and due to the body count that arose whenever one went rogue it was a short-lived initiative. Yezka is among those that stayed loyal to the mission, if not to the Vigilants themselves. She’s easily my tallest character, towering over most fellow humans and slightly edging out a fully grown female Altmer due to the mutations she underwent.
Tumblr media
Rest in Pepperonis: Inactive Characters I ran out of story for
Bosmer: Vynna the Magpie, a highly talented thief and general renegade with a fiercely vengeful streak towards the Thalmor, and Elenwyn in particular, thanks to their purge of Vynna’s family and village. Married to vengeance, will sleep with everyone else. Best archer of her era. Despite her gruff and macabre bearing and demeanor, plays the organized crime game well enough to be called the Queen-In-Shadows. Worships Y'ffre and Hircine.
Dunmer: Ineria Resvalyn, a Telvanni-descended blood mage and necromancer (her magic is big on total recycling) hailing from House Sadras. Scholar and surgeon first, adventurer second. Eccentric and catastrophically bad at dealing with normal people but makes up for it by having an indispensable skillset. Probably Asperger’s. Can Dunmer even have that? Big on Azura worship.
Breton: Fynnic Ironverse, privateer and bard by trade, full-time Casanova and pain the the ass insufferable know it all by nature. As quick with a blade as he is with his wit. Known far and wide for being the Troubadour who brought the Chicken Dance to Skyrim, for better or worse. His major at the Bard’s College was probably leaning against lampposts at night while taking long drags from his cigarette. Atheist, but his lifestyle aligns neatly with Sanguine’s domain.
Imperial: Alessia Laguardia (DK), former centurion in the Imperial Legion. now a top-tier monster Hunter. Big muscles, bigger scars, even bigger prey. Lives a largely solitary existence except for her dog, Flavia. Fond of impossibly gigantic swords and bows. Largely averse to what most would call decent clothing. Worships Kynareth.
Orc: Khauma Relaadri (DK), winner of Skyrim’s Unluckiest Parentage Award. Half Orc, Half Dunmer. Spat upon by both. Found acceptance in the Imperial Legion, and fights for the unified Empire she feels it represents. Her greatest goal is to be a hero, as it would both please Malacath and serve as a positive role model and example to other put-upon people throughout Tamriel that they can rise, no matter their circumstances. Worships Malacath.
Tumblr media
There’s a ton of other characters that I’ve played as over the last 8 years, but above you’ll find the characters I was attached to enough to actually care to remember or keep playing.

Note
In games such as Red Dead 2 and Skyrim, when objects get glitched into each other so each are overlappig, the game starts shaking both items violently. If the player or any other item that comes into contact with the overlapping item to be catapulted into orbit. Why does happen in so many games running on wildly different game engines?
It’s because they’re all simulating physics and things can get weird due to numerical error tolerances. Out here in meatspace, objects cannot interpenetrate each other because of how matter works. My hand cannot occupy the exact same space as other matter. Even if I stick my hand into an area occupied by gas, that gas is displaced by the exact volume of my hand. The gas particles and my hand cannot be in the same place at the same time.
Tumblr media
However, in 3D game world space [there is no inherent sense of collision]. Objects can clip into each other without any trouble - we have to artificially (and externally) check to see if they *should* collide, and then do something like stop them from moving. The problem typically comes from the fact games have to use numbers in order to represent object locations and orientations. When you’re talking about numbers (especially with regards to things like angles), the chances of sticking to whole numbers like 1, 2, 3 are pretty much zero. You’re looking at values that are closer to 1.0001123 or 121881.10181891. Those numbers are typically represented by a “floating point” numerical representation, since they can represent both very large numbers and very small fractions. The problem with floating point numbers is that they get less accurate for very small fractions - you might look at a number and get 1.000000000000000000000001 at one point and 0.999999999999999999999999 at another. This is really only a difference of 0.000000000000000000000002, but it means that the position of things can shift at any time a tiny bit. That means that it is entirely possible that some objects will slightly interpenetrate each other at any given time.
Tumblr media
We build our physics systems to ignore small stuff like this. If it isn’t a big interpenetration, we’re probably fine so we can ignore it. But sometimes that difference is over the minimum threshold, and that’s when the physics system says “Oh, these objects have collided with each other. Let’s run our physics simulation on them to see where they go”. Then, depending on the physics simulation formula, we typically take things like the mass of the objects, the time frame over which the motion takes place, and the resulting force applied to each object in a specific direction (typically away from each other because it’s an equal and opposite reaction). Most of the time, we use the normal physics force formula: Force = mass x acceleration. Acceleration is generally (distance moved / time² ). The thing that usually makes the objects go flying super far is because of that time factor. Typically, the objects only interpenetrate for a frame or so, which comes out to ~1/60th of a second, or 0.0166 seconds. So if you move 1 centimeter in 0.0166 seconds, you’re looking at an acceleration of about 3,628 cm per second squared applied to your objects.
Tumblr media
Basically, a small push that happens super duper fast has a huge amount of kick because physics. It’s also the cause of [the corpse volcano that I built] a few years back. And, since physics is physics and math is math, it happens pretty much everywhere regardless of the engine because math and physics aren’t engine-specific.

If you'd like to get an email when the next post is up:
Until 2 years ago, I used to be a PC person. I had a giant tower desktop computer with fans with flashing lights. I replaced that with a maxed-out MacBook Pro so that I could start traveling and work from anywhere. The problem is, since then I’ve missed PC gaming. All that startup stuff gets so incredibly boring after awhile, and we need to destress. Why even leave your computer screen to destress when you can do it ON YOUR COMPUTER? YES! YES! FREEDOM OF REALITY!
So let’s browse the games in Apple’s App Store, well, they’re not so great. It’s kind of the iOS type stuff but then for OSX. Pretty very very shit.
But that’s stupid, because the MacBook Pro 15″ has two graphic cards, and they’re actually pretty powerful. And the MacBook Pro 13″ and MacBook Air have on-board graphic cards, but they’re fine to play PC games from a few years ago (like Skyrim). So it’s a bit of a shame, we can’t play games on it. And well, destress.
How about GTA V? It’s come out for PC a few months ago, so I wanted to see if I could get it working on my MacBook Pro. I was pretty sure I couldn’t, but I still wanted to try. I mean I’ve been wanting to play this for years, but never had a device for it. I mean, YOU NEED TO PLAY THIS, RIGHT?
I know you can run Windows on Mac with Parallels. But it’s a virtualization app, so it’d never run it with any high performance as the graphics drivers are virtual (software emulated) and not native (hardware). Try it with any game, it’ll probably crash even before playing it, or it’ll be extremely slow.
But then there’s Boot Camp, which lets you run Windows natively (without virtualization) and with high performance on your Mac. After it’s installed you’ll have to reboot to switch to Windows, but that only takes half a minute each time.
**Since Apple doesn’t like Windows, it makes it REALLY EXTRA SUPER hard to get Boot Camp to work. Obviously cause they hate Windows and never want you to use it. I get it. But that means it’s full of stupid bugs that you have to figure out yourself how to fix. It took me 10 days. Yes. 10 days of tears. Maybe that’s why I don’t know anybody using Boot Camp. So to save you all the PAIN and time, here is my tutorial with all the tricks to get it working. **
What you’ll need
16GB USB stick (not an SD card!), I tried a 8GB one as Apple recommends it, but it wasn’t big enough, yup WHATEVER!
Windows 8 ISO file, in a perfect world you’d buy this from Microsoft, but they make it really hard and want to ship you a physical CD (what the fuck, it’s 2015, let me buy an ISO), so just find an ISO file of Windows somewhere (okay fine, Microsoft, I guess you don’t WANT my money)
Steam account to buy GTA V PC (it’s about $50 I think, worth it because you can play it online if you buy it legally)
Prepare Boot Camp
First search for Boot Camp Assistant on your Mac. Click Continue and you’ll see this:
Tumblr media
If this is your first time, select ALL boxes. The first one makes your USB stick loaded with Windows and OSX’s boot camp loader, the second one is the Boot Camp drivers it adds, the third one sounds weird but means it’ll partition your drive to set up Windows.
So now click Continue:
Select your Windows ISO file and continue.
It’ll take some time to copy the Windows ISO to your USB stick, and then download the drivers from Apple that are compatible to your Windows version.
When it finishes, you’ll see this partition window. This means it’ll divide your hard drive up in two pieces, one drive for Windows, one for Mac’s OSX. Here it gets really dodgy, because it actually doesn’t work properly EVER.
You need to choose how big your Windows drive should be. To calculate the size: Windows needs about 20 GB to function, then you need some space for your game. GTA V takes 65 GB, so that is 65+20=85 GB. To make it performant I rounded it up to 100 GB. But it depends on how big your games are etc. Skyrim e.g. is less than 10 GB. So you’d need only 30 to 40 GB probably.
But then it doesn’t work
The reason I said this is dodgy is because it’ll probably fail. You’ll see this amazingly descript error probably like me and my friends did:
It took me days to figure out how to fix it. But it comes down to this: (1) free up space on your drive and (2) if it has disk errors or not. Aim to get about 50% free space. For me that was insane because I have a 1TB drive, with 100 GB free, so I had to free up another 400 GB. It helps to just put stuff on an external hard drive while you’re setting up Boot Camp, you can put it back after.
The non-blue stuff on Macintosh HD is my free space, not enough obviously. Make sure you get about 50% free space on your drive. So if you have 256 GB drive, get 125 GB free. At 500 GB, 250 GB free. At 1 TB, 500 GB free. You get it.
Now fix those errors
Even after clearing all that space, Boot Camp will probably still whine and fail again, like it did for me.
That’s because it’ll run into some weird errors on your drive. Those weird errors are because off, well, I have no fucking clue. But they’re there. How to fix this? Well you open Disk Utility.
Click “Verify Disk” and it’ll check your disk. This might take awhile. I got this crazy scary error. If you didn’t get that and it’s verified, then just skip this part.
I was like “wait WHAT? NO!”. My SSD drive was broken? Why did nobody tell me! I rebooted into Recovery Mode (reboot and hold CMD+R). There I opened Disk Utility in there to verify my disk. If your disk is encrypted like mine, you need to unlock it first by right-clicking the disk, selecting Unlock and entering your password.
Then I verified it again, repaired everything and it worked fine. There were no errors. Odd right? Who cares! Because after this it worked. I rebooted into normal OSX mode and started Boot Camp Assistant again. This time I only selected the last checkbox:
Let’s try again
There we go, partition it:
After partitioning, Boot Camp Assistant automatically restarts. And then BAM!
Tumblr media
Now Windows doesn’t like our partitions
Yay! It’s Windows! On a Mac! Don’t celebrate too early, because this is where hell starts.
See what that says? “Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 3”. Wait WHAT? WHY! Boot Camp was supposed to fix this shit, right? I was supposed to not do anything and Boot Camp would put all the files in the right place, to make it work on Mac, right?
Tumblr media
NOPE!
Then you press Format on that partition. And it seems to work but no it doesn’t because it says:
“The selected disk of the GPT partition style”
COME ON!
What does it take for a (wo)man to get a Windows around here?
Well, a lot. After hours of Googling, I figured it out.
You need to reboot back into OSX. Exit the installation. Then hold ALT/OPTION and select Macintosh HD to boot to. Then go back to Disk Utility:
Select your BOOTCAMP partition and go to the Erase tab, then under Format select ExFAT and click Erase. Make sure you’re erasing the correct partition (BOOTCAMP not Macintosh HD).
After that reboot your MacBook into Windows by rebooting and holding the ALT/OPTION key and selecting your USB stick (I think it’s called EFI). It’ll load the Windows install again.
Try selecting the BOOTCAMP partition in the Windows installation again, you can recognize it by the size you made it. For me that was 100 GB (it showed as I think 86 GB). If it still gives an error, go last resort. Remove the BOOTCAMP partition within the Windows installation by clicking Delete.
Then add a new partition by clicking New:
Try installing it on that partition. If that still doesn’t work, you’re out of luck, cause I have no idea either.
And then…it works
You’ll see this.
The problem is that there’s a good chance the Boot Camp drivers for Windows to understand your MacBook (e.g. use WiFi, sound, etc.) aren’t installed. Luckily they’re on your USB stick. In the Start Screen go to search and type File Explorer. Then try to fin your USB stick. Open the Boot Camp folder and find an Install app, open it and let it run. It’ll probably reboot.
Tumblr media
Now with all your drivers installed, most of the stuff on your MacBook will work on Windows now. My friend has some problems with the Bluetooth keyboard, but that was an unofficial keyboard. My Apple one worked perfectly. As did my Logitech wireless mouse.
Now let’s make Windows suck less
Okay, so Windows 8 is obviously the worst interface any person has come across. Like Windows 8 itself actually feels pretty solid, if you get out of that insane box square maze mayhem they call the Start Menu now. It’s insane. Who runs this company? So incredibly stupid to do this. My dad just switched to OSX because he couldn’t understand this Start Screen. Biggest fail of the century.
We have no choice though. We want to play games! So to get your start menu (from old times) back, install Classic Shell.
Then set this image as the start button in preferences:
Yay! Now to disable that stupid Start Screen, right-click on the Task Bar, then click Properties, then click the Navigation tab, then check “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start”, uncheck “When I point to the upper-right corner, show the charms”.
Now install Steam
I’ll let you do this as it’s pretty easy. Go to Steam and the top right click Install Steam.
Then search for GTA V. Click Download.
Here’s the problem, GTA V is 65 GB and that will take awhile. You obviously don’t want to be stuck for hours in Windows. The trick here is to install Parallels in OSX (if you haven’t already). Reboot to OSX (hold ALT/OPTION and select Macintosh HD) and set Parallels up so it uses the Boot Camp partition. Open Parallels, select Boot Camp on the right and follow the instructions:
After installing, try playing GTA V. Customize the graphic settings a bit. You can’t play it on super high settings, but you can go pretty far on a MacBook Pro 15″. Like I said, it has an actually really powerful graphics card, so it can run GTA V fine.
Yay!
Now you can use your Boot Camp partition within OSX with Parallels to download games/software and continue working. Then when it’s finished, reboot to Windows and play your PC games.
It took me awhile to get back into playing games when I did all of this. I mean, it’s like it has to compete with reality, which is already insane for me, and so GTA V felt somewhat “fake” to me for days, until I accepted it was a game, and nothing I did in there would be an actual accomplishment. See, that’s what startup life psychology does to you. And on a serious note, that’s why we should all play more games. Because it helps you get out of your filter bubble.
Going outside to walk your dog? Naaaaaah, why would you! There’s GTA V!
P.S. I wrote a book on building indie startups called MAKE. And I'm on Twitter too if you'd like to follow more of my stories. I don't use email so tweet me your questions. Or you can see my list of posts. To get an alert when I write a new blog post, you can subscribe below:
Furthermore, the version of the game that is put up for free is the GTA 5’s Premium Edition – this includes the full storyline from the game plus Grand Theft Auto Online in addition to all currently existing in-game upgrades and bonus content. To top it all, users would also get the “Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack” that comes with even more content as well as 1,000,000 $ bonus in-game money for online play.
All you need in order to grab the GTA V for free is a working PC or Mac (of course, one that could run this rather resource-intensive game), an Epic Games Launcher, and an Epic Games account. However, one thing we must note here is that users would have to have enabled two-factor authentication on their accounts in order to be permitted to get the game for free.
Can you run GTA V on Mac?
The short answer is yes. If you have already set up you Mac to play PC games then just go ahead and take advantage of the Full free Version of GTA V. If not, you will need to install Boot Camp, create a virtual Machine and afterwards install the game.
How to play gta v on mac without bootcamp?
Performance wise it would be unpractical using other methods. The performance decrease would make the game unplayable. However if you are using one of the latest high performance macs on the market you can give Wineskin a shot. Setting up a Virtual machine would make much sense either.
Install GTA 5 on Mac with bootcamp
Before attempting to install boot camp we recommend checking your macs specifications and cross referencing them with those recommend to run GTA 5. Next, you will need a program called Boot Camp. With Boot Camp, you can install a version of Windows 10 which is compatible with GTA 5. Here are the steps for installing Windows 10 on a Mac using Boot Camp:
Download Windows 10 ISO onto your mac
Configure Boot Camp Assistant
Go to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Boot Camp Assistant
Open the program and click continue
Select the Windows 10 ISO
Choose somewhere around 100GB of space
Install the Windows 10 ISO and configure Windows
Install recommended drivers after booting up the Windows partition
If you are running Mac OS Cataline 10.15 we recommend watching this YouTube video to make sure you are not missing out on any of the steps.
Playing GTA V on Mac
Although ac computers aren’t specifically designed as gaming machines, it is still possible to play games in them. However, if you want to run GTA V on a Mac, you will first need to install Windows 7 or higher. We highly recommend installing windows 10 on your Mac even with the latest version of Mac OS 10.15.5 via something called Windows Boot Camp (official instructions from Apple on how to set this up) using the instructions above. Also, note that, in order to run the game on your Mac, you will also need at least 65 GB of free space and your machine would have to meet/exceed the minimum system requirements for the game.
Downloading GTA V for mac
Please remember to download the game on the windows version via Boot Camp. The Epic game launcher itself is not compatible with Mac OS.

Use Geforce Now to play GTA on Mac
A number of users on the Geforce forums have been reporting that Grand Theft Auto 5 has been removed from the NVIDIA Geforce Now library of games. Many people used to play GTA on Geforce Now but the game isn’t available anymore. Initially, the rumors were that the reason for the game’s take-down was an update or some problem with the contract, but it seems that Rockstar has got a deal with Google for Stadia and Geforce Now yanked GTA because of that.
Use Stadia to play GTA on Mac
The good news is that the fans of Grand Theft Auto 5 might be able to see it arriving soon in Stadia Edition. A Rockstar Mag tweet indicated that the game can be released earlier than expected. According to the leak, players using Google Stadia seem to be shortly able to enjoy the game. However, the tweet did not have a source or any timeline for the game’s release. That’s why many fans already anticipate an update that will reveal when they should be able to play the ported title.
Descargar Gta 5 Mac Epic Games To Play
At the moment, the game persists in gaming charts, and, hence, bringing it to more playing platforms is financially meaningful for all interested parties.
Grand Theft Auto 5 also gives fans a lot of content and the players in Stadia would surely enjoy the well-regarded title in their gaming collection. It remains to be seen if this game would contribute to improving Stadia’s revenue, although this depends a lot on the continuing success and popularity of GTA 5.
Grand Theft Auto 5 can currently be played on PCs, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X scheduled to be launched in late 2021.
Running GTA on Apple silicon
For the time being m1 chips cannot run windows with Boot Camp. The fundamental reason is that the two operating systems now run on totally different architecture. Where as intel chips on Mac were capable of running Windows 10 this would be nearly impossible to achieve with all new Macs with apple silicon
Massive Epic Game Store crash due to a traffic spikeon release date
Descargar Gta 5 Mac Epic Games To Play
As soon as Epic Games Store’s official Twitter account announced that the game they will be made available for free would indeed be GTA V, understandably, a huge number of users seem to have rushed to the Store in anticipation of the free release of the title. This, however, seems to have caused a massive crash on the Epic Games servers that lasted for hours. The Epic Games team addressed this issue on their Twitter page, expressing their apologies and assuring their customers that they are working on resolving the issue. At the moment of writing this post, the server problems at Epic Games Store seem to have been resolved and people could now once again log in with their accounts and claim the Premium Edition of the acclaimed Rockstar game.
This is not the first time Epic Games Store has made such free game giveaways. Ever since the store was launched in December 2018, they have been occasionally making games free for a temporary amount of time and according to a statement from the company made in January, they intend to keep doing throughout the whole 2020.

Fallout 4, A game critique
An amusing critique of Fallout 4 and Bethesda as a whole, as written for entertainment purposes, a foray into nostalgia and because of a college deadline that almost killed me.
Fallout 4 is a Lie, and this is why you should be mad.
Fallout 4, the acclaimed 2016 release of Bethesda studios, was a popular game upon its release, selling 12 million units on its first launch day.  But don’t let the numbers mislead you, Fallout 4 is intrinsically a cheap lie to consumers, players and the franchise itself.
Let’s start at the beginning. Fallout, the core game, classifies itself as an Adventure RPG and harkens back to the days of tabletop RPG’s like Dungeons and Dragons, specifically a variant known as G.U. R.P.S,  and is a creative DOS adventure created by Interplay and Black Isle Studios in which you can use many skills to determine your own path through the Wasteland. Fallout 2 follows much the same mechanic, though set about two decades after the first game.  Around the time of development for a third game from Interplay, the cancelled Project : Van Buren, Interplay went bankrupt due to bad business practice, and sold all rights of the game franchise to what is now Bethesda Studios. Years passed until, what can only be described as Bethesda’s game devs sitting at a table thinking “we can’t make another goddamn Elder Scrolls game, what do we do?”. They get an intern to dig through what I hope is the proverbial dumpster of rights deals Bethesda had made and found the small gem of Fallout.
From this, we can see Fallout 3, a failure in its own right, much less for the franchise, emerge. Amidst the cries of praise from paid off reviewers (this was when this was legal, and usually not frowned upon), you could hear the dissent of fans watching their loved franchise devolve into a hellspawn of first person shooter and RPG, with callous writing and boring plotlines at best (don’t even begin to talk about the issues with core game mechanics either, because any reviewer worth their salt would probably hit you).
But, somehow, possibly from the hype surrounding the astoundingly good trailers which were accelerated well beyond what normal consoles and machines could handle at the time, they made enough money from that steaming garbage dump to scrape together a “sequel”, and I say sequel because Fallout 3 changes so much of the 20 years of established lore that calling it a sequel to even Fallout in general is a reach.  With its overpriced at release DLC, not to mention the base game itself, littered with pre order “exclusives” and being such a buggy mess on certain platforms that it was rendered unplayable, Fallout 3 set the low standards that Bethesda continues to follow, even to this day.
Now of course, the engine itself is more or less sound. It is, of course an updated form of the Skyrim engine, known as the CREATION Engine, and its physics are about what you’d expect from a Bethesda game. Not unplayable but buggy nonetheless, events not triggering, textures incorrectly loading, entire system crash when all you did was move three inches to the left. Truly, a game engine couldn't be that hard for a major company to nail down. But oh, Bethesda is so synonymous with game engine failure that the internet has coined it’s own saying, the Bethesda Bug, in which a bug or glitch in a game is so bad that a player is unable to tell whether the game was bugged, or whether  developers simply hadn’t implemented certain parts of the storyline.
Now, this wouldn't be such an issue, you’d think, right? And in truth it wouldn't.
If they bothered to patched the game after releases.
We’ll cover that further on.
It’s particularly telling, of course when both of the most downloaded modifications for your third and fourth installments to a series is an alternative start ability to the game, which allows you to completely bypass the pretty much set in stone character “creation” introduction, which basically sets your entire character's backstory (something that in its own self destroys the player control aspect). When your customers have to resort to MODIFYING THE CORE GAME, and I don't mean implementing a few graphics fixes, which they do anyway because Bethesda has a wonderful knack of never patching bugs in their games ever, and genuinely leaving it up to their fanbases -who already paid up to £60 for a completed game-, but instead scripting and voicing full alternatives to the main storyline and plot hook to turn the game into a semblance of an RPG, you’ve failed to create a game worth playing. This is made much more insulting when your main mantra is “It’s all about player choice”.
In regards to that choice, we are offered very, very little when it comes to the overall storyline and plot. The first major sin of poor writing is almost blase, and that is the game insists on piling exposition on you as soon as you start it up, with a narrated mini movie explaining the events leading up to the game’s events. To be fair, this is a staple in Fallout games, and it’s namely the way every previous fallout game has indeed started. Except, in those games, they changed depending on the title, none went into excruciating detail of the world, namely gave a short introduction to the world as it is, and where you begin, allowing the player to begin building an immersive character will some
The Fallout 4 opening does none of this. It instead asserts that you, the player, has the backstory of being a male veteran of the war that results in the Apocalypse, taking leave incidentally before the bombs fall to spent time with his wife and newborn child.
I’d like to remind you this is supposed to be a Role Playing Game.
In only 5 minutes, the game has locked you out from your own character, telling you that this is not an RPG, this is a shooter with poor story hooks and a half baked plot. The game then moves on to the character creation, arbitrary, allowing you to set how you want your character to look, name them and set traits and-
Oh wait, that's right.
There are no traits. No skills either. Something that has remained at the very forefront of Fallout’s past lauded character creation. No, now everything is determined by basic points in each S.P.E.C.I.A.L Category, that is Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck. These set points determined how a character interacted with the world around them, but also imparted certain inborn traits such as higher speech skills, barter, gunmanship and so on. With Fallout 4, this is dumbed down to practical stupidity, and unfortunately renders the nuanced creation destroyed, something that has been a mainstay and in fact a reason the franchise became popular in the first place
But, I digress, while the world of Fallout 4 (and it’s interlinking stories tying into Fallout 3) is made well, saying it is a fallout game is practically unsubstantiated. It feels like a sham, a game made without the franchise’s core aspects, a skin thrown onto a generic game to appeal to nostalgic gamers. The storylines lack the genuine emotional value and investment players can input, and tells a story, rather than letting experienced players create their own, something that has been a major point to the success of previous titles. Fallout 1 and 2 had such fantastic writing that it seemed almost natural, plot movement wasn’t nearly as dependent on long exposition or explanation in game, it simply flowed because those working on it did not know whether it would sell well, all they knew was that they wanted to make a finely crafted game, regardless of units sold. Todd Howard, the head of development in those days, had essentially turned to his investors and said “Give me all this money to gamble on a game that we’ve been working on for months” and, to quote himself, “It just worked.” Namely, this is a wonderful example of the Zeitgeist of Bethesda in those times, during which quality games were produced and placed the developer into the forefront of video game development. While people cannot deny they have made some definitive games of a generation, a good example being Morrowind. Bethesda used to set the standard, be the one entrepreneurs would aspire to be, to work for, to succeed.
Nowadays, Bethesda doesn't need investors, it has its own budget, it’s own productions, and as a result have found that if they continue to vaguely lie to their players, take out content and resell it, build up a hype train so wild they crash their own website on launch day, then  they can continue to beat that dead horse, so long as it keeps spitting out money.

I know this is somewhat out of left field compared to most of the ask topics you get, but a little while ago you mentioned that you liked Skyrim, but didn't like it's writing. I was curious: why is that?
Well, thank you very much for asking!
My issue with Skyrim is, well, more or less, it’s a power fantasy.
I should clarify that almost every game gives you the option to do things that you can’t really in normal life. I can’t assemble a lovely dirt hovel in five minutes or fight zombies with a sword the way I can in Minecraft. And Skyrim has plenty of deeply enjoyable things you can do that you really can’t in normal life. Like summoning zombie horses, or accidentally jettisoning mudcrabs into low orbit because of bugs in the physics engine.
I feel like the world and writing in Skyrim, though, suffers, because there is one all-important thing it wants to do to the exclusion of all else.
It wants to flatter the player. It wants to tell you that you, Dragonborn, are the baddest dude here, the coolest person ever, the very best, that all the cool stuff and titles and such that you could possibly want are yours, first and foremost.
The setting is populated by many people who have been there longer than you, who have sunk more time and effort into this, who may have spent years searching a particular treasure out, for example, but that’s irrelevant because the spoils will always go to you, unless they’re useless to you- and then someone else can get them.
A particularly egregious example is the questline Unearthed (Dragonborn DLC, in Solstheim) where you are literally just financing the excavation- the guy who is actually hiring people, managing this, and digging out the entire ruin to get at these relics, to the point that he’s repeatedly attacked, and then possessed by ancient evils- leaves all of them untouched just because he’s decided he’s done with this entire thing.
I don’t mind getting cool stuff in video games. I mind that the narrative will aggressively throw the characters I interact with under the bus to give me Yet Another cool trinket that I probably won’t use because I’m a mage and heavy armor isn’t my schtick.
But the other thing that aggravates me a lot is the fact that, as eager as the game is to laud power, influence and money on you… there’s actually very little you can do with it that doesn’t just go back into aggrandizing and rewarding you.
They tried very hard to establish a flawed setting rife with turmoil, and succeeded, but like… I can become the Arch-Mage of the College and the Harbinger of the Companions and the leader of the thieves’ guild and a high-ranking member of the Imperial Legion and so on and so forth, but on my first trip to Windhelm I’m treated to a minority woman being literally threatened by people who are plotting to break into her house and interrogate/abduct/torture her on the blatantly baseless accusation that she’s a spy, and my recourse is that I can make her briefly sing my praises by telling her after the fact that I disagree with them.
I’m not given any opportunity to, you know, stop either of those guys or confront them. I could literally be a six-foot orc warrior with an axe the size of my head in terrifying metal armor and I can’t like. walk over to the guy, put my hand on his shoulder, and tell him to shut his face before I reconfigure it for him and hell if I catch him doing that again. And threatening people into submission shouldn’t be the highlight of my day or a great option. Ideally, I’d much prefer if hatred against minorities wasn’t used as a prop for me to establish how nice my character is.
But if you’re going to put it there, and you’re going to emphasize so much of this might-makes-right I-am-the-baddest-dude, game, why don’t you actually let me challenge or interact with these things? Someone’s life has been literally threatened right in front of me and I can be the thane of all nine holds to the point where I could deck someone in a public market and just tell the guards to look the other way but you wanna tell me there’s just nothing I can do except prop myself up by going “hey, y’know, I’m not like those guys.” I can’t even say “literally never mind that, are you okay” first and foremost because the game anticipates that my first concern is going to be my own ego.
And that’s where the suspension of disbelief falls through for me. The game puts so much effort into letting me accumulate resources and power, but a lot of the horrible things existing in the setting are just treated as The Way Things Are and not worth caring about.
And maybe it’s just the wrong demographic for me. Because I feel like a lot of my personal sense of escapism is “maybe things will be okay”. I like the idea of having power and being important, but in contexts where that’s something that can help.
Comparing that to, say, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. In Twilight Princess, it’s actually a plot point that you may never be acknowledged. A few people know you’re the Hero and you’re saving people- and you are rewarded, in the sense of more gear and new places you can explore- but largely, the biggest reward that you encounter is seeing the people you encounter get happier.
“Hey, this bridge was broken and we couldn’t get across here, it was really bad, but now it’s fixed! Isn’t that neat, I wonder who did that?”
(it was me, I did that, but you don’t know that)
And that feels good. That, I think, is the power fantasy that Zelda offers. It’s a scenario where in a world with a lot of dark places you pick up your little lantern and venture forth, and the biggest reward isn’t the newest smashy thing you got, but how the people that you encounter are less hungry and scared than the first time you saw them.
You’re rewarded, and resources open up to you, but as a byproduct of the whole world opening up more, becoming more hospitable.
Skyrim? Skyrim plays like a dream. I love the mechanics of it. But writing-wise, I think my absolute favorite storyline in the Skyrim games is Dawnguard.
Because Dawnguard is a story that’s actually, for the most part, not about you.
It’s about Serana.
You’re important, but you’re important as a vehicle to help Serana proceed and work against her father’s prophecy. It’s a situation where she very effectively is able to fight back against being the living (or, well, undead) Plot Item. She grows, fights back, and asserts herself, and you take a supporting role. She’s the one who knows what to do and has the real personal stake in all of this. You’re basically just helping.
But I guess the short version of it is:
I feel like Skyrim bills itself as a huge open world where you can do/be anything you want to, but it really drops the ball on letting you do good that’s actually meaningful to the layperson you encounter.
Sure, I can understand that realistically, getting one person off the street and back on their feet is a complicated process and not something you can just waltz into- but “realistically” I should be spending thousands of years studying to refine my thu’um but they have no problem letting me rove the countryside punching dragons because that’s more fun… so why is realism only a concern when it comes to helping people and the game has no problems letting me murder and pillage my way through major cities without any consequences that would seriously stop me?

Task 3
To start my prototype menu system I imported all the graphics I created in photoshop to my project in unreal engine.
Tumblr media
I created a separate folder for them to keep it organised and I used the same resolution in photoshop for UE4. I made sure my canvas size in photoshop was 1920x1080 which is what I’m working in. I’ve chosen three bright colours and stuck with them throughout all the graphics. The only other colours are the white rectangles which act as a highlight for the buttons.
Tumblr media
During task 2 I looked at ‘Hello Kitty Roller Rescue’ a game which I speak about in my history of games which was my first introduction to the playstation. It uses these white rectangles to clearly show the buttons. The splash screen and menu are very loud so it is important to highlight what the player needs to select so they know where to look.
I created a menu widget and used different canvas panels to contain the different pages of the menu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s the splash screen. The prompt to press X takes the player to the next menu. It’s also informing them that X is the select button.
After pressing X the canvas panel is collapsed and the main menu opens.
Tumblr media
Here the player can select to Start the game, exit the game or view the credits. Each of these also collapse and open a new canvas panel. (Except for start which simply closes the menu)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the player does select ‘Credits’ they are brought to the credit sequence. This is simply a placeholder as I’ve not added any credits yet. The credit title however is animated to tilt side to side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The player can exit the credits which will collapse the canvas panel and return them to the main menu.
Once the player has started the game they can pause the game by pressing ‘P’ (This is placeholder as it will later be ESC on keyboard or Start on gamepad.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I opened up the project settings and added Pause in the action mappings. I then created a blueprint which paused the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the player selects ‘Exit’ it closes the pause menu and resumes the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the pause menu the player can select ‘HELP’ this opens up the Help menu which displays the character controls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The player can view the controls then select ‘Exit’ to return to the paused screen. They can select ‘Exit’ once more to resume playing the game.
Video Showcase
youtube
I’m really happy with my prototype menu so far. I especially like how the normal appearance and hovered appearance change. It makes it clear to the player what they’re about to select. I plan on adding a sound for when they select to make it more satisfying. I’ll need to ensure the sound isn’t shrill or annoying.
Issues that I came across whilst developing my menu system was that I had to manually place the graphics and size them. This caused some of them to look stretched. I realised I could go back into photoshop, view the PNG and get the exact size from there.
Tumblr media
This allowed me to display the graphics at the exact same resolution so they look uniform.
Interactive Elements
I plan on creating an environment to be displayed behind the splash screen/main menu for before the player spawns. I’ll also add interact-able in game assets to make it more fun. It’s common in games to have interact-able elements to menus.
Tumblr media
Skyrim lets character rotate and view in game models. I think this is a great system to keep the player entertained during loading screen and also showcase your models.
Tumblr media
Bayonetta allows the player to practice combos. This is a great system for a fighting game however my project isn’t a complex fighting game so a system like this won’t be needed.
I’ll look into ideas for what interactive element I’d like to implement into my menu system.
I decided a fun idea would be to have clickable assets which react in different ways. I created a cute bird model in maya and exported and textured in UE4.
Tumblr media
I created three different animations. Two Idle animations and one ‘shocked’ animation for when it’s clicked on.
I imported the mesh, imported the skeleton and the three animations and created a blueprint class actor. I then set the animation setting to ‘play animation blueprint’ I then began creating my animation blueprint.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An issue I came across was all the birds were doing the idle animation in sync which looks unrealistic. I used the random sequence player to add my two idle animations/  This means the birds will randomly do 1 of 2 animations at different speeds.
Tumblr media
Another issue I came across was when the birds were clicked on and played their ‘shock’ animations they lost their idle animations forever. This was fixed by making the idle animations as an ‘IDLE’ state in the animation blueprint and making use of montages.
Tumblr media
Here’s a preview of my untextured smallscene which acts as the background for the Main Menu and Level Select. As the player uses the menu they can also play around with the birds placed around the scene.
Audio
I finally got around to adding audio. I downloaded simple boop noises in WAV form and used the modulator node in UE4 to adjust the pitch and speed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This allowed me to create two sounds one for selecting and one for going back.
Tumblr media
Something that’s really fun that I found when using animations blueprints is you can have different ‘mins’ and ‘max’ so every time the sound is played it varies in pitch/volume. This is really useful for characters footsteps as it makes them sound more realistic. For my menu I made the pitch modulation quite small to not be too jarring.
Tumblr media
I used the ‘Play Sound 2D’ node as it’s what you’d use for sounds which don’t exist in the game world like the interface. The other node is ‘Play Sound at Location’ which would make use of spatialization in the 3D Space. This is useful for alerting players through audio which direction the source of the noise is.
BugTesting
Most of the issues I came across were easily fixed with some workarounds however when I had issues with figuring out where in the code it went wrong I made use of my dual monitors to watch the code and see if it stopped at any points.
Tumblr media
I also used breakpoints which freeze the project once a certain node is fired. This is great as it shows me exactly where it is in the project where nodes are firing.
Another simple way but slightly longer is adding printstrings to code which directly show text on the viewport when nodes have fired.

Evaluation/Feedback
I’m really pleased with my menu and the intractable birds. I learnt a lot about animations, canvas panels, cameras and player controllers. Anonymous feedback from my peers said that the seagulls was one of their favourite parts. This shows I should think about adding more ludic elements to my game. They don’t necessarily have to have any importance to the game narrative but players seem to just enjoy interaction. Feedback I received to improve the seagulls was to have some fly past during camera  transitions. I think this is a great idea to make the scene more alive.
This was also the first time I used audio in UE4 and I was surprised at how simple it was. Unfortunately during my presentation and showcase of my menu, the speakers were not working so my peers couldn’t properly hear the audio. It can however be heard in the demonstration video I made.
Some feedback I received which I was really pleased with was that my ‘art style followed the same style throughout and suited my target audience’ I’m happy that my peers thought so because I spent a lot of time during pre production trying to keep my references a similar style and properly picture what I wanted to create.
The UI for example (health bar, skill bar) was received quite well. It kept to the same style suited for a younger audience.
All constructive criticism was to keep building on what I already have. To my knowledge there wasn’t anything missing that was required and the menu functions perfectly. It’s now just about going back and polishing what I’ve created. At the moment my menu system is functional and clear which I’m happy with.
I’m going to keep working on my menu system as I want to eventually make the Level Selects buttons physical objects in the small scene rather then a widget on the view port. I also want to add different interact-able elements such as clicking on lights to make them flicker or clicking on billboards/posters to change colours or pictures. I’ve created materials before where the colours change, this can be done by making the colour a parameter and making a material instance.
I implemented all the minimal elements on the assignment brief which work properly. I’ve bug tested my menu and made changes when necessary such as the animation blueprint with the seagulls. I also changed the pitch slightly on the audio to make it less shrill.
I enjoyed this Unit and I’ll be keeping this menu system in my current project which I’ll be using for the other units.
