“This song is about my friends teaching me how to be okay. We wrote it on our last night in the studio after having the most fulfilling and beautiful couple weeks together. We’d been working in Slyvan Esso’s studio in North Carolina so a lot of this song is an homage to Amelia Meath but it also mentions my friend Muriel who did so many visuals for the record and my friend Caleb who produced the record and co-wrote/inspired so much of it. Especially this past year, I’ve learned to accept myself by watching my friends. It’s probably the happiest song I’ve ever written”

Do I like it?: Decently, yeah! The reason I like Alt-J is because they have that superfluousness to them that goes from innocent plucking and murmuring to just raucous yelling, like a fairie’s jaunt. If more of Sheldrake’s stuff is like that then hell yeah man

My sleep apnea did wild shit to me last night, and while the vast array of dreams and stream-of-consciousness thoughts is lost to me, I am relieved to have remembered this video of choreographer Emma Portner and her wife Ellen Page dancing to the song "Slack Jaw" by Slyvan Esso.

This was shown to me earlier this year in a sequence of other videos that deal with touch and physical proximity in a way that hits differently now, in quarantine. The video for "Valtari" by Sigur Rós amused me at the time in the way its dancers contorted near and then on top of each other in a fashion that escalated a lot, and the other two videos from Emma Portner had other themes on top ("Lavender" in particular dealt with trying to unpack the cultural baggage of an east London theatre).

This one, though, hit me hard both then and now. There are moments in which both partners alternate trying to comfort one another, moments in which they're clearly bringing something up from elsewhere to this, and it struck me that touch and public/private displays of affection are so much more significant now that it's highly discouraged to be in contact with somebody with whom you don't live.

I remembered thinking about marriage for the first time in a while - it's been a non-concept for me, personally - and gleaned that every time I think about what that would entail for me, I end up with a different scenario or conclusion.

The thing my brain insisted on writing down was that, in any relationship, there's a push and pull in the same way that astral bodies orbit one another - each participant to some degree is bringing some sort of outside, piled-on baggage from elsewhere: passions, talents, burdensome thoughts. I remember thinking that "the things in common or in contrast that can bring people more closely together have a sort of sympathetic magnetic effect."

I've had to write this out four times because Tumblr had erased my progress, ha.
